About Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae

Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae, commonly known as Eye leaves, is a stunning tiny succulent that belongs to the family Aizoaceae and genus Conophutum. The plant is native to South Africa and is well known for its fleshy leaves paired up in opposite directions. The soft-to-touch leaves are green to purple or reddish brown with prominent flowers in a deep fissure. The flowers are usually pinkish but can also appear reddish mauve or purple-white.

Eye leaves plant grows in autumn to spring and goes dormant in summer.

How to care for Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae?

Sunlight/Location: Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae does not like direct sun exposure and must be in the summer shade. Move your plant to a sunny spot in cooler periods of the day.

Water: Give your plant less water in summer and water more abundantly in the autumn and spring when new leaves are showing up.

Soil/Top dressings: Grow Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae in sandy-gritty soil that is exceptionally well in draining excess water.

Planter: Opt for a small to medium-sized container with a drainage hole at the bottom.
Propagation: Eye leaves plant can be propagated by seeds or leaf cuttings. Just take cuttings from the mother plant containing one or more heads along with a fraction of the root. Let it dry and then insert in the soil in optimum conditions. There will be new growth in a couple of days.

Fertilizer: The plant is not a heavy feeder, so fertilize every two years, if repotted.

Disease: Mealy bugs and rarely scale are prone to attack Ophthalmophyllum friedrichiae.

Winter shipping

We insist on shipping succulents to our customers all year round. However due to the extreme winter weather, although we pack succulents with as much protective material as possible, plants are still at increased risk of frost on their way to colder areas. We highly recommend adding one 72-hour heat pack to your order or you can request a hold on the package until it warms up.

Please note that The Next Gardener is not responsible for packages that suffer cold damage without a heat pack. We cannot control the weather. Order at your own risk.

Hawaii, Alaska, and Other US Territories

Fortunately, shipping is available to Alaska, Guam, and other U.S. Territories. However, due to numerous factors beyond our control, including customs checks and shipping delays, free shipping to Hawaii and Puerto Rico is not an option. And we can not provide the 14-day quality guarantee for orders going to Hawaii and Puerto Rico. The buyer will assume all risk of damage when a delivery is delayed. We appreciate your understanding.

Sorry. No International Shipping for now!!!
