Hurry to ‘Master Class’ before it leaves Myriad Gardens stage Lyric Theater “Master Class” Terrance McNally, author Michael Baron, Director Jan McDaniel, Musical Director By Franci Hart Theatre Critic Natalie Cordone’s energetic portrayal of Maria Callas in Lyric’s Tony and Drama Desk Award winning “Master Class” was masterful. With so much of the drama in soliloquy,

expressing Callas’ opinions about art, Cordone had the audience entranced, eagerly awaiting her next revelation. “Master Class” is set in the 1970s toward the end of the great Callas’ career. She is giving a master class at Julliard and the audience plays the students. Manny (Jan McDaniel) is the ever patient accompanist, obviously used to dealing with explosive, artistic personalities. Chairman’s Award recipient Christian Keesee is chairman of Kirkpatrick Bank and Kirkpatrick Oil & Gas Co. Keesee began working in banks at the age of 13. While many of his first tasks were basic functions like answering phones and running errands, the friendships and experiences prepared him for a lifetime of enjoyment in banking and philanthropy. After finishing college, he worked in Washington, D.C., as an intern for Sen. David Boren, then returned to Oklahoma City and began his work with the Kirkpatrick Foundation as an associate. As the banking crisis of the 1980s began to unfold, Keesee started looking for banking opportunities. Eventually, he and his team identified a small bank in Edmond named American Bank that had been taken over by the F.D.I.C. They re-branded it Kirkpatrick Bank in honor of Keesee’s grandparents. The movie will premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival next June and will be distributed by Warner Brothers and HBO Max. Land of Gold tells the story of Kiran, a first-generation Punjabi trucker and anxious father-to-be, who discovers Elena, a 10year-old undocumented MexicanAmerican, stowed away on his truck during a cross-country trip. As Kiren helps Elena find her way home, the unlikely pair connect over a shared history and evolving expectations of what family truly is. The film is written and directed by Nardeep Khurmi, a filmmaker and actor from Philadelphia who studied at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Khurmi has directed several television series, documentaries and shorts. His most acclaimed film is the short film Pagg, which electrified film festivals in 2018, winning the Palm Springs International Shorts Fest and First Glance Film Festival. As an actor, Khurmi trained with the Upright Citizens

Brigade after leaving NYU. He has appeared in the television shows 911, SWAT, The Odd Couple, and Keenan, and enjoys recurring roles on Jane the Virgin and The Bold and the Beautiful. He voices more than 10 characters on the Disney animated show Mira, Royal Detective. Pallavi Sastry, who is producing and costarring in the movie, is a proud graduate of the University of Oklahoma. After earning her degree from the Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre, Sastry moved to New York City in 2008 to pursue her acting career. Since then, she has appeared on several television shows, including Nurse Jackie, The Affair, Master of None, and a three-year recurring arc as Cameron on Blue Bloods. Casady moves to grab and go lunch system

unch is the class everyone loves, full of student gossip and hanging out with friends without any worries. At Casady School, students and faculty enjoy their food in a way that expresses the strong connection in this community and how much of a family we all are. As we convene in Calvert Hall, everyone says prayer and then eats. As lunch starts, students ask the ones around them for certain entrees, sides or condiments and take their food and then pass it on to someone

CASADY COMMUNITY

else. This hands-on method helps students and faculty socialize and become familiar with each other. Last year, Casady School had to figure out a new way to have lunch while following CDC guidelines. So, instead of family style, Casady School elected to have a grab and go lunch system this year. The grab and go sys-

tem is designed so that two grades eat in the dining hall while the other grades are in designated classrooms. Some students did not like this system as they ran back and forth to different places whereas others complained that their food had spilled or leaked out in their plastic bag while walking back from the dining hall. However, with these constant lunch shifts, I learned how much I missed being around my friends at lunch and how important it is to socialize with the people around you. To me, it seems that we

take things for granted and that we only miss them once they are taken away. These complaints may seem trivial and maybe they are. With the COVID pandemic continuing on in our world right now, a school’s lunch system may not seem important, but it is. The constant changes we had in our lunch system last year prove the severity of this disease and how far our school will go to keep us safe. These transitions in lunch, as small as they seem, prove how important it is to look out for each other.

Once There Were Wolves, a novel by Charlotte McConaghy

C

harlotte McConaghy has quickly followed her debut bestselling novel Migrations with Once There Were Wolves, another sure winner with readers. The Australian author captures the best of animal and human conflicts to focus on the rewilding of Scottish forests with wolves. The heroine, biologist Inti Flynn, is passionate for returning a balance to earth and as a conservationist she joins an expedition that would return 14 grey wolves after an absence of centuries from remote Sydney to the Highlands of Scotland. Her love of nature was passed to her by her father who had once been a logger in Canada but had become a naturalist. Inti and her twin sister Aggie Flynn shared genes and a rare mirror touch synesthesia which was not a disease but just a different way

of living where the brain causes the body to feel the sensations one sees. So begins the trail of the story of Inti and Aggie, through Australia, Canada and into Scotland with the Wolf Trust (Cairngorms Project) to release the first grey wolves. Why Scotland? The ecosystem there was in crises, and there was a need to reduce the CO-2 emissions that contribute to climate change and provide habitats for native species. However, the rural population of farmers and herders was not so eager to see this happen for fear the predators would kill their stock. There was local resistance, a murder, ideological differences, love, cruelty, search, research. No matter that similar projects had succeeded in Yellowstone National Park. Rewilding efforts in Scotland and a healthy ecosystem faced heavy agriculture and grazing lands opposition. The beautiful but simple truths of nature such as trees speaking and caring for each other through their roots, encourage Inti who has been made aware

of evil in the world by her mother who believes that humans are more dangerous to each other than animals could ever be. That darkness has descended on the twins whose lives become conflicted by the mixture of humanity and animalistic impulses that live within us. Reading this book is more than just learning about wolves. It is a step toward understanding the interdependence of the natural and the human world as fear of the unknown and the wild is explored and compared with the cruelties with which humans are capable. McConaghy writes with poetic beauty and fervor of her own ecologic leanings. Her smooth transitions from threats to love interests to ecosystem concern is seamless. Her first novel has been printed in 20 plus languages. It is just a matter of time before Once There Were Wolves will be passing that mark on its way to becoming another national fiction treasure. Thanks to Full Circle Book Store for sharing its books with FRIDAY readers.

FOOTBALL | WEEK 4 ROUNDUP: ANTLERS TAKE NO. 3 STILLLWATER TO DOUBLE OT

Irish hold off Lawton Ike in high-scoring 2nd half By Jason Jewell Sports Editor With just under two minutes left in the third quarter of last Friday night’s game, the McGuinness football team built a 49-17 lead over Lawton Eisenhower and looked to be well on its way to a comfortable win before a capacity crowd at Pribil Stadium. The Eagles had a different idea, however, as they scored 21 unanswered points before Irish tailback Michael Taffee plunged for a 1-

yard touchdown run to give McGuinness a wild 56-41 victory in the district opener for both teams. “We came out flat in the second half,” Irish coach Bryan Pierce said after the game. “The tables kind of got turned on us but I like the fight in our players.” Despite committing four turnovers, the Irish (2-2, 1-0 District 5A-2) had nearly 500 yards of total offense. Taffe rushed for 262 yards on 28 carries and accounted for six

touchdowns, including three in the first half. The play of the game occurred late in the second quarter after Taffe mishandled a kickoff which forced McGuinness to start on its own 1-yard line. On thirdand-11, quarterback River Warren hit Kellen Fraille on a slant and broke free for a 99yard touchdown and put the Irish up 28-7 at halftime. Lawton Eisenhower battled back to score five times in the second half to close to an 8point deficit before Taffe’s final touchdown to end the rally. CHARGERS RUN OVER MCLOUD

McGuinness’ Kellen Fraille (20) and quarterback River Warren flash “99” on the sidelines after the pair hooked up for a 99-yard TD pass in the second quarter.

Erupting for six touchdowns in the first quarter, Heritage Hall cruised to a 46-13 victory against McLoud last Friday in the district opener at Pop Murray Field. Quarterback Will Pague threw three touchdown passes to lead the 3A No. 3 Chargers (4-0, 1-0 3A1). Paque connected

with Gavin Freeman twice for 20 and 8 yards and Orie Walker on a 40-yard score. Tailback River Faulkner added a pair of TD runs covering 3 and 35 yards, while defensive back Nick Keith returned an interception 31 yards for another score. Kicker Luke Butler chipped in a 25-yard field goal and nailed all five extra-point attempts.

STILLWATER TOPS ANTLERS IN 2 OT After battling toothand-nail against one of the top teams in 6A-II, Deer Creek endured a 35-28 double-overtime loss to No. 3 Stillwater last Friday night at Heflin Field. The No. 9 Antlers (31, 0-1 6A-II-1) controlled much of the game before the Pioneers scored with 8 seconds left to force OT. Quarterback Brett

Pense connected with Jevion Jones for touchdowns of 9 and 80 yards and defensive back Brysen Rouse returned an interception 97 yards for a score. Gavin Smith scored on a 1-yard run for Deer Creek in the first overtime, but a sack and three straight incompletions kept the Antlers out of the end zone in the second OT. CROSS COUNTRY ROUNDUP

Mathis runs to title at Tulsa Washington Leading a pack of four teammates in the top 25, Casady’s Larry Mathis cruised to a big victory at the Come Run with the Hornets cross country meet last weekend hosted by Tulsa Washington. Mathis completed the 5-kilometer course at O’Brien Park in Tulsa in 15:46.11, more than a minute ahead of the field. His win helped the Cyclones to

fourth in the team standings. Teammate Shanta Ramdas showed well in the meet, finishing third in 20:23.65 over the same 5K course and also leading the girls to fourth place. Three other Cyclone boys made the top 25, including Ashton Hale in 13th place, followed by Ayden Kerr in 14th and David Craine in 21st place.

Anna Ungvari paced a duo of Casady girls in the top 25 in 19th place and Julia Jankenecht came in 25th place. CHARGERS TAKE 4TH AT PRE-STATE Six Fridayland teams competed at the Edmond Pre-State meet last Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe, site of the state meets scheduled for later this month.

The Heritage Hall boys led the way in fourth place, followed by the Mount St. Mary boys and McGuinness girls in eighth place, the Mount St. Mary girls in ninth and Irish boys in 10th places. Harding Charter Prep’s Ryan McLaughlin paced the local athletes with a fifth-place finish in the Class 4A division. Mount St. Mary’s

Casady’s Larry Mathis, second from left, won the individual title at the Run for the Hornets meet at Tulsa Washington. Teammates are, from left, Ayden Kerr, Mathis, Ashton Hale and David Craine.
