Consumer Health Informatics: Engaging and Empowering Patients and Families

Clinical Informatics Study Guide

Abstract

The last decade has shown that patients are not only consumers of healthcare but also want to be key participants in their care by taking control of their own health and sharing their health information with their providers and care systems in various technological ways. This patient-centered approach has the potential to empower patients to engage in their care for better outcomes. It further led to the creation of the discipline of Consumer Health Informatics, which deals with examining and analyzing consumers’ health needs as well as implementing solutions, processes, and strategies to create a bidirectional flow of information between consumers and healthcare provider. This chapter will discuss the evolution and need of Consumer Health Solutions, the influences that drive adoption and use, strategies and barriers to the success of such endeavors, along with future trends, and provide evidence and literature around outcomes and impact.
