www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk THE 390 Duke isn’t particularly big or powerful, but it’s an important bike for KTM. “The Missing Link”, one orange-shirted worker called it. This stylish, if familiar looking machine bridges the gap between the Austrian firm’s big single, the 690 Duke, and the smaller 125 and 200cc Dukes that have been hits since being introduced in the last couple of years. And the 390’s significance goes further than that, because this model is a milestone for KTM: the first that has been sold in all of its markets – currently 76 worldwide. It has been created to appeal to riders moving up from small-capacity bikes, especially in developing countries, and also to budget-conscious commuters in mature markets, and learners limited by the new A2 licence. It’s an important enough model for KTM to summon the world’s press to Mattighofen, near Salzburg, for a tour of the factory and a blast on the roads nearby. Like the smaller Dukes, the 390 is built at Pune in India, by KTM’s partner Bajaj, before being shipped to Austria for a final check. However, the Alpine spring weather was mild enough to let the mid-sized single show what it could do.

What’s new?

KTM’s latest small-bore bike, the 390 Duke, is sharp, smart and ready to do battle

The 390 looks sharp, with its stubby, angular shape, and its bright orange frame and wheels. And it could hardly be anything but fun to ride, given that it’s essentially the capable 200 Duke fitted with a new and bigger engine. The engine has 375cc capacity (the 390 designation is for marketing reasons), with twin overhead cams and four valves. It’s a completely new motor, built to be as compact as possible so it can fit in the same space as the smaller capacity units. The only shared components are the camshaft followers.

Peak output is 44bhp, which is 32kW, so is under the new A2 licence category’s maximum power limit of 35kW. But because the Duke is so light, at a claimed 139kg dry, its power-toweight ratio exceeds the A2 licence limit of 0.2kW per kilogram. So KTM has developed a fuel-injection mod that reduces max output to 30kW and allows the bike to be ridden by A2 licence holders. The 390’s tubular steel frame layout is identical to that of the smaller singles. But there are some minor changes to allow fitment of ABS brakes (standard fitment in most markets), and KTM has also used higher grade steel tubing so load capacity could be increased to 375kg. The 125 and 200 Duke are also adopting both those changes this year. Like its smaller siblings, the 390 wears cycle parts that are mostly made in India by subsidiaries of European specialists. The 43mm forks and rear shock are by an offshoot of WP, KTM’s own suspension firm. Brakes are single discs at each end from Bybre, linked to Brembo. Wheels are similar aluminium castings with 17-inch diameters, but the 390 boasts Metzelers instead of Indian-made tyres.

What’s it like to ride?

After I’d climbed aboard outside our launch base hotel in Salzburg, my first impression was of the new bike’s similarity to the 125 Duke. Its onepiece handlebar is slightly raised, and sits alongside a small, orange-faced digital instrument panel that comes to life with KTM’s ‘Ready to Race’ slogan, before the bike fires up with a deep but restrained single-pot beat from its stubby, low-level exhaust system. This bike is a simple road-going single but it’s a KTM, so it was bound to have a reasonably sporty character. The riding position is fairly upright but the

www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk footrests are quite high and rear set, though I didn’t find my legs getting cramped despite being tall. The tank is wider at its front but I just about had enough room for my knees, so most riders should have no problems. At 800mm the seat isn’t particularly low, but the bike is so light that shorter riders should also cope okay. Heading out through Salzburg traffic, the Duke was as manoeuvrable and easy to control as you’d expect of such a slim and light bike. The controls were easy to use, there’s a reasonable amount of steering lock, and the engine pulled from low revs with a very smooth throttle response. With six gears the KTM was never going to be as effortless as a scooter, but for urban use it was still a pleasure to ride.

Honda CB500F, £4650

The CB500F is the naked roadster model of Honda’s trio of 471cc parallel twins, but despite that it’s a close match for KTM’s single. With a claimed 47bhp the Honda is fractionally more powerful and has more torque, so is a bit faster. It also handles and stops well, although at over 190kg it’s a fair bit heavier. The two bikes are very close on price, and both come with ABS. It’s a tough choice, but the good news is you won’t go wrong with either.

And it was pretty lively, too. On the main road heading out of town, it thrummed up to an indicated 70mph quickly enough, and sat with the slightly hard-to-read tacho bar showing about 7000rpm, feeling smooth and relaxed. Or at least as relaxed as you’ll ever be when riding a naked bike on a cool morning in Austria, with only a tiny flyscreen to keep off the blustery wind. That wind was strong enough to affect the Duke’s performance, because at one point the bike took an age to climb past 90mph on a clear main road. But later in the day, with the wind at my back and my chin on the tank, the KTM shot up to the ton mark and was still accelerating when I shut off, short of a likely top speed of about 110mph. For maximum performance you have to keep the motor spinning up towards the 9500rpm mark at which its maximum output is produced. But the single is impressively flexible for a unit of just 375cc, so inexperienced riders shouldn’t have any problems. A couple of times I needed a second flick of the left boot to get the bike into top gear, but the six-speed box was generally very smooth and positive. Handling was equally rider-friendly, characterised by a wonderfully agile yet stable feel that made the KTM great fun when we reached some twisty roads in the Alpine foothills. Its lack of weight is one important factor. At under 150kg fully fuelled the Duke is more than 40kg lighter than Honda’s CB500F twin, to name one obvious and similarly priced rival. Add reasonably sporty geometry, fairly narrow tyres and wide handlebars to the equation, and it’s no surprise that the KTM could be flicked into hairpins with delicious speed and ease. Yet its steering was also very neutral, so the bike simply went where

it was aimed. Suspension at both ends was good: fairly firm, so bigger bumps were felt though the seat, but well damped enough to keep control. In short the Duke felt fairly basic but sporty, sweet handling and very enjoyable, pretty much exactly as you’d expect from a relatively inexpensive KTM. With many of the tight bends damp, I was also glad it was wearing Metzelers, rather than the Indian tyres still used on the smaller Dukes. The Sportec M5s are respectably wide, the rear a 150-section, and felt very secure even on what looked like slippery surfaces. I wasn’t quite as impressed by the KTM’s braking power. Its front disc is slightly bigger than those of the smaller Dukes (300mm against 280mm), but I thought the four-pot Bybre radial caliper needed a fairly firm squeeze of the lever to get the bike stopping hard. Some riders disagreed, feeling the brake was more than powerful enough for the bike’s intended customers. What we agreed on is that the Bosch ABS system worked superbly, and that the KTM’s overall stopping ability and safety put it light years ahead of the bikes on which we learned to ride. The Duke should also be respectably practical, at least by KTM single

standards. Fuel consumption dropped to 56mpg with hard use but averaged 75mpg under more typical riding (according to the instrument panel), which would give a reasonable range of well over 100 miles from the 11-litre tank. The seat is quite firm and thin but at least there’s a usable pillion seat, complete with grab-handles that double as bungee points. There’s a typically comprehensive list of accessories, ranging from an alarm and soft luggage to racing footrests and an LED ‘illumination kit’ for the fuel tank. KTM insists that the Indian-built bike’s build quality and reliability are up to its normal standards. Bikes for European markets are checked and dyno’d at Mattighofen before being delivered; those for Japan and other Asian markets go direct from Pune. Most of the launch bikes ran flawlessly but one was put out of action by an oil leak. Being produced in India is crucial to the 390 Duke because that’s what allows KTM to sell it for £4500, which seems a very competitive price. It’s stylish, capable and entertaining, whether you’re a novice or have been riding for years. KTM’s ‘Missing Link’ might not be big or powerful, but it could just be the discovery of the year.

WHEN I rode Honda’s naked CB500F and sportier CBR500R for the first time back in February, I felt as if Honda had a genuine, affordable middleweight success story on its hands. And if initial sales are anything to go by, it has. In the first month alone, all F model stock (that’s 700 units), has been sold, with the R’s sales not far behind. Things look even rosier for the latest adventure styled X model, the last of the new 500’s family, as Honda is predicting this version to be the most successful of all. This prediction is partly because that’s what happened with the bigger 700s launched last year: the NC700X easily outsold the NC700S. Another big factor lies in potentially more ‘cross-switch’ appeal – existing car drivers contemplating an affordable two-wheeled option instead of an expensive second car; riders returning to the road after a time away; riders who just fancy a smaller, more economical bike than what they’re currently riding plus new riders too. Honda UK is initially bringing in around 400 CB500Xs throughout May and June, so it will be interesting to see how quickly they sell.

What’s new?

The X shares exactly the same, newly developed 471cc, water-cooled parallel twin engine with its two siblings, which obviously keeps production and development costs down. Honda says 95% of all the 500s bikes’ parts are made or sourced in Thailand, where the 500s are built, and it’s the first time the Honda Thai factory – with its 47 years’ worth of experience – has produced a multi-cylinder motor. And it’s done a very good job.

Honda has essentially reverse engineered things: it started with the new 35kW A2 licence requirement and worked backwards from there, which is how it ended up with the 471cc ‘optimum’ capacity. For those of you who didn’t read the F and R review in our April issue, the motor shares the same grooved pistons and roller rocker arm with the CBR600RR (to reduce frictional losses), as well as having an identical 67mm bore size and 7mm bore interval. The compact crankcase was achieved by using a CBR600RR inspired ‘triangle’ of crank, main shaft and countershaft, plus pumping losses that can occur with a 180° phased firing order have been reduced. Other neat touches include a primary couple-balancer that sits behind the cylinders to reduce vibration; four frame hangers on each side instead of the usual three make the motor a strongly stressed member of the chassis plus a compact water pump provides better cooling. But what is a first for Honda (and quite obvious when you think about it) is the airbox ‘anti-turbulence’ guide plate, which cleverly separates the airflow and distributes it evenly to each cylinder. All three 500s have the same 35mm diamond steel frame, running gear and dash. However, the X now gets singled out for special attention, as it starts by getting a manually adjustable (by 40mm) screen, which the other bikes don’t have, a 10mm longer wheelbase (1420mm instead of 1410mm), and a 25mm higher seat than its siblings to (810mm compared to 785mm). It also gets an expected higher 170mm ground clearance (the R is 30mm lower while the F is 15mm lower).

In the weight stakes, at 196kg claimed kerb weight the X is two kilos heavier than the CBR-R and four kilos heavier than the CB-F, but to be brutally honest, you can’t tell the difference in isolation. The X also gets 1.6 litres more capacity, thanks to a larger 17.3 litre tank, which Honda says is good for over a 290 mile range. Looks wise, it’s hard to escape the fact the CB500X looks virtually identical to its much bigger Crosstourer brother – the ‘mini me’ styling was deliberate, but no bad thing as it makes the X look beefier than its 471cc suggests. It joins the NC700X, plus the Crosstourer and

Crossrunner, in the adventure sport family, and to cement that feeling, the X also gets the same Pirelli Scorpion Trail boots as the bigger Cross machines too. And for the eagle eyed among you, you’ll notice the motor has been ‘silvered’ to match the CRF off-road range of bikes, to give the X a more subtle adventure feel.

What’s it like to ride?

If I had to choose three words on the spot for how the X feels to ride they’d be: natural, easy-going and nimble. The wide, higher-set handlebars and the longer-legged suspension let you sling the X comfortably into the undulating Catalonian roads, and you don’t need to be afraid to push it either, as the X soaks up everything well on standard settings. If you’re not used to how slightly longer travel suspension works, it can feel a little unsettling as it dives under heavy braking, but it doesn’t take long to become accustomed to. I actually like this pitch and yaw road going adventure bikes have; I feel as if I have more connection with the corner, although some feel it’s too vague. The more upright riding position is the most relaxed out of the three 500s, and the X’s overall larger dimensions make it a viable proposition for taller, larger riders, while the reasonable 810mm seat height still makes the bike accessible to shorter riders too. Glancing at the amber coloured dash – the R gets a red hue and the F blue – it would still be nice to have a gear indicator, but to be fair, through a 20 minute set of camber heaving twisties, leaving the pliable motor in third, it bend swung admirably, so not much call for knowing which gear to be in in that scenario. Sometimes it would’ve benefited from knocking down a gear powering out of the tighter bends but

the incredibly smooth motor just put up and shut up very well without too much judder or clutch slipping needed. The parallel twin motor is happiest between 3500 and 5000rpm, delivering that nice mid-torque bulge that’s just so easy yet rewarding to ride – it’s got unflappable, linear delivery, with a slick, clean six-speed box, again with no chance of a false neutral. Top speed is the same as the other 500s – around 115mph – but the taller screen makes higher speeds much more comfortable. The X also has one degree more rake and 6mm more trail than its siblings, which translates to assured, neutral handling – out of the three, the X definitely achieves the neat trick of feeling the most substantial too, but slim at the same time. The standard ABS stoppers feel progressive yet plenty sharp enough, and being seated a bit higher improves visibility, which is a bonus in traffic. Accessories on offer include a sensible 35 litre top box, panniers, a touring screen, auxiliary lights, heated grips and handguards. In short, the X really delivers an affordable adventure experience, without feeling strained or too tryhard, for a complete cross-section of riders. And when I say affordable, the X comes in at under five big ones – £4950 – the same as the CBR500R. Honda UK has a four to five month ordering time on bikes – I’d be surprised if more Xs aren’t needed before June is out.

CRF250M £4099 While out in Spain we also got to quickly try out the supermoto version of the popular dual-purpose CRF250L launched last year, the CRF250M. Utilising the same liquid-cooled, dohc single cylinder motor as the F, the M sits 20mm lower due to revised all-round suspension with heavier weight springs, and gets an uprated larger 296mm floating front disc, plus 17 inch wheels with wider profile road tyres, in this case IRC Road Winners. Putting the M through its paces around a tight and twisty go-kart track was great fun – the 22.8bhp motor revs well and the taller gearing (39T rear sprocket) compared with the F was welcome down the back straight.

As you’d expect, you could flickflack easily through the tight corners, and riding the bike SM style (foot out, weight to the outside of the seat), was the best way to exploit the nimble handling. The claimed 145kg kerb weight also made it easy to manhandle, and even though the seat is relatively tall at 855mm, due to the bike’s slimness and the amount the suspension compresses when you climb aboard, it’s not a deal breaker for shorter riders. For everyday use, the 7.7 litre fuel tank should be good for 150 miles (claims Honda), and that revised gearing should make the M better at higher speeds. The sidestand has also been shortened due to the M sitting lower than the F; this may seem a tiny thing but nothing is more annoying (and potentially drop embarrassing) than a too-long stand. The 250M adds another A2 licence friendly bike to Honda’s range and is available in red and a John Player black/gold look too.

After reading your article on the Yamaha YBR125 in a recent issue of MCM, I went to have a look at one in the Bike Shop, Faversham, Kent. Scared of heights Dear MCM

After reading David Oakes’ letter about struggling with bikes because of his lack of height, I thought that I’d write in with hopefully a few helpful options. I too am somewhat vertically challenged, standing at a massive 5ft 6in, but it has never stopped me owning bigger bikes – my current one is a Kawasaki ZZR1400. It’s a large machine to handle at a standstill, so what

I’ve done to help is cut a little out of the width of the seat (this certainly doesn’t make it uncomfortable as I have toured abroad numerous times), plus bought some Daytona M-Star (I think) boots. These are secretly built up inside to give a extra inch of height to the wearer. I have also added an Öhlins shock to the rear, which gives far more adjustability than the standard unit. I understand this is a very expensive mod but other aftermarket shock

absorbers are available at a cheaper rate (no pun intended!). I can now touch the floor virtually flat footed on both sides of the bike, so all these mods have boosted my confidence no end, which is very important because I ride with a pillion 100% of the time and have panniers and a top box when touring. Also try a visit to a suspension specialist, as they will be able to provide advice and a custom service such as lowering the bike. David Reed

Tools you’ll need: Can of maintenance spray (e.g. GT85), lithium grease, cable luber, possibly 8-12mm open-ended spanners, no.2 Phillips screwdriver/ Allen keys (to take throttle housing apart), plus ratchet and 8-12mm sockets.

1 3: Clamp your cable luber around each cable and spray maintenance spray to lube the inside of the cable. Repeat for second cable and lubricate twistgrip. There’s no need to remove the whole of the twistgrip; just spray lube onto the handlebar and rotate twistgrip around in order to spread the lube about.

1: Identify cable adjuster – this can either be a nut type (where you’ll need to use spanners), or a plastic adjuster that can be adjusted by hand without tools. The adjuster is normally located in the first few inches of cable near the twistgrip. Undo adjuster and set cable to slackest point – this will make it easier when removing cables from twistgrip.

2: Undo throttle housing and remove from handlebar. Remove throttle cable from twistgrip, noting which cable locates in which hole: if in doubt, use your smartphone or normal camera to take pictures.

4: Reassembly: place a smear of grease on the end of each nipple and place back into twistgrip, noting which cable goes into which hole. Refit throttle housing – note that the housing usually has a dowel that will locate into the hole in handlebar. 5: With throttle housing reassembled, open the throttle to ensure it returns well (with a quick snap) and cable moves freely.

4: Use your cable luber to lube cable as you did with the throttle cable. Then clean and lubricate the lever – lube both sides and use a dab of grease where the lever mounts.

2: Remove lever-mounting bolt by undoing nut underneath the bar first, then the one on top.

5: Refit cable to lever and fit cable and lever back into clutch perch. Remember to lube the bolt as this acts as a pivot. Refit top nut bolt, tightening up lightly, and then bottom one lightly, and then do both up tightly.

■ When refitting clutch lever, be aware that some clutch switches (under bar) have a long stalk and can be snapped or damaged when refitting the lever. ■ If you can see other end of cable, spray lube until it runs clear out of the bottom of the cable (so it’s clean). ■ Adjustments: for the clutch cable, a good rule of thumb is 2-3mm free play (movement that does not disengage clutch) between the clutch lever and clutch lever mount. ■ Adjustments for the throttle cable: as little free play as you can get away with; this makes the throttle more responsive and the bike nicer to ride. Move adjuster so there is zero free play in the twistgrip, but not too tight so that throttle does not spring closed on its own. ■ Repeat throttle-closing check on full left and right lock as turning the bars can affect cable tension.

That’s an obvious standpoint in the edgy world of hyper-performance sports bike tyres, but it applies equally in the world of sports tourers. You can always do with a bit more grip and a little more service life. And this is what the new Angel GT is here to do. Four years since the launch of the world record-breaking Angel ST, tyre tech has moved on – now you can improve the ST’s performance as well as providing even more longevity, and the result is the latest GT tyre. Now, the reason you see the aircraft carrier here, apparently, is because

Pirelli wanted to demonstrate just how improved the wet weather performance is with the new tyre. On the exact same patch of deck as Lockheed F35-B combat jets slam to a halt we were pinning the front Pirelli GT on a Kawasaki Z1000ST. In Pirelli’s own tests, from 75kph the Angel GTs pulled up a whole metre shorter than any competitor – yeah, it might have looked like we were doing something extreme, but we were as safe as houses.

embraces both performance and endurance, so while the GT is fitted as OE on the Ducati Multistrada 1200, it’s suitable for anything from ultra-sports to urban commuter. That’s one hell of a spread, so accordingly we tried the tyre on a four-bike range, starting with the Yamaha R1 (many hyper-sports owners fit these tyres for winter riding), and finishing at the BMW F800R, taking in the Yamaha FJR1300 and BMW R1200R in between.

Who wants the Angel GT?

What’s the tech?

Curiously, almost all of us. It’s a tyre that’s focused on sports touring, or Gran Turismo as the Italians cared to phrase it. Pirelli says this sector

Pirelli’s goal was to take the existing Angel ST and from that develop the absolute reference for the market segment in terms of mileage and performance in wet or dry. To do this the team applied new thinking to the tread, the profile and the compound. Tread: The tread pattern is new, following – get this – “the theory of Schallamach wear waves”. It’s all about a study of the wear crests formed by the amount and direction of the forces created between tyre and road. Optimising the tyre to this theory Pirelli was able to reduce the grooves by 10% in the front tyre and 16% in the rear. More contact area makes for more grip and less wear. Profile: Pirelli has increased the radius at the crown of the rear tyre by 35% making for a contact patch that’s 6% shorter and 15% wider (than the ST). This apparently makes for less overheating, less sliding and therefore

less wear, as well as creating a more linear variation in the footprint as the tyre rolls to full lean, for a more progressive feel. Compound: A new rayon carcass has 32% more linear density and 60% higher rigidity (compared with the ST) improving the damping afforded by the tyre. There’s now a dual blend compound with “cap and base technology”, where the base layer offers stability while the cap is all about grip. That centre strip of the rear tyre is a mix of over 50% silica with added carbon black and resins for stability, resistance to abrasion and grip. The shoulders of the tyre are 100% silica for best grip, wet or dry. The front tyre is the same 100% silica compound all over to match the rear. Result: A tyre that offers 30% more mileage than the Angel GT – good for 14,000km says Pirelli – and is, it claims, the new reference for wet grip.

The test

After the performance on the aircraft carrier (the Italian flagship Cavour if you want to Google it) we decamped to Nardò, Porsche’s proving ground located in the heel of the boot that is Italy. Nardò has a very handy 6.2km handling track with plenty of camber and elevation changes as well as a 1km straight. The Angel GTs performed as you’d hope – all but flawlessly. Grip, especially at full lean, is considerable

but just as importantly the handling characteristic is as you’d want from a sports touring tyre – consistent and reassuring. It’s no race tyre, you can tell by the steady-away turn-in, but it’s not designed to be. Along the flat-out straight, on the R1 or FJR – on any bike – stability was rock solid, and equally at the top speed left sweep at the end of that straight, again we’re talking maximum confidence and no ill manners. Across a cross-section of bike and tyre sizes the performance was consistent: clearly Pirelli has made sure this tyre works at optimum performance for all.

The verdict

The STs were already good, but they need the new wet-weather tech to stay competitive. The new GTs appear to be a match for the Metzeler Z8s, which puts them potentially equal top of the class.

IT’S no surprise that Triumph has acted quickly to add a second model to its large capacity adventure bike range. The Tiger Explorer has been a success since its launch a year ago, the 4500 sales putting the tall triple fourth in Triumph’s best seller list ahead of familiar favourites including the Speed Triple, and ahead of rivals including Honda’s Crosstourer and Yamaha’s Super Ténéré. Triumph’s research showed that 44% of Explorer owners took their bikes offroad at times. So a more dirt-friendly update made sense, especially with the adventure bike market hotting up with the arrival of the revamped BMW R1200GS and KTM 1190 Adventure.

Triumph’s Explorer XC loves Tarmac and the rougher stuff too

Not that the XC – those initials stand for Cross Country – is an all-new creation like those two twins. It’s essentially the familiar Explorer fitted with wire-spoked instead of cast wheels, plus a bunch of dirt-friendly parts from Triumph’s accessories list. That means that the 1215cc, dohc 12-valve triple engine remains untouched, along with its shaft final drive system. The tubular steel frame, single-side aluminium swingarm and suspension are also retained. The wire wheels, which have the same 19in front, 17in rear diameters as the standard model’s cast ones, are arguably the most important part of the XC package. Wire wheels are tougher than cast; the spokes’ flexibility means you’re more likely to be able to keep riding if a rim is damaged by a rock or pothole. As you’d expect, the Triumph’s rims can take tubeless tyres, allowing puncture repair with a plug rather than having to remove the tyre or replace a tube. Two other XC features make the bike less prone to damage off-road. The tubular steel crash-bars were designed at the same time as the bike, so locate on strengthened parts of the engine.

Yamaha XT1200Z Super Ténéré £11,999 Of all the big adventure bikes it’s perhaps Yamaha’s parallel twin that comes closest to matching the XC’s blend of touring bias with an off-road slant. Its 1199cc, shaft-drive engine makes 108bhp so can’t match the Triumph triple’s top-end power, but is very grunty. And the Yam’s steel-framed chassis is not particularly high-tech, but gives good road-going handling and is robust enough to handle off-road abuse. Worldcrosser and Touring versions give plenty of chance to upgrade it, too. The bash-plate, made from heavy-duty marine grade aluminium, provides protection from rocks thrown up by the front wheel, and when bottoming the suspension. The XC follows BMW’s GS Adventure by mounting a pair of spotlights for some extra illumination. It also gets the accessory hand-guards, which provide useful wind protection during normal road use, as well as keeping off stones and branches off-road. The launch bikes were also fitted with heated grips, which aren’t standard with the XC.

What’s it like to ride?

I hadn’t ridden an Explorer since that launch last year but felt immediately at home on the XC here in Scotland. It’s a tall bike, especially with the easily adjustable seat in its higher position. At 267kg wet (8kg up on the standard model) it’s pretty heavy, too. But the combination of ultra-flexible, 135bhp engine, smooth power delivery and light handling made it very easy to ride. Throttle response is less sharp than on the original Explorer (an update introduced with the Trophy late last year), and it’s a distinct improvement. The big triple pulled superbly strongly, accelerating without complaint from below 2000rpm. That meant it was possible to stay in top even when trickling through villages at 30mph, then accelerate almost as though riding an automatic when back on the open road. Slowing down was rarely necessary because Scotland is pleasingly large and thinly populated. The route took us on the spectacular A93, Britain’s highest public road, a winding ribbon of Tarmac that snakes up to the Glenshee ski resort. With snow at the roadside I was glad of the protection of the Explorer’s unchanged screen, which can be adjusted through five positions after undoing a couple of wingnuts. It’s not as quick a system as that of the latest GS or Ducati Multistrada, which can be adjusted on the move, but took less than a minute without getting off the bike. From Glenshee it was a short run to a coffee stop at Balmoral Castle, then 60 or so miles down to the almost as grand Alvie House. The estate is crossed by dirt tracks that were perfect for putting the XC through its paces off-road. The tall triple impressed, too, on the sort of challenging terrain where the standard Explorer would probably have coped, but where a tougher version was definitely preferable.

XC feels better off-road than standard Explorer

The XC’s size and weight didn’t help when I was trying to turn it round in a narrow, deeply rutted track. But the suspension (which has a lengthy 190mm front and 194mm rear travel) did a good job of soaking up the bumps and potholes while still keeping control. The option of electronic suspension adjustment would be a bonus, but the Triumph did a decent job without so much as a tweak of the KYB (formerly Kayaba) shock’s remote preload adjuster. The XC’s bash-plate came in handy a couple of times when I went over a jump with enough force to ground the engine with a loud ‘clonk’. I was glad of the wire wheels when hitting some rocks and potholes hard, too. Ironically one French rider had already been forced to stop when a flying stone holed his radiator. Perhaps the rad guard from Triumph’s accessory list should also be standard fitment on the XC. For off-road riding I turned off the ABS, as although it works well enough on Tarmac, it can’t match the latest systems on dirt. I also went through the menu to

put the traction control on its off-road setting, which allows more slip. The Metzeler Tourance tyres, excellent on the road, were also very good on dirt given that they’re far from knobblies. Even so, with the TC in the road setting the Triumph often felt as though it had lost all power, as the rear Tourance struggled for grip and the system cut in to kill the drive. The Explorer could do with joining the GS etc. in having an offroad riding mode that adjusts both ABS and TC at the press of a button. Back on Tarmac after lunch, we headed north-west to Inverness, then cut back south-west along the bank of Loch Ness to the overnight stop. Rain had returned by the time we arrived, but the Triumph had swallowed the day’s ride, averaging 45mpg at a decent pace, and covering nearly 200 miles on a 20 litre tankful, without a hint of discomfort thanks to the roomy riding position and broad, comfortable two-piece seat. Next day came some of the best roads of the trip, as the A82 carved eastwards through the awe-inspiring valley of Glen Coe. For a big bike with lots of

suspension travel the Triumph really does handle well, its wide bars giving enough leverage to make the steering improbably light yet accurate. As we plunged down towards the Bridge of Orchy it was difficult to decide whether to slow down and admire the freshly snow-covered Grampians up ahead, or ride faster and enjoy the XC’s stability when slicing through the smoothly surfaced curves. The XC was happy either way: flexible, long-legged and comfortable at a lazy tourist-coach pace, yet equally at home revving towards the redline and using the full force of four-piston Nissin front calipers. After that memorable stretch of road the last section was almost an anticlimax, as we rolled into damp Dunblane to end a trip that had shown the XC to be impressively fast, comfortable, tough and versatile. Whether it’s good value compared with upgrading the standard Explorer is another matter. The standard triple is now available with wire wheels for an extra £300, so you could create a bike to identical spec (apart from the unique-toXC green paintwork) by adding the relevant accessories. There is a small cost saving with the XC, whose price of £12,189 means you’d save about £100 over the £11,199 standard Explorer by the time you’d paid for a few hours’ labour to fit the accessories. The XC’s arrival shows that Triumph has answered the demand for a big adventure bike with more offroad ability, and confirms that the triple is more than capable of getting its boots muddy.

Traditionally, women riding motorcycles solo in India was a rare sight. Until now. MCM speaks to the ladies blazing a biking trail from Mumbai to Ladakh

INDIA has a place in the heart of many a British biker. As journey’s end of the classic ‘hippy trail’ route it’s been welcoming overland riders for decades, and of course the AngloIndian connection with the venerable Royal Enfield is a well-documented chapter of motorcycling history. After China the country is the second-largest motorcycle market in the world, and has a vast and varied biking culture, but until recently this has been largely the preserve of male riders. However, with the social and economic changes that have been sweeping India in the last few years, there has been a huge rise in women taking to two wheels, and not just as the daily commute. They’re racing, rallying and record-breaking all over the subcontinent. While female riders are on the increase in many Western countries (they account for the majority of new riders in the US), in more conservative cultures such as India’s, the leap required for a woman to make the decision to ride a motorcycle can be a considerable challenge when faced with the traditional values of family and society. There was a time when Royal Enfield’s ‘sari guard’, a metal grill over the back wheel to protect a passenger’s sari, was the best-selling women’s motorcycling accessory, but times are changing. Nicolitta Pereira, who works sourcing apparel in the international garment industry, has been riding motorcycles since she was a teenager and welcomes the change in attitudes to today’s female riders. “Nowadays, women motorcyclists are much more accepted compared with 25 years ago when I started riding,” she said. “At that time I faced negative reactions only. www.motorcyclemonthly.co.uk directed to me were, ‘women are not supposed to ride, their place is in the kitchen’, ‘you look cheap’ and ‘the bike is heavy, you will not be able to ride it.’ “People would say ‘maybe you can ride the bike but you will never be able to kick-start it or put it on the main stand’. So I would silence them by doing just that and riding off alone. They assumed I was with someone who would start the bike for me. People on the road would stare and pass comments, so I learnt to tuck my hair into the helmet and wore a jacket so I wouldn’t be recognised as a woman. “But over time, negative reactions have changed to awe and then encouragement and acknowledgement. Today, heads still turn on the road, but it’s not as dramatic.” Defying convention, Nicolitta has ridden all over India, making many

long and challenging journeys including a 5000 mile journey from Mumbai to Ladakh and back. But she is best known as the only female rider in the film One Crazy Ride, made by Indian film-maker Gaurav Jani, which follows five members of India’s 60kph Club exploring an uncharted route in the Himalayas, a ride of incredibly tough terrain and riding conditions. Unsurprisingly, a number of women’s motorcycle groups have cropped up across India in the last couple of years, including the Hop-on Gurls, an enthusiastic group of Enfield Bullet riders in Bangalore, and the Regals, a club for lady Royal Enfield riders who declare themselves “the queens of Mumbai, igniting the roads with our royal rides!” The best known of India’s women’s bike clubs is The Bikerni, and if you’re wondering about the name, it’s a play on Hindi grammar, where ‘ni’ is added to make a noun feminine. “We wanted an Indian sounding name,” explained co-founder Urvashi Patole. The Bikerni is largely responsible for kick-starting the women’s motorcycling movement in India and was founded in 2011 by Urvashi and Firdaus Shaikh, two motorcycling friends from Pune, a city 100 miles south-east of Mumbai (and incidentally where KTM builds its 125, 200 and 390 Dukes). “Our aim was to share our passion and empower other women through motorcycling.” They have certainly achieved their goal. The Bikerni is the first and largest all-female motorcycle association and the only one with a pan-Indian presence. It has more than 200 members from Delhi to Chennai, and each local group hosts rides and events from long-distance trips to technical workshops and campaigning rides for causes close to their heart.

The Bikerni hit the headlines earlier this year when members entered the Limca Book of Records (the Indian equivalent of the Guinness Book of Records) for being ‘The First and Largest All-Women Motorcycle Expedition to Khardunga-La’, the highest motorable road in the world. Ten members of the Bikerni rode 1300km from Delhi, across the Himalayas, tackling river crossings, sub-zero temperatures, snow and ice to reach the pass, which is 5359m above sea level. One of the riders on the expedition was 28-year-old Chithra Priya, a motorcycle racer from Chennai. Like many Indian girls, Chithra was used to riding small scooters and mopeds to get around locally but luckily for her, she had two encouraging brothers who suggested she try riding a geared motorcycle and were keen to teach her the basics. She never looked back. ❱

22 RIDING FOCUS India: the rise of the female biking clubs Chithra has since become a well-known figure in Indian motorcycling; she took pole position at her first drag race in 2005, and came first again at the BP Speed Run in Mumbai. She then started circuit racing at the Madras Motor Sports Club tracks at Irungattukottai. Suddenly, motorcycling had changed from a hobby to a profession.

She then trained at the California Super Bike School when it came to India, which resulted in an opportunity for her to travel to America as a cultural ambassador. Fortunately, Chithra has supportive parents and her mother even accompanies her when she scouts out potential race routes. But she understands that it is not always so easy for female riders in India, although, she says, attitudes are changing rapidly. “When I got started people used to stare at me, but now people congratulate me, or give a thumbs-up. Most of the time they are inspired to see a woman ride, especially women from a conservative society. “People see us as rebellious and groundbreaking. They take a look and appreciate us riding the bike and wish us luck, and tell us stories of how much they wanted to ride too when they were young.”

Chithra’s reputation as a pioneer continues with her recent entry into the Saddlesore Hall of Fame, the only Indian woman to have achieved this honour. The Saddlesore is a part of the famous Iron Butt event, where solo endurance riders from all over the world ride 1000 miles in 24 hours flat. “The last 300 miles were the hardest,” she said. She was freezing cold, her eyes watering, her body swelling up and her jacket full of insects. But she made it in 23 hours and 40 minutes… and then spent the next three days in bed. Far from being put off by this experience, Chithra has plans for plenty more adventures. Her future motorcycling goals include the Road of Bones in Siberia, to “test her offroad skills”, and a ride to Peru’s fabled Inca city Macchu Picchu. She predicts a great future for women motorcyclists in India. “The motorcycling industry in India is rapidly growing,” she said, “and most of the companies have started to introduce bikes with women riders in mind.” The most notable of these is Ducati, which has launched its Monster 795 (chassis of a 696 with the engine of 796), marketed squarely at the booming female market. With increasing employment opportunities and equality for women, motorcycle sales to female riders have increased by 40% and it seems that other manufacturers are keen to cash in, with Honda India and Yamaha India both seeing an increase in sales, especially in the under-30s. Nicolitta Pereira agrees that the future is bright for the female Indian rider. “I’m happy to say that companies are finally employing women now and the overall mindset is changing. Indian

women have come a long way and have a long way to go. But we are moving ahead quickly and with great enthusiasm,” she said. “There are women touring, racing, testing bikes, repairing bikes and using bikes for the daily city commute. However, while there are more opportunities, women still have to overcome many hurdles to chase their dreams.” Fortunately, with trailblazers such as ‘Nicky’ and Chithra, and groups like The Bikerni, the female riders of India are off to a flying start.

I

n line with the changes to UK motorcycle riding legislation, which came into force in January, MCM’s sister title, Twist & Go magazine (T&G), has been relaunched as a more commuter-focused publication.

T&G now covers anything on two wheels (and sometimes even more) that can be ridden on licences up to and including the new UK A2 motorcycle licence. T&G editor, Mau Spencer, is keen to stress that the magazine is not turning its back on the scooter world. “Scooters have always been the main, integral part of our content – and will remain to be so,” he said. “But our format change allows us to be more flexible about the type of coverage we can offer our readers – it’s an exciting development.” Under the new format, the former What Scooter section has now morphed into Which Bike.

The magazine now carries detailed and useful information on anything commuter-related (what to look for when buying, what to wear, riding advice and even top tips for surviving in an urban environment). In the first of a new series featuring the riding adventures of MCM readers, we join Chris Fleet and his friend Franklin riding across South America…on a pair of £600 bikes. Words & Photography: Chris Fleet

THE climb out of San Pedro was steep and unrelenting, leaving me unable to pull higher than second gear. It was difficult to comprehend we were now riding into the very mountains that had been looming over us for a whole week, dominating the skyline all around us. As we rose higher and higher snow began to appear at the side of the road and the thin air left our little bikes, and us, breathless. The riding so far had been relatively easy, aside from the treacherous wind on the Pan American highway. But now we were leaving the Atacama behind and entering the Andes. We had gone from 2400m above sea level in San Pedro to around 4300m before we turned off, leaving the asphalt to wind its lonely way to Argentina while we rumbled along sun-baked red dirt towards the Bolivian border, which consisted of a chicane and a shack with one fat, drunk official inside. It had been three weeks since we had flicked through the Chilean Auto Trader back in Santiago, finding our basic yet beloved bikes at £600 each, Franklin’s a sleek black Honda 125 and mine a metallic blue Suzuki GN125. ❱

Hailing from San Diego, California, Frank was a 23-year-old commercial diver who had caught a one-way flight to Argentina with no particular plan or agenda, waiting and hoping to see what the world had in store for him. It was on a Buenos Aires street while tucking into an ice cream that he casually agreed to join me, without fuss or waver, on what was to be the most epic adventure either of us had ever undertaken: 6000 miles from Santiago in Chile to Bogota, Colombia, through arid deserts,

mountain ranges, sticky jungles and insane cities. Now, two weeks in, we were finally leaving Chile and taking on a ride that I had heard about many times, the ‘Lagunas route’. It consisted of an indiscriminate and mostly unmapped dust track winding its way from the Bolivian border along the Altiplano plateaux to the world famous Uyuni salt flats. Normally the realm of the diehard 1000cc touring bikes, our 125s had their work cut out for them. We were now riding on a hardened mud surface that went from bad to worse then back to just being bad again, until finally we reached Laguna Verde, our first major landmark. The lagoon, as its name suggests, was a perfect green and beautifully reflected the volcanoes and mountains that towered around us from its utterly still surface. Skirting around its northern edge we followed what seemed the most prominent of many subtle tracks until it eventually took us to a dead end. So early on and we were already lost, our map seemed almost useless in such a mess of options. Tempers were close to being lost as we disagreed on

which way to go, Franklin favouring the ‘make your own track’ theory and me wanting to backtrack and search for more options. Our decision was made as a 4x4 rounded the corner just behind us, indicating the way. Following another steep climb, with the bikes gasping for air as much as we were, we stopped for a break and admired the astonishing scenic beauty that surrounded us. 360° of snow tipped mountain range rose up on every horizon, each peak kissing a spotless blue. Moments later a sudden roar of engines grew rapidly louder and three BMW R 1200 GSs trundled up to join us at our look-out point. It was great to meet fellow motorcycle travellers on this desolate road – their own journeys had taken them almost the entirety of the Pan American, and in relative terms, they were almost done. Their BMWs looked tough, and by all accounts made short work of the bumpy surface. But they colloquially admired the gallantry of our own plucky machines and were eager to swap advice on what lay ahead. We found our map was completely wrong in every sense of the word, but with a

few red-penned corrections from the GS boys we were back on the right track. They warned us of some wet weather ahead, and a few sketchy river crossings, before kindly donating some spare fuel to our cause, fuel they assured us they wouldn’t need. We headed for Laguna Colorada, where a tiny collection of bunkhouses that serviced the 4x4 tours could be found. And after a day’s rattling through the bumpy trail, with the sun almost disappearing behind snowy peaks, its rusty red waters appeared below us, filled with the tiny pink dots of wild flamingos grazing on the surface. The sandy banks of the lagoon proved difficult to traverse, violently throwing Frank from his bike on more than one occasion but always failing to break his seemingly unshakable reserve. As the sand turned to stone we arrived at the run-down buildings, and utilising some stellar charm and gentlemanly wit, we managed to wangle a bed for the night and even a hot meal. The next day on the Altiplano turned out to be my turn for a few spills. While retracing our steps around the lagoon

Ready salted... salt flats! to the main track, in almost exactly the same spot that Frank had come off, my own wheel dug into the sand, catapulting me off the bike and planting me face first into the ground. I immediately acted on my first impulse, and blocking out the pain I rushed back to lift my bike from the ground, which was now crying tears of precious petrol into the sand. I was unhurt, I soon figured out, as was the bike, but I continued throughout that entire day with a little extra caution.

A chilly morning turned into a warmer day time, and soon we would be above 5000m, not that we had any GPS to tell us so, or even a reliable map. It was the telltale ‘chug-chugchug’ of our bikes wheezing from the lack of oxygen that gave it away. At some points, even first gear failed to produce any power, leaving us no option but to take turns, one pushing and one riding to get the bikes up hill, after hill, after hill. Thankfully, as the afternoon rolled around, the flat plains of the plateaux appeared below us and equally thankfully, we once again dipped below 5000m. Yet just as we bid farewell to the mountains, the rivers greeted us in abundance. At first they were just shallow streams that required simple negotiation, but soon came the more sizable crossings requiring complicated plans of action

and calculated execution. One larger river blessed us with a small rickety bridge that, after jumping up and down on a few times, we decided was sturdy enough and tentatively inched our way across. The ultimate test, however, came less than a mile from where we intended to stop for the night. Both exhausted and hungry, we followed the trail as it led to a river, a river that looked ridiculously deep enough to swallow both our bikes and ourselves. We set to work searching for a safe crossing point off track, wading in under the bewildered gaze of the nearby flamingos. Frank eventually picked out a spot a little way from where we’d arrived and I lined up to go first. The plan was that one man should ride while the other ran behind pushing the bike, should disaster decide to strike and our back wheels bog in. And so, with a lengthy run-up I was in, carving my way through the soft river bed until my front wheel hit the opposite bank and I launched out of the water in a flurry of sprayed of mud and algae, and landed safely on the opposite bank, throwing in a few victory donuts for good measure. Frank followed suit and soon we were both safely across. The road that led north from there became far more flat and manageable, and we managed to break free of the difficult terrain that had kept us below 12mph. Both in high spirits, the town of Uyuni appeared on the horizon and we could almost taste that steak dinner we had each promised ourselves, way before our tyres even hit its Tarmac. As we hit the town centre, both caked

One thing we had missed along the route, and the reason most people stopped at Uyuni, was the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat; and at this time, the wet season, it was topped with a shallow layer of water that turned the flat into an enormous mirror. We left the bikes to rest and begrudgingly hopped on to a 4x4 tour of one of the most spectacular places in South America. In such stunning surroundings I began to miss my bike but at the same time was thankful that the little Suzuki didn’t have to endure yet more damaging terrain. The spectacular, almost alien-like surroundings were like something from the mind of Dali. Soon, we were weaving through Uyuni’s flooded and muddy streets, heading north once more. We knew nothing of the road ahead, and it wasn’t long before we were riding on more sun-baked patches of sand, filled with ridges that rattled the life out of us. I had noticed a nut from my rear suspension had shaken itself loose, so I replaced it with one I had to cannibalise from my kickstand. ❱


36 Touring / AdvenTure Riding through South America Unhappy with the tension of his chain, Frank decided to stop, and, without any clue between us, attempted to make adjustments. Problems inevitably arose shortly afterwards as the tight chain ripped the sprocket from its mounting and Frank’s Honda was crippled. It took us both over an hour of roadside bodging to get us back on the road. We limped on but with our shadows getting longer and storm clouds on the horizon we had no choice but to duck into the first town we came to. A night of unnecessarily loud and distorted music from carnival revellers preceded our early rise, and we set off as two grumpy men in the drizzling rain. The road was still a painfully ridged surface, except that now, with

the rain, parts of it had turned to sticky mud and made it hard to maintain control of our bikes. More river crossings appeared, most were easy but a few required some prior planning as before, to negotiate. However, one river truly stumped us. The track led directly into what could only be described as a torrent. It was easily 30 metres across with nothing but a railway bridge crossing it. And as Frank and I stood on the bridge, staring through the daunting space in the sleepers and considering some kind of Stand By Me / Great Escapetype move, a passing truck informed us of an alternate crossing point just downstream. Sure enough, some 300 metres down river, there it was. I assumed that in dry season it was a solid concrete pathway of sorts, but now, as we looked at it, it was simply a flooded dam with some markers sticking out on either side. Frank gallantly went first, uneasily wobbling his way to the other side, yet surviving all the same. This of course meant that I had to follow. By now we were cold, wet, tired and hungry, and as we continued the rain turned to hail and pinged off our helmets, each droplet becoming a tiny ambassador of pain to our exposed skin. The road was difficult enough to negotiate on its own, but with the added difficulty of the asteroid field we were apparently in, it eventually all proved too much for us and we sought shelter beside a farmhouse. Then, as if nature suddenly decided we’d taken enough, the hail stopped, the greyness lifted, and there it was, like some kind of angel before us... Tarmac! It felt great, and we engaged fifth gear for the first time in almost a week. Fifty miles of glorious asphalt took us to the outskirts of La Paz, the highest capital on earth.

Arriving at La Paz, the highest (and nearly most polluted) capital on earth Way up in the Andes, at over 3600m high, mountains surround La Paz, trapping pollution and making it one of the most polluted cities in the world. At such an altitude, with oxygen quite scarce, everything seemed to be an uphill struggle. Getting around on both the bikes and on foot was a challenge – even the locals often sat around chewing coca leaves to ease the effects of altitude sickness. However, just about everything could be bought at a rock bottom price, so in the days that followed both bikes went in for a full service, coming back gleaming and purring like kittens. The Andes had taken us higher than we had ever been before; they had tested our mettle and taught us a few lessons along the way. But it was soon time to ride west and descend into the sticky jungles of Eastern Peru in order to re-join the Pan-American Highway that would eventually lead us all the way to Colombia.

38 SECOND-HAND BIKE BUYING GUIDE Yamaha TDM900

This torquey and incredibly versatile all-rounder parallel twin is one of biking’s best kept secrets Words: Iggy Grainger/Mel Falconer Photography: Yamaha FETED (albeit a little unfairly) by many as a bit of an oddball with quirky looks, the Yamaha TDM900 is a genuinely good allrounder for pretty much most types of rider… if they’d try one. And owners seem to love them, always a good sign. Engine: The 987cc parallel twin engine puts out 85bhp and a very respectable 65lb-ft of allimportant torque. That torque gives the bike plenty of oomph for those fast overtakes and pulls cleanly from around 2000rpm. Gearing is quite high, which keep the revs low and it means sixth is almost like an overdrive at times. The crank is built with a 270º firing order to mimic the characteristics of a V-twin, and feels tractable and smooth, while the six-speed box is precise and clunk free. It’s punchy out of roundabouts and has really useable ‘real world’ power – great for commuting, twisties and motorways alike. Another plus is the tank range: many owners report on getting well over 200 miles from that 20 litre tank in varied riding conditions, which is not bad considering the type of bike it is. Handling: It handles respectably well (although uprated front fork internals are a common upgrade) and will provide a few thrills around your favourite scratching lanes. Fully adjustable suspension means you can fiddle around with it if you need to sort out any brake dive. The 18 inch front wheel is a bit of an odd size and can leave the front feeling a bit vague, but only until you get used to things. There’s more than a hint of supermotard feel to this bike, even if it looks more like a crazy mixed-up adventure bike. Brakes are stonking, as you’d expect seeing as they were originally fitted to the R1.

Ride: With an upright riding position, easy nature and 190kg manageable dry weight the TDM will suit many riders. It’s a pretty comfortable bike too, surprisingly good on long motorway hauls and although the seat height at 825mm can be a stretch for shorter riders, it is quite slim, which makes it much more accessible. It’s a bit of a stretch to the bars though and shorter riders have been known to fit bar risers to shorten the reach. The screen helps to keep the windblast at bay, and to make it properly touring friendly, there’s an official Yamaha touring screen and a few aftermarket choices available too.

Equipment: This is designed primarily as a street bike, so don’t expect too many extras as standard. There’s no centrestand fitted (a pain come lube time) and the headlight isn’t the most powerful either, but you do get a rear luggage carrier. There are a few extras to buy though, like luggage options (always handy to have, especially if they come fitted to a used bike). Add some heated grips and a tank bag and you can easily go touring on a TDM. Finish: Older Yamahas weren’t known for their finish but to be honest the TDM900 was better than most. That’s mainly down to the alloy frame (as opposed to steel) and stainless steel exhaust downpipes. Suspension linkages are the only real weak area, they’re made from mild steel and do rust. Some owners have reported flaky engine paint and the need to really clean the bike properly in winter months. Model history: The original TDM850 was launched way back in 1991 and was way ahead of its time... or strange looking. Quirky styling doesn’t always catch on in the UK though, so you don’t see too many around. The TDM900 arrived over a decade later in 2002, still with distinctive styling. ABS was added as an option to the TDM900A in 2005 and cost £500 more than the standard model. After 22 years the

TDM name still lives on and is part of the current Yamaha range, which says it all really. What to check: Some owners report snatchy or rather abrupt fuelling at low rpm, so town work can be a pain. It’s said to be cured by fitting a Power Commander, while other owners say it’s a glitch caused by the airbox flap (fitted as part of Euro 3 regs), which is easily cured. Three pros: Not likely to get nicked, exclusivity (not everybody has, or wants one), easy to get along with. Three cons: Styling isn’t to everyone’s taste, front forks bit soft as standard, needs to be looked after finish-wise. Value for money: Pick up a good clean used 2005 onwards TDM900A and you’re getting a great bike for not a lot of money, especially if you get a beefed up screen or luggage thrown in. The average TDM owner is likely to have looked after their bike well. Servicing/maintenance: If you’re a DIY kind of owner then you can buy a service kit for around £55. Expect to pay around £100 for an interim and £250 for a full service at a dealer. Insurance: Lexham Insurance quoted the following on a 2005 Yamaha TDM900: 25-year-old living in Derby, three years no claims TPF&T: £254.49 (£400 excess) Fully comp: £381.44 (£400 excess) 42-year-old living in London (three points for speeding, nine years no claims) TPF&T: £164.16 (£350 excess) Fully comp: £236.50 (£350 excess)

Givi tank bag with Tanklock system

The Italian bike luggage firm has created a new 3D range of bags that combine the solidity of a hard bag with the light weight of a soft one. The 3D601 thermo-formed tank bag is waterproof thanks to its EVA laminated fabric and waterproof zip. It has a four-litre volume capacity, and features inner pockets and handy integrated GPS holder and includes reflective areas for better visibility. Givi has also developed a Tanklock fixing system, which makes it easy to lock and release its range of bags. The system consists of a small metal ring fixed to the bottom of the bag, and another one on the base of the tank (attached with three screws), that allows quick release Price: £86.16 of the bag lock as well as adjustable five-level positioning. Most riders will agree that wearing earplugs is a must if you want to protect your hearing while riding, but don’t want to block all noise, as you still need to hear that police siren or car horn. Auritech has over 20 years experience of designing custom-fit hearing protectors, and has just launched some biker-specific, silicon-free earplugs. The plugs feature precision-tuned, patented ceramic filters that claim to protect ears from dangerous noise levels from the engine, wind and road, while still letting you hold a conversation and to hear sirens and horns with no muffled effect. It does this by forming the filters with a Venturi-shaped sound channel from high-grade ceramic material (zirconium oxide) at a very high temperature resulting in a completely smooth internal surface. Dainese 2013 kit collection

Italian bike clothing guru Dainese has launched some new clobber for this season. First up are the Crono P Estiva one and Crono Div two-piece leather suits. Both feature aluminum shoulder inserts, plus certified composite and pro-shape soft protection. The perforated one-piece version also has a fetching ‘spoiler’, while the two-piece is also available in ladies’ sizes. Heading up the leather sports jackets is the Super Speed Pelle. This beauty gets microelastic inserts, Dainese’s exclusive D-Skin fabric, S1 fabric and bidirectional elastic for easier movement. Lomo Drybag Daysack Here’s something a bit different – Lomo Watersport has launched a new bag aimed at keeping motorcyclists safe and seen. Motor sport legend John Surtees OBE, the only person to have won world championships on both two and four wheels, will be supporting the Edenbridge Fun Day this year. The event, held in Surtees’ home town, will celebrate his achievements on two and four wheels. The special event will feature static displays and a parade of rarely seen race cars and bikes as well as veteran and classic vehicles along Edenbridge High Street. Some of the vehicles on show include a TS7 Formula 1 car, which Surtees raced at the British GP in 1970, with him driving it once again at the head of the parade. Other ones include the TS14 Formula 1 car Mike Hailwood drove to second place in the 1972 Italian GP, a 1960 MV Agusta four-cylinder GP bike and a 1954 BMW Rennsport twin-cylinder motorcycle – Surtees raced for the factory team at the Nurburgring in 1955. The event will raise awareness and funds for the Henry Surtees Foundation, which was established by John Surtees following the tragic death of his son Henry while competing in a Formula 2 race in 2009 aged just 18.
