From the Master There are few places in the world where I would prefer to be at this time of the year than South Africa. So it is with a scintilla of envy coupled with considerable pride that I write this introduction to Marlborough’s 2020 Cricket Tour programme. Our cricketers have ventured to South Africa previously but this will be the College’s first truly co-educational tour with our talented boys’ and girls’ teams touring together. A total of 28 players will experience a packed itinerary in a stunningly beautiful country famed for its sporting passion and vibrant culture. We wish them every success on the pitch and look forward to following their progress from afar. I am sure they will be outstanding representatives of the College both on and off the field of play.

MASTER IN CHARGE OF CRICKET
Master in Charge of Cricket It is extremely exciting to be taking a squad of 28 of our most promising College cricketers to South Africa over the Lent half-term on Marlborough’s first mixed Cricket Tour. The boys and girls have enjoyed their school cricketing journeys immensely thus far and there are plenty of highlights for them to look back on fondly. The memories of this tour will be special; it will provide a great challenge in preparation for an exciting domestic season in the summer on a circuit that is always competitive. Girls’ cricket has evolved at considerable pace since the inaugural match four years ago. This tour marks a watershed moment in its development. South Africa is a fiercely proud sporting nation with a culture that is rich in diversity. The opportunity to sample cricket in the stunningly beautiful Cape Town region, with its spectacular landscapes, is an enormous privilege. We look forward to visiting the home town of some of the greats of the game, including Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs,

Gary Kirsten, Alan Lamb and perhaps most famously of all Basil D’Oliveira. England’s recent win at Newlands, their first since 1957, will hopefully provide some inspiration for our tourists, but I imagine there will also be reminders of the last year’s Rugby World Cup final to contend with. Travel is enriching and playing cricket on tour offers many new and different experiences. The tourists will learn new skills, not least playing on different wickets in unfamiliar conditions. No doubt there will be some competitive challenges to be encountered on the field and some friendships to be made off it. We hope the squad will not only have a fun and fulfilling tour, but also return home more experienced and wiser both as cricketers and as people.

Captain Kilbee – Tour Memories Old Marlburian and former Wiltshire & Unicorns cricketer Ed Kilbee (C2 2001-06) reminisces about the 2006 tour to Cape Town. Ed captained the XI that year and the tour proved the perfect preparation for one of the most successful seasons in recent memory, with the side going on to win 12 out of 14 completed matches during the Summer term.
Q What are your memories from the 2006 tour that you captained? A The South Africa tour is still fondly remembered by the whole squad, staff, coaches and parents. It was a busy and exciting itinerary. Cape Town was an eye-opening experience for a teenager. The outdoor lifestyle and culture of sport over there was fantastic. Q Were there any particular highlights that stood out and what insight did you get to South Africa beyond cricket?

A The hospitality we received was incredibly generous from our opposition, OMs, vibrant locals and even our bus driver Mr Jacobs. I will never forget the views that we saw from Table Mountain, over the glitzy Camps Bay, into the Mother City and across the Cape Flats towards the Winelands.

TOUR MEMORIES
Q How did the experience help the squad prepare for the domestic season? A Cricket in SA is embraced with such a great competitive spirit. Those first encounters on the fields of Bishops, Wynberg, SACS (where they showed us some tough love) were a steep learning curve, but it helped galvanize the team and we bonded through our experiences. It definitely contributed to the successful 2006 season.
Q Last year’s XI were privileged to have you work with them during pre-season. What were your impressions of them as a young group of cricketers? A It was fantastic to be asked back and given an opportunity to work with the XI. The cricketers at Marlborough always have a few things in common whist every single player is unique in their way. They were still a relatively young side, but optimistic in nature and they showed glimpses of real determination.
Q You opted to study at Cape Town University after Marlborough. Was this a direct result of the tour?
Q In your experience of playing in cricket in South Africa, what are the biggest challenges?
A Not necessarily, but the tour opened my eyes to what a fantastic place Cape Town was. I had a great three years at university there. Many of those I met and played cricket with remain close friends.
A Sport in South Africa is played with an intensity which can’t really be matched anywhere else in the world and especially at schoolboy level. If teams are well prepared and willing to pull tightly together and remain positive through

the inevitable ups and downs of a tour, all whilst confronting the opponents, they will always stand a good chance of success. Q Did you imagine that 14 years later Marlborough would be taking a mixed boys and girls tour to Cape Town? A I would not have imagined this at all and I think it’s superb. Good luck girls! Cricket is an all-inclusive game and women’s cricket is growing very fast. Q Finally, what is the most important advice that you would give to this year’s tourists? A My advice would be to; listen very carefully, stick together as much as possible, respect South Africa and it will respect you! I wish the whole tour party, in particular all the boys and girls and any others who are travelling for the first time, the most magical and magnificent time. Get stuck in and prepare to be inspired!

Good Luck Girls! A message of support from former England captain, Charlotte Edwards, who is Girls’ Cricket Professional at Marlborough College. When I first heard that the Marlborough Girls’ XI were heading to South African for their inaugural overseas tour a rather mischievous smile crept across my face. For it was as a fresh-faced 17-year-old that I made my first international cricket tour as part of the England U21 Women’s squad. Suffice to say in those amateur days sleep was at a premium and we got fairly familiar with the nightspots of Bloemfontein. Luckily, I know the Marlborough girls are far more professional! I am hugely sad not to be with the squad on this tour. Commentary duties at the Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia have got in the way, but I shall be following progress closely. I have said before that one of my ultimate cricketing

highlights of 2019 was the Marlborough girls overhauling an excellent Shrewsbury side on Prize Day in front of that huge crowd and my message to them for this tour is to enjoy every moment, but also to compete with purpose and intensity. They should be looking to build on the success of 2019 within a new environment and facing new challenges. I also concluded my international career in South Africa at the iconic Newlands Stadium in 2016 and so the country holds some particularly special memories for me. The girls will remember this tour for the rest of their lives and they should be very proud that, through this tour, the Girls’ Cricket at Marlborough continues to be a driving force in developing the women’s game in schools both home and abroad.

A HISTORY OF CRICKET AT MARLBOROUGH
A History of Cricket at Marlborough Marlborough College was founded in 1843 and for the first few years there was no expectation that any extracurricular activities would be provided by the staff. However, a few of the pupils were interested in cricket. They organised some internal games for their own interest, clubbing together to provide bats, balls, stumps etc. By 1849 the boys had begun levelling a ground and had formed a Cricket Club. George Cotton, who arrived from Rugby School as Master in 1852, had worked under Dr.Arnold while he famously reformed the School. Cotton introduced all of Arnold’s reforms to Marlborough, especially stressing the importance of sport. He insisted that to be eligible to play for a College team, boys had to practise at least three times a week. By 1855, when the first match between the two schools took place at Lord’s, the main cricket square at Marlborough had been completed. By 1860 the XI plateau had been fully leveled and a rustic pavilion had been built.

This was replaced by the present pavilion in 1874 which was designed by Victorian architect Alfred Waterhouse, famous for designing the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall. For 117 years the Marlborough/Rugby match was a regular fixture at Lord’s. Marlborough were thrashed by 10 wickets in the inaugural fixture and it was not until 1862 that they secured their first victory, winning by an innings and 17 runs. The last match at Lord’s against Rugby took place in 1972 with Marlborough winning
by 6 wickets. Since then, the match has been played as a two-day fixture at both schools in alternate years. In August 2017 the two schools were invited back to Lord’s for Rugby’s 450th anniversary with Marlborough winning a thrilling contest by 25 runs. The fixture has been played 160 times. Of these Rugby have won 50 and Marlborough 45. Arguably the most famous old Marlburian cricketer is A.G. Steel. He captained England and played in the first ever Test Match in 1880, and his name features on the inscription upon the Ashes Urn. Other notable names include former President of the MCC Mike Griffith, who captained Sussex in the 1960s & 1970s and also played Hockey for England, and former BBC Test Match Special commentator and Times correspondent Christopher Martin-Jenkins, famously nicknamed ‘the voice of cricket.’ In addition, Leslie Gay (Somerset, Hampshire & England),

Cricket tours are a relatively recent phenomenon, with the first overseas tour to Zimbabwe taking place in 1999, followed by trips to South Africa in 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012, and Barbados in 2017. Girls’ Cricket was introduced in 2016 and soon afterwards the inaugural match against Bradfield was hosted. It has evolved rapidly with Marlborough winning the first Girls fixture against Rugby by 8 wickets in 2018.

A Ben: It will be a challenge and we’re hugely excited about it. There are plenty of family members coming out to support and the weather should be a bonus too!
Q When you think of cricket at Marlborough, how do you reflect on your experiences so far? Ben: I have learned a huge amount; A my first year in the XI was a learning curve whilst last season was pretty good results-wise. The coaching we have received has been excellent, and Mr Alleyne has passed on his insight of playing in South Africa. Rosie: At Marlborough everyone A knows how to make it fun as well as competitive. It has been a really enjoyable experience and we’ve had some highs in terms of team performances and memorable moments, such as the Prize Day matches.
