Agrostis L., Sp. Pl. 61 (1753); from the Greek agrostis
(a forage plant, a kind of grass), cf. agros (a field).

Habit
Perennial, tufted. Basal leaf sheaths glabrous. Culms 40 cm tall. Mid-culm internodes
glabrous. Leaves mostly basal. Ligule an eciliate membrane, 2.5 mm long. Leaf-blades
flat or conduplicate, 40 cm long, 1 mm wide.
Inflorescence
Inflorescence compound, a panicle, exserted. Panicle open, pyramidal, 14 cm
long. Primary panicle branches spreading.
Spikelets
Fertile spikelets 1-flowered, comprising 1 fertile floret, 2.5 mm long.
Glumes
Lower glume 2.5 mm long. Upper glume 2 mm long.
Florets
Fertile lemma 1.75 mm long, 5-nerved. Lemma apex muticous. Palea absent or minute.
Anthers 3, 0.5 mm long.
