This is good fun if you feel like doing some walk. You will find it at the very end of the promenade - honestly, I only found out about this place recently. It is free, no guides available but interesting that information on the walls.
It is a very small museum but I kinda of liked. The view on the rooftop is great and I took hundreds of pics.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Joe N.Ballygarret, Kilpedder, Republic of Ireland01Jan 15, 2020

James moved into this Martello tower for a few days with his friend Oliver St. John Gogarty, who is now immortalised in pub form. However, Olly seems to have grown tired of his erudite friend, and expressed this displeasure by firing a gun over his bed while he slept, resulting in James taking his Stilton from the cupboard and legging it.
His brief stay was not unfruitful, however. It inspired the opening of his novel Ulysses; the gun platform with its panoramic view, and the living room inside the tower are still much as he described them in his book.
Now a museum, it houses Joyce's death mask, as well as photographs, papers and first editions.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dannielle T.Brooklyn, NY05Feb 4, 2018
We visited Dublin from New York City and really enjoyed the tower and the history, the location was equally stunning.
When we arrived the women working there asked us where we were from and then Trump also immediately came up. We were surprised but engaged, yes we know he is horrible but we don't need to be called on it when we walk into a museum. We are from NYC, and my husband is an immigrant, many if not most people in the USA are not supportive of his presidency but we don't need to be called on it when we arrive at a visiting desk. Further, when I disclosed I had recently become an Irish Citizen through descendants and had dual citizenship one if the women exclaimed that Ireland could not just keep accepting immigrants and couldn't continue this and how bad it was for Ireland's economy. We thought this was ironic since this is exactly Trump's conservative stance on immigration to the USA.
Please leave the visitors to just see the museum.
It ruined the trip for us before we even got to see the museum.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Laura M.Madison, NJ953449283Jan 20, 2012
I cannot say enough about the James Joyce Tower. I glow when I think about the out-of-body experience I had on top of the Martello tower, overlooking the eastern coast of Ireland standing where James Joyce stood.
After a quick metro ride from the center of Dublin and a scenic walk along the coast, the Martello tower looms on the cliff in Dun Laoghaire. The tower was the setting of the very first scene in Joyce's "Ulysses," to which it owes its fame. The tower is run by Mr. Robert Nicholson, a "Ulysses" scholar and author, and overall good man. He is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and gave me and my fellow study abroad students a personal walking-tour of Dublin based on "Ulysses." He has made the museum what it is; well organized and clean to display the true genius that Joyce was.
A must-see when visiting Dublin. You cannot understand the full history of Dublin without Joyce and "Ulysses."Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dani B.Fulda, Germany26402375Jan 9, 2010
When you're down in Dun Laoghaire, the Martello Tower- or James Joyce Tower as it's called by pretty much everyone- is just a short walk away from Dun Laoghaire centre. As Aoife said, Joyce mentioned this tower in his masterpiece 'Ulysses' so if you can't stomach reading the book, visiting the tower is a great way to experience the James Joyce vibe. It will cost you 7 Euro to get in, but the museum is beautifully done and will show you a glimpse of Joyce's life- and maybe tell you what possessed him to write Ulysses?

Nice tower. Unfortunately it was closed when I went by (around 5 am). Seemed kind of expensive anyways.
