An Annual Report is in some ways a formality— an obligation to share our financials with the community at large—but as I read through this one, I realized it was so much more. It filled me with a great admiration for all that Wesley has achieved—not just in the two years covered by this report, but also in its twenty years of proud history. In seeing these accomplishments, I am reminded of how grateful I am for the strong shoulders I am standing on—shoulders of parents, founders, trustees, faculty, and administrators who gave their time and energy to see their school succeed. Those supportive volunteers and dedicated faculty and staff are the foundation of a truly special school—one I have the good fortune to lead as it evolves into a mature version of itself. Part of that evolution is ensuring that we can keep up as society evolves as well. We, as a school, are constantly in the process of self-reflection about the needs of our children and how to meet them moving forward. The educational landscape is changing and we need to remain flexible to change with it. The donations reflected in this report are what allow for that flexibility. Your gifts do more than just keep the lights on and pay for the laminator (though teachers will tell you how important that last one is.) Your generosity also allows Wesley to pilot new programs that help meet our students’ needs and then grow those pilots into full-fledged sustainable programs that support our students’ growth and development. Again, I cannot begin to express the depth of my gratitude toward everyone who supports this school. From the bottom of my heart—Thank You. Ernest Lee Levroney III H ead of School

Wesley impresses me so much. The students impress me with their confidence and character, the faculty impresses me with their wonderful blend of knowledge and heart, and the school itself impresses me with how far it has come. When I first started at Wesley nine years ago, it was still a young school—modest but ambitious with big dreams. It had already proven that what it was doing could work and work well and had set its sights on making itself the best it could be. Now, as I look back from the perspective of having concluded our landmark 20th year, I see so many accomplishments—too many to list here really, but I’ll give some highlights. We expanded to two classes per grade, growing the school so we could provide a Wesley education to more students while maintaining an incredible teacher-student ratio. Because of that growth, we expanded and updated our facilities and built amazing new spaces where the students’ creativity and inquisitiveness could flourish. Because of the new spaces and opportunities, we were able to expand the curriculum, offering additions like increased electives and a dedicated lower-school science program. Finally, and perhaps most impressively to me, because of all this Wesley has gone from being a hidden gem tucked behind a Starbucks, to one of the most sought-after K-8 schools in the Valley. None of this would mean anything of course without the part that impresses me the most about Wesley— the kids. Wesley kids are inquisitive. They’re playful. They’re kind. And through it all, they’re confident. More than at any other school I’ve worked, I know a Wesley student will rise to the occasion—any occasion. Part of me thinks that Wesley kids are just naturally this way, cut from whole cloth into fantastic young people, but that would be doing a disservice to all that Wesley does to help them unlock that side of themselves. Thanks to a hands-on approach of doing and making in the classroom, the kids are prepared to face challenges by improvising, experimenting, failing, and persevering. They’re not afraid to try. Thanks to our emphasis on presentation and performing arts, they are prepared to take the stage in front of peers or strangers with a confidence I never would have possessed at their age. All this is to impress upon you how much Wesley has impressed me. It’s grown considerably—physically and curricularly—in its humble twenty years, and especially in the nine years I’ve been blessed to witness firsthand. I am so proud to have been a part of this growth. I’ll watch Wesley with great interest as it moves boldly forward into its next, inevitably incredible, twenty years and beyond.

H. John Walter III Head of School, 2010-2019 5

Volunteer:

from the Latin voluntarius, “of one’s free will.” That’s not entirely accurate in that we often flatter a parent into submission and then ask if they wouldn’t mind decorating the campus for Halloween, but schools exist on the backs of those willing to lend a hand. From hours spent at Board meetings deciding the future of Wesley and maintaining its present health, to scooping mashed potatoes while serving hot lunch to students, our volunteers are the engine that makes Wesley run. (The Teachers are the transmission, Admin is driving, Facilities is changing the oil, etc.) Volunteerism at the school is critical to our sense of community, and community is what Wesley is all about.

Annual Giving, otherwise known as The Fund We Cannot Do Without,

is the moniker under which Wesley folds its charitable contributions each year from parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, friends, and foundations. We found a twenty on Bakman one afternoon last May and threw that into the mix as well.

It all adds up. Specifically, in the 2017-18 academic year, it added up to an increase in total giving and in total donors. We had 100% participation from faculty, staff, administration, and trustees. Parent support was also at 100% for the second time. Some loose change (and a crayon and two bobby pins) found in between the couch cushions in the teachers’ lounge brought the total to $390,000. In 2018-19, we raised the bar once again to exceed $400,000, our largest overall amount for Annual Giving to date.

Well done, people. Well done.

And yet, questions abound. What’s it all about? Should the Rams have been in the Super Bowl to begin with? Is it okay to end a sentence in a preposition?

How is that Annual Giving amount spent? Let’s answer that last one.

The general operation of The Wesley School is mostly funded by tuition but that still leaves a yawning gap between money-in and money-out. In addition to Wesley’s obligation to pay the bills – i.e. teacher salaries, keeping the lights on – are commitments to providing financial aid to a significant portion of our student body and to teaching the children well, beyond math and science, the Middle Ages and Shakespeare, and faculty professional development. There is all of that, of course, but also mindfulness, athletics, a social-emotional curriculum, and classes and programs nurtured or created – Street Art, Coding, Revolutionary War reenactments, project-based learning, to name a few - under the focus of Annual Giving, “Presentation and Performing Arts” and “Doing and Making,” these past two years. With the generosity of all who participate each year in Annual Giving, Wesley not only maintains a dynamic, collaborative educational program but also reaches further to explore methods about how to do it better, more thoughtfully, more environmentally conscious, and more attuned to the needs of the child, the family, and the larger community.

Annual Giving is critical to making our mission… possible.

Presentation & Performing Arts

Wesley faculty and parents alike believe that well-rounded students have the greatest opportunity for success and happiness. Each year our educators and administrators devise new ways to broaden the curriculum. Bolstering that ongoing effort, Annual Giving’s theme for 2017-18 was "Presentation and Performing Arts" with a focus on individuality, imagination, and creativity. The successful campaign contributed to the Social Hall remodel which (so far) has included refinished bricks, painted ceiling and beams, new fans and light fixtures, new fabric sound-dampening panels, a beautiful proscenium expanding and framing the stage, new speakers, new doors, and additional storage. We also greatly strengthened the electives program, offering more opportunities for Wesley students to express themselves through music, art, and dance. Including the arts as part of a complete education doesn’t just sound good—it’s backed up by science. A recent study conducted at the University of Toronto followed children who received vocal lessons over a period of 36 weeks. Compared to control groups, the vocal students made “modest but consistent gains across all four indexes of the IQ, including verbal comprehension, perceptual organization, and freedom from distractibility, and processing speed.” In short, studying music has far-reaching positive implications that go beyond the ability to sing or play an instrument! By exploring fun and different artistic expressions, our students are balancing left and right brain activity, which can lay the groundwork for becoming innovative thinkers and creative problem solvers. This is why we believe performing arts programs are integral to a comprehensive education, and we’re thrilled that Wesley provides our kids these opportunities.

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” —Pablo Picasso

Mock Trial: The Proof,

Each September, the Wesley 8th graders are asked to pick an elective from among many interesting choices. Some, like Mock Trial, run throughout the first and second trimesters of the year. More than a dozen students choose to compete with over fifty Southern California schools in downtown Los Angeles’ Stanley Mosk Courthouse. On trial in a fictional case, they play the parts of attorneys for the defense and prosecution, bailiffs, and witnesses. Suits are donned and kids take on the roles of their adult counterparts, navigating the ins and outs of our legal system, trying to prove their case in ways superior to their opponent.

14

The preliminary rounds come after weeks and months of preparation. During class, after school, and even on weekends, students learn proper courtroom terminology and etiquette, write their opening and closing statements, craft their arguments, memorize their lines in the context of the presentation, and then set

The Pudding

about thinking on their feet. Did she just lead the witness? Was that hearsay? “Objection, Your Honor. Relevance?” Now, what about that pudding? The original proverb - “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” - means you have to try something first to know what it’s like. At Wesley, students are given myriad options to explore and then discover what interests them. They’re encouraged to take chances and try something new, like making an argument for guilt or innocence. It’s not uncommon for Barbara Anderson, our passionately dedicated Mock Trial instructor, to hear from one of her students a budding curiosity in law and a nascent interest in pursuing it further. Wesley has yet to claim a federal judge or Supreme Court Justice among our alumni but expectations are high.

Is Dancing the Kale of Exercise? The New York Times, April 2019: “Dancing increases cognitive acuity at all ages. It integrates several brain functions at once — kinesthetic, rational, musical, and emotional — further increasing your neural connectivity,” said Richard Powers, a social and historical dance instructor at Stanford University. Well then. Like sunscreen, or kale, or Annual Giving, dancing has immediate benefits but also long term ones. What students learn today—a jazz routine, the joy of synchronicity—they’re likely to remember viscerally tomorrow and ten years from now, perhaps not specifically the instruction but how it made them feel. Like much of a solid, forward-thinking curriculum, Wesley children are given tools to help them focus, build confidence, relieve stress, problem solve, and yes, keep their balance as they get older, physically and mentally. Our estimable Andrew Dinh, with generous support from Annual Giving’s focus on Presentation and Performing Arts, took on the task of revamping the electives program from 2017 and created an electives “wheel,” giving students the opportunity to try a “spin” on their interests and maybe land in—among several creative options—his Modern Dance class, learning the difference between a ball change and a pivot step, and how to move gracefully without running into a friend on the left. This new electives wheel was unveiled in the Fall of 2018. It culminated in a capstone performance, alongside David Forest’s impressive Vocal Music class, demonstrating that every “type” of student is capable of enriching and enjoying themselves—cognitively, kinetically, and fervidly—through the arts. (See more on Mr. Dinh’s work on electives at Wesley in his Faculty Spotlight, p.34) Generous support of Annual Giving allows Wesley to try out new steps toward enhancing education for all our students, offering flexibility for teachers and, occasionally, a delicious kale smoothie from Chef Devin. 23

Does Poetry Jam go with Peanut Butter? That depends. Do you like smooth or chunky? Crust on or off ? You might even be allergic—to peanut butter, that is—but hopefully not jam, and certainly not poetry, and definitely not when 1st graders are donning berets at the “Wesley Café” to share original works or classic verses they’ve come to enjoy. It all starts in September with the poetry unit, part of The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University that Wesley faculty attends as part of their professional development. Students begin reading, then reciting, and eventually writing their own odes to love or nature or mom/dad/the dog. The teachers’ objective in all of it is appreciation and presentation. First, through the discovery of a jumble of words meant to convey an idea in a non-traditional way, children begin to learn the difference between poetry and prose and the many creative methods that can be used as a form of expression. Next, as line after line is read and then gradually memorized, 1st graders begin to understand how words fit together naturally or, when they don’t, the effect that has on the poem as a whole. Sitting under the “Poetree” (inspired by Shel Silverstein) in the classroom, students are encouraged to “branch” out and identify the different types of poems they learn about month by month, from the diamond-shaped diamante in the fall, through haikus, couplets, and quatrains in the winter, culminating in free verse before spring is complete. Finally, in an undisclosed location (think speakeasy), candles are lit, the mic is set up, snacks are laid out, and one by one, six- and seven-year olds step up to offer their friends poetry. In appreciation, fingers are snapped. There’s no “slam”; it’s not a competition. It’s a jam, a celebration, perhaps not made for buttered toast, but incredibly delicious just the same. 28

Doing & Making Do you remember the “hands-on” classes of your school experience? Woodshop? Auto Shop? Home Ec.? A chance to develop skills and exercise creativity through making?

Those “hands-on” classes, like Shop and Home Ec., almost disappeared, and for some time there was a dearth of these practical learning opportunities at schools across the country. However, as educational philosophy has evolved, it is evident that hands-on, project-based education facilitates optimal learning for students of all ages. The timeless “maker” skills and competencies developed in your school years become increasingly pertinent today while adapting to meet the demands of a modern world. For the 2018-2019 school year, the theme of the Annual Giving Campaign was Doing and Making. We used it to showcase many of the ways that at The Wesley School we have integrated this hands-on approach into all aspects of our program and are proud and grateful to provide a diverse, engaging, and stimulating educational experience. We’ve modernized this experience from the hands-on classes we might remember about our school days. Wesley students have a range of creative learning and “making” opportunities related to the arts and technology. Annual Giving offsets the cost of providing the essential materials for this active learning. Some of the materials remain the same as ever: wood, tools, paint, etc.; then there are the expensive, cutting-edge technological tools, such as 3D printers, robotics kits, a laser cutter, and computer software. We are also committed to developing dedicated “maker spaces” for our students to explore their maker skills and creativity.

Funds from Annual Giving cover all of the ways that Wesley goes above and beyond for its students including providing the most effective and appropriate tools for our budding engineers, creative directors, and future change makers.

“Every great advance in science has issued from a new audacity of imagination.” – John Dewey

Faculty Spotlight:

Project-Based Learning Annual Giving directly supports Wesley’s professional development budget which, among many such conferences, made it possible in June of 2019 for 3rd grade leads Elizabeth Heneveld and Laura Cespedes, and associate teachers Kevin Greene (2nd) and Sarah Simon (4th), to attend PBLWorks, a workshop on Project Based Learning (PBL). The PBLWorks conference dovetailed perfectly with the 2018-19 Annual Giving theme of “Doing and Making,” providing concrete steps Wesley educators could take starting with the very next school year to strengthen and deepen learning through hands-on projects and collaboration. Project Based Learning begins with a “driving question.” Students then decide how they’d like to explore that question and set out looking for ways to gather information beyond what’s been provided by their teachers. This might include heading to the library, conducting research online, or interviewing an expert. PBLWorks challenged attendees to consider new ways to emphasize hands-on exploration, collaboration, development of real life skills, and connection to the world outside the classroom. The idea of “sustained inquiry”— returning to a concept, critiquing first drafts, and asking new and deeper questions—is another key aspect of PBL. The 3rd grade team was so inspired, they immediately began planning a 6-8 week unit to experiment with the techniques they learned. Their project will span across curricula including informational writing, non-fiction reading, and social studies mapping. In addition, they are considering incorporating flexible seating arrangements to facilitate students working together in cooperative groups. The PBLWorks conference illuminated a way to teach which allows students to be in charge of their learning, giving them the freedom to research, explore, and synthesize new information, and take true ownership of it.

Last year was Andrew Dinh’s first as Middle School Electives Coordinator—a new position created in part to share with Wesley students a love of performance. The new position allows Mr. Dinh to help kids explore their creative passions and give them a platform to express themselves. Mr. Dinh started his Wesley career as a substitute. After becoming a full-time associate teacher, the 4th grade teachers allowed him to integrate dance into the curriculum. They produced choreographed videos and performed for the school. It was a huge hit and 4th grade quickly became known as “the grade that dances.” Mr. Dinh then added the first official dance program to the electives curriculum—a class called Dance, Production, and Publication. “As a kid I was always in my room copying dance from music videos. I didn’t have a platform to explore what I loved on a stage until I reached high school. Looking back, I always wish that I could have started sooner.”

Faculty Spotlight:

Andrew Dinh

Mr. Dinh hit the ground running in his first year as Electives Coordinator by organizing the 1st Trimester Electives Showcase, which provided a stage for any student who wanted to perform. He screened a highlight video from each class along with short films the kids made in his Production class. Next came the Music and Dance showcase featuring all of Mr. Dinh’s dance students as well as David Forest’s music students.

Mr. Dinh is excited to find new ways to help Wesley students explore their creative and artistic sides and build their confidence in presentation and performance in the 2019-20 school year. He’s joined in that pursuit by music teachers David Forest and Mary McGregor, 7th Grade Public Speaking & Legal Systems Teacher/8th Grade Mock Trial Teacher Barb Anderson, 7th Grade Drama Teacher Pam Moser, and Art Teacher Trisha Singletary. “The arts team at Wesley is so dynamic,” explains Dinh. “David, Mary, Barb, Pam, Trisha, and I can’t wait to see what the kids want to explore this year!”

Hands-on learning:

American Revolution You say you want a revolution

Well, you know

We all want to change the world

The Beatles were onto something. Judging from Wesley’s 5th grade classroom last year, there’s a sense that, through the exploration of the Revolutionary War period, the teachers were onto something too, inspiring their students to make a difference by way of hands-on learning. How much do you remember about your studies in 5th grade? When it was mostly about memorization, probably not much after the test was over. But what about “the shot heard round the world” and Common Sense? Boston’s massacre and tea party? The Articles of Confederation? Yellow fever?

Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.

– Ben Franklin

And that’s exactly what the 5th grade Signature Project does. Through a constructivist approach from the ground up, it involves students with different pathways into the curriculum—like building miniature boats in order to understand water displacement and space in the cargo hold, graphing diseases and the stars in the sky, drawing topographically accurate maps to understand geography, and creating fictional historical characters through tactical and intellectual research into the time period’s culture and narrative and then presenting to the class with an oral presentation. Don’t you know

They’re talkin’ ‘bout a revolution

It sounds like a whisper

But listen closely. As the 5th grade burrowed into the lives of the era — Paul Revere and John Adams, yes, but also Tempe Wick, James Lafayette, and Phillis Wheatley — they were asked about the Constitution. Which rights were violated during the Salem witch trials before the document was written? Why did the framers create the Constitution and who did it seek to protect? Their answers were thoughtful, sprung from all they had explored thus far. You want a revolution, I want a revelation

So listen to my declaration: We hold these truths to be self-evident

That all men are created equal

And, of course, there was “Hamilton,” and songs from “1776,” “Les Miz,” and a Paul Revere rap performed for guests. It all culminated in an overnight at Riley’s Farm two hours away to experience a Revolutionary War adventure with British troops, a tavern, colonial garb, debates, field drills, and ultimately a re-enactment put on by the students themselves. No doubt years from now, when these 5th graders are in high school or beyond, they’ll recall instruction of the American Revolution because they were the doers, they were the makers, and it was their lesson to learn.

THE WESLEY SCHOOL 2018 GALA

STUDIO 54 SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 2018

Imagine, a room filled with boogying party goers decked out in platforms and satin pants. Got it? That was Wesley’s Studio 54 Gala Celebration and Auction on Saturday, March 10, 2018. The Hollywood American Legion hall’s subterranean bar was transformed that magical evening into a New York subway station for cocktails and the Silent Auction. From there, guests were drawn down a long hallway by the booming disco beats coming from the dance floor. When the doors flung open, guests were transported back in time 40 years to experience the magic of Studio 54 in all its glory.

Highlighting the evening’s entertainment was a phenomenal dance number straight out of Saturday Night Fever performed by our very own Middle School teacher, Andrew Dinh and receptionist Sue Paradise. Thanks to our Gala Chairs, Beth Fulton and Jill Whelan, along with their incredible team, we all got to relive the very best of the New York club scene right here in Hollywood. Thanks also to the generosity of our community, we netted over $120,000 in support of Wesley students — for essential items such as programs, faculty training, and projects that directly enhance the experience for our children. What better way to celebrate all that we love about our amazing Wesley community. 45

THE WESLEY SCHOOL 20 TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

There’ s No Place Like Home

Dorothy was there. So was Glinda (she’s a good witch, looked suspiciously like one of the kindergarten teachers). The little house from Kansas spun around in the midst of guests during cocktail hour before everyone stepped along the yellow brick road, under a rainbow balloon arch, and into the Emerald City. Parents, both past and present, celebrated Wesley at the Skirball Center in March alongside alumni, faculty, and staff, and witnessed the school’s founders get teary-eyed grasping all that had come to pass in twenty years. From 1999, when Wesley was just a one-room schoolhouse on a dirt field with twelve kids (actually fourteen rooms, ninety students, on the campus of the First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood), to 2019 with over three-hundred students and having earned the respect of the larger Los Angeles community, a thriving, exceptional K-8 school emerged. For so many, that night and now, it was easy to explain how there’s no place like Wesley… no place like home. 49

A place for the community to come together: Goodness...where do I start? I mean the benefits of actually having a "teachers’ workroom" has been a major improvement. Knowing that I can go in and find supplies, make copies, etc. while not worrying about disturbing admin has been amazing. The additional work area for all of the faculty and staff has helped immensely. The turf and seeing the kids play freely without worrying about the dust flying everywhere from the dirt has also been life changing. The conference room has also been a huge help in setting up meetings. We have so many different committees at Wesley and it was always hard to find a quiet area to meet. The lounge has been my little piece of zen at Wesley :) It's hard to explain in words just how much all of the new construction has helped us!!! Michelle Allegra | Kindergarten Teacher | At Wesley since 1999

Capital Campaign New construction benefits Wesley in a big way History finds a home: As a roaming Middle Sschool teacher for two years (I think I taught Middle School History classes in every middle school classroom, the library, the music room, and even 5th grade!) it has certainly been terrific having a home classroom of my own. And what a lovely home it is! I feel incredibly lucky to have an amazing new classroom on the second floor of the Arts and Administration Building. It's quite spacious, has tons of storage space, and with so many large windows, I hardly ever need to turn the lights on as we are flooded with natural light throughout the day. I know the students greatly appreciate the new Middle School space, especially 8th grade who gets to have their lockers up there. And I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I love the new kitchen and faculty lounge. It’s spacious, open, and comfortable — a great place to get some work done or chill-out between classes with my colleagues. 52

Andy Campanella | Middle School History Teacher | At Wesley since 2004

Word is out that Wesley is a true gem: The Mixed Media room is a true stand out. Wesley has hosted faculty, staff, and administration from a wide variety of schools in the greater Southern California area with comments from the attendees about the beauty of our school! They had no idea what a gem Wesley is, and now they do! Thank you to our incredible capital campaign donors for their generosity and for giving Wesley the opportunity to grow and become the top notch school that it is! Olivia Brown | 3rd Grade Teaching Associate | At Wesley since 2016 Executive Director of SoCal POCIS (People of Color in Independent Schools)

Construction leads to collaboration: The teacher work room and faculty lounge have not only contributed to the overall well-being of staff, but they have also created increased collaboration between teachers and staff in various positions and grade levels. We now have spaces where we can exchange ideas, offer support, and improve curriculum, even if it’s just bumping into one another over the lunch hour. Laura Claus | 6th Grade English and History Teacher | At Wesley since 2015

New turf makes our hearts sing: The new turf field has gone beyond creating a clean, safe surface for our children to run, skip, jump and cartwheel, it has had a great effect on the music program at Wesley. No more clouds of dust blowing into the music room on a windy day! Looking forward to the day we can build a new music facility - I’ll be ready to fill it with song! Mary McGregor Lower School Music Teacher | At Wesley since 2004 53

Service Learning. Rearrange the words and it’s just that: learning about service, or how to help the world. Every year, each class explores the aspects of their particular focus, or cause, in an attempt to answer basic questions, the most important among them, “How can we make a difference?” Often tied into the curriculum, Service Learning allows students to come at a subject in unexpected ways. For instance, 1st graders year-long “animal” project builds up to a presentation about the history and habits of different fauna. For Service Learning, students might choose to sponsor a guide dog for the blind or develop skills in animal activism from visiting the SPCA. Service Learning is both “hands on” and intellectual. The results are memorable, the life lessons significant. photo:

7th Grade and Kindergarten collaborated to write letters in Spanish to an orphanage in Mexico as part of their Service Learning project. 57

IN MEMORIAM:

Pastor Joey K. McDonald The Wesley School lost a dear friend and founding member of our community when Reverend Doctor Joey K. McDonald passed away on October 16, 2017. Joey Kern McDonald was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1949 to Charles (Red) and Mary McDonald. He was the youngest of five children - Michaeline, Thomas, Peggy, and Kimberley. Joey was married nearly 42 years to Sue, and had two sons, Aaron and Ian. After ordination as a senior minister for the United Methodist Church, Pastor Joey served the churches in Garden Grove, Mission Viejo, Twenty-Nine Palms, Rubidoux, and North Hollywood. Wesley School owes its very beginnings to Pastor Joey who made it possible for us to found our school here on the First United Methodist Church campus with his simple yet beautiful statement, “Welcome home.” For 18 years, Pastor Joey was a committed and significant supporter of Wesley, as we grew and made changes to the campus. Pastor Joey was a good man who lived life at face value. He was a true and loyal friend and we will be forever grateful for the chance he took on our school. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. 67

“

We have always believed that WESLEY is our strength for all of our child's successes and accomplishments. Our child received a great base from Wesley, and since then never looked back. Our family would like to say thank you to all WESLEY families, and the entire staff, for giving us the opportunity to be members of the Wesley family.
