Congratulations to Mercedes-Benz apprentices

Mercedes-Benz Owners (MBO) news. Following a recent change in ownership in March 2018. The MBO has now been taken over by long standing employee and former Business Development Manager, Mark Sykes AKA “mark.s” on the Forum. Mark is a Mercedes enthusiast and has working in publishing and sale most of his life, with the last 20 years dedicated to the Mercedes-Benz Owners and its associated products and services. He is keen to develop closer links with main dealerships, independent Mercedes specialists and provide closer links to its subscribers whilst providing increased benefits and offers. Mark and his team are looking forward to the new challenge ahead.

Over 100 apprentices from Sytner Mercedes-Benz took part in their annual Apprenticeship Celebration ceremony held at the Double Tree Hilton, Milton Keynes earlier this year. Travelling from all our thirteen dealerships and many braving snowy conditions in the North East, they attended with their Heads of Business and family members to enjoy a business conference, meal and graduation ceremony. Twenty six of the apprentices graduated and they are looking forward to continuing their careers with Sytner. An expect 31 further apprentices are expected to graduate next year. Congratulations to you all.

Mercedes-AMG with ambitious goals and a strong line-up for Nürburgring 24 Hours Mercedes-AMG Motorsport is full of ambition for the 46th running of the ADAC Zurich 24h-Rennen: after its victories in 2013 and 2016, the performance brand from Affalterbach again aims at a podium finish this year. With their high-quality line-ups, the Mercedes-AMG Performance Teams BLACK FALCON and HTP Motorsport rank among the favourites at the Nürburgring. The campaigns by the Customer Racing Teams also convince with high quality. In total, the plan is for seven Mercedes-AMG GT3s to compete. Nick Day from Chris Knott Insurance (MBO Insurance), who has been one of our recommended insurance partners for nearly 30 years, comments on the latest news to come across his desk… Lately, I have been hearing that drivers (true car enthusiasts in particular) are starting to ask questions about who the eventual insurer is when they receive quotes for car insurance. One doesn’t have to look too far for a possible reason - there are increasing reports of offshore players either pulling out of the UK market or going into administration leaving policyholders high and dry. Within the last 2 years we’ve seen 4 such providers exit the market in this way. These providers are frequently the ones coming up first on the comparison site results (you know - the ones that are quite well below the next price from a name you have heard of) because they benefit from cost-savings and tax efficiency by being outside the UK. It is impossible to assess an offshore provider’s financial ability to meet claims as they have no financial rating. It is difficult to determine their financial strength, stability and security. What’s more, they sit outside of UK regulation so policyholders don’t have the same protections as they would if a company in any EU Member state ceased trading. When Enterprise Insurance collapsed in October 2016 the Financial Services Compensation Scheme stepped in, paying over £26m in compensation to more than 30,000 policyholders. The consequence is that UK regulated insurers and brokers foot the bill for that scheme through an annual industry levy which is ultimately reflected in your car insurance premium. At MBO Insurance we’ve never entertained using anything other than good quality, established and recognised UK insurers on our panel. I understand that drivers are often looking for the cheapest price, but that can be with scant regard to what it is they’re getting in return. It’s a gamble isn’t it – will I need to claim this year? Does this standout low price override my caution in using this insurer I’ve never heard of? Don’t get me wrong, it’s not sour grapes on our part – we set our stall out differently. Our firm belief, and it’s echoed by our insurer partners, is that quality and security are as important as price to club members who lavish greater care and attention on their cars.

300 D Saloon The Former Presidential Car

he Mercedes-Benz W186 model 300 was a high-end luxury car produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1951 and 1957. The company's largest and most prestigious automobile, elegant, powerful, exclusive, and expensive. Also referred to as a "Type 300", the W186 was equal in features and price but superior in performance to the rival RollsRoyce Silver Cloud. Favoured by statesmen and business leaders, it offered options such as a glass partition and VHF mobile telephone. All but hand-built as the company flagship, the W189 is often identified as an Adenauer after Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, was a lengthened version of the earlier 300 models, and it was designed to be an executive's limousine that would compete head to head with Rolls-Royce. Among the custom features in these "parade cars" were writing desks, sirens, curtains, dividing partitions, sunroofs, and half-roof "landaulet" configurations. Three versions were produced in succession, known informally as the 300A (or simply 300), 300B, and 300C. An enlarged "300D" variant built on the W189 chassis succeeded it in late 1957. It featured sweeping changes that included revised bodywork and a fuel injection engine. The 300D was fitted with an improved version of its 3.0 L (2996 cc/182 in³) overhead cam, aluminium head straight-6 engine. Bosch mechanical direct injection and an innovative diagonal head-toblock joint that allowed for oversized intake and

exhaust valves produced 180 PS at 5500 rpm. A 3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission was standard. A total of 3,077 300D models (priced at DM 27,000) were produced through March 1962. The 300d was unparalleled in its time for comfort, as it had a vast interior that was swathed in a log cabin's worth of hardwood and a herd of thick leather hides, with enough legroom for even the tallest passenger to achieve comfort.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 D Saloon offered here is a “historical car”. Ordered in 1958 by the Somoza Government of the Country of Nicaragua with some special equipment including high torque engine, telephone, parade light, siren, flag holder hood ornament and “Polar-Matic” air conditioning. On March 2, 1958, the automobile was shipped to Nicaragua on the ship S.S. Hein Hoyer owned by Hanseatic Vaase Line. In 1979 the car arrived in California, USA. Since that time, the car passed through to some unknown owners before joining a private collection in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2013 the car was shipped to Germany for professional restoration. The W189 has never

been fully taken apart mechanically, because it has never required it. The interior woodwork and the chrome on the inside and out have both been well kept, whilst the upholstery, headliner, and carpets were all redone to a very fine standard. The chassis pans were replaced and parts of the main frame were repaired or replaced, the transmission re-sealed, water pump replaced, brake system overhauled. The car was sent back to Phoenix at the end of 2013. “Significant world event car”. A historical treasure that belongs in a world-class Mercedes collection. Some of the special features include: high torque engine, telephone, parade light, siren, flag holder hood ornament and “PolarMatic” air-conditioning. All of the documentation seems to show that this was owned Nicaragua's first family. From 1936 to 1979, the Somozas had ruled Nicaragua and accumulated personal

assets totaling $400 million. From an official Daimler-Benz letter it appears that Luis Somoza officially ordered this Mercedes on September 14, 1957. Mr. Somoza communicated to DaimlerBenz Aktiengesellschaft that this limousine was to have special equipment. Chassis number 7500143 was built with a high torque fuelinjected engine, double acting telescopic coil springs, refrigeration, radio-telephone, military siren and blue lamp. Mr. Somoza stated that since the automobile was of pillarless design, his intended use did not require armor-plating. On March 2, 1958, the auto was shipped to Nicaragua on the S.S. Hein Hoyer owned by Hanseatic Vaase Line. Twenty years later, on December 14, 1977, A. Somoza (Anastasio) wrote an official letter from Casa Presidencial, Hacienda El Retiro to Senor Julio Cesar Gallardo expressing the family's appreciation for his service and telling him he would be given his brother Luis' car that had been in the family for so long. Somoza said the car would be legally transferred to Gallardo on December 23. He wished Gallardo “feliz navidad” (Merry Christmas) and referred to their relationship with the term, “amigos”. On December 23, 1977, A. Somoza and Gallardo signed a Bill of Sale for un cordoba C$1.00. The document number on the carta de vente (bill of sale) was 0,003,428. The document stated that the vehicle was a blue 1958 Mercedes Benz limousine 300D with chassis number 7500143. The paper was officially stamped and signed by Dr. Ulises Fonesca Talavera, a Notario Publico in Nicaragua. In the Carta de Vente, Gallardo agreed to restore the car in minute detail as assessed by Senor Carlos Jose Mendoza of the Mercedes-Benz agency in Managua. Gallardo agreed that the car was to be considered as a museum piece and a national treasure. Gallardo promised that it would never leave its homeland of Nicaragua. Gallardo kept his word. He had the car restored. On August 4 1978, the Club de Vehiculos Clasicos de Nicaragua awarded Julio Cesar Gallardo first place for Concurso de Elegancia. When Gallardo signed the Carta de Vente, he had every intention of honouring the agreement to keep the car in the country of Nicaragua as a national treasure. In August 1978 Sandinistas storm the National Palace, taking government officials hostage and

demanding the release of political prisoners. Somoza resigns and flees the country with one hundred associates and family and finds exile in Paraguay. When the Sandinistas came to power in 1979 they released Decree #3 (Decreto No. 3, Aprobado el 20 de julio de 1979) which was for the confiscation of all Somoza family property. This decree extended to all Somoza family, soldiers, officers and presumably associates who left the country. We have to assume that Anastasio's long-time chauffeur. According to documents with the car, the same Carlos Jose Mendoza of the Mercedes agency in Managua delivered the car to the port for export to California and its new owner. Since previously the Somozas owned this Mercedes agency, we have to assume it was now under government control. This Mercedes Benz was part of this fortune. “The most elegant car in the world,” the Mercedes Benz 300D had a distinctive regal appearance that was unmatched by any car on the road. It

was also touted as being large and powerful. These adjectives made the Mercedes an icon for Somoza's ego image, “Ownership was the mark of a man who had reached the top.” On Wednesday, September 17, 1980 in his exile Paraguay, Anastasio Somoza Debayle climbed into his white 1979 Mercedes Benz limousine. Seven blocks later, a bazooka rocket hit the limo broadside tearing away the roof. Somoza and his long-time faithful driver, Senor Julio Cesar Gallardo, were killed. The Somoza family's 43-year dynasty had finally come to an end. Somoza was buried in Miami, Florida. The car then turned up on eBay in 2009 and sold for an undisclosed sum to a collector. MERCEDES REWIND: 300 SEL 6.3 (W109) M ercedes-Benz caused a sensation at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1968 with the 300 SEL 6.3 (W 109). Because the Stuttgart brand’s V8-powered top-of-the-range luxury model delivered the performance of a sports car: acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds, and a top speed of 220 km/h, was outstanding at the time. Not to mention the extensive standard equipment and the inimitable comfort of a Mercedes-Benz. The 300 SEL 6.3 continues to fascinate with its high level of perfection. It has long been amongst the most coveted of collector’s items bearing the Mercedes star. Stuttgart. Good “6.3s” are rare, this one is in outstanding condition. Test drive with a Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3: it impressively demonstrates all the qualities of this power saloon, a dream car when it premiered in 1968. Today the 300 SEL 6.3 is regarded as a dream classic, precisely because of these

strengths. The V8 signals its readiness with a soft growl when the key is turned. 184 kW (250 hp) at 4,000 rpm encounter a kerb weight of 1,780 kilograms – an excellent combination. A gentle nudge of the accelerator delivers the power, and within seconds the saloon is in its element on the clear country road. It seems to look forward to every bend, then accelerates effortlessly out of it and glides powerfully along the next straight. The large steering wheel with its slim rim feels slightly unfamiliar at first, but thanks to servo assistance it makes steering the “6.3” a highly pleasurable experience. The saloon not only impresses with its power and perfect controllability, but also with outstanding comfort, generous spaciousness and a pleasant ambience. No wonder that the 300 SEL 6.3, which rounded off the W109 series as the flagship model in 1968, set new standards at the time. It is regarded as the progenitor of all highperformance Mercedes-Benz saloon models.

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC also benefits from the model facelift. With a diamond grille, new LED High Performance headlamps (optional extra; standard for A 45) and newly designed rear lights with exhaust tailpipes integrated into the bumper, the new generation emphasises the sportiness and dynamism of the successful compact class series. An instrument cluster of tubular design with high-quality dial graphics and galvanised switches upgrades the quality interior, as does the large, free-standing and frameless display of the head

unit, which is now to be had with a larger screen diagonal of 20.3 cm (8 inches) on request. New colours and materials, as well as new finishes for the trim in the dashboard, ensure a fresh ambience. New features include Sahara beige / black leather in the Exclusive package and a new seat design with red or green highlights in the Style line. Optional LED High Performance headlamps and ambience lighting which can be individualised with twelve colours and five dimming levels – the equipment range for the A-Class has been judiciously expanded in many areas. Also new is seat cushion depth adjustment by up to 60 mm – a standard feature in all equipment lines. THE ICONIC PAGODA T

he word alone incites wanderlust: “Pagoda” alludes to the Far East, with an exotic Asian note and warmer climes. Many were left longing for the sun in central Europe in the seemingly never-ending 1962/63 “winter of the century”.When the MercedesBenz 230 SL was presented at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 1963, it caused a sensation within the industry. Known internally as W113, the two-seater roadster unites a decadent delivery of power with an engaging elegance and is distinguished by outstanding comfort, excellent driving performance and exemplary driving safety. The 230 SL is the first sports car worldwide with a safety body consisting of a rigid passenger cell and front and rear crumple zones. In following this strategy, it was the first time that Béla Barényi’s knowledge of passive safety in vehicle bodies was implemented in a sports car by the safetyconscious Mercedes-Benz designers. Named after the shape of its roof, the characteristic form of the removable Coupé roof with its inwardly pointing curvature additionally

improves passive safety: the concave form ensures greater stability at a lesser weight. Because the Coupé roof, designed by Paul Bracq, is reminiscent of the curved roofs of Far Eastern temples it didn’t take long for the new SL to receive the nickname “Pagoda”. Under the direction of the designer Friedrich Geiger, a modern vehicle was designed which had clear and distinctive lines – it is the cult vehicle for fans of open-top driving and additionally a worthy successor for the two successful previous SL 300 and 190 series. “In all the years I have been driving, I cannot remember ever driving a car that I would have liked to own more (except for racing cars!)”. (Sir Stirling Moss in a letter to the racing director Alfred Neubauer.) Sports car with genes from the luxury segment. The technical basis of the Roadster was the luxury 220 SE Saloon, better known as the “tailfin”. As the predecessor of today’s S-Class, it donated its shortened and strengthened frame floor assembly to the sports car as well as its front and rear suspension. Its

engine also forms the basis for the development of the 150-hp M127 straight six-cylinder engine, with which the new SL-series was launched on the market in 1963. The 230 SL quickly received a higher-capacity successor: at the end of 1966 the 250 SL replaced the 230 SL, which was followed by the 280 SL in 1968, the third and last variant of the W113 to be released on the market. It featured the M 130 engine. All three SL model series were available as either a Roadster with folding soft top or as a sports car with removable Coupé roof. Alternatively, they were also available with both the removable Coupé roof and a Roadster soft top. In March 1971, the production of the W113 ended. The successor model series 107 with a completely new design replaced the technically and stylistically ground-breaking “Pagoda” and set new standards itself, such as having the first eight-cylinder engine in an SL. For the fans however, the “Pagoda” remained the measure of all things – especially in the eyes of the owners of the 48,912 examples that rolled off the production line in the years from 1963 to 1971.

THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ G-CLASS: AN ICON REINVENTS ITSELF

he new Mercedes-Benz G-Class presents itself in top form. Whether on or off the road and whatever the operating conditions, the off-road vehicle impresses with its performance, cutting-edge assistance systems, outstanding handling, and safety. At the same time, the new suspension, the DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes, the "G-Mode" and the three 100 percent differential locks enhance not only ride comfort but also agility – on any surface. "The new G-Class is setting the bar higher still in all relevant areas – in terms of performance both on and off the road as well as with regard to comfort and telematics. Our 'longest-serving' model series is therefore ideally equipped to continue its success story. In short, the new 'G' is still a 'G', only better", stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. The G-Class, the luxury off-road vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, has long been considered a design icon. Its external appearance has not changed significantly since 1979. Iconic elements continue to serve very specific purposes, now as then, and to give the G Class its unique appearance. All these are still found in the new G Class: the distinctive door handle and the characteristic closing sound, the robust exterior protective strip, the exposed

spare wheel on the rear door and the prominent indicator lights. Extraordinary features like these in concert with the off-roader's angular lines define its special look. More than ever, the new G-Class appears to be cast from a single piece. All surfaces have a more taut design and are have more tension, while the surface quality has been taken to an even higher level. This results in narrower, more precise gaps and more harmonious transitions. In addition, the wheel arches and bumpers form a more integral part of the body and thus look less like add-on features. While the exterior maintains the iconic classic look, the interior of the G-Class has undergone a fundamental modern redesign which reinterprets the genes of the classic vehicle to reflect the exterior. With its off-road character and top-class luxury appointments, the G-Class has always combined two extremes into a harmonious symbiosis. Unmistakable at first glance and from the first touch, only high-quality materials are used. Every detail is finished by hand with the utmost care. The primary goal of development was to redefine the quality of the handling both on and off the road. This goal has been achieved: The new G-Class performs even better off-road, while on the road it is significantly more agile, dynamic and comfortable

than its predecessor. The G thus remains a true G – thanks to its standard ladder-type frame, the three 100-percent differential locks and LOW RANGE offroad gear reduction. The new suspension emerged from the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz G GmbH and Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The result is an independent suspension with double-wishbone front axle in combination with a rigid rear axle. As part of their work, the engineers had the task of fighting for every millimetre, because off-road capability not least also means maximum ground clearance. The raising of the axles makes a decisive contribution in this respect, while requiring a strut tower brace in the engine compartment to achieve the ruggedness objectives. The components of the double-wishbone front axle are directly mounted to the ladder-type frame without a subframe. The lower wishbone's attachment points on the frame in Z-direction are positioned as high up as possible. This arrangement ensures good driveability beyond the asphalt. Specifically for the G-Class, the new front axle is designed in such a robust way that the off-road performance and off-road capabilities of its predecessor are maintained and partly even surpassed. À la carte: "Comfort", "Sport", "Individual" or "Eco" DYNAMIC SELECT is now available with up to five driving modes for the G Class. This allows adjusting the vehicle characteristics in seconds at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the characteristics of the engine, transmission, suspension, steering and assistance systems at the driver's behest. The four programs "Comfort", "Sport", "Eco" and "Individual" can be set conveniently via the DYNAMIC SELECT rocker switch. In "ECO" mode, a particularly fueloptimised driving style is possible, for example. In "Sport" mode, on the other hand, the shift points of the automatic transmission, the throttle response of the engine, and the parameters of the electric steering system and the exhaust flap are changed. "Individual" allows drivers to configure their own preferred vehicle settings.

ore space, more power, more goose pimples – the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door model delivers driving experiences in new dimensions and extends the AMG model family. The new coupé is the first four-door sports car from Affalterbach and draws directly on the legendary SLS and AMG GT models of success. As another vehicle developed autonomously by Mercedes-AMG it combines unique design, high comfort and outstanding sports car engineering with an athletic, four-door fastback layout. It thus offers more space and more potential uses. Systematic expansion of the AMG GT family with the 4-door Coupé opens up the sports car segment to those looking for a vehicle for day-to-day use, but unwilling to go without the unparalleled performance of Mercedes-AMG. Clearly recognisable as a member of the AMG GT family, the new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé follows the design philosophy of Sensual Purity. It takes the striking proportions with convex surfaces and a muscular body and develops them to exciting effect for a four-door variant of an AMG GT Coupé. The front view with a long bonnet and two power domes leaves no doubt that this is the youngest member of the AMG GT family. The 4-door coupé follows the design tradition of the successful AMG GT models: the powerful body exudes dynamism and motivation. Sensuous shapes with convex surfaces lend the four-door GT timeless elegance, whilst the flowing silhouette with the lowered greenhouse flags up its sporting credentials. As in the AMG GT R radiator shutters, the Air panel in front of the centre cooling air inlet improves the car's aerodynamic efficiency. Slim MULTIBEAM LED headlamps, the AMG-specific radiator protection grille, the Shark Nose and the front apron with its enhanced Jet Wing (with a flowing A-Wing on the six-cylinder model) also lend the youngest model from Affalterbach the hallmark presence of the AMG GT family. The two eight-cylinder models can be identified through the three horizontal louvres in the side

front air intakes, the Jet Wing with its trim element in Silver Shadow, the distinctive diffuser on the tail end and the two-pipe exhaust system with trapezoidal tailpipe trims. The six-cylinder variant, meanwhile, has one louvre in each of the air inlet grilles, round twin tailpipe trims and a somewhat less pronounced rear diffuser.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds clearly illustrates this, as does the maximum speed of 315 km/h. In the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 252 g/km) the V8 unit provides 430 kW (585 hp) and 800 Nm maximum torque. The sprint from standstill to 100 km/h lasts just 3.4 seconds, and the top speed is 310 km/h.

The new AMG GT 4-Door Coupé offers an extensive portfolio of exterior equipment packages, which can be used to add different highlights in terms of design. The Night Package comprises high-gloss black trim, whilst, for example, the Chrome package emphasises the luxurious character of the car with trim and an insert in high-gloss chrome. Two Carbon-Fibre Packages offer different versions of carbon-fibre trim, whilst the optional Aerodynamics package gives the car an even sportier look and is a new feature in this segment. It includes additional functional features in high-gloss black, the Jet Wing in Silver Shadow in the front apron and the fixed rear aerofoil and also naturally reduces lift at higher speeds. With the V8 style package the sixcylinder model can also be equipped with design features from the eight-cylinder versions.

The AMG 4.0-litre V8 engine works with the proven biturbocharging, where the two exhaust-gas turbochargers are arranged not on the exterior, but between the cylinder banks. The advantages of the "hot inner V" are in the compact engine design and the immediate response of the exhaust-gas turbochargers.

The exciting AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is already used in numerous AMG models. Its output has been enhanced yet further for the new Mercedes AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined 11.2 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined 256 g/km)* and ensures superior performance on a par with a sports car. It delivers 470 kW (639 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm, which is available over a wide engine speed range from 2500 to 4500 rpm. The top engine of the new four-door AMG GT thus exudes effortless superiority in every engine speed range.

For maximum efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has also equipped the V8 engines with the AMG Cylinder Management cylinder deactivation system. In the partial-load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which crucially reduces the fuel consumption. When the driver has selected the "Comfort" drive program, the cylinder deactivation system is available in the wide engine speed range from 1000 to 3250 rpm. A special display on the instrument cluster states whether the cylinder deactivation system is in use and whether the engine is presently operating in the four- or eightcylinder mode. The transition between these two operating states is immediate, fast and torqueneutral, so the occupants do not have to relinquish any comfort.

In order to meet the high demands of impressive driving dynamics, Mercedes-AMG engages all the components this takes. With its sophisticated design the body shell of the

Mercedes-AMG GT 63/53 plays an equally crucial role as the ingenious control strategy of the allwheel drive system. And it is only in the optimum interplay together with the active aerodynamics, the rear axle steering and the ESPÂŽ that the complicated suspension tuning unleashes its full potential. Through the complex networking of all the systems and components the developers in Affalterbach were able to bestow on the car the high level of driving dynamics expected of it as a member of the AMG GT family.

The interior presents a symbiosis of performance and exclusivity and integrates an ultramodern, new type of operating system into the atmosphere of a Gran Turismo. The sculptural instrument panel forms an interesting contrast here to the large trim element with its flowing style, which merges into the driver's door in a wraparound effect. Illuminated turbine-look air vents refine the high-quality impression and underline the sporty appearance. The eye-catching feature

in all AMG GT interiors is the centre console with its stylised V8 design, putting the spotlight on the brand's performance claim as well as optimally fulfilling functional requirements. Two high-resolution displays each measuring 12.3 inches dominate the Widescreen Cockpit, which is standard in the V8 and optional in the inline 6-cylinder version. Three different styles are available for selection for these all-digital displays: "Classic", "Sport" and the completely new "Supersport". Depending on the driving style or interior equipment, the different styles can be set at any time via the instrument cluster or the central display.

When it comes to the seats, too, MercedesAMG proves that comfort and exclusivity need not conflict with a performance-oriented vehicle configuration. The driver's and front passenger seat can be configured in different scenarios. The selection ranges from the sporty, comfortable seat and a seat with elegant diamond quilting to an

extremely contoured performance seat with an integral head restraint. The four-door AMG GT also offers different seating configurations to meet all demands for the rear, too. These range from an asymmetrically folding rear bench seat for the family to two variants with two individual seats respectively. The High-Class variant has everything a business saloon requires. The rear passengers can select diverse features via a touchpad screen integrated into the console between the seats. The features range from calling up the dynamism data via the AMG menu to controlling the ambient lighting or the climate control and seat heating.

WHAT IS REMAPPING?

ost modern vehicles contain an ECU (or Engine Control Unit) that is effectively a small computer which controls how the engine works. Vehicle manufacturers de-tune the engine by setting the software on the ECU to default before sending the vehicle out. This is done due to the manufacturers having to sell their cars all over the world, this means that the software settings on the ECU must take into account different climates, laws & restrictions and varying quality of fuels. Vehicle remapping is basically the modification/replacement of the manufactures default software on a vehicles ECU.

HOW DOES IT WORK? A vehicle remap replaces default software on the ECU, overwriting it with new software which can be programmed to optimize the cars overall performance. This is known as vehicle remapping because the ECU is essentially a program that controls how the engine works. When your car is remapped, the tuned software is plugged into your cars serial port (or OBD port) which then overwrites the engine map with the new version to enhance engine performance. The ability to flash directly through the OBD has brought the tuning industry on leaps and bounds, with constant development on the engine now being much quicker via the flash process, it has enabled Celtic Tuning to develop some of the best software in the world.

WHAT IS CHIP TUNING? Chip tuning is the original definition of what modern day ECU Remapping has become. Chip tuning requires the removal of the Eprom from the ECU and the software is programmed to the chip on the bench. The software inside the chip is what is referred to as remapping, i.e. altering the standard software within a chip. Chip tuning or chipping has become less and less prevalent in the market place as, since 1996, OBD remapping has taken its place enabling remapping to be done via the OBD (on-board diagnostics) port. We work on all ages of ECU from the early EDC's requiring chip tuning right the way through to modern MEDC17 locked tricore processor ECU's with tuner protection. A Celtic Tuning superchip from Turbo Dynamics can provide you with all stages of upgrade from a basic ECU Remap right up to full engine conversions. WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF ECU REMAPPING? Many people say that ECU remapping doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t affect fuel usage, however this is not technically true. Because of the process involved in ECU remapping more fuel is going to be consumed in order to produce the increase in power. If the car is driven in an enthusiastic way after the remap has been carried out then the fuel economy will not increase (and in some cases may decreases). If, however, the driver modifies their driving style to make the most

of the increased power and torque throughout the rev range then fuel economy can be increased. A good example of this could be that the improvement in torque produced by the engine after remapping means the driver no longer has to drop down a gear to maintain speed on an incline or may not have to change gear as frequently in traffic. All of these little things add up to an improvement in fuel economy. WHY CHOOSE VEHICLE REMAPPING? There are many reasons to choose vehicle remapping. Firstly, you will notice that your engine responds better when the accelerator is pressed. The overall torque and power will be noticeably increased. Power delivery will be smoother making for a much safer driving experience, which in turn also makes it easier and safer to overtake. During normal driving you will notice that your MPG is better which not only decreases the cost of fuel that you will have to pay, but it also minimizes your carbon foot print. Throttle response will be improved and the rev range will be enhanced. ARE THERE ANY DISADVANTAGES? Some people have reported engine damage from ECU remapping, but this is exceptionally rare. As comfortable as never before, as dynamic as always.

he Australian Grand Prix on 25 March 2018 kicked off Mercedes-Benz's year of “Record addicts and driving champions”. As world champion Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Valtteri Bottas compete in the Formula 1 cars of MercedesAMG Petronas Motorsport, 2018 also provides an opportunity for us to look back on numerous motorsport anniversaries for the Stuttgart-based brand. Every win by a Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport racing car is also a brilliant reminder of the Stuttgart brand's unique motorsport history. 2018 sees Mercedes-Benz celebrating a whole series of such outstanding events under the banner “Record addicts and driving champions” at various venues, including the Techno Classica show in Essen (21 to 25 March 2018). The anniversaries range from the one-two-three win in the 1908 French Grand Prix to Lewis Hamilton's first world championship for Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes in 2008. Following four double championship wins in a row for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport, in 2018 Hamilton and his teammateValtteri Bottas have the chance to claim the fifth Formula 1 drivers and constructors title since 2014. The history of motorsport victories by MercedesBenz and its predecessor brands is almost as long as that of the automobile itself. Vehicles with Daimler engines dominated many early automobile races in France, for example, the Marseilles–Nice race over 226 kilometres on 6 March 1898 (onetwo-three win) and the Paris–Bordeaux race covering 573 kilometres on 11 and 12 May 1898 (victory by René de Knyff). Daimler also notched up wins in 1898 in the Berlin–Leipzig–Berlin longdistance tour and the first Dolomites tour.

Further milestones in motorsport history were achieved 110 years ago – with Daimler-MotorenGesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie still competing as rivals: DMG won the year's most important race, the French Grand Prix. Benz & Cie. was victorious in the no less prestigious first Prince Heinrich Tour. And Victor Hémery won the Saint Petersburg to Moscow race over 686 kilometres in a Benz 120 hp on 1 June 1908, setting a new record for the course in the process. The Prince Heinrich Tour caused a particular sensation in Germany. This competition, which took place from 1908 to 1910, was launched by Prince Heinrich of Prussia, brother of the German emperor and an automobile enthusiast. The premiere of the international tour from 9 to 11 June 1908 covered a distance of 2201 kilometres. With a total of 129 vehicles competing, the tour was won by Fritz Erle in a Benz 7.5-litre special touring car rated at 37 kW (50 hp). Just a few weeks later, DMG and Benz & Cie.

dominated the French Grand Prix. This “Grand Prix de l’Automobile-Club de France” succeeded the international Gordon Bennett race as the leading international motorsport event in 1906. On 7 July 1908 Christian Lautenschlager was first across the finishing line in the 140 hp Mercedes Grand Prix racing car, ahead of Victor Hémery and René Hanriot in their Benz 120 hp racing cars. The two German companies, which were to merge to form Daimler-Benz AG with the Mercedes-Benz brand in 1926, thus took first, second and third places. Supercharged sports cars and Silver Arrows 90 years ago, Mercedes-Benz scored a stunning one-two-three victory with the new SS supercharged sports car (W 06) in the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring on 15 July 1928. Rudolf Caracciola and Christian Werner won the event, ahead of Otto Merz and the Christian Werner / Willy Walb team. As the drivers took turns behind the wheel in theprevailing hot weather, Werner's name appears twice. In the racing version, the

vehicle with a 7.1-litre six-cylinder in-line engine delivered an output of up to 184 kW (250 hp) when the supercharger was active. The SS had previously chalked up its first victory at the Baden-Baden automobile tournament at Bühler Höhe on 29 June 1928. At the wheel: Rudolf Caracciola. On 29 July 1928 Mercedes-Benz fielded the legendary SSK for the first time in the Gabelbach race, and it was once again Rudolf Caracciola who wasted no time in setting a new course record in this premiere. It was behind the wheel of this racing sports car developed from the SS model and featuring a shorter wheelbase that he also clocked up a new record to win the racing car class in the International ADAC Schauinsland Hill Climb Race. 80 years ago Rudolf Caracciola won the 1938 Grand Prix season, becoming European champion in Mercedes-Benz's Silver Arrows for the third time after 1935 and 1937. The Stuttgart-based brand developed a new racing car for this season on the basis of the new rules introduced by the Association Internationale des Automobile Clubs Reconnus (AIACR). The W 154 was powered by a V12 engine with a displacement of 2962 cc and supercharging which delivered up to 333 kW (453 hp) in its first season. In 1938 Caracciola won the Coppa Acerbo at Pescara and the Swiss Grand Prix at the Bremgarten circuit, also coming in second three times (twice together with Hermann Lang) and taking two 3rd places (once together with Manfred von Brauchitsch). 40 years ago Mercedes-Benz dominated the

long-distance rally “ Vuelta a la América del Sud”, which was staged from 17 to 24 September 1978, with a stunning performance that saw it take the first five places. Andrew Cowan and Colin Malkin crossed the finishing line first, ahead of Sobieslaw Zasada and Andrzej Zembruski (both teams competing in the Mercedes-Benz 450 SLC rally vehicle) and Tony Fowkes and Klaus Kaiser in a Mercedes-Benz 280 E (W 123). In the following years, the near-series V8 Coupés of the C 107 model series also made the running in the African Bandama rally. Return to the circuit 30 years ago, Mercedes-Benz officially entered the sports car world championship in 1988. The involvement in sports car prototypes Group C marked the Stuttgart brand's return to the race circuit. Five years earlier, in 1984, the company had signed a partnership agreement with Peter Sauberʼs Swiss racing team, under which MercedesBenz was to deliver the engines for the Sauber teamʼs racing cars. In 1985 Sauber presented the C 8, which was powered by the Mercedes-Benz M 117 V8 engine. The C 9 was introduced in 1987 and officially included the name “Mercedes” in its model designation (initially Kouros-Mercedes C 9, as of 1988 Sauber-Mercedes C 9). With more than 515 kW (700 hp) of engine power, the Sauber-Mercedes C 9 won the German Super Cup racing series in the 1988 season, clocking up its first win on 29 May 1988 at the Hockenheimring. Sauber-Mercedes was also victorious in five world championship meetings: the 800-kilometer

race around Jerez (Spain), the Czechoslovakian Grand Prix in Brno, the ADAC 1000-kilometre race at the Nürburgring, the 1000-kilometre SpaFrancorchamps race and the Lucas Supersprint at Sandown Park (Australia), where Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jochen Mass crossed the finishing line ahead of their teammates Mauro Baldi and Stefan Johansson. In the following year, SauberMercedes finally won the world championship with the C 9. The year 1988 also saw Mercedes-Benz officially take part in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM) for the first time. Five teams competed in the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 Group A, backed up by factory support from the Stuttgart brand. Roland Asch was runner-up in the DTM Championship at the first attempt in 1988. 20 years ago, in 1998, Mercedes-Benz took the FIA GT title for the second time. The duo Klaus Ludwig and Ricardo Zonta were crowned champions after notching up 5 wins and 4 second places in the AMG Mercedes CLK-GTR and CLK-LM racing touring cars. Together with the other driver teams, AMG Mercedes actually won all ten races of the 1998 season and clearly dominated the brand rankings. Its track record in this season included a one-two-three win in Oschersleben on 12 April 1998 and six onetwo finishes. The CLK-GTR powered by a V12 engine was the winning vehicle in 1997. From the third race of the 1998 season it was replaced by the CLK-LM with a V8 engine which was originally developed for the 24-hour race in Le Mans.

Mercedes-Benz W201 A compact revolution in the field of safety.

n 8 December 1982 MercedesBenz presented the W201 model series. It is part of the successful history of the C-Class â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the vehicles in this segment have borne this name since 1993. The technologically and aesthetically ground-breaking saloon established itself successfully in the market and also achieved a number of highlights as a successful motorsport touring car in the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). Today the W201 is a popular young classic â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and just as fresh as it was when it celebrated its premiere. The back story to the W 201 started in 1973, when Mercedes-Benz was taking up older ideas for a vehicle below the two established classes. Inspiration also came from North America. This is where the requirements for economical fleet fuel consumption were sharpened. In addition, there was a great deal of interest in a compact second car offering the comfort and safety

standards of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car. Commenting on the new vehicle in January 1974, Chief Engineer Prof. Dr Hans Scherenberg said: "It is clear that it has to be a typical Mercedes-Benz." Here Scherenberg referred to refinement and safety, among other features, as defining Mercedes-Benz characteristics. And as part of the first specification book drawn up a little later, it was decided that the W 201 was to "consciously break away from the other vehicles of the medium-size category due to the qualities expected by customers under the brand symbol with regard to quality, safety and refinement". Series production of the W 201 began in Sindelfingen, after which production also commenced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Bremen. The production facilities there were significantly expanded for the new model series. To this day the Bremen plant remains the main plant for the C-Class, which became the successor to the W 201 with the 202 series

introduced in 1993. However, the idea of a compact, sophisticated passenger car dates back even further in the brand's history. The Benz Velo (1894 to 1900, world's first large-scale production car) and the Mercedes 8/11 hp (1901 to 1903) are already considered the pioneers of the compact class. The key forerunners in this market segment also include the Mercedes-Benz 170 (W 15, built from 1931 to 1936). Since the 1950s, MercedesBenz has been continually developing concepts for more compact vehicles. The W 201 brought together all of these ideas and concepts into a vehicle which appealed to customers in both technical and aesthetic terms. It marked the start of the successful history of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and pre-empted the dynamism of the model initiative. Up to August 1993, some 1,879,630 models of the W 201 series were produced in total. The Mercedes-Benz 190 and 190E models

celebrated their premiere, making the start of a completely new chapter in the more recent history of the Stuttgart-based brand. This is because the W201 model series, designated the compact class at the time, extended the product range with the addition of a fourth model series family alongside the luxury saloons of the S-Class, the models of the upper midrange category (subsequently the E-Class) and the SL sports cars. Today the W201, which was built between 1982 and 1993, is a fascinating classic with the freshness of a popular young classic. The current C-Class from the 205 model series (fuel consumption, combined: 8.4-3.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions:

195 - 99 g/km*) is transporting its genes into the future in a more varied manner than ever before: as a Saloon, Estate, CoupĂŠ and Cabriolet. The outstanding technical and aesthetic level of the saloons of the W201 series highlights the great importance which Mercedes-Benz attaches to new product development. Colloquially referred to as the "190" or the "Baby-Benz", the model series celebrated its debut with two four-cylinder petrol engines: 190 was the name given initially to the 66 kW (90 hp) carburettor engine variant. The 190E with petrol injection produced 90 kW(122 hp). Mercedes-Benz subsequently and

systematically extended the model range, producing a host of innovative models. Just a few examples: the 190D (53 kW/72 hp, from 1983) for example was known as the "whisper diesel", and was the first series-produced passenger car with engine soundproofing. New levels of performance for the diesel model came in 1986 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; admittedly exclusively for the American market up until the autumn of 1987 in the guise of the five-cylinder 190D 2.5 Turbo variant (90 kW/122 hp). For the powerful sixcylinder 190E 2.6 (122 kW/166 hp, also from 1986), the engineers conquered the technical challenge of installing the six-cylinder in-line M103 into the engine bay of the W201.
