Dear Mater Dei Family, Greetings of Honor, Glory, and Love from the corner of Bristol and Edinger! As of press time, we are nearing the end of the 2021-22 school year. Our theme this year is “Healing and Hope,” and we commend our students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni for their constant support and resiliency as we continue to emerge from the challenges of the past two years. This issue’s cover story (page 20) features our entire campus community at prayer during our Ash Wednesday Mass in the Grotto. After traversing the ups and downs of rules for large group gatherings, it was truly a moment of hope to come together in a place that is so special to us all especially on a sunny, 85-degree day. Just a month prior on February 1, Mr. Michael Brennan joined us as our new president Student reporters from The Scarlet Scroll sat down with Mr. Brennan in his first weeks in office – see page 4. On pages 4 and 5, we spotlight two new updates to campus – our new “recharge room” located in the library and the updated ASB Center. Recharge rooms began popping up in unused hospital spaces during the pandemic and we are excited to have our own on campus. After years of planning and fundraising, it was truly a joy to officially open the much-needed addition to the ASB Center in October 2021. We hope to hold an official blessing and welcome reception for all of those who made this addition possible. Stay tuned! And speaking of fundraising, see pages 7 to 17 for the 20202021 Donor Impact Report and Honor Roll of Donors. We put forth many campaigns and initiatives to support our students, faculty, and staff as we continued to navigate the obstacles presented by COVID-19. Thank you to our generous benefactors for the incredible impact you had in helping sustain our school through these uncertain times. The volume of support and incredible number of returning and new donors to Mater Dei was staggering as evidenced by nine full pages of names. Each of you made a difference and we deeply value your support. What else does this issue have in store for you? Starting on page 24, enjoy reading about our zoology program, accomplishments in the arts and athletics, learn something new about some of our distinguished faculty, and of course read updates and heartwarming stories from our alumni across the globe. No matter where you are in the world, know that we hold all members of the Mater Dei family in our daily intentions and pray that you and yours are well and happy. Gratefully, Michael Brennan Frances Clare President Principal

MATER DEI WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT MR. MICHAEL BRENNAN provided him with a strong moral foundation especially in an educational leadership role.

By: Kathleen Khorn ‘23, Copy Chief Scarlet Scroll New to the Mater Dei community is president Michael P. Brennan. Brennan, who previously served as principal of Servite High School and president of Saint Anthony’s in Long Beach, started his educational career with Anaheim Union School District. Brennan worked a variety of positions from classroom teacher to assistant principal and principal at various schools. Brennan is a Catholic convert meaning he was not born into the Catholic church. Over the course of his conversion journey, he met three key figures (two priests and one brother) that allowed him to explore the faith. It was these key figures that led him to understanding his unique perspective on education. “[Before Servite], I barely knew what Catholicism was and these three men took me under their wing. They taught me the difference between education and formation,” Brennan said. Brennan’s diverse upbringing allowed him to grow accustomed to caring for children of all socio-economic backgrounds and home lives. Brennan’s mother created a loving environment open to all. It was this home that

“If there was a kid who was struggling with a real severe problem [that] was drugs, alcohol or different things, they were at my house with my mom [who] was mothering them and loving them up. [She] was just a very loving, kind person,” Brennan said. Brennan uses his faith as a foundation to guide him through especially difficult times. As the COVID-19 pandemic progressed, expectations for students were adjusted especially with the introduction of online and hybrid classes. Over the few months Brennan has served the Mater Dei campus, he has stressed the importance of love for the student body all while keeping standards for students high. “Love is holding people accountable. Because that’s how people grow and mature. It’s all based on a foundation of love,” Brennan said. To Brennan, leading Mater Dei is to live out the school’s core principles of Honor, Glory, and Love as a guiding force.

“I decide to live my life with honor, glory, and love because that is what Mater Dei stands for. [Administration’s] job is to help [students] choose to live their lives like that too,” Brennan said.

RECHARGE ROOM OFFERS ON CAMPUS RELAXATION SPACE

Across the country businesses, schools, and hospitals have begun to transform underused spaces and areas into relaxation hubs or “recharge rooms” offering places for employees or students to rest, reset, and recharge during the day. Many of these spaces provide immersive nature environments complete with music, scent, lighting, sound, cozy seating, tranquil images, and even abundant greenery. During the COVID-19 pandemic, unused rooms at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City were transformed into spaces where health care workers could recharge after grueling shifts. According to an article published on medicalbag.org in January 2021, workers who used the rooms reported a 60% reduction in stress after just 15 minutes. In March 2022, Mater Dei was excited to open its first recharge room in the school’s library, an optimal place due to its central 4

location on campus and easily accessible, available space. The space offers three relaxation loungers equipped with a massage feature and weighted blankets. The dark gray walls and opaque window treatment offer a serene, quiet escape complete with aromatherapy and calming music/white noise. The room also offers a unique chair for patrons who don’t wish to lie down. Dr. Kathleen Montemagni, Executive Director of the Center for Learning, shared how Mater Dei’s recharge room became a reality. “Knowing that our students returning to campus would also be dealing with a level of anxiety and trauma higher than ever before, they needed and deserved a place to regroup, decompress, and recharge. In addition, a rising number of students experiencing concussions and other medical conditions also needed a quiet space to be away from screens, lights, and noise,” she said. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use the space by checking in with the library staff and checking in their phones or other devices which are not permitted in the recharge room. “We are still waiting on a living wall and monitoring system, but the feedback on the room so far has been great, and the students really appreciate the space. Our counselors and CHOC Psychology team are working to add other rooms on campus. It would be great to have something similar in our faculty lounge,” said Montemagni. Many thanks to the generous benefactors who supported the creation of this special space on campus!

ASB CENTER GETS NEW ADDITION

supporting over 400 student leaders who plan, organize, and facilitate over 150 activities and events for the entire school throughout the year. And perhaps the most important aspect of the new space is the school’s first-ever leadership classroom (where we offer four UC-approved elective courses in leadership) and student workspace. What a blessing this addition has been to ASB!

In the early 1990s, Mater Dei embarked on a comprehensive capital campaign to revitalize our campus to commemorate the school’s 50th anniversary in 2000. The LeVecke Center, ASB Center, and the Lee Family Chapel and Campus Ministry Center were once a dream. Over 20 years later, we look back with gratitude for the permanent home these buildings have provided to vital studentcentered programs and services especially our ASB (Associated Student Body) leadership program. In the fall, construction on a much-needed addition to the ASB Center was finally complete. The existing footprint was expanded six feet on the east and north sides. A formal welcome space complete with digital bulletin boards greets visitors when they walk in. Our activities team was very excited for the increase in storage – a vital component to

“This is exactly what we needed. We are so grateful to all the generous benefactors who believed in this project. Our students absolutely love having a permanent classroom on campus. As we continue to resume normalcy, we deeply value having a space to plan and collaborate as a team,” said Diana Neustadt, Executive Director of Student Activities. 5

MONARCHS MAKING THEIR MARK IN SPORTS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Congratulations to Giancarla “Gia” Trevisan ‘11, Bryce Young ‘20, Stanley Johnson ‘14, Carlo Valdes ‘08, Katie Lou Samuelson ‘15, and Ryan McMahon ‘13 for their incredible accomplishments in their respective sports. Gia Trevisan ‘11 Last summer, Gia competed as part of Italy's 4x400-meter relay team. As the daughter of Italian immigrants, Gia obtained her Italian citizenship in 2017 making her eligible to compete with Team Italy. During her years as a Monarch, Gia was a standout athlete making great contributions to the soccer and track and field programs. After Mater Dei, Gia continued her athletic career with the track and field team at the University of Arizona. Outside of her own training and competitions on the world stage, Gia has an online coaching and nutrition business called RunWithGia. Bryce Young ‘20 In December 2021, Bryce was awarded the Heisman Trophy making him the Crimson Tide’s fourth winner. He is the third for Mater Dei following John Huarte ‘61 in 1964 and Matt Leinart ‘01 in 2004. Heisman Lane has been updated with Bryce’s name and we will welcome him home to officially celebrate on campus with a special event in late May. Stay tuned to our social media channels for updates. Stanley Johnson ‘14 In January, the Los Angeles Lakers officially announced the signing of Stanley Johnson after he was initially called up from the South Bay Lakers on December 24, 2021. Coach Gary McKnight shared his excitement about the announcement:. “I was very proud,” he said. “I think he’s learned from being a young kid in the NBA, ‘If I really bust my tail on defense, I’ll have a role in this league.’ … I think he’s perfect for the Lakers.”

Carlo Valdes ‘08 Former three striper, Carlo Valdes has recently returned from competing on the 2022 U.S. Men’s Bobsled Olympic Team. He previously competed in the four-man event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. A graduate of UCLA where he played football and competed in track and field, Carlo was introduced to the sport of bobsled by a former UCLA teammate. Well done, Carlo! Katie Lou Samuelson ‘15 Katie Lou is returning to Southern California! In early February, the LA Sparks announced that it had acquired Katie Lou in a trade with Seattle. After Mater Dei, Katie played for the UConn Huskies where she greatly contributed to the program’s tradition of greatness. After UConn, Katie began her WNBA career with the Chicago Sky before moving onto the Dallas Wings. She also played overseas with Spain’s Perfumerías Avenida. Katie’s sister, Karlie ‘13, fellow Monarch, Stanford graduate and former WNBA player was also on the team. In 2021, Katie Lou was traded to the Seattle Storm where she became a fulltime starter for the first time in her professional career. Ryan McMahon ‘13 Ryan recently signed a six-year, $70 million extension contract with the Colorado Rockies where he has been for five seasons. Ryan is coming off a career-best season in which he hit .254/.331/.449 and played elite defense at third base and second base. It is expected he will remain the Rockie’s starting 3rd baseman. While at Mater Dei, Ryan was not only a member of the baseball team (also playing third base), but he was also a senior captain and starting quarterback with the football team. Ryan credits his football experience to his growth as a person and athlete. However, baseball was always his first love. It’s great to see you living your passion, Ryan! 6

2020-2021 ANNUAL IMPACT REPORT COVID-19 presented an incredible amount of challenges to so many in the world of education - whether it was planning for safety protocols, managing online learning, prioritizing the community’s wellness, or re-imagining time-honored events to comply with recommended health protocols. It was not easy. Our administration, faculty, and staff worked tirelessly to ensure that our students remained with us, even when the global pandemic presented their families with heartbreaking financial and sitautional obstacles. We are deeply grateful to YOU, our incredible Mater Dei family, for stepping up and answering the call to the many campaigns and initiatives we put forth during the 2020-2021 school year. You had a tremendous impact on our entire campus community! Our emergency campaign for families impacted by the fallout from COVID-19 (nearly 200 current students) took place from June 1, 2020 through August 10, 2020. A very special thanks to Frank Suryan, Lifetime Parent and President of the Board of Directors of the Mater Dei Monarch Foundation for generously matching every single gift made to the Now More Than Ever Campaign.

MEMORIAL AND HONORARY FUNDS

Over the years, the menu of memorial and honorary funds established at Mater Dei has greatly increased, extending the volume of support we provide our current students while honoring the life of a loved one who was passionate about a Mater Dei education. Through the Mater Dei Monarch Foundation, the memory and legacy of the funds’ namesake will live into perpetuity through our endowment. In this year’s impact report, we are pleased to highlight two special funds. For more information about our memorial and honorary fund giving program, please contact Kathleen Kelly ‘94, Director of Alumni & Estate Giving at (714) 850-9536 or kkelly@materdei.org. TED AND JOSIE LUMARDA SCHOLARSHIP FUND Joe Lumarda ‘78 is forever grateful for the gift of his Catholic education at Mater Dei High School. A few years ago, he established the Ted and Josie Lumarda Scholarship Fund as a tribute to his late parents (pictured left with him in 1987 the night before his graduation and commissioning ceremonty at Aviation Officer Candidate School at Naval Air Station Pensacola). Ted and Josie Lumarda were immigrants from the Philippines and spent decades in service to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange. His father served as a gardener, driver and all around “guy” while his mother worked as a housekeeper. Growing up across the street from the convent (“or motherhouse”), “I had a one-of-a-kind family: one father, two mothers and hundreds of sisters. My parents were not just employees, but valued members of a community,” Joe said. The Ted and Josie Lumarda Scholarship Fund provides need-based financial aid to current Monarchs who are the children of parents working in the service industry. Joe feels passionately about the sacrifice his parents made to provide him with a Catholic education and wants to ensure the same opportunity for current and future generations of Monarchs. MICHAEL MOTHERWAY ‘86 FINANCIAL AID FUND Michael Motherway ‘86 was a beloved father, husband, friend, and classmate whose life was cut short by ALS. As ALS slowly stole Mike’s physical strength, his unshakable faith, courage, humor, and humility became a source of inspiration and awe to those around him. His spiritual transcendence is the legacy he leaves to his wife, Julia; their children, Billy ‘18 and Cecilia ‘21 (pictured left); and countless others who knew and loved him. During his illness, Michael’s Mater Dei family came together to support him physically, spiritually, and financially. A fund was created to help with mounting medical expenses as well as fighting to find a cure for ALS. Following Mike’s passing on May 7, 2015, the Motherway Family created the Michael Motherway ’86 Financial Aid Fund to continue his legacy at Mater Dei and support Monarchs who otherwise may not be able to attain the Monarch experience Michael loved so very much. As a student at Mater Dei, Michael was a member of ASB, a standout football player, a lead in the Senior Musical; and an outstanding Monarch loved by all. Following graduation, he went on to Princeton. After Princeton, Mike earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara and became a successful entrepreneur. Michael’s legacy lives on through this fund as well as the annual Motherway tailgate fundraiser. For the past eight years, this fund has grown to support many Monarchs in need. In addition, an endowment has been created that is very near to allowing this annual grant to being self-sustaining, which will ensure Michael’s memory lives on at Mater Dei forever. 17

HONOR GLORY LOVE STUDENTS ESTABLISH OC FOOD BANK CLUB

When opportunities to physically volunteer in-person were greatly limited due to Covid gathering restrictions, a group of Mater Dei students acted and got creative. First, they made Christmas Cards to accompany meals given to senior citizens at Oasis Senior Center. Then, they created a new club called the Mater Dei OC Food Bank Club to sustain local outreach. The club is focused on volunteering in the community to help ensure local persons in need have access to food. The club is led by juniors Emmi Webb and Lucia Howald. “Some challenges that we had as students trying to volunteer during the pandemic, were finding an organization that would allow minors to volunteer. Due to the pandemic, more and more organizations were being selective about who they would let volunteer. At the time, the CDC still did not know how COVID-19 would transmit through children. Therefore, they only allowed people over 18 to volunteer. After asking seven organizations, the CAPOC (Community Action Partnership of Orange County) said yes and allowed us to partner with them,” said Emmi. In January, members of the club, which totals 95 students, volunteered at The OC Food Bank, a program of CAPOC uniting communities to end hunger and malnutrition by partnering with more than 300 local charities, soup kitchens and community organizations. The students worked on the assembly line boxing food for low-income senior citizens in need. Emmi shared, “we made boxes, placed non-perishable foods in them on the conveyor belt, and taped the boxes up. We did this for two hours and made 350 boxes collectively. The boxes that we made were then shipped to low-income senior citizens across Garden Grove.” Beyond this very successful day, Emmi and Lucia plan to expand their club’s engagement in the community and have another event in June at the Garden Grove Food Bank. Mater Dei’s robust club program offers over 85 active clubs to meet the unique needs of our students. As a result of the pandemic, Emmi and Lucia were committed to establishing this new club on campus. “We felt that there was a disproportional amount of people with food insecurity and we wanted to do something more than just have a food donation. We wanted to be active in our service to our community. There was also not another club that actively fits these needs like ours,” said Lucia. 18

CLASS OF 1983 EXEMPLIFIES LIFELONG MONARCH BOND “Once a Monarch, always a Monarch” is a phrase that all members of the Mater Dei family know well. The bond that alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Mater Dei share across the decades is often hard to describe. The lessons of “service to others” woven throughout the Mater Dei experience remains etched in the hearts of Monarchs everywhere and endures well beyond graduation. Most recently, members of the Class of 1983 rallied in support of one of their classmates, Finbar O’Donoghue. Finbar’s son, Sean, had a heart transplant at a young age that lasted until his early 20's. Although the family was lucky to find a second match, Sean spent a year in ICU and went into kidney failure. Dialysis did not improve his condition and doctors at UCLA described his odds of a kidney match as one in 3.5 million. Enter fellow ’83 classmate, Sandy Gordon Barker, founder of The Gold Rush Cure Foundation which offers support to families with gravely ill children. After tragically losing her son, Christian, to leukemia Sandy and her family were inspired to create a foundation to bring hope and encouragement to children and their families as they fight cancer. “They say our true colors are revealed when we face adversity. Christian (pictured left) showed us his true colors through his incredible courage, determination, respect, compassion for others, and faithfulness in God. His quiet and sweet nature spoke volumes. I hope he can see how his life and legacy have impacted so many people. He is the driving force behind so much of what we do,” said Sandy. During the pandemic, normal methods of donor screenings were compromised which further complicated Sean’s odds of finding a match. To sustain the screening process, Sandy hosted a remote “be the match” drive in her own home (pictured below left) This was something that had never been done before and many Mater Dei alumni showed up to be screened. A family friend and close friend of Christian's wanted to get screened, but was younger than UCLA likes to use. However, she insisted and was the one in 3.5 million match for Sean! The Class of '83 alumni rallied again thanks to the heavy lifting of classmates Mike Olson, Sandy Dust Otis, Christine Merrill Monge, Kelli Seely Green, Steve and Annamarie Vandewalle, and the Gold Rush Cure Foundation! This time it was to raise funds to support Sean's donor for missed work and other expenses. The story is nothing short of miraculous and truly demonstrates the lifelong bond we have as Monarchs across the generations. “Sean’s an amazing young man – always reaching out to help others,” said Steve Vandewalle. “Our class has always been there to support each other, and we needed their help, now more than ever for one of our kids.” Thank you to all the incredible members of the Class of 1983 who came together to support the child of a Monarch. Visit https://goldrushcure.org/ for more information about the Gold Rush Cure Foundation. 19

ASH WEDNESDAY MASS BRINGS ON CAMPUS COMMUNITY TOGETHER On Wednesday, March 2, the Mater Dei community came together in prayer to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass in the Grotto. Normally, all-school Masses take place in the Meruelo Athletic Center. But the event was moved outside to the Grotto this year for several reasons. “The beauty of the Grotto enhanced with the Stations of the Cross on the tress and the purple draped cross was the perfect location for this year’s Mass,” said Ms. Helen Steves, Executive Director of Campus Ministry. In addition to the symbols of our faith that carry us through Lent, blue and yellow bouquets and a prayer candle were present in honor of our brothers and sisters in Ukraine. Our Ash Wednesday Mass theme featured faculty and staff who have a current student at Mater Dei. Mr. Josh Avendano ’97, Director of Information Technology, and his son, Jason ‘25 (pictured on our cover), were honored to be a part of the procession into Mass. “I was so honored when Ms. Steves asked me. As an alumnus, it was so special to share this tradition with my son who is following in the footsteps of so many members of our family as a second-generation Monarch. I felt so blessed,” said Mr. Avendano. While it was a bright and sunny day, the mood in the Grotto was somber and reverent. “Even in these most challenging times, our students were deeply respectful. I am proud of them, and I credit the daily work of our incredible Religious Studies Department for preparing them for this Mass,” said Ms. Steves. Father Anthony Bautista, was thrilled to preside over his first all-school Mass. Father Anthony arrived from the Philippines last 20

May and began his position as our campus chaplain on July 1. He is a member of the Disciples of Mary and lives in a community house in Anaheim. “Each day we hold Mass in our chapel during lunch. I also preside over Masses with our sports teams and campus groups. Celebrating Mass in front of the whole school [of 2,150 students and 200+ faculty/staff] was amazing. Of course, I feel nervous before every Mass. But it was a great experience to be with the entire community,” he said. There are many layers of preparation for all-school Masses at Mater Dei including planning the logistics with our facilities team, the environment with our florist, the powerful and prayerful music led by our senior chamber singers and musicians and working with our extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. “It was a gift to be able to begin our 2022 Lenten Journey united at our All-School Ash Wednesday Mass. It always inspires me that so many of our faculty, staff and students step up to share in Fr. Anthony Bautista was honored to celebrate his first all-school Mass. the numerous ministries of our Mass,” said Ms. Steves. We went forth from our Ash Wednesday Mass asking the Lord to change our hearts so that we may live Lent and beyond with Honor, Glory, and Love.

The purple draped cross sat in the center of the Grotto as a sign of our Lenten Journey.

Benjamin Thai ‘23 served as one of multiple student cantors at Mass.

Our prayer candle and blue and yellow bouquet honored Ukraine. 21

ALL SCHOOL AUCTION BRINGS THE FUN OUTSIDE

The Monarch Way parking lot was transformed into an incredible outdoor tasting venue.

The 2022 All School Auction: A Taste of Mater Dei was a night full of joy, community, and care for this home we call Mater Dei. Under the uncertainty of large indoor gathering restrictions, we quickly pivoted to our outdoor resources. The parking lot in front of the Meruelo Athletic Center was beautifully transformed into a chic venue with strung lights, cocktail and vintage picnic tables and over 20 food and beverage vendors which made the event a true tasting. And…did we mention the ferris wheel? The students enjoyed having rides at the Homecoming Dance in October of last year. We thought, why not bring the fun to our auction attendees! It truly was a night to remember and one that broke all kinds of records. With a record $603,000 raised, including the highest Fund-aNeed in Mater Dei Auction history ($271,000!!) we will be able to enhance our already beautiful Grotto with a new space of prayer and relaxation - The St. Francis Peace Plaza. The project will also improve audio and visual needs which will support the great 22

increase in outdoor events since the pandemic. These changes will provide a space for our students, families, alumni, and friends to gather and celebrate all the goodness this community is. Guests were also introduced to our new president, Michael Brennan, who welcomes in a new era of greatness for this esteemed school. Not to overshadow this, attendees had the opportunity to celebrate a true Monarch, our dear principal, Ms. Frances Clare, who has served Catholic schools for over 50 years now. Again, the love and joy shared that evening was palpable, and we are eager with anticipation to welcome you all again next year at the all school auction!

Just four days on the job, President Mike Brennan shared his excitement and gratitude for the warm welcome to the Mater Dei family.

Auction Chairs Jeanine Chen and Lynette Thoreson (second and third from left) with our Alumni and Advancement Team.

Loyal members of the Class of 1959 joined the fun including (from left) Chuck Dobson, Mike Woods, and Bob Webber. 23

CURRENT STUDENTS

ZOOLOGY CLASS ADDS WILD FUN TO THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Three years ago, the zoology course was added to Mater Dei’s already robust science curriculum. The course addition resulted from feedback in a student survey. Year one saw 40 students and has since doubled in size with 82 in the course in the 2021-22 school year. The course is open to students in grades 10-12 who have satisfied a prerequisite in Biology. Most of this year’s class are juniors and seniors. Mrs. Kristeen Stolo, who holds a BS in Zoology from Cal Poly Pomona, serves as the Zoology teacher and was thrilled to bring this new course to Mater Dei. “When I was asked to create the zoology class, I was very excited to bring this subject to Mater Dei. Zoology is my passion and I never thought I would be able to teach it at a high school level. I appreciate that Mater Dei gave me the opportunity to teach this material when most high schools would not. To be able to share the animals and their adaptations with the students is truly a pleasure,” she said. Students study all the different groups of animals starting with protists (not animals but similar to the ancestors of animals) and ending with mammals. Course work includes dissections, handson labs including making models, coding spheros, and “creative” ecological surveys (in lieu of being in nature students classify different cars in the parking lot.) The class also enjoys working with live animals such as crickets and fish.

Charlie McGee ‘22, an aspiring zoologist, was thrilled to visit with tarantula.

Mrs. Stolo shared that her students’ favorite aspect of the zoology class is something she named Freaky Feature Friday. She zooms in on an adaptation of an animal, has the students guess how that feature functions, and the name of the animal. After she reveals the animal, the students enjoy a short video. “When I ask at the end of the year, what their favorite part is about the class, that always comes up,” she said. During the course’s inaugural year, Mrs. Stolo took her students on a trip to the Santa Ana Zoo. The past two years of restrictions diverted that activity, so Mrs. Stolo and the Science Department Prehistoric Pets brought several “friends” for our got creative and brought the zoo to Mater Dei with a live students to enjoy in person. reptile show in February. The visit enabled students to view and touch most of the animals including a five-foot Burmese python named “Honey,” “Jaba the frog” (an African bullfrog), “Tiny Tina” (a 30 lb. tortoise), and baby American alligator named “Shira.” Some even held a tarantula and a corn snake. “[My students] loved this activity. They had the biggest smiles when they left, said heartfelt thank yous to me and to the presenter.” Next year, Mrs. Stolo plans to return to the Santa Ana Zoo and make the reptile show a regular course tradition. “I have a feeling the reptile show will be on a list of students’ favorites just like Freaky Feature Friday.” Thank you, Mrs. Stolo for sharing your passion for zoology with your students. It is truly exciting to think of the career paths this course is inspiring.

GIRLS’ BEACH VOLLEYBALL DIGS INTO INAUGRUAL CIF SEASON After growing and thriving over the past few years as a club sport, the Girls’ Beach Volleyball program was excited to conquer its inaugural CIF season. Lead by Head Coach Jacqui Wood and Assistant Coach Whitney Pavlik-LeVecke ’02, the team has already grown into a cohesive and respected program. And just as we went to press, the team captured their first ever Trinity League Championship. Team Captain Mallory Gannon ‘22 (pictured left) shared her enthusiasm for the sport’s move to CIF. “It’s fun to be a part of the team’s inaugural CIF season. It gives more girls in high school the opportunity to play volleyball at a high level. This inaugural season increases the popularity of the sport and allows indoor players to switch over and fully commit to beach volleyball,” she said. Mallory and her teammates are hopeful that the exposure the team receives as a CIF sport attracts future athletes to play at Mater Dei. At the same time, they are excited for the advantage of gaining attention from college scouts enabling players to see their future in the sport at their college of their dreams. Catch a game at their home court in Huntington Beach at Newland Street and be sure to follow the team on Instagram @materdeibeach. See you at the beach!

Congratulations to the following students who were chosen as semi-finalists as OC Artists of the Year, a recognition program supported by the Orange County Register and Chapman University’s College of Performing Arts. Artists of the Year represent the top junior and senior artists in Orange County. Like Olympians representing excellence for their countries, Artists of the Year represent excellence for their school. Artists of the Year are evaluated not only for their technical talent, but also how they think and explore artistically, how they are growing as artists, and the heart they bring to their work. Each category had 15 students from across Orange County. Finalists for OC Artist of the Year will be announced on May 1 followed by an awards ceremony on May 9. We are so proud of all of our amazing student artists and the incredible teachers and mentors supporting them along the way. It is even more promising to see them performing live and in person with gathering restrictions lifting. Visit our newly redesigned arts website to catch a performance or learn more about our programs in the arts at www.materdeiarts.org. 25

FACULTY STAFF

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: JACK PHAN, SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Teachers at Mater Dei love to make their classrooms fun and engaging for students. Mr. Jack Phan who teaches Physics and AP Physics I to juniors and seniors is no exception. One would think that various aspects of the course would take center stage as decorations in the physics classroom.

Instead, Mr. Phan has an impressive collection of stuffed animals. “I raffle [them] out to students for [earning] an A in my class. I used to play claw machines before the pandemic, but now they come from Costco. The students use them as emotional support plushies during tests and quizzes. I just love how cute they are. My favorite is a stuffed owl. She’s quite a hoot.” Yes, Mr. Phan loves a good pun and is known for joking with his students. “[Mater Dei] students are very polite, and they even laugh at my jokes when they’re terrible,” he said.

country. With plans to become a doctor, he served three and half years as a Navy corpsman and was assigned to CVN-74, the John C. Stennis, in Bremerton, Washington. However, due to lack of volunteers on the ground at the time, Mr. Phan moved to train and then serve three tours in Iraq with the United States Marines. He sustained an injury during his third tour and was medically discharged. After taking some time off to heal and travel, Mr. Phan decided that teaching physics was his calling. “It reminded me of the better times in my life when if you did everything right, things end up alright. I don’t regret my time served, but it is not something I remember too fondly.” Outside of the classroom, Mr. Phan enjoys spending time with wife as well as playing chess, computer and board games, and Dungeons and Dragons. He is still quite fond of claw machines and is excited for the pandemic restrictions lifting so he can get back in action. “My physics education actually helps me in this endeavor,” he said.

Always thinking about how he can entertain and educate his students, Mr. Phan said “I also research A former adjunct faculty member at Cal State and write dad jokes to tell as part of my daily lesson University, Fullerton, Mr. Phan has been teaching at plans. He’s even found a way to incorporate stuffed animals and forces together, which is a fun and memorable way for students to learn. On a more serious note, Mr. Phan said, “I love changing students’ mind about not being a ‘physics’ person. They come in not knowing what to expect and thinking they can’t do it but changing that perspective and thought process is the greatest joy in teaching for me.” In addition to shaping the minds of young Monarchs, we can also be grateful to Mr. Phan for serving our

ENGLISH TEACHER JOSH LONG IS A PUBLISHED AUTHOR In the past few decades, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been firmly cemented in popular culture thanks to Peter Jackson’s success with the film series which debuted in 2001. Want proof that Tolkien is not only relative, but also still wildly popular decades later? Google his most memorable characters including Frodo, Bilbo, and Gandalf and you’ll find memes and videos abound. Popular or not, what many may not know is that Tolkien was a devout Catholic. Last summer, Mr. Josh Long of the English Department had an article published in Tolkien Studies, an academic journal. “I explored [Tolkien’s] use of religious symbolism in his short fairy tale Smith of Wootton Major. There is a whole section of my article devoted to Tolkien’s depiction of Mary.” Congrats on getting published, Mr. Long. Scan QR Code for full article
