Moniaive is a small historic village, located 8 miles south east of Thornhill. The name Moniaive means the ‘Hill of Streams’ and comes from the Gaelic monadh-abh. A village has existed here as far back as the 10th century and in 1636 King Charles I granted a charter in favour of William, Earl of Dumfries, to make Moniaive a 'free Burgh of Barony'.

The village today has a choice of places to eat, hotels and self catering accommodation. There are also several historic trails, popular with visitors keen to learn more about the village history.
