Is the Goochland Media Center heaven? Well, pretty close to it if you go by senior Russell Gambino’s song that accompanies the video that helped Goochland High School’s library win fourth place in the

Follett Challenge. That contest win netted the library a $25,000 award, said librarian Deb Cross, more than the library’s annual budget from the School Board. The contest was sponsored by the Follett School Solutions Group, a vendor that Cross said she often uses. Her assistant Joanne DiTerlizzi got the

email announcing the Follett Challenge and encouraged Cross to enter. “She said we needed to enter this contest,” recalled Cross. “Do it, do it, do it,” Cross said DiTerlizzi urged her. Cross said this year’s contest focused on 21st century skills and gave much of see Library > page 5

Hadensville resident Annette M. Thompson has appealed a court order prohibiting her from possessing companion animals. Judge Edward K. Carpenter issued the order at an April 8 hearing in Goochland General District Court to determine if Goochland Animal Control was justified in seizing five dogs from Thompson on April 1 that were subsequently euthanized. The judge found Animal Control had acted properly and ordered Thompson to pay $559 to Goochland Animal Clinic for the examination and euthanizing of the dogs. Thompson, 67, was in

court Monday morning to set her next court date on five Class 1 misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty. Either she or her attorney must appear April 22 to set a trial date on those charges, each of which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Also on Monday Thompson posted a $5,600 appeals bond on the court order and was given a June 11 date in Goochland Circuit Court on that matter. She helps run the Alvis Dairy Farm in Goochland now, but a few years ago Erin Henley was searching for an idea for her Blue Ridge Governor’s School senior project. “They said try and leave a legacy,” recalled Henley last Thursday during a break in the Extension Service’s annual Goochland 4-H Agriculture and Natural Resource Day, now in its fifth year. Commonly called Ag Day, the program brings all Goochland’s 4th-graders together for a day outside on the field at Goochland Elementary School, to learn about agriculture and its importance to the Virginia economy. It wouldn’t have happened without Henley, now 22 and a 2012 Virginia Tech graduate and Jocelyn Dailey, Unit Coordinator of the Goochland Extension Service. “Jocelyn was my mentor,” recalled Henley, who majored in dairy science at Va Tech. “We started brainstorming and came up with Ag Day,” she said. Most of the county’s population is only a couple generations removed from the farm so it’s important to remind them of how important agriculture is, said Henley.

Goochland Middle School principal Johnette Burdette has resigned her position effective June 28. Goochland School Superintendent James Lane announced her resignation at the School Board’s regular meeting Tuesday night. “Mrs. Burdette will truly be missed as the leader of our middle school. Her efforts to reduce bullying and improve instruction are commendable. She also led us through the transition of moving to our new building. Her efforts on behalf of our students are greatly appreciated and we look forward to her continued success as an educational leader,” said Lane. Lane said the search for a new middle school principal would begin immediately, with the position being posted today, April 10.

“We are looking for innovative school leadership and will seek only top candidates with an extensive and diverse instructional background to fill the position. We intend to find someone to continue the great work that has been completed at GMS in recent years while pursuing our path of established improvement and excellence,” said Lane. Lane read a statement from Burdette at the meeting. “I consider myself blessed to have had the opportunity to serve such a phenomenal community over the past seven years. While I am excited about the opportunities which await me, I am saddened as this door closes,” wrote Burdette. “I wish the community well as these are certainly exciting times for the students of Goochland County Public Schools. I would ask for the continued support of our stakeholders in finishing the year strong, with students at

Lots of dancers hope to open their own studios, but Lauren Gibson, owner of Aspire Dance Academy, is living that dream. The studio, which is located at 1903 Manakin Road in Manakin-Sabot, teaches the genres of ballet, jazz and tap to students from ages 3 to adult. Although Aspire Dance Academy opened in September 2012, it will host a ribbon cutting at its studio from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, sponsored by the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce to celebrate its premiere dance season. teenager. For that reason, it was her aspiration to train local performers and help them to develop a love for dance. But opening the studio wasn’t Gibson’s first attempt at helping to guide young dancers. Previously, she taught dance classes in Greenville, N.C. and created a free dance instruction program for underprivileged youth in Washington, N.C. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a child,” Gibson said. “I’ve been dancing for over 20 years, and I’ve always wanted to share the art and beauty of dance and have a venue where I can teach it to others.” “And, there were already gymnastics and music (studios) in Goochland, but it was an opportunity to provide some more exposure to

the arts (the Goochland) area, especially with dance,” Gibson added. The first of Aspire Dance Academy’s two forthcoming summer class sessions will begin on Monday, June 10 and continue through Friday, July 5. The second session will start on Monday, July 15 and end on Friday, August 16. Gibson said that her business is a member of the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce and that she worked closely with Bonnie Creasy, the chamber’s director, to plan the ribbon cutting. Members of the public will get a chance to see a performance by Aspire Dance Academy’s students during the studio’s Spring Showcase that will happen at Goochland Elementary School at 3150 River Road in Goochland at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 17. Tickets are available for $5. Gibson said that her students have been practicing for the upcoming Spring Showcase since last September. She called the performance a compilation of all of the techniques that they have learned since then.

“It’s our premier showcase and an opportunity for the dancers to display the pieces that they have been working on all year,” Gibson said. “The song selection, as well as the original choreography, express my thoughts and will show off the talents of the Aspire family during our premiere season.” According to Gibson, community involvement is the way that Aspire Dance Academy will make its mark on the local community. The studio has already performed for organizations such as Connor’s Heroes, Goochland County Schools, and the Goochland Education Foundation, and Gibson said that its dancers will soon appear at Innsbrook After Work, a forthcoming musical festival that will begin in Glen Allen this summer. “We’re working to develop our individual dancers and to give back to the community through the arts as well,” Gibson said. Cross enlisted senior Russell Gambino to sing in the video after she recorded herself and was dissatisfied with the results with the lyrics she and Instructional Technology Resource Teacher Bea Cantor came up with. Cross knew that Cantor was an Apple Distinguished Educator and had used a video in which she sang to gain that distinction. “Can you sing?” she asked Gambino when he came in one day to check out a book, already knowing the answer. Gambino, who has performed in several musical productions at the high school,

agreed to give it a try. “She’d seen me in Grease and Annie,” he explained. “The song kind of makes the video,” said Cross, who said she and Cantor wrote the lyrics to a modified version of Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek.” In the video, Gambino enters the library and begins to sing about how it’s like heaven. Cross said she’ll use the award, which must be spent on Follett products, to upgrade the library’s fiction and non-fiction collection, as well as to buy new E-readers. DiTerlizzi agreed. “She said, ‘We have John Hendron, we’ll win,’ “said Cross. “I basically took what we were already doing and made it fit the guidelines of the contest,” she said. Cross said the video basically shows what the teachers and the school are doing in using their Media Center. “I took that information and used it to answer some of the questions,” explained Cross. “Our teachers are doing some great things.” Cross said her view of the library is a place where people can gather and collaborate and share ideas. “It’s not the hush-hush quiet place that it used to be,”said Cross, who likened the atmosphere in the library to the modern workplace, where workers constantly interact. “It’s not just a place where you sit down and read a book, it’s more of a classroom,” she explained. Not your grandma’s library You’ve got that right! And because the Goochland High School Media Center, as it’s called, is so thoroughly modern and 21st century oriented it won fourth place last week in the Follett Challenge, an achievement worth $25,000! See the story on page 1. Libraries have changed over the years with the advances in technology, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the excitement that having access to the world through the resources they offer can generate. I still remember my first visit to the library at Patrick Henry Elementary School in Richmond a few decades back when I was a first-grader. Our teacher brought us in and the librarian explained how it all worked. You could check out books and take them home, she said. Hot dog! “Aha!” I thought, as my eyes swept over the book-laden shelves, this is where all the secrets are. It seemed so simple. All I have to do is read these books and I’ll know what’s up, I thought to myself. But somehow the libraries got bigger and bigger as I got older and I never managed to make a real dent in their inventory of knowledge -- though I tried. It took me awhile to realize that I was never going to be able to read them all. Nevertheless, libraries have always been among my favorite places. I recall wandering through

the stacks of Alderman Library in Charlottesville, looking for material for research papers, only to be waylaid by enticing looking titles having nothing to do with my topic on the shelves I passed. I’d pull one down and start reading and -- before I knew it -- I was an hour behind schedule! In fact, in times gone by, the ability to read -- along with access to a library with an adequate collection of books -- was considered by many to be all one really needed to become an educated person, provided one had some time and self-discipline. Today I guess the biggest difference at the library, and librarian Deb Cross mentioned this during our interview, is that it’s no longer a place where you have to hold your tongue or suffer a stern glare for being too noisy. Today’s school libraries sometimes remind one more of Internet coffee shops -- without the coffee, of course -- where inquisitive students can come and broaden their horizons and work individually or collectively on the project at hand. All in all, a perfectly nice place to hang out. So, congratulations to the Goochland High School Library/ Media Center on its award. And even though I’m getting further and further behind, I’m still reading! -Ken Odor

Ms. Harper talks to parents about how to promote their child’s educational growth over the summer and prepare them for the next grade.

On March 19 Byrd Elementary School held its first annual HIP/HOP program, sponsored by Title I teachers Margaret Dickerson and Regina Carter. HIP/HOP stands for Highly Involved Parents make Highly Outstanding People. The goals of this program are to increase our parent involvement and to support community outreach. The parent educational night began with dinner in the cafeteria, which was provided through generous donations from Food Lion, Kroger, Chris Gleason, and Byrd’s Grannies. Next, the parents enjoyed seeing a slide presentation developed by Zoe Parrish and Carter featuring students engaged in learning. Parents later attended one of four informative sessions designed to help them enhance their child’s education. The event was a success with over 70 parents attending. We anticipate having an even larger turnout for HIP/HOP next year.

Letters to the Editor Universal background checks on guns are needed Since 1968 more Americans have been killed by gunfire then in all of our wars combined! This is more then enough reason for the people to demand universal background checks and that mental health be a part of that system. The majority however are not mentally related. We can’t stop all the potential murderers from buying guns but every little bit we do to weed out the restricted people the fewer incidents we will have. I don’t know the laws on stolen guns but I would propose a minimum 10-year sentence per gun stolen. I would also propose attempted murder and kidnapping charges in almost every case involving a gun. Firm seeks Goochland Hometown Heroes Contributed Report

To pay tribute to the communities they serve, the law firm of Allen & Allen created the Hometown Heroes award. Last year, three of heroes recognized were from the Goochland communityGrace Butler, Patricia Atherholt, and Chief Howard Henley. These community role models were honored alongside 47 other winners. The Hometown Heroes program was started in 2010 in honor of the firm’s 100 year anniversary. It continues today as the Allen Law Firm endeavors to bring a spotlight to the local heroes who improve the community. Be careful of slow moving farm equipment Raising food on a farm often calls for moving tractors and other equipment on roadways. “Some farmers have different pieces of land that are separated, and they have to travel down roadways with their equipment in order to plant or harvest their crops,” explained Jimmy Maass, safety manager for Virginia Farm Bureau. Most farm equipment travels slower than 20 mph and does not stop and start

as quickly as a car. As soon as a driver spots farm equipment or a slow-moving vehicle emblem, he or she should slow down to the speed of the equipment, usually between 15 and 20 mph, and maintain a generous following distance. “The closure distance between a car traveling at 55 mph and a tractor traveling at 15 mph can be extremely short,” Maass said. Do not pass farm equipment—or any vehicle—in a no

passing zone. Some equipment requires the operator to swing wide to make a turn, so a farmer may be pulling off to the side of the road to make a turn, not indicating that traffic should pass. “Use extreme caution if you decide to pass farm equipment,” Maass said. “If the equipment is being followed by an escort vehicle, you should never pass that vehicle; treat it as if it were part of the farm equipment.”

Bulldogs drawing comparisons to 2008 state finalists By Arthur Utley Special Correspondent

Senior leadership starts at the top for the Goochland High girls soccer team. Tom Reid, the deeply tanned, white-haired head coach, is 74 years old and closing fast on 75. His white hair -- “He’s easy to spot anywhere on campus,” first-year assistant coach Sara Rowan said -- caught the attention of Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces for children who are suffering from long-term medical hair loss. “They asked me to let it grow because they don’t get many white-haired men,” Reid said after his Group A Bulldogs defeated visiting Prince Edward 6-0 Thursday for their fifth consecutive victory after a season-opening tie with Group AA Fluvanna. “I have to let it grow three more inches, probably about six or seven more months. It’s slow growing.” A donor’s hair needs to be 10 inches long before it can be cut. He wears it in a ponytail. “It took me two years to get this much. I get a lot of comments about it,” he said. This year’s soccer team is earning plenty of comments, too. Reid, who is in his sixth year as the high school coach, guided his first team to the Group A state championship game in 2008. Those Bulldogs lost to George Mason of Falls Church, which has won every state title since. Even though this year’s team has just three seniors, it is drawing some comparisons to the state runner-up group. Reid’s granddaughter, Kayla Cleveland, is one of the seniors. Her older sister, Annelle, was on the state runner-up team. Annelle, a junior at Longwood University, regularly reminds Kayla of the 2008 team’s success.

“This year we came out with a new team, a lot of new faces, but I think we’ve come together. If we keep playing the way we have, I think we can get [to the state tournament],” Cleveland said. The Bulldogs, the favorites in the James River District, scored 22 goals in the three games prior to Thursday’s victory over Prince Edward, but they struggled to score in the first half against the Eagles despite spending most of the time on the PE side of the field. The only Goochland goal came from junior Brogan Holcombe with 15:40 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs had 16 shots on goal in the first 40 minutes and 30 for the game. “This team can win the state if they stay in the mental part of it. You saw the skill level. The mental part is their nemesis,” Reid said. “If they don’t want to win, they won’t win. They set their mind to it [in the second half], and they started clicking.” Sydney Alvis, who scored 17 goals last year as a freshman,

provided a cushion by beating PE’s keeper Samantha Gubash one-on-one in the 49th minute. The scoring floodgate opened with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game. Virginia Young, a sophomore playing her first year on the high school team, scored off a good pass for 3-0 and made it 4-0 two minutes later on a penalty kick. Cleveland smacked a 25-yard, left-footed shot that found the net for 5-0 in the 77th minute. Alvis finished up the scoring during stoppage time, when, with her back to the goal, she kicked a high-bouncing ball over her shoulder and into the net from about 20 yards out. For most of the game, Alvis had been thwarted by the PE keeper or the crossbar or wayward shots. Alvis plays soccer year round. School boys and girls teams. “It’s definitely fun to see how much we’ve grown together and work together as a team,” Alvis said. “I think we have come a long way. A lot of the freshmen coming on, not playing soccer before, have really improved.” Cleveland has played for a family member all her soccer life. First it was her mother, then her father and now her grandfather. “I don’t get treated any differently than anyone else. I run when they run. I get yelled at just like they do. It’s a joy for me because it’s my last year. To play [for her grandfather] is a big deal. It means a lot to me.” Cleveland, who was in middle school when the Bulldogs were the state runners-up, remembers her sister’s team being bigger and more experienced than this year’s group. “[We have] different levels of ability. We just have to work with it and make it work as best as we can,” she said. Cleveland isn’t the only current player to have a sibling

on the 2008 team. Sophomore Madison Engel’s sister Lauren played then. Madison is the third Engel to play for Reid. The other two seniors, Dana Rodriguez and Christina Mills, a volleyball and basketball standout, are veteran defenders. “We have a really strong defense, and the forwards and midfielders know that. I think that boosts their confidence that they have this wall behind then,” said Rowan, who played soccer growing up in Baltimore but is coaching for the first time. “We don’t have anybody that hogs the ball. They pass. They want each other to score. They talk a lot. That lets the players know where they are going.” Rowan has enjoyed coaching more than she thought and said Reid has taught her a lot. She doesn’t have to worry about him giving up the coaching reins. Reid’s wife, Billie, runs the clock at games. She keeps some statistics and calls in the results to the local newspapers. She

doesn’t see her high school sweetheart (Roanoke) and husband of 54 years leaving the field behind either. “I like working with young people,” Reid said. “I love to see them enjoy themselves. When Mr. Gordon [athletic director Bryan Gordon] tells me he’s tired of me, I’ll stop.” On Monday evening, Goochland improved to 6-0-1, 4-0 JRD with a 7-0 win over Bluestone. Goochland hosted King William on Wednesday then has a week off before backto-back home matches against Bluestone and Collegiate on Apr. 24-25. The Goochland bats were hot. The Cumberland defense was not (so much). In the end, it wasn’t even close. The Bulldogs racked up 13 hits and took advantage of five Dukes errors in earning a 13-0 slaughter rule-shortened rout of visiting Cumberland last Tuesday afternoon. Goochland starting pitcher Jackie Tremain said the victory was the result of a solid effort all around. “We usually have a very good hitting team. We showed that tonight,” Tremain said. “We have very good defense – it helps a lot. And our pitching is really good – that’s a benefit.” Tremain struck out four and gave up no hits in three innings of work. She departed with a 10-0 lead. Kaytlyn Jones came in for two innings of shutout relief. Offensively, it seemed at times that the Bulldogs could not be stopped. Taylor Scruggs led Goochland, going 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Upcoming Bulldog events On Saturday, Apr. 20 at 6 p.m. Goochland High School will honor the Bulldogs’ 2012 state football championship team with a ring ceremony held in the auditorium. The school will recognize players who were named to postseason teams, watch a portion of the highlight video then present the rings. Peter Farrell from the House of Delegates will be presenting the team with a copy of a resolution that was read in the House of Delegates regarding the state championship. The school

will also have a large selection of state championship apparel available for sale. The event is open to the public. On Saturday, Apr. 27 the Goochland Bulldog 5k will take place at the high school kicking off at 9 a.m. Walk up registrations will be accepted between 7:30-8:30 a.m. The event is open to adults, children and dogs alike and will take place rain or shine to raise money for the Goochland athletic programs.

However, Dukes team captain Kamren Gilliam said her team is getting better. “We’ve been progressing a lot since replaced a lot of seniors last year. … We’re going to get better from here,” Gilliam said. “We just need to put the bat on the ball – that’s all.” Better hitting would have helped. The Dukes finished with no hits. Only four reached base: two by errors, one on a walk, and one hit by pitch. Goochland coach Amy Henneberger said Cumberland is not usually such a pushover. “Last year they played other teams pretty close,” Henneberger said. “I think they upset a couple of teams.” She said Tremain’s pitching – particularly her variety and precision – played a major role in keeping the Dukes’ bats quiet. “[Tremain was] changing, mixing up speeds and just keeping the off-balance that way, and changing locations, hitting her spots,” Henneberger said.

The first Bulldog at the plate -- Chakiryn Jackson – got Goochland’s first hit of the day, a single. One out later, Tester reached base and Jackson scored on an error. Tremain walked, and Taylor Scruggs drove Tester in on a groundout to third base. Sydney Pratt began the Bulldog second by reaching on another Cumberland error. She advanced to third on an error and passed ball. Spencer singled, then Jackson sacrificed Pratt in with a fly to center field. Fleming walked, then she and Spencer were driven in by Tester’s triple. Tester subsequently scored on a single by Scruggs. Three Cumberland errors contributed to another fourrun inning for the Bulldogs in the third. With one out, Spencer reached on an error. After another out, she scored on Fleming’s RBI single. Tester reached on an error, and Tremain drove Fleming home with another single. Tremain likewise scored on an error. Spencer opened Goochland’s fourth inning

with a single – the first of three straight, with Jacskon and Fleming following Spencer onto the bags – with Flemings’s single driving Spencer home. One out later, Scruggs drover Jackson and Fleming home. The sudden arrival of warm temperatures were a welcome change, given the havoc the weather has wreaked on the Bulldogs’ schedule so far, with their two scrimmages cancelled and four games scheduled through the end of March postponed. Five weeks into the season, Goochland had played only three games. “I’m glad we’re playing,” Henneberger said. “We’ve been practicing since the third week of February and we had only two games and no scrimmages. Last year by this time we had 10 games and one scrimmage in. It’s hard – we’d rather be playing.” The Bulldogs will made a dent in their makeup schedule over the remainder of the week. over Bluestone (7-2, 2-1) on Friday. “Having to reschedule those games and play so many during the week has kind of been hard,” Tremain said. “But we’re getting used to [the pace].
