STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith Remastered Mod [updated 08.10.2022]
By Arc
This guide shows the simplest possible way to get the Remastered/HD version of game (hardware acceleration, compatibility fixes, high resolution support, new textures, nicer models, FOV configurability etc.) on Win 7/8/10 machines. I am writing this guide because like many I have had issues like black screen after modding game and some issues when you could play it but not directly from Steam. So I created simple guide I would love to have before my "adventure" with modding.

This guide:
  1. provides link to one mod installer package (yeah, only one with JKGFXMOD, the Mysteries of the Sith Neural Upscale Texture Pack, the Jedi Knight Neural Upscale Texture Pack, the Enhancement mod for JkGfxMod and MotS FOV - Mipmap Patches included),
  2. explains how to install it (which certainly is not a rocket science) and configure game in mod settings (which is simple when you know what to do),
  3. explains in what way launch modded game for a first time and how to configure it in game settings ,
  4. explains how to integrate modded game with Steam (launching it directly from Steam and working Steam Overlay).

Download and Install Mod Installer Package
UPDATE!

Author of mod package GeneralTantor updated it to version 2.0 on 6th of August 2022. So the guide is updated too,

Check Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith Remastered project site on Mod DB: https://www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-knight-mysteries-of-the-sith-remastered if that is what you want. Author of the package provides us with short information about it as a whole and about its components (with links to each of them if you would like to install them separately). Below base article there are articles about updates, fixes, installation process etc. including above metioned version 2.0.

Screenshot with info about mods:

If you like it, download mod installer package from https://www.moddb.com/mods/jedi-knight-mysteries-of-the-sith-remastered/downloads/jedi-knight-mysteries-of-the-sith-remastered-20 and unpack it.

Screenshot with download site:

Run the Star Wars Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered 2.0.1.exe from extracted folder and install the mod package into your Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith game directory. For Steam default directory is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith

so You need to change to above one or Your custom one (mod package default directory is Program Files directory).

You should install Mod Package on fresh Steam installation. If you played game before, You should uninstall it and remove any files from or just delete Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith folder in Steam directory and install fresh game.

After installation you will get 4 new shortcuts.

Do not launch game at this moment.
Configure Mod Package
After installation of Mod Package you should read Configuration Guide. After that run JKMR 2.0 Configuration shortcut on your desktop or in the Start Menu Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith folder. After clicking it Windows will ask You about program you want to open settings configurator with. Choose Notepad.

Then you may modify your settings in Notepad and then save changes. Most important is to put your desktop resolution and FOV (field of view) which is default 90 (and that is bad FOV). Below is my configuration with 2560x1440 resolution and 120 FOV:

{
"resolution": [],
"fullscreen": true,
"correct_game_aspect_ratio": false,
"correct_menu_aspect_ratio": true,
"hud_scale": 4.0,
"max_anisotropy": 16.0,
"antialiasing": {
"type": "SSAA",
"samples": 2
},
"enable_bloom": true,
"enable_ssao": true,
"enable_parallax": true,
"enable_texture_filtering": true,
"enable_posterized_lighting": false,
"vram_texture_preload_size": 700,
"command": "JKM-FOV120.exe"
}

It requires a decent rig. If the game stutters for you, try to play with max_anisotrophy and antialiasing.

Right click on Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered - Play - shortcut, choose Properties, then Advanced and set it to administrator rights.
Configure Game Settings
Run game from Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered - Play - shortcut (not from Steam) and set ingame options:

Enable/Disable subtites in General Settings:

Enable/Disable auto aiming and aiming crosshair in Gameplay Settings:

Enable 3D Acceleration and View Size (should be less than max to show HUD) in Display Settings:

Setup Sound in Sound Settings:

Setup Keyboard and Mouse (inverted or non-inverted) in Control Setiings:

After that game you may start gameplay (but do not launch it from Steam) to see if everything works fine. If you want to just play game and not integrate it with Steam you may play it from Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered - Play - shortcut.

If you want Steam integration (launching directly from Steam, Steam time count, Steam Overlay, Steam screenshots) check next part of this guide.
Integration with Steam
Go to your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith folder and:
  1. rename JediKnightM.exe to backup-JediKnightM.exe
  2. rename inject.exe to JediKnightM.exe
  3. launch game from Steam and wait until it launches (it may take few seconds as its downloading some files before first launch)
  4. go to Display Settings and check 3D Acceleration and View Size again if needed.

Interior of C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith folder should look like this:

Done. You may play game directly from Steam with screenshot ability etc.
Extra: play Star Wars Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered from STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered
You may play Star Wars Jedi Knight Mysteries of the Sith Remastered or other mods directly from STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered. Click Expansions & Mods as shown in my STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II Remastered guide:

@Soul.Solid95

Hello, now you can play this game directly from modded Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. You have link to the guide from my Steam profile. But I will check this version too in free time.

I tried launching it through steam and did exactly what you said about renaming the inject into the original .exe, the game launches, but when I go into display and tick 3D acceleration, it shows me a full list of resolutions instead of my set resolution from the json config.

From the list picking my resolution (2560 , 1440) and starting or loading a game instantly crashes the game after it loads.

Picking any other resolution doesn't crash the game, however it just shows me a black screen with the HUD being the only thing visible.

Anyone had a similar issue? Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

There is a crash in level 9, a hallway is blown up and falls down, shortly after the game crashes. This has something to do with the FOV setting. The easiest way to get around this is to play this short part py directly clicking the JKMR.exe file and playing with corruption until you get to the end of the hallway. Then as long as you are far enough away and do not look at it, you can save, then exit, and go back to playing with the full mod.

I did some experimenting, the mip map patch seems to also be a factor in it freezing as well. Odd, considering I was able to go through Level 8 in all its entirety, but same issue happened in Level 9 when you have to restabilize the bridge. Quite strange, honestly.

"One thing that I noticed with one of my own injected texture packs combined with a custom JK level from 2012 was that the level crashed as soon as I was trying to approach a door that used a certain texture. So when I removed the injected textures, the crashing disappeared (later on I isolated the bug-causing texture in question and the crashes also stopped). So sometimes with these bugs, one has to temporarily disable some of the JkGfxMod features (parallax mapping, in my case) to see if the bugs persist".

Anyone getting crashes in Level 8? I get them after I grab the communication device thing and turn the corner. Pretty sure it's near the end of the level too.

Could you please create a similar walkthrough for the Jedi Knight Dark forces 2 base game?
