Smith breaks own school record, setting up Lions for Championship Saturday

COMMERCE – J.T. Smith broke his own school record on Friday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships inside Memorial Stadium as the Texas A&M University-Commerce track & field team closed out the second day of the conference championships.

Smith (Klein Oak) clocked in at 10.13 in the 100 meter dash, which was a wind-legal time. He was the fastest runner in the preliminary races and broke his own school record of 10.18 seconds, that he set at Baylor two weeks ago.

COMBINED EVENTS
Trey Wheeler took sixth in the decathlon, finishing up with 5,743 points. He took third in the 1,500 meter run to close out the event on Friday. Wheeler cleared 3.60 meters in the pole vault.
 
Elizabeth Ortiz (Palacios) came into Friday in third place, but she did not record a mark in the long jump in the first event of the day. Ortiz took second in the javelin with a throw of 36.81 meters and finished third in the 800 meter run to place sixth with a point-total of 4,273.
 
MEN
In his third attempt in the long jump, Chandler King (Hughes Springs), recorded a new personal-best mark of 24 feet 11.25 inches (7.60m). He took fifth in the event.
 
There was only one finals event on the track on Friday, which was the 3,000 meter steeplechase to close out the night. Nicholas Deutsch (Frisco) finished fifth with a time of 9:49.46.
 
In preliminary races, Cameron Macon (Dallas – Carter) timed 14.34 seconds for seventh in the 110 meter hurdles and heads to the finals. Adrian Taylor (Cape Town, South Africa) took the last spot in the finals of the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.31 seconds.
 
Smith was the fastest runner in the 100 meter dash, while Ibrahim Fuseini (Accra, Ghana) took third in the prelims with a time of 10.28 seconds and Delan Edwin (Castries, Saint Lucia) placed fifth with a time of 10.29 seconds.

WOMEN
Celeste Sela (Mont de Marsan, France) jumped 20 feet 2.25 inches (6.15m) in her first attempt in the long jump. That mark would be a school record, but the wind was at 2.6 meters per second during her attempt. She placed seventh in the event.
 
On the track, Mariana Shostak (Lviv, Ukraine) ran 54.16 seconds in the 400 meter dash to qualify for the finals. Two Lions are through to the finals in the 100 meter dash. Leah Pettis (McKinney North) had the second-fastest time in the prelims at 11.70 seconds, while Sofia Khenfar (Lyon, France) timed 11.83 seconds to race again on Saturday.

The field events begin at noon on Saturday with the women's discus, while events on the track begin at 5:30 p.m.
