1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula WS6

Near-flawless Pontiac Firebird features a long list of options and only 2,300 miles on the odometer.

If you missed your chance to buy a loaded 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula when they were in showrooms, but you still dream of owning a brand new WS6 car, there is a car in the LS1Tech Marketplace that you really need to check out. This 1998 Firebird Formula WS6 was one of only 51 built that year with the manual transmission and it has been garaged since it was new. Like, it was literally kept in a garage and hardly ever driven, seeing just 2,300 miles worth of road use in the past 21 years.

Based on the long list of options and the low build number, the 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula WS6 posted by AxlTransAm is a rare find. When you factor in the condition and mileage, this is a true automotive unicorn. As the listing points out, this might be the lowest-mileage example of such a machine, so this might be as close as you will get to finding a new LS1 Firebird.

However, this beauty won’t come cheap.

Firebird Formula Introduction

When the OP posted this 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula WS6 for sale, he provided a ton of information on the vehicle, along with some basic build numbers for the model year. He explains the details of the Formula WS6 package, along with the upgrades made since new, all of which relate to keeping the car flawless.

Well, I cannot believe I am doing this, but I have decided to go in a different direction car wise. I am selling my super rare Pontiac Formula WS6. It has a Borg-Warner 6-speed manual and dark pewter leather interior. From what I understand, only 221 WS6 Formulas were produced in 1998 and only 51 had the 6-speed manual and dark pewter leather interior.

This car is also one of the lowest (if not the lowest) mileage examples in existence, It has always been garage kept and in like-new condition. This was the first year for the WS6 package on a Formula with the LS1 engine, which had larger injectors, a more performance-orientated CPU tune, and a one-year only, low restriction / high flow exhaust system. It has the extremely cool single side exhaust! The Formula is also rarer, lighter, and quicker than the Trans Am. In addition, the WS6 package includes the Ram Air hood, performance exhaust, special wheels, and upgraded suspension.

The car also has the rare options of a 6-way power seat, leather, and Monsoon stereo system. It also does have the standard items of tilt, cruise, power windows, locks, and A/C. I have all of the original paperwork including window sticker, original owner’s manual and all the of original purchase paperwork. The car is 100% original and will not disappoint (still smells brand new). Additionally, the whole car was ceramic coated and full front end was wrapped in XPEL paint protection film. I can answer any more detailed questions about condition, options, etc. for serious inquiries.

The OP also included the pictures shown here, which aren’t very good. For such a rare car, there is surprisingly little detail included in the way of pictures and those which are included do this Firebird little justice. We don’t get to see the “the extremely cool single side exhaust” and we can barely see the back end in the single shot included, but from what we can see, this LS1 car is super clean.

Hoping to Sell on the Forum

Literally everyone who has posted in the sale thread for this 1998 Pontiac Firebird Formula WS6 has swooned about how rare and clean it is, but so far, the car hasn’t sold. A few members recommended that the OP post is on an auction site, as he is likely to get top dollar, but he hopes to sell it to another enthusiast on the site before posting to others. Hopefully he takes some better pictures before taking that next step, as anyone who will considering paying top dollar will want to get a better look at the car.

At $32,000, this car is considerably more expensive than an average, used 1998 Firebird, but the average used Firebird isn’t brand new inside and out. That price is likely chasing off some prospective buyers, as this is not just another fourth gen LS1 car, this is a collectable that needs an owner who will cherish such a rare, spotless performance car.

"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years. "He owned a repair shop and had a variety of performance cars when I was young, but by the time I was 16, he was ready to build me my first drag car – a 1983 Dodge Mirada that ran low 12s. I spent 10 years traveling around the country, racing with my dad by my side. While we live in different areas of the country, my dad still drag races at 80 years old in the car that he built when I was 16 while I race other vehicles, including my 2017 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and my 1972 Dodge Demon 340.

"Although I went to college for accounting, my time in my dad’s shop growing up allowed me the knowledge to spend time working as a mechanic before getting my accounting degree, at which point I worked in the office of a dealership group. While I was working in the accounting world, I continued racing and taking pictures of cars at the track. Over time, I began showing off those pictures online and that led to my writing.

"Ten years ago, I left the accounting world to become a full-time automotive writer and I am living proof that if you love what you do, you will never “work” a day in your life," adds Rall, who has clocked in time as an auto mechanic, longtime drag racer and now automotive journalist who contributes to nearly a dozen popular auto websites dedicated to fellow enthusiasts.

"I love covering the automotive industry and everything involved with the job. I was fortunate to turn my love of the automotive world into a hobby that led to an exciting career, with my past of working as a mechanic and as an accountant in the automotive world provides me with a unique perspective of the industry.

"My experience drag racing for more than 20 years coupled with a newfound interest in road racing over the past decade allows me to push performance cars to their limit, while my role as a horse stable manager gives me vast experience towing and hauling with all of the newest trucks on the market today.

"Being based on Detroit," says Rall, "I never miss the North American International Auto Show, the Woodward Dream Cruise and Roadkill Nights, along with spending plenty of time raising hell on Detroit's Woodward Avenue with the best muscle car crowd in the world.
