Cate Blanchett Teams Up With Director Todd Field On 'TAR' For Focus Features

You know those features the Playlist has done in the past, The Lost, Forgotten, Unmade projects of Stanley Kubrick, David Fincher, Quentin Tarantino, etc., etc., looking at big-name feature filmmakers and the various projects they tried to get off the ground that never happened? Well, even though he’s only ever made two films, “In The Bedroom” and “Little Children,” a similar feature for director Todd Field could easily be made.

He’s “finally coming back” though—a sentiment we’ve written seemingly a dozen times over the years with “TAR,” a feature for Focus Features he wrote that will star Cate Blanchett, according to Deadline. Unfortunately, details are scarce, and all parties are keeping the plot under wraps. But it is set in Berlin, and production will begin in September.

Though again, there’s room to be cautious, and we’ve heard this one before. Field hasn’t directed a film since 2006’s terrific drama, “Little Children.” Since then, we’ve reported dozens of projects over the years that he’s been attached to. And actors absolutely adore Field, a former actor himself turned writer-director. Most recently, he had Daniel Craig attached to star in his long-in-development “Creed Of Violence” movie, but that still hasn’t come to pass. Also in the works is another Daniel Craig project, the 20 episodes “Purity” for Showtime, which was ordered and then eventually halted.

Other projects over the years that Field was going to make at one point, “Battered Bastards of Baseball” produced by Justin Lin, the bestseller “Beautiful Ruins” that at one point was rumored to have interested actresses like Imogen Poots and Saoirse Ronan, multiple versions of “A Creed Of Violence” that would have starred Christian Bale or Leonardo DiCaprio,  a political thriller co-written with Joan Didion, a crime project named “Hubris” that Michael Mann was once attached to, and many more that just never came to pass.

Field’s 2001 directorial debut, “In The Bedroom,” was a major hit and earned five Oscar nominations at the 74th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Sissy Spacek), Best Actor (for Tom Wilkinson), and Best Supporting Actress (for Marisa Tomei). 2006’s “Little Children” earned three nominations at the 79th Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Kate Winslet. Despite that track record, Field hasn’t made a film since.

“TAR” would be the filmmaker’s first feature in fifteen years. Will the project come to pass? An actual start date sounds promising, but again, there’s plenty of reason not to get your hopes up. But as usual, fingers crossed for the long-awaited return of writer/director Todd Field.
