This is amongst the smallest of all flowering plants. It is a surface-floating freshwater perennial which can form a carpet over the surface of the water. It has 1 to 3 light green leaves which are round and flat with a single dangling root. The flowers are minute and seldom seen.

Seen May to July, in still or slow-flowing freshwater bodies like ponds, lakes, ditches and canals. A native species which is locally common and widespread except for the far north of Scotland.
