Gymnocalycium castellanosii subspecies ferocius

Gymnocalycium is a large genus of cacti found in Argentina as well as its neighbors to the north. This one comes from the Argentine province of Cordoba, and it sports a meshwork of stout spines spreading out across its chubby body. We originally grew it under the name G. hybopleurum var. ferocior, but cactus expert David Hunt maintains that it is properly considered a subspecies of G. castellanosii - hence the name listed above. The flower color is actually cream (though the photos make it look almost yellow), with a dark red center.
