When photographer Daniel Dreifuss started working for the Santa Barbara Independent back in February, no one had much of a clue how dramatic of a year it would be, from the COVID-19 pandemic to Black Lives Matter protests to a heated election season. For this week’s issue, he compiled dozens of his best shots to recap a year of work. “Working to make sure I am safe as well as keeping the people I photograph safe is a challenge,” said Dreifuss when asked about challenging assignments. “Documenting the Foodbank of Santa Barbara — which is doing so much to help feed Santa Barbara — and editing it down to 10 photos while still showing their impact was a challenge.” He enjoyed preparing the cover story on pandemic pivots. “Santa Barbara is filled with talented people,” he said. “Seeing the awesome work that people of all ages are doing to get through the pandemic was fun and inspirational.” But COVID restrictions remained the biggest hurdle of all in 2020. “I do a lot of sanitizing my gear, my car, my masks, etcetera,” he said. “I never really thought I would have to take so many precautions just to photograph someone at a park.”

hat can anyone really hope to say about 2020? Maybe nothing. Or not much. This, after all, is our annual Year in Pictures issue. Perhaps the less said, the better. We could designate 2020 the Year of the Bat and leave it at that. Bats, it turns out, are the only mammals capable of flight. To get airborne — and stay that way — bat bodies must withstand sudden internal caloric explosions. Imagine being able to burn 16 times more energy than normal. That’s what bats do. By accomplishing this without blowing up also accounts for why they are uniquely capable of absorbing — and transmitting — the deadliest viruses on the planet without being killed in the process. This qualifies as one of the mysterious miracles of modern evolution. It also is responsible for the deadly global pandemic that now has us cowering in our makeshift bunkers waiting for it to be over. That so many Homo sapiens — allegedly the most intelligent animal on the planet — choose not to accept this reality qualifies as another one of the great mysteries of modern evolution. The good news, of course, is that things could be much worse. We do have vaccines, after all. And in less than a month, Donald Trump will no longer occupy the White House, no
matter how much kicking and screaming we’re forced to endure in the meantime. Trump governed exactly as he campaigned — by prolonged temper tantrum. Should we expect anything more from his defeat? A dignified exit? As we batten down the hatches in hopes of weathering the coming storms, all I can say is thank God for the small absurdities surrounding us. Why did the City of Santa Barbara, for example, provoke an international incident by dissing the City of Dingle, unceremoniously stripping that picturesque Irish seaport town of its sister city status? Since that transpired, Fungie, the only dolphin swimming in Dingle Bay, has mysteriously disappeared. Was it really worth it? And how is it that the equally picturesque town of Solvang has been seized by two years of nonstop civil strife, culminating in the recall of a city councilmember who was such a caustic and contemptuous character that 92 percent of the townspeople voted to give him the heave-ho? The good news is that the Santa Barbara City Council decided to convert State Street, from Haley to Sola, into a pedestrian boulevard — still open to bicycles, electric bikes, skateboards, electric skateboards, and of course dogs, and all the businesses along the way.
This, of course, has been talked about since the 1980s. But desperate times call for obvious remedies. Surprisingly, we chose not to ignore something merely because it was, well, so obvious. Government agencies and the people who would lead them tend to be long on fallibility, making them easy sport, especially for reporters like me. Every now and then, however, thanks must be given. As our community struggled to navigate through the deadly minefield of COVID-19, County Supervisor Gregg Hart, this year’s titular head of the board, began convening regular press events where our medical professionals could answer questions and transparently explain to the public what was happening. As of last counting, Hart convened 75 such events. December 22 would be his last. The plot, of course, keeps shifting, as do the rules. Remember the early days when we were still arguing whether it was necessary to ban cruise ships from the Santa Barbara harbor? How sweetly naïve. We had no clue. Hart, being the good son that he is, encouraged us all to be sure to call our mothers. Maybe that’s the real message of 2020. Call your mothers. —Nick Welsh

obituaries Allen Wayne Mills

Born in Oxnard, California, Allen was the oldest of four children of parents Bill and Arlene (Ross) Mills. Allen passed away at home with his son and wife at his side with the help of VNA Health Hospice. He was 72 years old. Allen grew up in Port Hueneme when it was full of lemon groves, not houses. He lived near the ocean and spent many hours at the beach and was a lifelong surfer. His grandparents from his mother’s side had a small farm in Ojai, and Allen spent many summers wandering in the oak trees and fishing at Lake Casitas. He also spent many hours Grandma Kurtz’s house in Port Hueneme learning to cook. Allen graduated from Hueneme High School in 1966. At that time, the war was escalating in Vietnam and many young men, to avoid being drafted, fled to Canada or were sent to jail. Allen was told that if he joined, they would send him to Germany. Although promised that he would not go, he was sent to Vietnam. He was nineteen. While there, he was exposed to Agent Orange, a carcinogenic herbicide sprayed on the forests of Vietnam to cause deforestation to better see the enemy. This cancerous chemical caused many of our young men to develop cancers early in their lives, cutting their lives short. Allen developed early prostate cancer in his late fourties due to this exposure. When he was discharged from the Army, he became an avid antiwar supporter and environmentalist. In 1970, he married his high school sweetheart, Anita Tricomo, the little Italian girl that had recently moved to Oxnard from Michigan. They were happily married for fifty years and nine months. They moved to Berkeley, CA where Allen attended UC Berkeley. In 1976 they had their only child, Erek. Allen so loved being a father and enjoyed coaching baseball, camping, surfing, Boy Scouts and fishing with his son. He also taught Erek to cook and bar-b-q. Later, Erek’s career as a Firefighter made Allen very proud. Allen’s cooking skills were legendary with many dinner 12

parties and lively conversations. He met two Italians that were living next door to him and they taught him many new cooking skills. These friends have returned to Italy and Allen and Anita have visited them several times in Italy and enjoyed cooking together again. Thanks to Max and Laura for this time of wonderful cooking and eating fests! In his early fourties, after trying several careers, Allen wanted to enter the alternative health field and studied to be a Naturopathic Doctor. While pursing this career, Anita developed a breast problem and they went on the search for the cause. An herbalist friend told them about a Lymphatic Therapist in Ojai and upon the first visit, Anita experienced a dramatic reduction in her swelling and pain. Allen immediately saw the potential of a powerful therapy and began his study of the Lymphatic System. He discovered the Vodder Method, around since the 1930’s and widely used in Europe. Lymphatics are taught in the massage schools across the country. Allen had found his life’s work and developed a method of non-invasive lymphatic drainage using manual techniques and an electric handheld device to move the stuck lymph fluid. He opened the Center for Lymphatic Health in downtown Santa Barbara in 1995 and was in business for 23 years with his wife Anita managing the business. They offered lymphatic sessions, classes to teach the Mills Method and the sale of instruments. People came from all over the US and other countries from the website. Many people received the natural healing from their lymphatic sessions and improved their immune systems. Allen became known as a great healer, teacher and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Anita, son Erek (Misty), grandsons Mike and Erek, Jr., sister Carol Scott (Dan) and many family members and friends. A big thank you to wonderful doctors, nurses and therapists in our community. Louis M. Giuliano Jr. 10/9/1927 - 12/14/2020
Louis M. Giuliano Jr. passed away on December 14, 2020, at Channel Islands Post Acute nursing home in Santa Barbara shortly after entering hospice care. He was 93. Born October 9, 1927, in New York City, Louis was the son of Louis M. Guiliano Sr. and Rachelle Guiliano, both of whom predeceased him. Louis changed the spelling of his name to Giuliano in the 1990s so it would be pronounced correctly when he traveled overseas. And it actually was the original spelling of the family name when his ancestors emigrated to America via Ellis Island, when a clerk misspelled it. Louis made news in Santa Barbara in November 2003 when he was finally awarded a Purple Heart 57 years after having earned it with heroic acts protecting his platoon on Okinawa in World War II. Having lied about his age to enlist, the 17-year-old combat Marine landed on the beaches of Okinawa in April 1945. He was ordered to move up into the hills to protect the beach area from the Japanese. Louis and a fellow Marine, Jacob Christoff, encountered about 35 Japanese coming up the trail. The duo opened fire on the enemy, Christoff shot a scout, but his carbine jammed so he started hurling grenades into the middle and rear of the column to prevent them from escaping, Louis shot a second scout and a soldier manning the machine gun, then jumped out of his foxhole and ran about 50 feet to engage the other two Japanese in hand-to-hand combat. He suffered a knife wound in his left arm, cuts on his face, a bullet creased his left leg, was

beaten with rifle butts, and he was kicked in the groin as he used his K-bar knife to dispatch the enemy. When other Marines reached him, he had already taken out the enemy and had to be treated by medics. He spent six weeks in sick bay recuperating from his wounds. Prior to combat, Louis had seven weeks of basic training, then advance combat training at Camp Lejeune, special training in the Do or Die program, learning to kill without a weapon, dirty street fighting, special weapons and Japanese style of Judo. The Marines compacted 15 years of combat training into these sessions. Louis had been inspired to join the Marines because his father had already enlisted in the Army Air Force in February 1942. Louis Sr. was sent to China with the 14th Army as part of the Flying Tigers, and was a bomber pilot. On his enlistment application, Louis had changed his birth year to 1925. But the Marines allowed him to remain enlisted because by the time they found out, he had already successfully completed boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. He served from November 18, 1943, to March 9, 1947. He returned to the U.S. in 1946, and served as personal bodyguard to James Forrestal, then-secretary of the Navy. One year later he was honorably discharged. Louis got married in 1951 to the former Caroline Colombo in South Ozone Park, NY. The couple had two sons, Robert and Edward, now 69 and 65, respectively. The couple divorced in 1960 and Louis remained in California, living in Santa Barbara and then Carpinteria for the rest of his life. Caroline passed away in Reno, Nevada, in 2017. Louis’s mother, Rachelle Schnier (having remarried and widowed) lived in Carpinteria for many years, and passed away in 1986. Louis was socially active in Santa Barbara, having served as an usher during Masses at the Old Mission for many years. Actually, a few times situations got rough and he had to “bounce” disruptive people from the church, even disarming one who brandished a knife. He belonged to Parents Without Partners, was active in social events at the Old Mission, including as general chairman for a steak barbecue with his son, Edward, performing on the drums with his band, The Rainbow. In later years, he attended Mt. Carmel church in Montecito. Louis was also a lifelong member of the Elks Lodge in Santa Barbara. He enjoyed hanging
out at the Yacht Club and various Starbucks with friends to shoot the breeze. Welch-Ryce Haider Funeral Chapels handled Louis’s preparation for flight to Arlington National Cemetery for a full military burial. The date is to be determined. No wake was permitted due to Covid-19 restrictions imposed by Governor Gavin Newsom. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Louis’s name.
Lawrence Howard Coy (Larry Coy) 2/29/1944 - 12/18/2020
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Howard Coy (Larry Coy) on December 18, 2020, at The Californian of Santa Barbara, where he had lived for several years. Larry was 76 years old. Larry leaves his loving children, Adriana (Tim) Stavish, Matthew (Dani) Coy and Amy Lee Coy (John, dec.) Bardi; his former wife and longtime friend Susan Scolastico; his grandchildren, Anthony Coy (Aubry), Bradley Coy (dec.), Dylan Stavish, Allison Stavish, and Bennett Coy; his great-grandson, Alexander Coy; and his sister, Cathy (Don, dec.) Adams and her two daughters, Laura and Heather. Larry’s family would especially like to thank the wonderful staff of The Californian of Santa Barbara skilled nursing facility, where he was kindly cared for in the last years of his life until his passing. Larry was a kind, caring, and creative man, known for his innovative ideas, sense of humor, and ability to weather difficult situations with grace. He was much loved and will be very missed by friends and family. Deena Estrin Gabie 12/21/1920 - 8/1/2017
Joseph (Joe) Pomatto Jr passed peacefully at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Tuesday, December 15, 2020. Born July 18, 1936 in Santa Barbara, California to Joseph James Pomatto Sr and Sarah Lessett Pomatto. He grew up on the family ranch in Glen Annie Canyon where he was a member of 4H and raised sheep and cattle. He graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1955 where he played football for the Dons. Out of high school he went to work for the Batastini brothers as a heavy equipment operator. Throughout his 42 year career he worked for Lambert Construction, South Coast Construction, Granite Construction and retired at 62 from Lash Construction. In his first marriage he had three daughters, Kathleen, Jacqueline and JoAnn. He raised them in Goleta where they spent a majority of their time on the family ranch, spending their weekends and summers just as he did. He loved boating and spending family vacations at Lake Nacimiento and grew up hunting with his father and friends that continued into his adult life. The Pomatto family name runs deep in the Goodland. Joe's great-grandfather James came to Goleta with his two brothers from Turin, Italy in 1890. The three brothers bought 368 acres of land on the west side of Glen Annie Road in 1916, converting the land from a dairy farm to a walnut ranch and later avocados, oranges and lemons. Although the land was sold off over the years, Joe and his daughters were able to grow up and experience the beauty of the property until the family home was sold in 1994. In 1986 Joe married Betty Warkentin. They enjoyed camping in their motorhome on the central coast and took many cruises. They both enjoyed attending the Santa Maria Raceway on Saturday nights with their grandkids and most Sunday mornings you would find them at Domingo's Cafe in Goleta for breakfast with friends and family. Joe is survived by his wife of 34 years, Betty Pomatto, sister Josephine Erranova, his three daughters, Kathleen Lutz (Nelson), Jacqueline Hilliard (William), JoAnn Pomatto-Gomez (Anthony). We dearly miss Deena Estrin Gabie who would have been 100 years old this month. It has been 3 years since her passing on August 1, 2017. She is still with us in thought and spirit, and the strength of her spirit and energy will always be with us. Deena was a very positive person, an independent thinker, young minded, very accepting, open to new ideas, and way ahead of her time in many ways. It is hard to believe that she was born in the same year that women in the US were first given the full right to vote. The 19th Amendment became part of the U.S. Constitution four months before her birth. Deena was born in Chicago Illinois on December 21, 1920, the daughter of Russian Immigrants who emigrated to the USA to escape from the Pogroms of Europe and to start a fresh life. She had one sister and they grew up on the West Side of Chicago, across the street from Douglas Park. They learned about life while experiencing the challenging years of the great depression. This was a time when people helped each other, learned to live on a shoestring, invest in the future, and be very resourceful. Although less than 5% of women in the US obtained college degrees in her time, Deena had the ambition, and her parents encouraged her. She was the first in her family to attend a 4-year college, graduating from UC Berkeley with a BA in Business. At Berkeley she met her husband, who was in the same program. Although she loved California, they moved back to Chicago to be near her parents, where she raised her two children. Deena always had a dream to return to California, and in the late 60’s her family relocated to Orange County, California where she lived for over 30 years. For many years Deena had a tax preparation business and helped many clients. During the last 17 years of her life, she absolutely loved living in Santa Barbara. She moved here to be closer to family, and later developed some great, mutually supportive friends that she
loved to go to lunch with, and to socialize with. She was a regular at the Schmooze Room, where she enjoyed a sense of community, group lunches, along with educational & entertaining programs. For exercise and health, she was very active in Chi Gong with Dr. Herb Coverdale. She contributed her good health to regular practice, which she deeply enjoyed. Deena had an appreciation for life and would often drive along Cabrillo Blvd.,and stop to enjoy the ocean and get some fresh air. Deena believed in the power of the mind. At an early age she decided that she did not want to wear eyeglasses and trained her eyes, so she never had to wear them again. Even in later years, she passed all DMV eye exams and was driving around town until her mid 90’s. Her mind was very sharp until her final days. Until the last months of her life, she managed to take very few medications, mostly relying on deep breathing, meditation, exercise, and her own research. Deena will always be an inspiration for the rest of us. Like she always said, “Keep Calm and Carry On.”

Barbara is survived by her four children: Michael, of Santa Barbara; Mark (Brenda), of Paradise, CA; Mary Benenati (Jesse), of Santa Barbara, and Matthew, of Santa Barbara. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as Bob’s sister, Patricia Thompson Perry (Carl) of Santa Barbara. Barbara leaves behind treasured memories and rich traditions that will be forever embraced and cherished by those who love her. Special thanks and deepest gratitude to Hector Guerrerro and all of those who provided care and support throughout Barbara’s long illness. Attended by close friends, family and many grandchildren, a private graveside service was held at Santa Barbara Cemetery on September 22. Rush C. Hinsdale, Jr. 1/4/1928 - 12/16/2020
Barbara Mary McColm passed away peacefully at her home in Santa Barbara on September 19, 2020. Barbara, who was known for her sophisticated beauty, grace and loving dedication to her family and lifelong friends, was 84 years old. Barbara was born in Chicago, Illinois, on April 9, 1936 to Beatrice and John Hundt. While living in Phoenix, Arizona, she met Robert Carter McColm, who was stationed at Luke Air Force Base. They were married in 1955. Barbara and Bob moved to Los Angeles, and then to Santa Barbara, where their shared interest in art and design merged seamlessly with the ownership and expansion of the Santa Barbara based Scandinavian furniture store, Danica House. Barbara traveled with Bob to many countries for both business and pleasure, making close friendships across the world. With her eloquent and gracious hospitality, their house was always open to visiting friends from near and far. Many of Barbara’s most treasured days were shared with Bob in France, walking the cobble stone streets of Paris, collecting art, visiting
On December 16, 2020, at the age of 92, Rush C. Hinsdale Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Santa Barbara, California. Rush was born on January 4, 1928 in Los Angeles, California to Rush C. Hinsdale and Bernice Hinsdale. He was the oldest of three children, Rush, Ann and Tom. While in school at Beverly Hills High, he was on the swim team and enjoyed playing volleyball, paddle tennis and family outings to the beach on the weekends. He also enjoyed driving and working on his 1934 Ford Coupe. After graduating high school in 1946, Rush went on to graduate from Stanford University in 1950 with a BA in political science. That same year Uncle Sam came calling and he was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed at Fort Ord in Monterey, CA. While at Stanford he met his first wife, Martha Ann Wooddell from Honolulu, Hawaii. They were married on May 12, 1951 in Palo Alto, CA. Martha Ann joined her new husband in

Seaside, CA. while he served at Fort Ord. While in Seaside they had their first child, Rush Hinsdale III. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, they moved to Southern California where they had a second child, Andy, born in 1953. From 1952 thru 1963 they lived in various houses in the L.A. area finally settling in Pacific Palisades. Rush worked for his father’s mortgage brokerage, The Rush C Hinsdale Co. and eventually took over the business. He was quite active in politics and the Mortgage Bankers Association. He loved being with his family, going to the beach, teaching his boys how to surf, fishing, sailing and playing tennis. He also enjoyed camping and backpacking in the Sierras. He was an avid surfer in those days and was one of the original members of the San Onofre Surf Club. In 1963 the family moved to Santa Barbara, Ca. It would be the start to a new chapter in his life. He bought Sears Realty in Montecito, CA. and ran it for a couple of years. Later he became an independent real estate investor. In 1965 Rush and Martha Ann went their separate ways and divorced. It was not long before he met and fell in love with Nancy McKinnon. They were married on June 10, 1967 in Santa Barbara, CA. Together they raised two children, Kellie and Greg. Once again Rush loved being with his family and doing all the fun family things he had done in the past. He did not surf quite as much but became an avid tennis player and golfer and inspired his children to take part in the sports. He also became an avid skier and took the family on ski trips mostly to Mammoth Mt. where he loved skiing for free once he turned 60 years old. He also loved traveling and took his family all over the world. He and Nancy enjoyed swimming at the Coral Casino where they could be seen several times a week. Rush is survived by his wife Nancy, his sons Andy and Greg, his daughter Kellie and his three grandchildren Taylor, Shannon and Halston as well as his younger brother Tom, nieces and nephews. Rush was a wonderful husband, father and friend to many and will be remembered as a loving, caring and honest person.

obituaries Clark Lyle Whitmore 12/31/1953 - 11/12/2020
We lost a father, son, brother, and friend November 12, 2020, of sudden heart failure, in Goleta, California. Clark Lyle Whitmore was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming on December 31, 1953, as the fourth of seven children to Elizabeth and Harley Whitmore. The family moved to Hawaii in 1963 where his father took a new position with NCR Corporation. It was there that Clark had his first surfing experience, getting a surfing lesson at Waikiki from none other than Hawaiian legend Duke Kahanamoku, the Olympic Multiple Gold Medalist in swimming and father of modern surfing. The family moved back to Santa Barbara in 1966. He attended La Colina Junior High, and San Marcos High School, Class of 1972. He graduated twice from UCSB, with a degree in Environmental Studies in 1976 and Mechanical Engineering in 1981. Perhaps influenced by “The Duke,” Clark became an excellent swimmer and water polo player. He played for the Gaucho Water Polo team in the early seventies, where the team earned a 6th national ranking. In 1976, he got a job as a roustabout for ARCO. That experience prompted him to further his engineering education, at SBCC and then UCSB. As a mechanical engineer Clark worked for local aerospace companies including Delco, Santa Barbara Research Center, Santa Barbara Remote Sensing, and AEC-Able Engineering. He worked on the Enhanced Thematic Mapper (Landsat), MODIS (Earth Observing System) and VIIRS (JPSS NOAA) instruments which are still in orbit gathering data about our planet. He also worked at AEC-Able on the deployable mast for the solar array for the International Space Station. In 1996, he bought Ideal Machining, a machine shop in Old Town Goleta. He learned on his own the skills needed to become a good machinist. That included resurrecting an early model Bridgeport CNC milling machine for which he wrote machine code on a salvaged computer. From the time he bought Ideal Machining until his death, he produced many fine parts for BEI and other local companies. Clark met Karen Ansberry in 1979, and they married in 1981. They had two wonder14

ful children; Madison Whitmore, who is currently the Deputy DA for Santa Barbara County in Santa Maria, and Glen Whitmore, who also got a degree in mechanical engineering (UCI) and currently works for a startup company in the Bay area. Clark was extremely proud of their accomplishments. Clark loved surfing and the ocean. After moving back to Santa Barbara from Hawaii, he had many good sessions up and down the Central Coast at spots like C Street, Rincon, Campus Point, Devereux, Naples, El Cap, and Jalama, as well as some great surfing adventures back to Hawaii. His last board was a thruster he shaped and glassed himself. Golf was another one of Clark’s passions. He was a member of the Sandpiper Men’s Club for over 30 years and was quite a good player. He got his handicap as low as 5 while playing Sandpiper and the other local public courses: La Purisima, Glen Annie, Rancho San Marcos, and SB Muni. He was also a member of the Santa Barbara Research Center (now Raytheon) Golf League from 1984 to the present. He would always play Sandpiper on his birthday, New Year’s Eve, with his friends. On one of those wonderful birthday rounds in the 1990s, he aced the 11th hole, using a 6 iron from 185 yards. Contrary to the urging of his friends to keep the ball as a special memento, he kept playing it but, alas, lost it over the cliff on the 13th hole! Clark loved Caddyshack and when he wore his bucket hat, he looked a lot like Carl Spackler. If it were ever raining when we were playing golf, no matter how hard, he’d always quote Carl: “I don’t think the heavy stuff ’s gonna come down for quite a while.” Clark always said have a backup plan, and his Plan B is surfing among the clouds with the “dudes” from Del Playa and playing his weekly golf games with his friends of 40 years. Clark is survived by his daughter Madison Whitmore, son Glen Whitmore, brothers Jim Whitmore, JB Whitmore and Phil Whitmore, and mother Elizabeth Whitmore. No memorial services are planned now, but on New Year’s Eve, raise a glass, play a round, or catch a wave for our friend and colleague. Clark you are missed.

Undoubtedly, this was a nightmare year for restaurants because of policies enacted in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, there were 38 openings and 52 closings. The most openings were in November (7) while the most closings were in March and May (8 each). This year was tied for fewest openings in the 14 years that I have been keeping dining statistics (38 restaurants opened in 2007) while it experienced the second-most closings in that time period (58 restaurants closed in 2015). Most restaurants are still experiencing extreme difficulty, and the full picture of what really happened in the year from hell will come in 2021. The Santa Barbara.com Restaurant Guide experienced its highest visitor traffic in 25 years when I launched a takeout and delivery guide in mid-March just as the first COVID-19 lockdown began.
