Today, as we wander through the familiar halls of old ortheast, we sense the e v er -present spirit of friendliness of pride of modest y of preemmnence atmosphere. of humbleness and of a wel c ome

For some this spirit will linger only in memories ... for others it is only the beginning the beginning of man y new , enjo y able experiences.

Those who will lea v e this 1year will remember , as others ha v e before them , its v igorous pep rallies , its convocations exhibiting student and guest talent and challenges in sports, ·musi c, drama and journalism.

This is ortheast today and tomorrow.

Whether it is a weekly meeting of a school organization or an annual convention for teachers, t he Northeast faculty works untireingly to gi ve Northeast students a well -rounded curriculum and extra curricular acti v ities.

Seniors fa~

Finall y feeling as if they're really getting into the swing of things , the senior class of 1951 has to say " so lon g " They will have to leave the traditions of Northeast , to be carried on by the underclassmen.

Way back when they were sevent h grader s , the time was spent in wonderment at the newness of the situation, and in making friends with whom the y have spent the remainder of thei r time at Northeast.

When in the eighth gra de they had begun to settle down to life at Northeast. Reserve game s and Civic League trip s were just some of the highli g hts of that y ea r.

Then came the ninth gra de----and gra duation, at last they were members of senior high.

Taking time out from their shorthand assignment to po se for the camera are Elaine Ar mstrong, Charlotte Mu r phy , JoAnne Mohler and Carol Everson

the future

But as sophomores they found that senior high wasn't all fun-they had to study a little harder and their assembly seats downstairs weren't much better than the ones they ' d had in the balcony.

As juniors one of the happiest momen ts was plannnig and attending the junior-senior banquet.

Now as sen i ors , they find that thi s year brin g s senior sneak day , senior assembly , baccalaureate and graduation-the goal they had worked for and finally reached.

Regretfully they leave behind friends and the happy times at Nort hea st , bu t ea g erl y await the experiences y et before them.

Northeast did someth ing new this year to promote good sportsmanship and a friendly feeling with other schools . An exchange talent a ssembl y with Fremont was held which prcve d ver y successful and the class hopes to continue suc h programs in - the future with other schools.

Also this year's leadership classes created a

new activity, the Rocket Revue, which was held April 20. It was based on the Rocket Spotlight but performed in the evening for the public.

With all these activities one can see that the class had much work to do and has contributed greatly to the progress of our school.

Real interest in writing and the will to work hard are required of a beginning journalism student. However, the results of the labors of these ambitious cubs were shown in various ways this year.

O f real value an d intere s t to a s pmng writers was the NHSPA convention hel d in Lincoln at the University of Nebraska first semester. Highlighting the second semester was the publication of two issues of the Northeastern, completely handled by the beginners with the valuable assistance of adviser, Mrs Catherine Killeen.

Two changes in the club constitution wern made this year. The first involved the mdhod for fillir.g vacancies in the club Now the next gi rl on the list kept by the sponsors is automaticall y a member . Girls who are in ba nd during the marching season can now belong to the club also Before the change, no girl could be in both organizations

The football banquet and Turnabout dance, the two highlights of the school year which are sponsored by the club, proved to be big successes along with the annual N club-Pep club picnic.

Attending out of town trips, selling concessions at games, dodging demerits and always y elling themselves hoarse are just a few of the many memories of the 1950-1951 Rockettes.

Also the band played at a vesper concert which was given at school in January. During the spring , hard work was put into the concerts. The band traveled , sixty strong , to Columbus for the Mid-East Musical Festiva l where they gave a concert , as well as participating in a mass band , ensembles and solo numbers . The band season came to a triumphant close with the annual spring concert in May

T hi s year the band added spark to their uniforms by wearing black and white saddl e shoes . They purchased new plumes and had repairs made on all the school -owned instruments as well as buying new pep tunes and concert music Next year the band is planning to work even harder to improve the uniforms.

Farmers of the future

Whenever there is any talk around Northeas t concerning a truly progressive organization, you can bet they're talking about FFA. These boys do not merely study agriculture ; they really put their learning into practice through their various projects.

This year the boys visited members' homes to examine and take picture s of their projects. In November a turkey feed was held. The district FFA convention was February 3, and

in the following spring their annual picnic took place. However, one of their main achievements was the purchase of a new tractor. FF A boys earned money for the tractor by picking corn, selling seeds and selling concessions at games.

The long-range farming program is something new also. Each member planned his future in agriculture to include 16 years.

FF A officers for this year are pictured left to right, Junior Thomas, sentinel; Joe Votava , news reporter; Keith Schaepe , vice president; Merwyn Davidson , president; Otis Ninneman, secretary and Milo Hermance , treasurer. Season~ su~~essful

Nebraska's class A football title went to the Rockets of Northeast as Coaches Bun Galloway and assistant Max Hester directed their charges through the school's first undefeated season A string of nine seasonal wins etched out a consecutive victory record of l'i' games

City and Mid-East conference championships were other major achievements of the 1950 squad. The amazing post-season totals showed 337 points for Northeast as compared to 31 for nine opponents.

Starting in late August with eight lettermen, the team drilled for two weeks Beatrice fell 20-0 as the avenging Rockets rolled awa y the curtains for the grid year.

Columbus ' Discoverers were swamped as the Rocketmen roared over the first foreign soil. The scor eboard read 57- 7 at the finis h of the contest in which eight boys hit the scoring column for the Black and White .

Picked by sports writers as a good club to upset the Northeas t gridders was Fremo nt. However, the Tigers fell easy prey to th e Rocket onslaught and the score stood 25-0 in the end .

Northeast now engaged the crosstown rival, Lincoln High, in th e latter's stadium After engineering a 12-0 halftime lead the Rocket s scampered to another pair of tallies in the remaining periods to win the city crown, 25-0 . Featured in the rout were a 75 yard pas s interception return and a 22 yard jaunt by a guard following a forward and lateral pass, both of which scored

Hastings was dropped 20-6 by the Rockets in a decisive Mid-Eas t bout. This homecoming was the fifth game that Northeast ha d played on wet ground

The York Dukes were crushed under the Rocket wheels , 55-6 . Mid-East title hopes were at stake as Northeast met Fa irbury there . The conference champs came home riding a 45-6 win.

Two Omaha squads provided the last bits of competition for Northeast. Benson was defeated 52-0 as eight men tallied again . Th e state honors were clinched as the Rocket machine stamped ou t Creighton Prep, 38-6, on hard grass - free turf. Creighton had previously been rated third best in Nebraska.

Northeast's 1951 cagemen shot , passed and dr ibbled their way through a season bolstered with 14 wins and a Mid-East trophy but scarred with 4 losses. Although not as impressi ve as in the preceding two years, the Rockets checked in what may be classified as a very successful term.

Coach Ed Johnson's char g es , given a chance to thrice-repeat as state champions, found the path a little too rocky as they fell in the opening round of state play before Omaha Tech, 51-38. Thus ended the Rocket regime for '51. Totals showed that Northeast scored 755 points in 18 games as compared with their opponents 552.

Leaping into a heavy schedule, the Black and White hoopsters rambled past Scottsbluff and almost met their kismet in an overtime clash with North Platte won by the Rockets, 43-41. Omaha North spoiled the record as they scraped past the Northeast congregation.

Find ing their feet again, the Rockets swept over Columbus, Fremont's champs-to-be , Norfolk, Hastings, Beatrice, Creighton Prep and outlasted Falls City in a close one, 28-25

Lincoln Central, planning to spoil Northeast's city title hopes, were surprised to the tune of 40 to 31. A fourth Lincoln city crown rested upon the Rockets' heads.

Grand Island jinxed the Rocket cagers for the second time in what might be called a frigid evening for the Lincolnites. Once more Northeast changed pace and cruised past York, Fairbury and Boys Town The Mid-East championship was theirs.

In the district tourney at Fairbury, Northeast began slo w ly and eked out a sudden-death overtime victory in a thrilling game with Falls City The Links from across the city handed the Rockets their third loss and, in doing so, stole the regional title.

Coach Johnson's Rockets were rated in the state's top five during the entire season Their season must be recognized as being one of the best in the school's history.

Max Rezek guided his reserves through a tough 14 game schedule , winning 12 of them . As the season wore on the team gained exper ience. They hit their peak in downing Beatrice and Fremont by the scores of 40-2 8 :md 39-34 respectivel y. The reserves lost only to Lincoln high and Hastings B by scores of 41-48 and 26-31. These games have g i ven the boys a lot of valuable experience that some of the boys will have use for in future y ears Coach Ed Johnson should receive some very fine material next year for the varsit y squad.
