Gullwing Parts

Hungarian Unimog

Key body parts for the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” (W 198) are again available in factory quality. They can be ordered by their part number from any Mercedes-Benz sales partner. The production process combines state-of-the-art technology with traditional craftsmanship. It guarantees a high accuracy of fit of the metal parts while minimising the need for subsequent work on the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz Classic developed the process in cooperation with a certified supplier. The Gullwing is still one of the world’s dream cars. Between 1954 and 1957, just 1,400 units were built of the famous car, which was voted “Sports Car of the Century” in 1999. The conservation of these valuable vehicles sometimes requires key body parts. Mercedes-Benz Classic has now reproduced these parts, with others in preparation.

The Hungarian state railway (MÁV) invested in rail network maintenance with a total of nine Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 423 for use on road and rail. To guarantee universal year-round use on the rails, the Unimog U 423 delivered to MÁV are equipped with efficient implements such as lifting work platform, crane, rail grinder, mower boom, track sprayer, measuring pantograph and snow blower. The various demountable bodies allow a wide range of maintenance operations in connection with the rail infrastructure, including the maintenance of overhead wires, cutting-back of branches along the side of the track, weed control in the track bed or – in winter - snowclearing on the track, for example in case of snowdrifts.

The body parts meet the high standards of Daimler AG and can be ordered by their part number from any Mercedes-Benz sales partner. Their surfaces are electrophoretically painted, which assures the highest technical and visual standards. The metal parts are produced for Mercedes-Benz Classic by a certified supplier, whose expertise includes the highly complex construction of tools from optimised 3D data from original bodies. Metal parts produced on these tools are then worked into their final shape by hand using wooden mallets – another special process. The result of this symbiosis between state-of-the-art production technology and traditional craftsmanship is a high accuracy of fit that minimises the need for subsequent work on the vehicle. The precise 3D tool data also provide the basis for quality inspection by means of painstaking false colour comparison. The measuring tool receives the data as a reference and uses false colours to visualise the measured deviations between the desired state and the actual state, thus making it possible for the measurement results to be unambiguously and quickly interpreted.

Rapid switch between road and rail The fast switch between road and rail can be accomplished in just a few minutes on any flat track area, such as at a level crossing. The journey to the point of use can take place by road at up to 89 km/h, which allows maximum flexibility and economic efficiency in day-today working. Also, when used as a road-railer, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog comes ex-factory with all the relevant equipment that marks it out as a professional on-road implement carrier. This includes the hydrostatic drive (EasyDrive), which, in this case, is used for working with the rail grinder or mower boom and which permits a finely adjustable variable working speed at constant engine revolutions. When using the rail grinder, the Unimog can also be operated from outside the cab by means of remote control of the hydrostatic drive. The Unimogs are additionally equipped with a mechanical front PTO shaft for powering the snow blower, efficient dual-circuit working hydraulics as well as various mechanical and electronic interfaces.

X Class partner two wheeled pro continued... Mountain Bike World Championships. Ten races on three continents, followed by millions around the world – the 2018 Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup got under way at the beginning of March. The favourite for the title in the starting line-up is six-times mountain biking world champion and Olympic medallist Nino Schurter. In the coming races, the Swiss cyclist will enjoy support from Mercedes-Benz Vans with the impressive X Class at his side. "The X-Class is a terrific vehicle", says Nino Schurter. "Not only does the loading area offer enough space for my mountain bikes - the pickup is also great for reaching unknown trails in the mountains. Together with the cool design and the comfort, the X-Class is the prime choice for me – both in my sporting career and in private." The 31-year-old swiss cyclist has countless junior titles to his name, as well as an excellent track record in U23 races at international level. He has taken part in three Olympics, winning bronze, silver and gold. Schurter became a mountain biking legend by winning the world championship six times between 2009 and 2017. "We are delighted that Mercedes-Benz Vans is an active partner of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup and Championships and proud to have now also recruited Nino Schurter as a brand ambassador", says Sonja Schneemann, Head of Marketing Communications and Operations, Mercedes-Benz Vans. "Nino Schurter is a towering figure in mountain biking – an up-and-coming international sport that is enjoying growing popularity. Our pickup fits in perfectly here. The X-Class cuts a fine figure both on- and off-road, offers a large stowage area for sports equipment and appeals to people who actively pursue sports and recreational activities all over the world."

mercedesclub.org.uk

MERCEDES-BENZ AT THE 1000 MIGLIA 2018:

Continuing an excellent partnership T

he 1000 Miglia is one of the most important events in the international classics calendar. This year the legendary event will take place between 16 and 19 May 2018 – once again Mercedes-Benz will be acting as the automotive sponsor. The close connection between the 1000-mile race in Italy held since 1927 and Mercedes-Benz goes back almost 90 years. The brand's great successes include the victory in 1931 by Rudolf Caracciola as the first non-Italian driver, and the sensational success of Stirling Moss in 1955, with an overall victory and a still unbeaten record time of 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds. This year Mercedes-Benz will once again act as an automotive sponsor of the 1000 Miglia to celebrate the highlights of historic motorsport in the footsteps of the legendary 1000-mile race, thus continuing the excellent partnership with 1000 Miglia organisers. Mercedes-Benz will once again be attending the event taking place between 16 and 19 May 2018, starting and finishing in Brescia as well as along the around 1600 kilometre journey

1000 Miglia Âť 13

to Rome and back. The participation of Mercedes-Benz Classic with outstanding vehicles from its own collection is traditionally a highlight of the modern 1000 Miglia. In 2018 there will be plenty of type SSK (W 06), 300 SL "Gullwing" (W 198), 190 SL (W 121) and 220 "Ponton" (W 180) vehicles on the starting line-up. Mercedes-Benz Classic Brand Ambassadors and automotive aficionados will be at the wheel of the vehicles. The modern version of the 1000 Miglia is a reliability run on a route which closely follows that of the original road race. Entry is restricted to vehicle types that took part in the original 1000 Miglia during the period from 1927 to 1957. Mercedes-Benz and the 1000 Miglia are very closely linked by virtue of their shared history. The

German brand has taken part in the 1000-mile race since 1930, i.e. almost since the very first event. At this debut event, works driver Rudolf Caracciola and his co-driver Christian Werner took 6th place in a Mercedes-Benz SSK ("Super Sport Short"). One year later Caracciola won the 1931 1000 Miglia as the first non-Italian driver with his co-driver Wilhelm Sebastian in an evolved Mercedes-Benz SSKL ("Super Sport Short Light"). In 1952 the 1000 Miglia provided the arena for the premiere of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL racing sports car (W 194), the brand's first newly developed racing car following the Second World War. Karl Kling and co-driver Hans Klenk took second place in their brand-new SL at their first attempt. In 1955 Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson

drove the 300 SLR racing sports car (W 196 S) to overall victory ahead of their team mate Juan Manuel Fangio. Also triumphant were the 300 SL "Gullwing" series production sports cars (W 198) in the Gran Turismo class over 1300 cc engine capacity, while the 180 D (W 120) landed a triple victory in the diesel class. In 1956 both the 220 "Ponton" (W 180) luxury class saloon and a Mercedes-Benz 190 SL (W 121) successfully took part in the race. The connection between the brand and the racing tradition is also underlined by the cooperation between Mercedes-Benz Classic and the Museo Mille Miglia in the historical monastical complex of Sant’Eufemia della Fonte just outside Brescia.

MERCEDES-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ SALOON AND ESTATE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PLEASURE…

T

he Mercedes-Benz E Class starts into the new model year extensively enhanced. The model series narrows the gap to the S-Class with the cuttingedge driving assistance systems. The new SportStyle Package for the Saloon and Estate models combines attractive exterior and interior equipment features. The latest E Class is available for order now, with the Saloon and Estate arriving at authorised dealers starting in June 2018. With the Driving Assistance Package, all E-Class Saloon and Estate models come with the driving assistance systems that feature the range of functions with route-based driver support familiar from the S-Class. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver in steering and keeping a safe distance - the speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts. All E-Class body styles are now equipped with the latest generation of steering wheels.

DISTRONIC and cruise control are now operated directly on the steering wheel. The latest telematics generation now offers a dual phone mode as a standard function, which allows incoming calls to be accepted on two mobile phones at the same time. Outgoing calls are only possible with one phone at a time. A third device such as, for example, a tablet PC can be connected additionally via Bluetooth®. A new addition for the E-Class Saloon and Estate is the SportStyle Package. In combination with the standard exterior and interior specification, it comprises a chrome louvre below the front bumper, a badge on the front wing, a chrome trim element in the rear bumper in high-gloss black, as well as visible tailpipe embellishers. The standard specification features 43.2 cm (17inch) 10-spoke light-alloy wheels, painted himalayas grey with a high-sheen finish or

5-spoke light-alloy wheels of the same size. The interior features: Headliner in black fabric, centre console in black open-pore ash wood, sport pedals in brushed stainless steel with black rubber studs, and SportStyle Package floor mats. Anyone opting for the Avantgarde exterior and Avantgarde interior for their E Class can also order the SportStyle Package for the same additional charge. The radiator grille then features two high-gloss black louvres, the front bumper is fitted with chrome trim elements, and the 45.7 cm (18-inch) 5-spoke light-alloy wheels sport a black high-gloss finish. The high-gloss black chrome trim element in the rear bumper and the badge on the wing are also part of the package here. In addition to the aforementioned equipment scopes, the interior features chrome door pins and aluminium trim elements with light carbon grain.

Here are the basic innovations in the interior for Saloon and Estate at a glance: • The centre console versions in high-gloss brown ash wood and high-gloss brown walnut (each 178.50 euros1) provide a new look in the interior. • New are the painted rather than galvanised steering wheel shift paddles with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission (exception: in combination with AMG Line and on the Mercedes-AMG models). • Four new Aero Wheels in all of sizes 43.2 cm (17‘‘) and 45.7 cm (18‘‘) are available for the Avantgarde and Exclusive lines (in part without extra charge depending on line and wheel size), and contribute to a favourable real-life consumption. • The Seat Comfort Package is now included in the interior lines Exclusive, Avantgarde, and AMG Line as standard. It comprises electro-pneumatic four-way lumbar support, electric adjustment of the seat cushion angle as well a manual adjustment of the seat cushion length. • In combination with COMAND Online, the round analogue clock with Mercedes star in the dashboard console is now standard. A lot has happened in the model range as well. Completely new are the Mercedes AMG E 53 4MATIC+ Saloon and Estate (fuel consumption, combined: 8.9-8.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 203-200 g/km). The new models with power bulges replace the previous E 43 4MATIC models and make the entrance to the world of AMG desirable for additional groups of buyers. Its centrepiece is the electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twin-turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers peak torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and furthermore feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. Other technical highlights include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel-drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+. The E 400 d 4MATIC (fuel consumption, combined: 6.1-5.8 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 161-154 g/km)2 is now equipped with the new top--f-the-range engine of the premium diesel family and with an output of 250 kW (340 hp) has significantly more power than its predecessor. The characteristics of the six-cylinder in-line OM 656 engine include the steppedbowl combustion process, two-stage exhaust turbocharging as well as the use of CAMTRONIC variable valve timing. Its design is characterised by the combination of aluminium engine block and steel pistons as well as the further improved NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder walls.

With the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4MATIC+ as Saloon and Estate (fuel consumption, combined: 8.9-8.7 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 203200 g/km)2, the sports car and performance brand is opening up the world of AMG desirable for additional buyers. The centrepiece of the innovations is the electrified 3.0-litre engine featuring twinturbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6 cylinder in-line engine generates an output of 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers a peak torque of 520 Nm. Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and furthermore feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. Other technical highlights include the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the fully variable all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC+. The new E 53 4MATIC+ Saloon and the Estate replace the previous E 43 4MATIC models and have been extensively enhanced. The now fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive combines optimal traction for dynamic driving fun with a high level of driving safety in all conditions: in the dry, in the wet or in

snow. The transition from rear-wheel to all-wheel drive and vice versa is seamless, because the intelligent control is integrated into the overall vehicle system architecture. The AMG Driver's Package for the first time allows increasing the electronically limited top speed in the new E 53 models to 270 km/h. The compound braking system was adapted to the added power and performance: The front axle features crossdrilled and vented discs of size 370 x 36 mm with four-piston fixed callipers and AMG lettering, the rear axle is fitted with vented discs of size 360 x 26 mm with single-piston floating callipers A conspicuous visual differentiating feature of the new Saloon and the new Estate is the bonnet, which now features two striking power bulges. From the rear, the round twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome (with Night package in highgloss black) stand out. The bottom end of the rear apron is characterised by the new and more sporty diffuser look with three longitudinal fins. The dynamic appearance is rounded off by new optional 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in an aerodynamically optimised five-spoke design.

The interior of the new AMG models welcomes the passengers with model-specific equipment features, luxurious materials and the innovative control and display concept of the E-Class. The synthesis of exclusivity and sportiness is also emphasised by the sport seats with an AMG-specific upholstery layout, red contrasting topstitching and AMG badge, red seat belts as well as trim in carbon-fibre or matt silver glass fibre. The optional Performance seats are now also available in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre. The optional Widescreen Cockpit includes a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver that serves as the instrument cluster, as well as a central display above the centre console for the infotainment system. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a Widescreen Cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design. BOTTAS WINS PRESTIGIOUS ITALIAN TROPHY

V

altteri Bottas was awarded in May the prestigious Bandini Trophy in Brisighella, Italy. He received the prize in recognition of his breakthrough performance; securing both his first Formula One race wins and pole positions in 2017. The current campaign has seen a very consistent performance by the Finn, who came home second in both Bahrain and China and missed the win in Azerbaijan when his tyre punctured with only three laps to go. Valtteri is the 25th recipient of the trophy, which both Lewis Hamilton (2010) and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport (2015) received in previous years.

Established in 1992, the Bandini Trophy is given out by Associazione Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini. It is awarded in memory of the Italian racing driver Lorenzo Bandini, a race winner in both Formula One and the 24 Hours of Le Mans who tragically lost his life at the age of 31 in the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix. The recipient of the prize is chosen by a jury of 12, including Giancarlo Minardi, founder and former Managing Director of the Minardi Formula One team, Italian motorsport journalist Pino Allievi and Cesare Fiorio, former sporting director for Ferrari, Ligier and Minardi. The awards ceremony commenced on Saturday afternoon with Valtteri taking the

team’s 2016 Championship-winning car, the F1 W07 Hybrid, on a 12-kilometre drive through the Northern Italian countryside. Starting in the city of Faenza, home of the historic Minardi F1 team, Valtteri headed south towards Lorenzo Bandini’s home town of Brisighella – safely escorted by the police, who made sure the Finn didn’t show the full performance of the Silver Arrow. The W07 was raced in 2016, winning 19 out of the 21 Formula One races that season and resulting in both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport. As Valtteri left the Piazza del Popolo in Faenza in the W07, the picturesque village of Brisighella was already buzzling as a large crowd gathered for the parade of historic racing cars. The highlight of the day was the awards ceremony in the evening, where Lorenzo Bandini’s wife Margherita Freddi handed Valtteri the prestigious trophy in Brisighella. She was accompanied on stage by Francesco Asirelli, president of the Associazione Trofeo Lorenzo Bandini, Italian senator Stefano Collina, the president of the Emilia-Romagna region Stefano Bonaccini as well as Janne Taalas, Finnish ambassador to Italy. Upon receiving the trophy, Valtteri said: “This is a big honour. I saw the list of drivers who received the Bandini Trophy before. There are some impressive names on that list – just think of the total amount of championships these people have won! So, I feel very honoured to now be a Bandini winner myself. I had some good moments last year and it’s nice to be recognised for those. Driving the 2016 car on the roads just added to the excitement of this great day.” Valtteri was not the only member of MercedesAMG Petronas Motorsport to be awarded a trophy as Aldo Costa, Engineering Director of MercedesAMG Petronas Motorsport, and Riccardo Musconi, Senior Race Engineer on car #44, received the European Community Award at the event in Brisighella. Andrea Dolfi, Global Technology Manager, Engine Fluids & Motorsport at Petronas Lubricants International (PLI) was also among the honourees, being awarded the prize from the Emilia Romagna Motor Valley panel. PLI has a strong presence in Italy, which grew even stronger in recent weeks with the opening of the company’s new $60 million Global Research & Technology centre in Turin. After the ceremony, the honourees attended the awards gala with around 500 guests.

Classic Success C107 and C126 model series coupés successful on the market: Last year was another exceptionally good year for classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles…will this year be any different?

M

arket research again observes highly positive growth in value of classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Over 2017, the market researchers calculate that the MercedesBenz Classic Index (MBCI) has risen by 8.7 percent, a considerable hike in value under the current market conditions. The MBCI has been published since 2012 by Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) with its offices in London, Great Britain. Classic vehicles from Mercedes-Benz are both sought-after collectors' items and objects of value. The Mercedes-Benz Classic Index, which is similar to a stock market index, describes the market performance by monitoring the results of the global trade in classic Mercedes-Benz models. According to the latest HAGI report, the market prices of classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles have continued to show strong upward growth. With a considerable hike of more than 8.7 percent over the past twelve months, the figure is on a level with the average long-term growth in the value of Mercedes-Benz classic cars (+8.8%). "The prices for good classic Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and thus the esteem in which they are

held, are indeed continuing to post encouraging growth," confirms Patrik Gottwick, responsible at Mercedes-Benz Classic for the ALL TIME STARS vehicle trading platform. "The trend points continuously upwards." A key requirement for high market prices and high esteem is vehicles that are in perfect condition. On account of their age, they have usually been restored – yet the restoration must have been carried out to the highest standards. Great importance is attached to the traceability of all work done, along with documentation of the previous condition. There is a special bonus for restoration using genuine parts in line with original Mercedes-Benz instructions, as happens at the Classic Centres in Fellbach near Stuttgart and in Irvine, California: a classic car in as-new condition, restored in accordance with the original specifications of the former manufacturer, will fetch a very high price on the market. Having climbed to a new high of 206.5 index points in September 2017, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index MBCI fell back again slightly in October in line with seasonal expectations (- 3.1% compared with the previous month). Even so, the

performance for 2017 remains extremely positive: since the start of the year, the MBCI has recorded the highest growth in value measured by HAGI across all brands (+7.6%). Extrapolated to twelve months, the rise of the MBCI shows the previously mentioned hike of 8.7 percent. Growth in value for four classic Mercedes-Benz models HAGI maintains several Mercedes-Benz indexes. Younger collectors' models are grouped in the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index Emerging Classics (MBCI EC). For this index, the market researcher calculated a rise of 4.4 percent in October compared with the same month of the previous year. At approximately 9.8 percent, the increase over the last twelve months is even higher. A positive influence came in October from SLC models of the 107 series as well as from SEC models of the 126 series. According to the market observations of HAGI, a 500 SLC was sold for over 110,000 euros on the private market. In September, two Mercedes-Benz models in particular fetched high prices on the market: the 190 SL (W 121) is currently trading at prices around 200,000 euros. This makes the roadster,

mercedesclub.org.uk

Classic Success Âť 21

manufactured between 1955 and 1963, currently one of the most sought-after classic cars. The market price has almost doubled over the past ten years. Since 2016, it has even enriched the field for the Mille Miglia: it came to light in 2015 that a 190 SL also took part in the original "1,000 miles" race in 1956. The French team of Michel Bianco / Jean Loup Pellecuer, start number 347, finished 121st back then, after a driving time of 16 hours, 6 minutes and 15 seconds. HAGI has recorded a further rise in value for the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet (W 111): examples in top condition are fetching prices around 400,000 euros, while stand-out specimens are even clearly exceeding that mark. The luxurious four-seater cabriolet, built from 1969 until 1971, and its sister models, produced between 1965 and 1971, are firm favourites with collectors worldwide. Patrik Gottwick adds: "It is no exaggeration to say that these cabriolets achieved dream car status from the moment they rolled off the production line, a status they have never lost." HAGI indexes established as international benchmarks The HAGI indexes were launched in January 2009. They exist for various car brands and have established themselves as international benchmarks in the market for classic vehicles. Inaugurated in 2012, the Mercedes-Benz Classic Index (MBCI) launched at a value of ÂŁ100 on 31 December 2011. By October 2017 it had risen to over 200 points. The MBCI currently records the growth in value of 44 classic cars of the brand, 23 of which are estimated by HAGI to be among the historically most important vehicles of all. Established in 2007, the Historic Automobile Group International (HAGI) is an independent research institute for investments and is specialised in rare classic automobiles. The HAGI Top Index is regularly used as a benchmark by media such as the Financial Times, New York Times and the German daily "Die Welt". The goal is to bring transparency to the market and to enable market participants to make sound decisions based on data. HAGI operates a database covering over 100,000 actual transactions. Entries begin on the date a vehicle is produced and are updated on a daily basis. The data come mainly from four sources: private contacts, brand specialists, dealers and auction results. With the growing trend in classic car purchases banking on investments, we expect to see a further growth towards the end of 2018 following HAGI next report.

THE VISION

MERCEDES-MAYBACH A

t "Auto China 2018" in Beijing, Mercedes-Benz is presenting the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury. The design of the crossover, based on an exclusive high-end saloon and an SUV, follows the philosophy of Sensual Purity. The show car combines the comfort and typical strengths of both body styles. These include the raised seating position and the athletic looks. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is conceived as an electric vehicle with four compact permanent-magnet synchronous motors and fully variable all-wheel drive. "The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a totally new archetype of a kind never seen before," says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. "Our concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a saloon to produce an ultra-modern SUV of three-box design," says Wagener. "With sensuality and pure sophistication, we have created a timeless vehicle that underscores the position of Mercedes-Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand." Continuing the Mercedes-

Maybach success story, the concept vehicle not only embodies the Mercedes-Maybach design language, it also reflects the traditional brand values while continuing the successful MercedesMaybach story. True to the principle of creating "the very best from the very best", MercedesMaybach stands for the ultimate in luxury while uniting the perfection of Mercedes-Benz with the exclusivity of Maybach. The show car also merges influences from the Western and Far Eastern hemispheres to deliver an appealing automotive cultural dialogue. For instance, use is made of "Magic Wood", ebony, which is traditional in Chinese furniture design. The same motif is also underlined by the combination of SUV and notchback saloon, which are the most successful body styles not only internationally, but especially on the Chinese market. In the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury, spaciousness and comfort, in combination with the raised seating position, elegant design and finest materials, particularly in the rear, give rise to a luxury experience at the

highest level. The vehicle stands in exemplary manner for the typical Mercedes-Maybach values: traditional craftsmanship, uniqueness and individualisation. The exterior design encapsulates, harmony, with smooth lines, extravagant surfaces with no beads or sharp edges create an image of sporty elegance: the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury has a majestic look. With its balanced proportions, the vehicle has tremendous presence. The front end is accentuated by the distinctive chrome-plated radiator grille with its fine vertical bars in the style of a pinstripe suit. The new grille design celebrated its world premiere in the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, the exclusive coupĂŠ concept car that delighted aficionados and fans of the brand in 2016. It also inspired the latest reinterpretation for the Mercedes-Maybach S Class. In combination with the low-profile front headlamps with three lamp units, the grille dominates the front view of the vehicle while emphasising its brand affiliation. The large air

24 » Mercedes-Maybach

inlets along with the horizontal air inlet with integral chrome blades underline the sportiness of the SUV saloon while lending it a dynamic look. The air inlets are crossed by the brand's typical honeycomb pattern. A continuous trim strip extends from the split bonnet across the roof through to the rear end. Unlike a conventional saloon, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury offers a significantly higher, SUV-typical seating position and therefore a sublime driving experience. This addresses the desire of many customers for a feeling of protection and security – a challenge for the designers. Ultimately, the task was to harmoniously transfer the familiar three-box design – bonnet, passenger compartment and boot – to an SUV-like architecture. This produces an interesting tension between the poles of sportiness and Mercedes-Maybach luxury. The upright C-pillar, long, gently forwardsloping bonnet and compact notchback dominate the sportily elegant side view. The muscular volume of the flank is accentuated by a long wheelbase and short rear overhangs. The overall appearance is rounded off by 24 i nch turbinelook wheels. Truncated running boards in machined aluminium are integrated in the lower door area. They are illuminated in white and bear the Maybach logo. The overall vehicle is accentuated by subtle chrome trim above the running boards as well as in the lower area of the front and rear ends. The electrically extending door handles are flush with the sides. At the rear end, the three-part lamps are reminiscent of the design of the front headlamps. Situated above them is the visually vertically split rear window. Another striking feature is the modelled underride guard with diffuser look. It, too, is permeated by the Maybach pattern from the front end. The interior of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury features an exciting contrast between high-level sportiness and luxurious spaciousness. This show car is the ultimate

mercedesclub.org.uk

embodiment of a luxury dream automobile. The goal of the interior designers was to provide echoes of the series-produced vehicles while, however, transporting them into an unprecedented world of luxury. They created a symbiosis of sportiness, modernity and elegance, giving an idea of coming generations of Mercedes-Maybach models. Exclusive materials with high-grade highlights exude exquisite quality in the interior, thereby underlining the vehicle's superlative luxury. The generous feeling of spaciousness, together with the high-contrast colour compositions, make for a hitherto unattained luxury experience. The colours employed are typical of the brand, such as rosé gold, crystal white and pearl grey. Flowing forms, delicate fabrics and aluminium parts create an exciting contrast between the sportily elegant details of an SUV and the lightness of a saloon. As the Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is intended primarily for chauffeur-driven use, its design is strongly focused on the rear passengers and their well-being. It is in the rear that the feeling of cosy spaciousness is at its most intense. The driver's area and cockpit are reduced to the essentials. Air vents, which reflect the design of the radiator grille, surround the free-standing Widescreen Cockpit with double 12.3 inch displays. The feeling of spaciousness is further enhanced by a light, contrasting bottom part of the instrument panel as well as by the reduced height of the dashboard. Overall, the interior creates an atmosphere of luxurious cosiness that allows the occupants to relax pleasantly. To emphasise the visual lightness, the rosé gold frame of the front seats is open, exposing the white leather to view. The colour/material scheme celebrates the superlative luxury of the Vision Mercedes-Maybach with exquisite materials and breathtaking surfaces. The luxurious lightness of the interior is emphasised by the colours crystal white, finest nappa leather and a sensual shade of brown that

features a light metallic finish on the instrument panel. Gleaming surfaces in polished aluminium generate exciting reflections while mirroring the highlight: the rosé gold-coated seats. The claim to the ultimate in luxury goes hand-in-hand with extreme technical challenges. For instance, the intense Mercedes-Maybach signature red metallic finish is applied by expert hand in several coats. Tradition and modernity are reflected in the form of appealing contrasts. The entire interior is surrounded by a large-area trim level. Dark ebony forms an exciting contrast with the surrounding areas of white leather. Wave-like, flowing lines of light are integrated flush into the wood surfaces, impressively uniting the analogue and digital worlds. The tailored seat upholstery layouts take up the lines of the trim while giving a reinterpretation to the typical diamond shape. The fine perforations are in rosé gold. Thought through down to the smallest detail, crafted with love and affection. As in the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, the especially comfortable seats impress with their adjustment kinematics. Unlike in a conventional saloon, the backrest is adjusted separately while the footwell and seat reference point remain unchanged. The cushion can be adjusted separately, while the seat angle and height adjustment are combined. Extra-soft knee cushions afford protection and comfort. The reclining seats feature a calf support, which is freely adjustable for length and angle. The crystal white nappa leather seats are enhanced by diamond stitching in rosé gold. The wide centre console extends through to the rear. It is equipped with an integral, heated tray with teapot and cups, allowing exquisite tea-drinking enjoyment while on the road. The philosophy of tea plays a key role in bringing body and mind into balance while discovering the path to inner calm and vitality. The tea service is integrated into a sculpted wooden tray made of ebony, known as "Magic Wood". At the press of a button, the handmade service of finest china can be electrically retracted

Mercedes-Maybach Âť 25

into the console under a sliding cover finished in high-gloss black. The Mercedes-Benz user experience, too, represents the definitive embodiment of a luxury dream car. The design language is warmer and brighter, creating a luxurious atmosphere. The car was created entirely in a 3D real-time graphic environment. Like a butler, the Vision MercedesMaybach Ultimate Luxury acts with anticipation, instead of offering long menus and lists. The vehicle plays music to match the current mood, knows the appointment calendar and plans the routes accordingly. In the rear, various flavours of tea and relaxation programmes are on offer, depending on who the rear passenger is.

The familiar ENERGIZING comfort control has been carried over from the S Class. Systems such as massage, fragrancing, light and music are combined, helping to regenerate and improve concentration. This holistic comfort and infotainment system can be individually programmed and adapted for every world market. The highlight of the Mercedes-Benz user experience in the Vision Mercedes Maybach Ultimate Luxury is the comprehensive touch control concept – a combination of touchscreen, touchpad on the centre console and Touch Control buttons in the steering wheel. Alongside the intuitive control

experience, reduced driver distraction is a further advantage. The control concept of the free-standing Widescreen Cockpit comprises three levels with rising information density: home screen, base screen and a submenu. The voice control adjusts to the user's voice and adapts new vogue words or changed use of language. In addition, the system does not employ stereotypical responses, but uses interactive variation. On the aesthetic front, it is based on the traditional Chinese ink painting style with its simplicity, white surfaces and balanced proportions.

26 » AMG GT S Roadster

I

n time for July 2018, Mercedes-AMG is extending its sports car portfolio with the new AMG GT S Roadster as an attractive open-air model. With this latest addition the AMG GT family now has a dozen members: four two-door Coupés, three Roadsters, two customer sports racing cars and three fourdoor Coupés. The basis for the high Driving Performance of the new AMG GT S Roadster is the combination of a lightweight aluminium spaceframe, a V8 biturbo engine, a sevenspeed dual clutch transmission, a rear axle locking differential and a sport suspension with aluminium double wishbone axles. "With the AMG GT S Roadster, our AMG GT family has gained another exceptionally sporty member that combines high driving dynamics with an emotional open-air experience," says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "The new model represents the perfect alternative for the performance-oriented AMG GT Roadster customer." Compared to the AMG GT Roadster, the AMG GT S Roadster is rendered even more dynamic by numerous modifications to the engine, suspension, brakes, design and interior. This positions it between the AMG GT Roadster and the even more powerful AMG GT C Roadster, now providing a choice of three open-top two-seaters.

mercedesclub.org.uk

Muscular power unit for a top speed of over 300 km/h. The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo in the AMG GT S Roadster delivers an output of 384 kW (522 hp) and maximum torque of 670 Nm. This is available over a wide engine speed range from 1900 to 5000 rpm. The eight-cylinder power unit delivers muscular performance in all engine speed ranges, combined with high efficiency for low fuel consumption and emission levels. A sprint from standstill to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.8 seconds. The dynamic power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 308 km/h. The two turbochargers of the V8 are not positioned on the outside of the cylinder banks, but inside the cylinder "V". Advantages: a compact engine design, spontaneous response of the turbochargers and low exhaust emissions thanks to optimal airflow to the nearengine catalysts. The dry sump lubrication also ensures the oil supply even with high lateral forces and allows the engine to be installed lower, thus moving the centre of gravity closer to the road and forming the basis for high lateral acceleration. Power transfer is based on the combination of a front mid-engine and the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7G sport transmission in a transaxle arrangement, combined with

a torsionally rigid torque tube. Thanks to the wide gear ratio spread, the decidedly high torque of the V8 biturbo engine can be used to optimum effect. The weight distribution is also ideal for optimum driving dynamics at 47 (front) and 53 (rear) percent. The AMG GT S Roadster is equipped with the AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive damping adjustment as standard. This fully automatic, electronically controlled system adjusts the damping at each wheel to the current requirements. Using a switch in the centre console or by selecting the drive mode, the driver is able to choose between the different damping characteristic maps "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport+", and can thereby individually influence the driving experience.

Large dimensions: the AMG highperformance composite braking system The AMG high-performance composite brake system is adapted to the enhanced performance of the AMG GT S Roadster. The front axle features composite brake discs measuring 390 x 36 mm with 6-piston fixed callipers, with composite brake discs measuring 360 x 26 mm and single-piston fixed callipers at the rear. The brake callipers are painted in red with "AMG" lettering.

AMG GT S Roadster Âť 27

mercedesclub.org.uk

There is also the option of the AMG highperformance ceramic composite braking system with brake discs in size 402 x 39 mm at the front axle and 360 x 32 mm at the rear, together with specially painted brake callipers with "AMG Carbon Ceramic" lettering. Exceptionally short stopping distances, a precise pressure point and outstanding resistance to fading even under extreme operating conditions - the AMG highperformance ceramic composite braking system offers motorsport-like braking performance and weighs around 40 percent less than with conventional composite brake discs.

Intelligent lightweight construction with high proportion of aluminium For the body of the GT S, Mercedes-AMG has opted for an intelligent and particularly lightweight mix of materials with a high proportion of aluminium. The spaceframe and exterior parts are of aluminium, and the boot lid too is particularly light in weight thanks to an innovative composite material. The loadbearing structure is of SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound). These high-tech plastics excel with their lightweight design, high strength and outstanding surface quality. The innovative materials were developed by the MercedesBenz TEC factory, and brought to production maturity together with the AMG specialists in Affalterbach. The extremely lightweight front deck made of magnesium reduces the inertia ahead of the front axle, improving the agility of the Roadster.

Weight-optimised: the fabric soft top The three-layered fabric soft top is supported by a magnesium/steel/aluminium structure of low weight, which helps to keep the vehicle's centre of gravity low. Additional roll-over protection is provided by an integrated aluminium crossmember, while the inserted acoustic mat improves noise comfort.

Authentic sports car experience embodying sensual purity From the expressive AMG radiator grille to the long bonnet and the muscular tail end, the two-seater guarantees a pure sports car experience even when stationary. The flat front section and forward-sloping radiator grille make the Roadster appear to hug the road. At the same time this shape lowers the vehicle's back-pressure point, enhancing the

flow of cooling air and the car's aerodynamic performance. The front apron in jet wing design emphasises the car's width, making it sit flatter on the road. The large outer air inlets guarantee the supply of cooling air to the engine. The LED High Performance headlamps offer more safety at night and an unmistakably sporty and distinctive look. Thanks to LED technology, they illuminate the road more effectively than conventional headlamps – with lower energy consumption. Viewed from the side, the arched roof line (when the soft top is closed) and the frameless doors are eye-catching features. The surfaces and lines of the side wall flow into the tail end with a dramatic tapered effect. The long bonnet with its pronounced powerdomes, the greenhouse which has been moved far back, the large wheels and broad tail end also contribute to the distinctive looks. As standard the AMG GT S Roadster is shod with mixed tyres on 19-inch rims at the front and 20-inch rims at the rear.

AIRPANEL active air management system The active air regulation system AIRPANEL included as standard is a particular technical highlight. Vertical louvres at the bottom of the front apron are opened and closed electronically by means of an electric motor in around one second to guarantee the required amount of

cooling. Constantly achieving the ideal position calls for highly intelligent and fast control. During normal driving with no increased cooling demand, the louvres are closed for reduced drag and the air is directed at the underbody. This improves the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicles. Only when certain components reach predefined temperatures and the air demand is particularly high do the louvres open to allow the maximum cooling air flow to the heat exchangers. As another active aerodynamic component the Roadster features an extendable rear spoiler. This reduces lift at the rear axle at higher speeds. With its broad shoulders and expressive tail light graphics, the rear end enhances the emotional overall appearance. The interior design echoes the design lines of the exterior. The dashboard places a firm emphasis on width, creating an impression of a powerful wing. Thanks to the high beltlines, concave door panelling, a dynamic, rising centre console and the low seating position, the driver is integrated into the cockpit and feels fully attuned to the Roadster. The sports seats, the performance steering wheel and the instrument cluster also demonstrate outstanding precision and high-quality materials. The sport seats are upholstered in black ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre as standard. Numerous other materials and colours are also optionally available.

The stepless system controls the damping characteristics individually for each wheel as it interacts with the engine, transmission and steering properties – to suit the driving situation, speed and condition of the road surface. The individual suspension setup can be determined in the three stages "Sport", "Sport+" and "Comfort" via the DYNAMIC SELECT switch. 3. The MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with ULTRA RANGE Highbeam* feature 84 individually controllable LEDs in each headlamp. These allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation. New functions in comparison to the standardfit LED Intelligent Light System (19 LEDs per headlamp) are the junction light, roundabout light, city light and adverse weather light. When no other road user is detected, the road ahead is straight and the vehicle speed is above 40 km/h, ULTRA RANGE Highbeam is switched on automatically. This produces the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beam headlamps only falling below the reference value of 1 lux after a distance of more than 650 metres. 4. The fully-digital Instrument Display* comprises a 12.3-inch, high-resolution instrument cluster. The cutting-edge screen design offers the three very different display styles "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive". The styles can be switched easily according to personal preference or to suit the selected interior. 5. ENERGIZING comfort control* links various comfort systems in the vehicle. It systematically uses the functions of the air conditioning system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heating, ventilation), as well as lighting and musical moods, to create a specific wellness set-up tailored to the customer's preferences.

With four body variants, three output levels and two drive system layouts, the C-Class is the most versatile and most successful model series from Mercedes AMG. Comprehensive measures make the entry-level models in the guise of the C 43 4MATIC Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet even more attractive. The AMG radiator grille in a twin-louvre design, the powerfully sculpted front apron and the new rear apron with round twin tailpipe trim elements visibly enhance the new C 43 models and give them an even more distinct positioning. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now delivers 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and the rear-biased all-wheel drive system AMG Performance 4MATIC, this powerful engine combines agile driving dynamics with exceptional comfort on long journeys. The AMG styling package adds even sportier highlights: the more expressive front splitter, standard-fit spoiler lip, broader side skirt inserts and flics in the rear bumper are finished in high-gloss black. The further equipment options include the Carbon-Fibre package, in which the exterior-mirror housings and the spoiler lip on the boot lid, or in the case of the Estate the roof spoiler, are finished in black visible carbon fibre. The Night package comprises black elements, such as the trim on the front apron and the tailpipe trim.

years ago, Daimler-Benz acquired a majority in Auto Union. In April 1958 the then Daimler-Benz AG acquired a majority in Auto Union GmbH. All the remaining shares followed on 31 December 1959. By 1960, Auto Union was therefore a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz. Important moves for the future were made in the period up to 1 January 1965, when Volkswagen acquired a majority in Auto Union from Daimler-Benz: From 1961, the major Mercedes-Benz plant in Düsseldorf was constructed on a site previously operated by Auto Union. Mercedes-Benz also made important contributions to the development of the Audi models of the 1960s. 60 years ago the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG held four meetings to deliberate on an initiative by major shareholder Friedrich Flick: in early 1958 he proposed a merger between Daimler-Benz AG and Auto Union GmbH. The industrialist reckoned that the model ranges of the two companies would complement each other. This would enable synergies to be used for future development work. At that time Flick owned a shareholding of around 40 per cent in each of the two companies. On 6 March 1958 the Board of Management in Stuttgart finally decided to take over a majority of the Ingolstadt-based company with the four rings as its trademark. On 1 April 1958 the Supervisory Board of Daimler-Benz AG approved the acquisition of just under 88 per cent of the authorised share capital of Auto Union GmbH. The transaction was retrospective to the beginning of 1958. Before the Second World War Auto Union AG, founded in Chemnitz in 1932, was one of the major competitors of Mercedes-Benz with its Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer brands. This rivalry also manifested itself in motor sport, where the Silver Arrows from Stuttgart competed against the racing cars of Auto Union. Following the reincorporation of Auto Union GmbH in Ingolstadt in 1949, the only vehicles in production were the two-stroke models under the DKW brand and, for a few years, the likewise two-stroke Auto Union 1000 (1958 to August 1963). On 14 April 1958, the first joint Board of

The agenda included two important from Düsseldorf to Ingolstadt on 31 May 1961, this questions concerning the technical direction for made fundamental changes possible. the future. For example, the representatives of In 1961 Daimler-Benz AG took out a lease on Daimler-Benz AG had their doubts whether the the location, which had been constructed on a three-cylinder two-stroke engines of DKW would former Rheinmetall-Borsig production site after have much of a chance in the passenger car the Second World War. In 1962 Auto Union sold four-cylinder four-stroke engine. Ingolstadt was not the Düsseldorf plant to Industriemotoren GmbH, a willing to dispense with the two-stroke engine at subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG. once, however. At the end of April 1958, the Daimler-Benz Board of Management members Professor Fritz Nallinger and Wilhelm Künkele travelled to Düsseldorf to begin coordinating the activities of the two companies. In August 1958 Hanns-Martin Schleyer and senior engineer Arthur Mischke were appointed to manage the liaison between Daimler-Benz AG and Auto Union. And on 21 December 1959 Daimler-Benz made an agreement to acquire the remaining shares of the Ingolstadt company on 31 December 1959. From 1960, Auto Union therefore became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG. Birth of the MercedesBenz plant in Düsseldorf In July 1958 the foundation stone was laid for a completely new Auto Union plant in Ingolstadt. This went into operation in 1959. This immediately opened up capacities that were highly attractive to Mercedes-Benz at Cross section of “Medium pressure engine” of the first Audi, 1965

This firmly enshrined the Düsseldorf plant in the company’s production network. Over the years it was continuously expanded to reach the outstanding position it holds today. In recent years alone, Daimler has invested around 300 million euros in the location. Today around 6,600 employees work in Daimler AG’s largest worldwide van plant in Düsseldorf. It is the lead plant for worldwide production of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. In early March 2018, the production line for the latest-generation Sprinter went into operation in Düsseldorf. Audi models with Mercedes-Benz genes While Düsseldorf was being established as the lead plant for the Mercedes-Benz van division, the aim was also to modernise the production of Auto Union now concentrated in Ingolstadt. The financial resources required for this were considerable: between 1959 and 1964, more than 340 million German marks were invested at Auto Union in addition to the proceeds from the sale of the Düsseldorf plant to Daimler-Benz AG. Yet development at the company progressed only slowly. This is why Daimler-Benz dispatched one of its most capable engineers to Ingolstadt on 8 October 1963: Ludwig Kraus, head of design in the Mercedes-Benz pre-development

ˆ

department. Kraus had been designing marine diesel engines since the late 1930s, played a major role in the design of the 1.7-litre OM 636 diesel engine after 1945, and in the early 1950s was head of design for the successful Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Formula 1 racing car and the 300 SLR (W 196 S) racing sports car. Now his mission was to accelerate changes at Auto Union. Kraus had something of a home advantage, as he had gone to school and obtained his higher school leaving certificate in Ingolstadt. His arrival was to have far-reaching consequences. This is because Ludwig Kraus not only brought a team of highly motivated young Daimler-Benz technicians with him to Ingolstadt, but also a new, almost fully developed fourcylinder engine with the in-house designation M 118 and the original code name “Mexico”. Its high compression ratio (1:11.2) and the intense swirling effect on the intake mixture of helical intake ducts led to a low fuel consumption. It was also low in vibrations, as all the tests at the time confirmed. As a so-called medium-pressure engine, this Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder unit had its 1965 debut in the new Auto Union Audi Premiere, also known internally as the F103. This vehicle was the first post-war passenger car by Auto Union to

ˆ

feature a four-stroke engine, and also the first postwar model under the Audi brand. Moreover, subsequent vehicle developments at Auto Union and its Audi brand also bore the distinct signature of Mercedes-Benz. This is because Ludwig Kraus remained in Ingolstadt as Technical Director when Daimler-Benz AG sold its majority in Auto Union to the Volkswagen group on 1 January 1965. From 1966 the company was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Volkswagen. Kraus and the other former Mercedes-Benz engineers were familiar with the prototype development work carried out since 1953 for the possible Mercedes-Benz medium-class model series W 122 and W 119. These had a front section reminiscent of the W 113-series SL sports cars, modern body lines with a low beltline and a dynamic rear end design. It is therefore not surprising that the body of the first Audi 100 developed at Auto Union shares features with the W 119. This model too was equipped with the fourcylinder medium pressure engine. Kraus initially worked on the medium class car in secret, though it finally celebrated its premiere in 1968 – and brought the company its great leap forward into the future. The Audi 80 (1972) and Audi 50 (1974) were also designed under the aegis of Kraus

HARRY’S W202 AND HIS LOVE AFFAIR WITH MERCEDES-BENZ “I've always been a lover of all things cars and engineering, with my mum constantly buying me toy cars, vans and trucks” beams Harry, as he explains his love affair with cars, Mercedes and his W202 to the Mercedes-Benz Owners (MBO).

H

arry’s admiration of the Mercedes brand, first started back in the mid 90's, when he was just 11 years old. His father became one of the first purchasers in the UK of a Mercedes Sprinter (Supplied by SMAC Continental in Southend). This hyacinth blue Sprinter 312D LWB also had Bull bars, Air conditioning, electric windows, central locking and lots more. The Sprinter became the only vehicle out of every car or van the family ever owned that never had an issue. Even after a staggering 240,000 miles in three years. “That reliability” Harry pointed out. Coupled with the growl, the characteristic sound of the five cylinder engine, cemented his love and respect, for all things Mercedes-Benz. in 1999 his parents bought a C180 (W202) Elegance in Green Black. where Harry fell in love with the colour which was to become, his colour of choice. Harry was quick to explain that “the 1.8 litre 4 pot was not fast, but smooth it was”. Later on in his teens, “before I could afford to even think of insuring an Mercedes, my friend Ghazi borrowed his cousin's W202 C200 Sport for

a long trip to see some friends of ours. I remember the smooth drive, that it had no squeaks or rattles. It wasn't particularly fast but it was smooth and peaceful, and handled very well too...a blend of comfort and handling... Perfect!” This was one of those moments where he had a vision, a vision of owning a W202 Mercedes-Benz of his own. After doing some research, he decided upon a W202 C250 Turbodiesel, despite the rust issues that came up on his research travels through the MBO forum www.forums.mercedesclub.org.uk. Fast forward to 2013 and a good friend of his Manoj, had recently purchased a W202 C250 Turbodiesel on a P plate. Manoj also happened to work with him, and he remembered seeing the car arrive in the staff car park. “It was stunning and my friend is one of those owners that usually buys a car, run it a while and sells it on” Harry felt an opportunity was brewing, but was the car right? I wanted a Pre facelift W202 C250 Turbodiesel, in Green Black (189), Sport trim level, Mille Miglia interior, cruise control, sunroof but no air conditioning...so quite specific but I knew this would be a keeper if I ever found one in that trim level”. Despite falling in love with his friends car straight away, he had to convince him to sell it. I told him "You've got a week...I want this car by next Monday... no buts!". Despite his protests of a week being insufficient time to find another motor. The evening of Monday 14th October, the car was his. Harrys first long term, in for the long haul, Mercedes Benz! Once purchased, the work began. The W202 had 150k on the clock, 2 owners, and all the extras Harry wanted, the colour, sport specification, no air con but a sun roof, carbon fibre bits, AMG 15's, the lot. It had no service history although he had been reliably informed that the previous keeper was a mechanic and had taken care of the car. Harrys plan was to keep it as stock as possible, with a few modifications. Have a staggered set of 16's or 17's, a set of factory fit Xenons to help him see better at night, as most of his homeward commute is at night. Many £'s on maintenance and just over 4 years labour of love later, here we are! So far the car has had a resprayed, fitted US spec front indicator lamps with LED marker light modification, factory Xenons fitted with headlamp wash (Thank to members from MBO and 'The Other Side' for their advice and help). Staggered 16' W202 Sport alloys and the rest has mainly been preventative maintenance. Engine wise it’s still the 250 “though you can’t have enough power” states Harry. The car has only let Harry down once but that was due to a faulty part being supplied to his trusted Independent Mercedes-Benz Specialist. Future plans are a bare metal respray, genuine Mercedes exhaust, and that's apparently it!!!

“I love my W202 to bits and she's not going anywhere just yet...I aim to get her to 300k!” Harry wishes to send some big thanks to his mum for her support and tolerating his various car related issues. Jamie and Terry at Wayne Gates Mercedes-Benz in Harrow who've been instrumental in keeping his W202 on the road. Jon and Jag at Mercedes-Benz Loughton who always have time to help me with EPC and part needs as well as having a genuine interest in my W202. John and Marius at K1 in Ilford for their help with tracking and tyres and Darren Pullen (www.hyperglosspvd.co.uk) for his absolutely superb workmanship in detail valeting his W202 for the photos in this feature. S-Class Safety » 35

T

A BRIEF HISTORY OF VEHICLE SAFETY WITH THE S-CLASS

his history of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a history of vehicle safety at the highest level. A tradition of outstanding innovations which have debuted in the S-Class have made these premium cars from Stuttgart pioneers for new solutions and a worldwide benchmark in vehicle safety. Thus beyond their own vehicles, Daimler continually establish standards in active, passive and integrated safety for the entire automotive industry. The examples range from the safety body in the 1959 “tailfin” (model series W 111) to the antilock braking system introduced in the S-Class (model series W 116) in 1978, the air bag (1981 premiere in the S-Class W/V 126 model series), and the Mercedes-Benz integral safety concept. This trend-setting concept was unveiled in 2005 in the S-Class (model series W/V 221) under the name PRO-SAFE™. The integral safety concept also includes the PRE-SAFE® preventive safety system, which was introduced in the S-Class W/V 220 model series in 2002. The discovery of safety In the 1950s and 1960s, engineers and researchers laid the foundation for critical safety innovations of the coming years. At that time, there was a growing understanding and refinement of the principle of vehicle safety. For example, a conscious distinction was made between passive and active safety with the appropriate sub-speciality fields of study: whereas active safety with its aspects of driving safety, conditional

safety and operational safety had always played an important role for engineers since the invention of the car, the far-reaching significance of passive safety was fully understood in the mid-20th century. One of the first highlights in series production was the premiere of the safety body in the “tailfin” (W 111) in 1959. The safety body was developed by the mastermind of vehicle safety, Béla Barényi, who had been employed at Daimler-Benz since 1939. Amongst his most important innovations was the door lock with securing pin, which was first presented in 1951. Many of his ideas were so ahead of their time that some did not make it into series production until long after Barényi had left active service, for example, the recessed windscreen wiper when in standby mode, which was introduced in the W/V 126 model series of the S-Class in 1979. Barényi’s safety body is based on the concept of a shape-stable passenger cell with specific deformable crumple zones at the front and rear to dissipate kinetic energy in the event of a collision. The “tailfin” premium vehicles thus heralded the first high point of vehicle safety research at Mercedes-Benz, and the safety body soon became the international standard for passive safety in the global car design industry. Vehicle safety as an integral theme The aspiration for even greater vehicle safety led to innovations which affected all areas of the car. Amongst other things, the Mercedes-Benz

engineers established padded structures in the interior, improved the safety of the body structure with the help of increasingly sophisticated crash tests and optimised the conditional safety with improved ergonomics. The entire chassis was also further improved in terms of safety. For example, Mercedes-Benz introduced disc brakes on all four wheels in 1961. The dual-circuit braking system followed in 1963. The company took a decisive step into the future of vehicle safety with the W 116 model series of the S-Class, which had its first public showing in 1972. This premium Saloon was characterised amongst other things by improved crash performance and extreme comfort for optimal conditional safety, plus countless detailed solutions for passive and active safety. Its front suspension with a zero scrub radius and progressive anti-dive control was an important contribution to active safety, but it also served as the basis for a further epic application: it was in the W 116 model series that the ABS anti-lock braking system made its series debut in 1978. This system ensured that the vehicle was still able to be steered even when the brakes were fully applied and it also led to the shortening of the braking distance, particularly on wet roads. It took over 20 years for ABS to be developed from the initial idea to series deployment: the first patent for the technology was filed back in 1953 by Dr. Hans Scherenberg, chief developer of the company from 1966 to 1977.

Rally Rewind: Mercedes win toughest rally One-two for Mercedes-Benz 280E in the “London–Sydney”: Rally tour half-way round the world with the W123

T

he world’s toughest rally was won by two Mercedes-Benz upper midrange saloons. Andrew Cowan and his team took first place in the Singapore Airlines London–Sydney Rally driving a 280 E (W 123) – now a sought-after modern classic – and Anthony (Tony) Fowkes and his crew came in second, also in a 280 E. There were six 280 E rally cars in all at the start, supervised by Erich Waxenberger and given works back-up, and four of them achieved top ten places at the finish. The cars were basically the standard saloon models which had been adapted with special wheels and chassis modifications and given tough sand plates instead of bumpers. In addition to the network of service bases along the route, a number of support vehicles (W 123 and Unimog) were also deployed along the way. On 28 September 1977 the Mercedes star shone at its brightest outside the Sydney Opera House: Andrew Cowan and Tony Fowkes and their teams had won the London–Sydney marathon, both driving Mercedes-Benz 280 E (W 123) saloon cars. Two more of the Mercedes-Benz upper mid-range vehicles were among the top ten

finishers. Alfred Kling and his team achieved sixth place with their Mercedes-Benz 280 E and Herbert Kleint’s crew came in eighth in a similar vehicle. For the 123 model series, the rally was convincing proof both of the cars’ sporting endurance and performance and their comfort and reliability. This was a point emphasised by the Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG at the time, Dr Joachim Zahn, at the victory celebration in Stuttgart in 1977. It is these qualities that now make the 123 model series a soughtafter modern Mercedes-Benz classic. The 123 series was launched in 1976 and remained in production until the beginning of 1986. It was available as a saloon (W 123), a coupé (C 123) and an estate (S 123), and also as a chassis base for special bodies.

From opera house to opera house The start of the marathon 40 years ago was the overture to an event of operatic proportions: 69 cars set off from Covent Garden Opera House in London on 14 August 1977 to compete in the toughest rally in the world, with the teams needing to cover well over 30,000 kilometres across

three continents in 30 days and nights. Three sea crossings were also on the agenda. The finish line of the 1977 Singapore Airlines London–Sydney Rally was situated at another famous music venue on the opposite side of the world: the Sydney Opera House in all its architectural splendour. This rally revisited the concept of the first London–Sydney Marathon, which was held in 1968 and also won by Andrew Cowan, but the second incarnation of the rally, organised by the British entrepreneur Wylton Dickson, was significantly longer and even more demanding than the first. It was publicised in 1976 as “the longest car rally in history”. A total of six teams took part in the rally in Mercedes-Benz 280 E saloons. They were not officially registered as works teams but were given substantial support from the manufacturers under the direction of engineer Erich Waxenberger. • Car number 27: Herbert Kleint, Günter Klapproth, Harry Vormbruck (Herbert Kleint, private entry) • Car number 33: Andrew Cowan, Colin Malkin, Michael Joan Broad (Rank Organisation team)

Meticulous preparation In 1977, Mercedes-Benz' major successes with near-standard works rally cars lay some time in the past. Nevertheless, Erich Waxenberger followed the recipe for those bygone successes characterised by the winning tail-fin saloons and standard production SL models. Eight different Mercedes-Benz test departments were involved in readying the 280 E for rally use (including bodyshell, brakes, engines and overall vehicle) as well as central customer services. The saloons were fitted with new wheels (15inch), plus sport shock absorbers and so-called tropical springs – both of which were available as optional equipment items. These measures combined to raise the cars’ ground clearance by 35 millimetres. Then, after test drives on the British Army training grounds in Bagshot, it was also decided to reinforce the upper and lower

mercedesclub.org.uk

sections of the semi-trailing arms. In place of the standard gearbox, the rally cars were fitted with the four-speed manual gearbox from the V8 engine used in the S-Class (W116) of the time. A striking addition was the robust sand plate mounted at the front in place of conventional bumpers. In order to facilitate servicing and the supply of replacement parts, both British teams drove left-hand-drive vehicles. Even the quality of the fuel supplied along the route was factored into the planning: as the octane rating of the available fuel was liable to be as low as 82 RON, the vehicles' ignition was specially adapted. The drivers also carried a canister of octane improver with them, with an auxiliary fuel tank in the vehicle allowing high-octane fuel to be mixed into the local petrol. Tony Fowkes described his personal equipment in an interview with the weekly magazine India Today in September 1977: along with spare parts for the car, other essential items included malaria drugs, insect repellent, water purification tablets and toilet paper – as well as fruit and Kendal Mint Cake.

Service network The rolling support points implemented by Mercedes-Benz covered the entire route of the rally: the Stuttgart-based brand set up bases in Milan, Trieste, Veria, Lamia, Athens, Istanbul,

Ankara, Kayserie, Mus, Van, Tabris, Teheran, Yazd, Tabas, Fariman, Kandahar, Kabul, Lahore, Delhi, Ajmer, Baroda, Bombay, Belgaum, Bangalore, Madras, Penang, Singapore, Perth, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne. Additional back-up was provided by support vehicles accompanying the rally. Mercedes-Benz provided a 280 E as a service vehicle from Persia to India, driven by Erich Waxenberger and Joachim Tilgner. In Australia, where the rally had to cover long desert stages, Mercedes-Benz brought in a Unimog. At the victory party, Daimler AG Chairman Zahn highlighted the partnership and collaboration the drivers had enjoyed from the global Mercedes-Benz network during the rally and beyond. He underlined the point that the experiences gained from the rally could provide valuable information to feed into series production development at Mercedes-Benz. For the Stuttgart brand the London–S ydney success story marked the beginning of a new era of rally involvement, the highlights of which included successes with various SLC Coupés of the C 107 model series in South America and Africa from 1978 to 1980. The original winning car from 1977 is on permanent display at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. It is part of "Legend Room 7: Silver Arrows - Races and Records".

46 » Smart Disco

S

mart has revolutionised urban mobility and pioneered innovative services that stand for joie de vivre in the city. The same now goes for night-life, too: with the smart mobile disco, the brand has developed an unusual workstation for DJs – with DJ booth, mixer console, fog machine and various light effects. The show car was created by product designer Konstantin Grcic. JBL, smart's long-standing audio partner, provided the professional sound equipment. The unusual smart was one of the highlights at the preview of "Night Fever. Designing Club Culture 1960 – Today" at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein on 16 March. The exhibition will run until 9 September 2018. "The smart mobile disco is a great symbol of the smart brand's links with club culture – a scene that draws people together, forges bonds and brings joy," says smart boss Dr Annette Winkler. "The many different facets of club culture all embrace a departure from given norms, a different way of looking at things and the courage to try out something new. This is what links the club culture

mercedesclub.org.uk

with smart. Visionary thinking and a passion to keep questioning the status quo encapsulate smart's aims and its essential attitude." The smart mobile disco is based on a smart EQ fortwo (combined power consumption: 13.0-12.9 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km[i]). The interior now accommodates the equipment for operating the lifting platform on which the DJ's booth is installed. The booth can be raised and is fitted out with various items of equipment, including a mixer console and gooseneck microphone. Laminated side supports stabilise the smart mobile disco when in use for deejaying. A fog machine located behind the radiator grille blows smoke onto the dance floor. A host of different light effects are on board to conjure up the ultimate disco fever: the smart is fitted with LED headlamps, which project an animated light show onto the dance floor. A stroboscope inside the vehicle sets the smart flashing at the push of a button. There is an LED matrix on either side of the boom, and a spotlight which can be turned in any direction is also part of the show. The smart mobile disco's alloy wheels are back-lit, and the show

car’s underbody is also illuminated. Back in 2015, smart and JBL produced arguably the world's smallest mobile concert location in the guise of the smart forgigs study. The smart mobile disco is a one-off model and not for sale. But with the JBL sound system a unique sound experience is possible in all new-generation smarts. The JBL sound system develops impressive sound volume and incorporates a 6 channel DSP amplifier (240 watts) in the fortwo and an 8 channel DSP amplifier (320 watts) on board the forfour. A total of eight (fortwo) or twelve (forfour) high-performance loudspeakers provide for outstanding sound quality: one broadband centre loudspeaker, two tweeters in the mirror triangle, two lower mid-range speakers in the doors (on the forfour additionally in the rear doors), two broadband rear-fill loudspeakers and in the fortwo a removable woofer on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment. The woofer is simple to remove without needing tools, should more space be required in the luggage compartment.
