TUE DEC 1 | 7:30 pm WTTW News journeys back to offer a revealing look at how the year unfolded in Chicago.

December 2020 ALSO INSIDE

We’ll celebrate the holidays on WFMT with a new special, Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain, as the ensemble Apollo’s Fire explores the medieval Irish and Scottish roots of traditional holiday music in the Appalachians, and eminent violinist Itzhak Perlman celebrates Hanukkah.

From the President & CEO Dear Member, 2020 has been a year like none other, with a global pandemic, a recession, nationwide racial reckoning, the 2020 census, and a contentious presidential election. As COVID-19 impacted Chicago area schools and businesses, WTTW News hit the streets of the city and suburbs to report on local stories that mattered to residents – the struggle to cope, civil unrest and activism, and the drive to rebuild. In Making Sense of 2020, a WTTW News special premiering on December 1, we offer a revealing look at how 2020 unfolded in Chicago. Also in December on WTTW, our popular series Call the Midwife returns with an all-new holiday special set in 1965. We also brighten the season with exceptional choral music, including Christmas with the Tabernacle Choir with Kelli O’Hara and Richard Thomas, The Wheaton College Christmas Festival, and Christmas at Belmont, and mark Hanukkah with Dreaming of a Jewish Christmas and Hanukkah: A Festival of Delights. On wttw.com, in this month of holiday treats, enter the Wonka-esque world of Chicago candymakers in Shelf Life: The Story of Lanzi Candy, and share some fun and safe ways to enjoy this special time in Chicagoland. We’ll celebrate on WFMT as well with a new special, Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain, as the ensemble Apollo’s Fire explores the medieval Irish and Scottish roots of traditional holiday music in the Appalachians. Our Sunday morning series With Heart and Voice focuses on the Advent and Christmas seasons, Chicago a cappella and famed violinist Itzhak Perlman highlight Hanukkah, and the Chicago Symphony brings you Handel’s Messiah. On wfmt.com, get a rundown of safe holiday music celebrations in the area, rank Beethoven’s 10 most influential compositions in honor of his 250th birthday, and discover a playlist of underrated and obscure classical holiday music. On behalf of all of us WTTW and WFMT, I wish you and your family a joyous and healthy holiday season.

A Q & A with the Production Team 2020 has been a year unlike any other in memory, with a worldwide pandemic,

Balta: Our role now is the same as it has

a recession, racial reckoning, and a presidential election. As COVID-19 turned everyday life upside down, Chicago area residents were left with more questions than answers, and WTTW News had to innovate as they served the public with news and information. WTTW News Director Hugo Balta, Senior Supervising Producer Jay Smith, and Senior Line Producer Crystin Immel look back on the year and its challenges, while documentary producer Daniel Andries takes us behind the scenes of Making Sense of 2020.

always been – to produce fair and accurate coverage reflective and inclusive of the public it serves. In a situation where Chicagoans are overwhelmed with seemingly overlapping emergencies, WTTW News helps them make sense of it all with trustworthy reporting.

What did you learn about Chicago and Chicagoans in 2020?

You made the decision to send WTTW News out to different neighborhoods throughout the spring. What challenges and opportunities did that present?

Hugo Balta: I discovered how resilient people in our community are. No matter what 2020 threw at the community, courageous Chicagoans picked themselves up, rolled up their sleeves, and persevered. What role do you think WTTW News plays during turbulent times such as these?

4

DECEMBER 2020

Balta: In telling the COVID-19 story, clearly it was imperative to go into Chicago’s

diverse neighborhoods to hear directly from residents, especially when it came to disparities in access to vital resources. We then had to figure out how to do it while keeping everyone safe. The opportunities this approach gave us to help build bridges between communities outweighed any challenges we faced. Jay Smith: I think being live from a differ-

ent local community each night allowed us to give our audience an invaluable look at how their neighbors were dealing with everything they were facing. What changes did you make to the WTTW News operation to ensure that everyone, guests included, would be safe? Crystin Immel: Toward the end of March

we made the decision to not have guests in the studio, which meant doing all of our interviews via Zoom. We had used similar technology a few times before, but never on a nightly basis! At the same time, we set up the majority of our broadcast and digital staff to work remotely. And there was the added benefit of keeping Chicago Tonight hosts Brandis Friedman and Paris Schutz separated so that if one were to get sick, the other would still be able to serve our viewers. Smith: Brandis reported from the studio each night and Paris co-anchored the show from the field. Our crew was very careful to wear masks and social-distance while reporting, and to constantly clean and sanitize all of the equipment we were using. What were the most important ways that WTTW News met the public’s need for trusted and timely information during 2020? Immel: We expanded our coverage online and added two weekend programs, and

regularly brought on public health officials and other medical professionals to provide updates on COVID-19, as well as business owners and employees to address the economic impact of the virus. Smith: In addition to covering the pandemic, of course 2020 was an election year. Our WTTW News Voter Guide was a great resource, which included – among other things – a platform where voters could hear from candidates in their own words. Looking back, was there a story covered by WTTW News that best captures 2020 in Chicago? Immel: A story that I think represented the best of 2020: a mother and son who used their 3D printer to make face shields, sharing the instructions online for others to do the same. An Oak Park resident who saw the story created a group called the “Noble Army,” and they’ve distributed thousands of free face shields to healthcare workers. How did you decide which stories to highlight in Making Sense of 2020?

Daniel Andries: The WTTW News team’s on-the-ground reporting was vital in helping us make sense of what was happening. Some of what they uncovered: the CEO of Roseland Community Hospital revealing the record number of African-American patients dying, having received none of the drugs they needed. A Little Village Alderman tearfully apologizing for approving the destruction of a smokestack that sent toxic debris into his neighborhood. An audio recording (shared thanks to reporter Heather Cherone) of a profanity-laden showdown between Mayor Lightfoot and Aldermen grappling with citywide violence and destruction. Aside from the people viewers are used to seeing on Chicago Tonight, who will they get to know in this special? Andries: They will meet the behind-the-scenes team that brings them the news, from Chicago Tonight to Chicago Tonight: The Week in Review to Latino Voices and Black Voices, as well as the WTTW News digital reporters and producers. Like producer Quinn Myers who covered the neighborhoods with Paris. And Chicago Tonight’s line producer Nicole Cardos who reported from North Lawndale during the protests. And Rebecca Palmore, WTTW News digital editor. And ground reporters who did incredible work 24/7, as protests led to National Guard troops mobilized in the streets. What do you hope viewers take away from this look back at the year? Andries: 2020 is a year that defies understanding. COVID-19 dominated our behavior,

the long overdue racial reckoning continues, and the presidential election has been mind bending. Communities around the city did their very best to help each other stay healthy. Activists and community organizers walked a fine line between outrage and leadership, pointing the way to greater equity for everyone. And the record number of early and mail-in voters and the crowds who turned out peacefully on election day showed that in Chicago, democracy is still very much alive and well. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

In 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives – and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment – for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws in order to challenge a segregated travel system, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way.

Nature: Cold Warriors – Wolves and Buffalo For thousands of years, wolves hunted buffalo across the vast North American plains until the westward settlement of the continent saw the virtual extinction of both. However, this ancient relationship was not lost altogether, and continues uninterrupted in just one location - Wood Buffalo National Park. Today, the descendants of those ancient buffalo and wolves still engage in epic life and death dramas, and by getting to know the individual wolves in a specific pack and following them as they hunt, we get a sense of how these two animal species coexist.

Fiesta! with Elbio Barilari

Exploring Music

We’ll hear pianist Matthew Hagle in sonatas to honor the Beethoven anniversary, and an international holiday-themed concert by the Wicker Park Choral Singers. And Chicago Baroque specialists perform a 17th-century Christmas cantata.

Elbio Barilari goes back in time for little-known Spanish and Latin-American Christmas music, including portions of the Missa Pastoril para Noite de Natal by Brazil’s José Maurício Nunes Garcia. And listen for Jose Feliciano’s Feliz Navidad.

As a musical response to the scourge of violence in the world, Host Bill McGlaughlin plays peaceful, inspiring music from Bach and Mozart to Vaughan Williams to Bill Evans for a thoughtprovoking Christmas week series.

From the Metropolitan Opera The Metropolitan Opera is delving into its vast archives to bring us presentations from the past. The month begins with War and Peace, Sergei Prokofiev’s four-hour distillation of Tolstoy’s novel, marking the 2002 Met debut of soprano Anna Netrebko. The Met’s tribute to the Beethoven anniversary will be the 2017 staging of the composer’s only opera, Fidelio, starring Canadian soprano Adrienne Pieczonka. Then enjoy a December favorite: an English-language version of Hansel and Gretel from 2018. Finally, join us for another Met holiday tradition: an abridged English-language version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute from 2010 featuring Russell Thomas as Tamino and Susanna Phillips as Pamina.

Jeannette Sorrell

Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain From Jeannette Sorrell and her award-winning early-music ensemble Apollo’s Fire, a new special that traces music from Scotland and Ireland as it has been absorbed into the traditional music of Appalachia. Performed on fiddles, a medieval harp, a hammered dulcimer, and bagpipes to support children’s and adults’ voices, the music journeys from Christmas Eve in the Scotland of the Middle Ages to the folk carols and shape-note hymns of a Christmastime gathering in Virginia. Co-hosted by Sorrell and Candice Agree. Repeats on Christmas night at 6:00 pm.
