Distribution: Native from Hungary and Italy to Southeast Europe, Krym, Turkey and Iran according to the distribution information provided by the Plants of the World Online portal (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew). Also native to North European Russia according to The Euro+Med PlantBase (source: Uotila, 2009+).
Habitat: Common and widespread species in forests and shrublands in the temperate-continental sub-Mediterranean belt (mainly in the zone of Querco-carpinetum orientalis macedonicum association).
Lifeform: Perennial, large shrub or small tree; microphanerophyte according to the Raunkiær system.
Flowering period: Spring: APR.
