Play Ball! Ah, the good old days. Baseball games were played in someone’s backyard or in the empty field next to your buddy’s house. Everybody played from morning to night. I’ll bet you can remember it like it was yesterday, but the old sandlot baseball games are a thing of the past. Today the game is played at engineered complexes on manicured fields and these beautiful facilities are surrounded by chain link fence. It is the same situation with tennis courts, soccer fields, even pickleball courts. Nothing is done ”halfway”. Ideal for pool surroundings, balcony dividers and elevated overlooks, or to mitigate wind tunneling in courtyards and other open areas, Ocula is an ultra-streamlined windscreen system designed to divert wind while elevating architectural aesthetics.

At guardrail height (43”), the system can withstand winds loads up to 86psf – 8x the amount of a standard windscreen. As height is increased, it can withstand wind loads up to 54psf, still far exceeding industry standards.

“A glass windscreen offers the perfect marriage of form, function and freedom,” noted Rygielski Proeston. “Architects no longer have to rely on visually obstructive and confining walls to protect patrons and property from unpleasant dust and gusty winds. With systems like Ascent and Ocula, they can create open, airy environments that celebrate surrounding views while keeping patrons comfortable and sheltered from wind and debris.” For more information about windscreen options from Trex Commercial, visit www.trexcommercial.com.

Trex Commercial, a national leader in engineering and manufacturing architectural railing systems for commercial building applications, is taking outdoor design projects to new heights with the debut of Ocula™, its newest glass windscreen system. Inspired by the success of the company’s award-winning Ascent® post-supported glass windscreen, Ocula offers optimal versatility with its innovative post-free, clampsupported design.

Trex WindscreenFramelessDebutsCommercialOcula™Glass

Ocula features stainless steel clamps suitable for interior or exterior applications and can be paired with view-optimizing clear glass for a barely-there look, or frosted or fritted glass for enhanced privacy. The system is offered in three standard heights for guardrail (43”), pool surround (48”) or balcony divider (60”). Custom heights are also available, along with multiple top cap and handrail options.

“Our new Ocula system not only provides protection from the elements, but also enhances views and sophistication with its sleek, unobstructed styling,” says Laura Rygielski Preston, president of Trex Commercial. “The innovative clamp support system delivers a virtually invisible barrier and is highly customizable to accommodate any outdoor setting.”

Branding is on point when windscreens and netting are used. Whether it’s a ball field, a school campus, or sports complex, these materials engage the audience with on-point messaging while enhancing security. Leaders in the industry share new projects and features in this special section.

Before adding windscreen the area looked disorganized and Captionmessy.

A recent job by Ball Fabrics at Pinecrest Elementary in central Florida perfectly demonstrates how the combination of windscreen and playful graphics can soften the look of important security measures while welcoming visitors with messages unique to that particular student body.

The school’s bike rack, located near the entrance alongside the parking lot, is immediately visible to every visitor. Enclosing the space with chain link was an important security measure for children and bikes, but the bike rack looked stark and forbidding. The fence became a focal point for temporary banners that ended up looking messy and disorganized.

• It offers additional security where students linger to park bikes and gather their belongings.

• The fence became an attractive outdoor board, branding the property and giving a shout-out to the school mascot with fun cartoon characters and attractive colors.

• Printed windscreen is an easy, affordable way to soften and personalize a school campus, to communicate school attitude and philosophy, to visually engage visitors, to promote school messages and to heighten security.

Printed Windscreen Brightens Elementary School Campuses

“School administrators wanted something more friendly and approachable,” explains Jon Ball, vice president of operations/president of Ball Fabrics. “They worked with our in-house graphics department to design windscreen sporting colorful, kidfriendly graphics. On one side is the school name, and the other side highlights the school’sWrappingmascot.”the printed windscreen around the enclosure did away with the messiness and accomplished several functions:

Due to heightened security, elementary schools are looking more and more institutional and less and less approachable. Structures are focused inward rather than outward. There is a greater use of chain link fencing to define and protect areas where children congregate. Sometimes, these measures cause the campus to look cold and unapproachable, especially to young students.

12 SEPTEMBER 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA CASE STUDY

The branding challenges that schools face are numerous: how to make the school grounds look less intimidating to the students they serve, how to communicate messages of school spirit and fun; and how to create a welcoming environment for students to learn and grow despite the necessary security measures. One answer is finding ways to enhance the school exterior and grounds with welcoming messages and uplifting color.

“Since there are approximately three elementary schools to every high school, this represents a virtually untapped market for windscreen and outdoor graphics,” Ball says.Windscreens can increase security yet soften and enhance the look of enclosed play areas, outdoor courtyards, and perimeter fencing. For more information, visit www.ballfabrics.com. Windscreen, school logos, and outdoor graphics typically make you think of high school sports and athletic fields. As a result, high schools and colleges have been the primary market for windscreen and outdoor graphics. But, forward thinking elementary schools are beginning to recognize printed windscreen as a viable means to accomplish many of their branding objectives.

• It is playful and bright, greeting children as they are dropped off from cars and buses, visually softening the front of the school and immediately engaging onlookers. The bright graphics communicate that this is a place where fun things happen.

Chain link is one of the most versatile fences for athletic use since it allows spectators to see while still providing good protection. If privacy from non-paying spectators is a concern, sight-line obstructing vinyl slats can be added. When it comes to installing a chain link fence around an athletic field, it is equally important to include padding for that fence, particularly in a sport like baseball, when players often run into the fence. Be sure to place brightly colored padding on the top of the fence and possibly behind the goal posts so that any high-speed collision is not with the metal of the fence itself. This protects athletes and can help extend the life of the fence.

Jen Klassen, owner of DAC Industries, explains that athletic field fences provide crowd control, venue security, and safety for sporting events. “These fences differentiate specific areas of the sporting fields, and spectator areas, and whether the fence screens athletes or protects viewers, it becomes part of the game.”She adds that a well-designed athletic field requires a great deal of planning and attention to detail. “Regardless of its size and seating capacity, there are common elements that deserve careful consideration to make sure everyone can safely enjoy the game. Using the right materials in the right places is critical.”

She says there are a several different types of panic bar hardware and accessories available that are ideal for sports fields and arenas. Some require codes for access, while others use keyed entry. “The right solution depends on local regulations and individual project needs. It’s technology that will both keep property secure and save lives in the event of an emergency.”

Keeping Sports Fields Secure Sports Fencing & Playground Equipment

The venue and level of play should be considered when determining what fencing material will be used at the field.

Most athletic facilities at schools have a utility gate closer to the building through which maintenance machinery, training equipment and players can enter the field. This gate is kept locked when not in use. There is usually a separate, single entrance for fans, both for security and for ease of collecting tickets or entrance fees. However, in the event of an emergency, this one entrance should not be the only exit for spectators. Part of the planning for any athletic facility should include fast, safe emergency evacuation through designated emergency exits of spectators and athletes. Panic bars and panic exit hardware are recommended because they are designed to prevent tragedies fromPanicoccurring.bartechnology, also known as a crash bar, is designed to allow people to exit an area during an emergency situation.

This is something that should be considered for every entry point throughout the facility.

Proper Fencing Material

Access Control

Securing a Field

As with all aspects of the fencing industry, the need for increased, infallible security is critical in athletic venues. There is a constant need for balance between safety of occupants and maintaining security of an exterior perimeter. While there are many exit hardware and access control products available, options for gate hardware are significantly narrowed when dealing with components that are exposed to harsh outdoor environments and heavy use and abuse, like those in an athletic field setting.

The beginning of a new school year means that high school football will soon be underway. Hopefully, for the first time since the pandemic began, the excitement of these events that we once took for granted will once again be experienced across the country. However, in the enjoyment of games, marching bands, cheerleaders and more, it’s easy to forget the environment of the football stadium, even at the high school level – from the entrance gates to the fence around the field – is designed to provide both function and safety for players as well as fans.

Klassen and her team at DAC offer the following guidelines to keep in mind when planning fencing for a a football, or any sports, field:

The size of the school often determines the style of the fence around the exterior of a high school football stadium because this is typically budget-driven. Smaller schools may again have chain link. Larger schools with bigger budgets may have an ornamental metal fence along the side of the stadium that parallels the road. Specialty fencing is usually a four foot chainlink fence used on the edge of the bleachers to ensure that spectators (mainly children) do not slip between the railings. Every fence needs a secure gate at its entry point. DAC’s Strong-Arm Latch is a great example of a secure solution that will keep the fence closed and secure while still allowing for easy entry. It also eliminates the need for a drop rod, which makes it very versatile. A padlock can be attached for added security when the field is not in use.

14 SEPTEMBER 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA

“This is something we feel strongly about at DAC, and encourage contractors to consider for all projects, even if local building codes do not require,” says Klassen. “We manufacture accessories that allow panic bars to be installed on a gate that locks from the outside. This keeps an area secure while still ensuring occupants have a quick way out in the event of an emergency.”

In June of 2022, Empty Saddle Club, a private club focused on ensuring the continuation of Western-style riding, contacted COVERMASTER® in search of a replacement for their old openweave poly windscreens. One of the main requirements the Club had for their new windscreens was for them to function as a visual impairment for the horses and cows inside the arena. They wanted to prevent outside activity from distracting the animals.

After a conversation with a representative from the COVERMASTER team, in which the wide variety of options available were discussed, Empty Saddle Club determined the Polypropylene Tight Weave Windscreen was the best windscreen solution for their facility. Offering a durable 95% shading capacity, this windscreen was the perfect choice for a facility looking to visually obstruct any object or area. Typically, the main purpose of equine windscreens is for wind and noise reduction, with increased privacy, sun shading, and improved appearance of arenas and racing tracks as further benefits.

COVERMASTER®

COVERMASTER equine fence screens are made with high tensile strength fabrics such as polypropylene and vinyl coated mesh. Ultra-violet resistant, they are available in an open- or closed- weave and in various weights and grades to satisfy a wide range of applications.

Manufacturers of Fence Screen, Netting and Padding

Following the installation of the polypropylene tight-weave windscreen at Empty Saddle Club’s facility, the Club shared with COVERMASTER that they were very happy with the look and fit of their new windscreens, noting that less dust sticks to these windscreens than windscreens they had used in the past. Empty Saddle Club highly recommends the COVERMASTER windscreen to other facilities looking to improve the look, privacy, and sunshade of their facility, as well as those looking to support their animals in performing their best. Privacy windscreens such as the one used by Empty Saddle Club have a wide variety of applications, including construction sites, private residences, businesses, and even athletic facilities. But inclusive play isn’t just about creating access for physically or cognitively challenged visitors. The idea of wholesome and engaging play also considers intergenerational play. For example, more parks and play areas are now installing equipment for the elderly to play and engage safely alongside younger park goers. The health benefits of exercise for the elderly are many and well known, including a reduced risk of strokes, heart disease, and some cancers; lessens cognitive decline, and controls obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Likewise, younger children benefit by using intergenerational play to dispel negative stereotypes and bond with the elderly. It also helps children understand aging, fosters empathy, and may fill a social gap for children lacking grandparents or other seniors in their families.

Interactive elements for wheelchair users are imperative to a well-rounded park or playground design. The Freedom Glider offers wheelchair users a chance to self-propel, which provides a more independent play experience. This swing is suitable for wheelchairs of all sizes, can be operated independently, and comes in various color options to fit in any park or play area.

Parks and playgrounds are places for visitors to engage and connect with one another and their environment. However, if poorly designed, some visitors may have trouble accessing equipment and leave the play area feeling frustrated and excluded. Understanding the vast range of people’s physical and cognitive abilities can help landscape architects, designers, and builders create engaging and exciting spaces for all by building more inclusive play spaces. Inclusive playgrounds are intended to remove physical and social barriers to participation through designs that provide an environment where visitors can play together using the same equipment. Collaborative play on shared equipment is satisfying and engaging. Strengthening minds, bodies, and social bonds is what play is all about, after all.

“At InCord, we believe in the emotional and physical healing power of play and are proud to offer a variety of trusted play elements with a strong focus on safety,” says Meredith Shay, InCord CEO and Owner. “Our barrier nets and fencing provide environmental protection and aesthetics, and custom play structures bring the fun while remaining focused on safety as a top priority.”

InCord offers a custom-crafted range of play elements, including bridges, tunnels, climbers, and more, using steel-core Netform™ ropes that withstand even the most rigorous play. They also provide wheelchair-accessible play pieces, including the Freedom Glider and the Rolli.

The Rolli is an in-ground, wheelchair-accessible bouncer with ample room for a wheelchair and a caretaker to share the flexible mat and bounce together. Bouncing is proven to maintain/ build core strength and enhance coordination, which is associated with improved neurological development. From a sensory perspective, in-ground trampolines also have tremendous benefits for those with limited mobility, as sitting or lying on the trampoline will still produce movement that mimics a floating sensation. This type of stimulation is also incredibly beneficial for children on the autism spectrum and beyond. Making parks and play areas accessible and engaging to visitors of all ages and abilities strengthens community and familial bonds. In addition, play areas provide a space for children to advance their imagination, self-awareness, risk perception, and identity, as well as their social and motor skills. These elements combine to create a strengthened, safer space and thus a more connected and thriving community.

A relatively new variation of the 24-inch solid material is the practice of integrating the solid portion of the fence directly into expanded metal fence panels. Each expanded metal panel goes through a process of slitting and stretching a metal sheet to form the desired style. During the production of an expanded metal panel the industrial press can be programmed to create a 24-inch high solid plane of metal, by pausing or skipping while the material moved through the press, essentially creating a fully integrated solid plane into the regular expanded metal panels.

The presence of herpetofauna (snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs, salamanders, etc.) or squirrels in an electrical substation can cause a variety of system problems. This may include momentary disturbances of electrical systems, long-term system outages and severe damage to electrical equipment, leading to both a loss of revenue and a decline in customer satisfaction. In addition, personal safety and health issues are always of high concern if operations personnel were to encounter a live animal. Wildlife entering a substation has the potential to lead to animal waste, carcasses and with this, the risk of disease.

There are two principal systems for animal deterrence at the perimeter of substations available in the market today: a) Upside-down V shaped animal deterrent hood, b) A 24-inch-tall solid material attached to the top of the fencing material.

The AMIGUARD ANIMAL SHIELD 6100 & 7100 “Skip meshes” from AMICO Security are a good example of this style, according to Markus Erbeldinger, Ph.D., Product & Engineering Manager with AMICO Security. The AMIGUARD 6100 expanded metal has a diamond opening of 0.3 inches x 0.9 inches, satisfying the IEEE minimum requirements, and the AMIGUARD 7100 mesh has an even smaller opening measuring 0.25 inches x 0.8 inches. “Those ‘skip mesh’ fence systems address the major drawbacks of the current animal

The upside-down V-Shaped design is based on the oldest animal deterrence design in the market, first patented in 1891. The hood material typically mounts at the top of the fence and is typically installed after building the fence. The hood often requires the installation of braces. The 24-inch-tall solid material is recommended by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Standard 1264-15 - IEEE Guide for Animal Deterrence for Electric Power Supply. This guide recommends a smooth polycarbonate sheet, sheet metal or an aluminum barrier extending 24 to 36 inches from the top of the fencing material down. Depending on the size of the animal of concern. IEEE recommends the diamonds of the mesh to be 1in or smaller.

AMICO Security also offers the AMIGUARD ANIMAL SHIELD 5000 system which is an upside-down V design which mounts against the top rail of the fencing system. The 14 Ga design provides rigidity without any additional labor-intensive braces. Erbeldinger says it is important to note that the installation of any animal deterrent system, integrated or mounted, to an existing fence affects the fence open area factor, therefore those systems need to be considered in a wind load calculation for the fencing system.Overall, Erbeldinger says the solid sheet metal design as recommended by IEEE seems to be most cost-effective animal deterrent system, especially if the solid piece is integrated into an expanded metal “skip mesh” fence panel, requiring no additional labor and a minimal increase in material weight. “However, the upside-down V design is still specified by some electrical utilities and has its place in the market.” Learn more at www.amicosecurity.com continued from pg 26

fencing is getting popular, but the high level of maintenance eco-friendly fencing requires is driving the demand for low-maintenance fencing solutions, such as vinyl fencing. Plastic fencing is also emerging as a relatively economical, lightweight, and easy-to-install alternative.

North America dominated the global fencing market in 2021 with a revenue share of over 34%. The persistent growth in construction activities across North America is allowing the region to dominate the global market. The U.S. alone is home to more than 50,000 fence contractors. These contractors provide materials and services around the world. The regional market is also poised for significant growth over the forecast period. The growing demand for home decoration products from households across North America is estimated to drive the growth of the regional market.

The metal segment accounted for the largest revenue share of over 50% in 2021. Metal fencing is particularly used in public places and by government organizations. The growing preference for chain link fences and ornamental fences is expected to drive the growth of the segment. The growing need to install stronger fence to enhance security can also be considered one of the key factors driving the popularity of metal fencing. The growing preference for durable fences that can potentially withstand the changing weather conditions bodes well for the growth of the segment. Wood fencing is a popular choice for residential applications, especially in semi-urban and rural areas, owing to its distinctive aesthetic appeal and the easy availability of wood at affordable prices. These factors have been driving the growth of the wood segment over the past few years. However, wooden fencing is anticipated to witness intense competition from plastic and composite fencing, owing to the lower cost and maintenance associated with the latter. Hence, the plastic and composite segment is also poised for significant growth over the forecast period.

In a report recently released by Grand View Research, the global fencing market size was valued at $27 billion in 2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% from 2022 to 2030.

The looming surge in real estate development, growing industrialization, and the aggressive investments in public and private organizations are making in the construction industry, especially in emerging countries, such as China and India, are driving the need for innovative safety and security solutions are prompting market players to offer enhanced fencing solutions in line with the continuously evolving end-user demands, thereby contributing to the growth of theEco-friendlymarket.

A persistent rise in new housing construction, home improvement projects, remodeling activities, and commercial construction is expected to drive the growth of the market over the forecast period. Twenty-five years in the fencing game is a successful stretch by anyone’s measure. Doubly so when you’re breaking through glass ceilings and creating a family dynasty along the way.

After more than two decades at the helm, Debbie has recently taken a step back, handing the reins over to the second generation of the Whittaker women, her daughter Amy. She says she couldn’t be prouder or happier to know the business will continue to be nurtured in the hands of a strong and capable woman, with her own plans and ideals for success.

Over the years that followed, Debbie transformed the business, shifting it from residential fencing to large-scale commercial and infrastructure projects, becoming one of the leading and preferred partners in the Cairns region. Today, the business supplies a wide range of fencing products as well as designing and manufacturing custom gates, panels, screens and balustrades.

34 SEPTEMBER 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA Mother-Daughter Duo Builds a Fencing Dynasty

“We stock only D&D Technology gate hardware products. They’re Australian made and guaranteed for life and have always fit perfectly with our dedication to quality,” Debbie says. “I believe in being loyal to those that have helped you build your business along the way. Loyalty counts for a lot.”

“Amy taking over the business and keeping it a family-led company is something I’m very proud of,” says Debbie. “She has the confidence of someone who has grown up around the business and has a lot of respect from our staff and customers.”

The early days of the business came with no shortage of challenges. Back in 1998, armed with a brain for numbers and finance built on a career in banking, Debbie Whittaker was looking for a business to buy and grow. When she settled on Cairns Fencing, it was a small domestic fencing company with a handful of employees and a load of untapped potential.

She set about learning everything she could about fencing products, construction standards, and the industry in general, all the while winning over a deeply skeptical customer base.

Amy Roberts

For Amy, taking over the company wasn’t initially part of her career plan. With a degree in engineering from the University of Queensland, she had set her sights on large-scale engineering projects. But with the business in her blood, when duty called, she answered. She now carries on the legacy her mother built, but with her own stamp on it.

Along with 14 full-time employees and a dozen or so permanent installers, Cairns Fencing is a trusted resource for a variety of projects, including high security airport fencing.

And so it goes for mother-daughter duo Debbie Whittaker and Amy Roberts, who next year, will celebrate the silver jubilee of Cairns Fencing as a female-owned and led business in what remains a largely male-dominated industry. Cairns is a city in Queensland, Australia. Despite being halfway around the globe, their story resonates with U.S. and Canadian fencing companies, especially those owned by women or have women in leadership roles. Cairns Fencing is a distributor of D&D Technologies gate hardware products.

“Back then, we’d have contractors and customers come in and say, ‘Can I talk to one of the boys?’ despite the fact that I owned the company and could tell them just as much about what we did,” explains“ThatDebbie.tooka

lot of work to cut through and things didn’t change fast. It probably took 10 years at least before attitudes started to shift. But because I was focused on quality and doing things to a high standard, I developed a reputation, especially with the construction companies, that eventually they only wanted to deal with me,” she says.

The other big focus for me is ensuring that we stay a business where people love to come to work, so keeping the culture strong and building loyalty is a big part of that. That’s been another great legacy that mom built and a huge part of our success.” Debbie Whittaker

The enduring success of Cairns Fencing has been built on rigorous processes, a reputation for uncompromising quality, and a culture of innovation and respect.

“We’re pretty different,” says Amy. “And I think me taking over from her worked because we both accepted that the businesses needed to evolve to reflect how I wanted to run things. Mom is still on board, providing guidance where it’s needed, I’m much more in the day-to-day operations and streamlining what we do even more toward the manufacturing and custom supply side of things.

After licking their wounds for a few months, the three men agreed that quitting wasn’t in their DNA. They knew the business, what their customers wanted, and they knew commercial fencing, sports netting, and outdoor fabric industry. They reviewed what had gone wrong and they knew how to do it better.

Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the everpresent worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.

Dale Ball and his two sons, Larry and Jon, share a unique position at Ball Fabrics: they jointly own the CEO position. It probably wouldn’t work for most companies but they have found it’s a perfect fit as a family-owned and family-founded business.

“The day we were fired from the company we founded and built, we were escorted out of our own offices with nothing but the clothes we were wearing,” says Larry Ball, vice president and co-owner. “Dad told the investors the company would never last without the three of us; we were the company. The investor laughed and said, ‘Everyone thinks he is irreplaceable, but in our experience, it’s always about the product line, and never the person in the corner office.’ He couldn’t have been more wrong.”

“Most people, and most companies, don’t get a second chance. When you lose your entire company – the physical plant, long time employees, loyal customers and all the branding accomplished in 25 years – you wonder if you have another start up left in you,” explains Dale Ball, founder and co-owner of Ball Fabrics.

Their unique management style is only the beginning of their exceptional story. Their first company was stolen by investors, but they’ve come back, better than ever.

After six years of the come-back effort, the men were able to buy back the vacated 47,000 square foot manufacturing facility they previously owned and lost, for half the amount owed on it when the investors took over. “It was a big day when we removed the old name and installed, in big red letters, Ball Fabrics, Inc. on the newly replaced roof,” Jon says.

Extreme customer service at the very time customer service was being eliminated in many companies by automated phone services and virtual web assistants

“Our branding focused on the things we knew resonated with the people who used our products, which included fence contractors, coaches and athletic directors, park and recreation managers,” adds Jon Ball, vice president andTheirco-owner.re-branding strategy was to maximize the many years of business relationships through personal contact and word of mouth. “We didn’t have a marketing budget. Social media was in its infancy, and we had to overcome the stigma from the previous company that carried our name and closed its doors one year and three days after we were fired, owing lots of money to advertisers and suppliers, and having accepted payment without delivering orders to many of our best customers,” Jon elaborates.

FENCENEWS.COM | SEPTEMBER 2022 43

“When we announced the establishment of Ball Fabrics, Inc. ten of our most experienced employees left the pervious company and showed up to work for us,” Dale adds. “We couldn’t pay them what they had been making, they said they’d start where we could afford and their salaries could grow with the company. This was before our shop opened and before we had our first order. They became our department heads. They reached out to their contacts to find raw materials and used equipment at cut rate prices. We never would have made it without them, so we wrote an employee profit-sharing provision into our business plan.”

Grass-roots efforts was the focus. Contacts were made to everyone they had done business with in the past. The word was getting out: the Ball family was back in business. Within months, every single fence customer left the old company and committed to purchasing from Ball Fabrics. A handful of those customers offered financial help, which was repaid as they placed future orders. “It was an incredible act of trust,” says Dale. The growth of the company was supported by anticipating industry growth trends and investing in promising new areas to remain at the forefront of technological advances. “It was a focus that built our original company but got lost as the company expanded. Now, we identified our strengths and stuck to them,” Larry says. “We have invested in state-of-the-art print equipment, hired an experienced print team, developed methods to ensure crisp images that last longer and invested in the machinery to print huge full-color outdoor banners for our customers. We kept our promise to put customer service first so a live person still answers our phone and always will.”

“Our success is something that rose out of the ashes of our mistakes. We put what we learned into practice. We stayed true to who we are when we’re at our best, and we hired talented people who identified with our vision. We’ve gone from 10 employees to 50, and they identify with our vision and embrace our goals to be a company that cares about our customers and produces products that make us proud.”

In a Duke University study from 2006, researchers found that 40% of the actions taken each day are a result of habits, not of conscious decisions. You are a product of your habits, both good and bad. Every great leader and every great employee within the company achieves success, not in a day but because of many, many consistently

good, small choices and decisions that have been made over time to become good habits.

That is the number one key to success: building good habits and making them standardized company policy. Once you define what success means to you and begin to implement the daily decisions to reinforce those good habits, eventually you will reach your goals for success. Understand that achieving these small goals will not result in immediate realization of your goals. Good habits are difficult to maintain because the payoff is always off in the future. It takes time for the many good decisions to bring good results. That’s where the consistency comes in. Day after day, make those good choices for your future happiness.Ifitsounds daunting, don’t let it be so. Yes, it can be a challenge, but a first step can be to reach out for help. Organizations such as the American Fence Association and others offer many member benefits, including educational schools and training, mentoring programs, national and regional trade shows and more. Also, if I can be of help, please let me know. I would be happy to contribute in any way I can.

Tom Luby, Business Consultant and Fence Industry Spokesperson

Have you given this thought and identified your definition of success? Over the years, I have had many successful clients who make a great living and have quality of life for all their employees, mainly because they do the small things right. They have that secret sauce and life is good for them. Occasionally, if you mix the secret sauce with great leadership and a workaholic-like dedication, you can turn a fence company into a juggernaut enterprise worth tens of millions of dollars. I have seen it happen first-hand.

Recently, a retired pharmacist who didn’t know much about the fencing industry came to me after he bought an existing fence company in the greater Atlanta area. That fencing company was in business for twenty years, but just barely getting by. Gary, the pharmacist and new owner of a fence company, was a quick study. He exhibited attention to detail and followed set procedures. He quickly learned his secret sauce for success and in his first year in business, the company earned the most profit ever. He earned well into mid-six figures profit right away and now his wife sleeps much better knowing they are financially secure. Yes, it can be done, if you put in the time and effort, and it’s not all that difficult to do. Not everyone has the ability, or desire, to mix the secret sauce. Over twenty years ago, I had a client in Utah. Against my recommendations, he practiced management by delegation to the extreme. His definition of success was to run a fence company that would allow him to go fishing or hunting for a week or so every month. That wasn’t a recipe for success, and not surprisingly, the company is no longer in business.Thefirst step in mixing the secret sauce is to define what you want to achieve. Next, be consistent in what you do and pay close attention to detail. Another key component is commitment to your work. Let’s face it, success does not come easy, or everyone would achieve it. Be consistent, detail-oriented, and commit to your goals and you will achieve them. Let me caution you, simply setting goals does not ensure success. Establishing good work habits and success-oriented systems and procedures is key. Average leaders make good decisions occasionally, great leaders make consistently good decisions. Your secret sauce is eliminating bad habits and forming good ones.

Success

Success should not only be measured by profitability but by how well you provide for quality of life for all stakeholders, owners, managers, employees, and families. This is the culture of success that I often reference. For me, success is profitability followed by creating a good work culture. We are in the fencing industry to make money. What are your goals? Is your goal to earn a lot of money and retire early? Is it to have a high quality of life, be your own boss and make enough money to pay the bills so you can enjoy life to the fullest?

Senstar Technologies, a world leader in video management and perimeter intrusion detection solutions, was named one of the top five perimeter intrusion brands according to a reader survey conducted by asmag.com earlier this year.

Asmag.com surveyed its readers about the perimeter intrusion detection brands of their choice, features that played a significant role in decisionmaking, and services that need improvement. Senstar was cited as “an established industry name in perimeter intrusion detection products,” offering integrated technologies for multi-layered perimeter protection.

“The purpose of the survey was to identify the brands that are ‘top of mind’ for the security industry and the features they value the most,” said Emily Lin, Editor-in-Chief of asmag.com. “For this, we reached out to our readers, who represent the security distribution channel from distributors and resellers to integrators. The survey reveals that the line between brands and product groups is fading. Decades ago, a company might have been limited to a field like surveillance or intrusion detection. But today, companies can combine different technologies for a diverse solution portfolio to address key security requirements. Channel players place detection accuracy as a top priority and want to integrate their intrusion detection systems with VMS and analytics. They look forward to using artificial intelligence to increase accuracy and reduce false alarms.”

“As the only company on the Top 5 list that is not a camera manufacturer and with a broad range of security technologies, Senstar is proud to be recognized by the industry as a trusted company in perimeter protection,” said Senstar Managing Director Fabien Haubert.

Senstar Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Senstar Technologies, is a leader in the security industry. Senstar’s products have been protecting critical assets worldwide for over 40 years. Learn more at www.senstar.com

3. KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES UP-TO-DATE ON WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE MARKETPLACE. Help them connect what they are hearing on the news and social media about these factors and talk about how they impact the operation of the company, and their jobs. Keep it simple - no need to do a discussion of all the details. Just let them know they are part of the team, so you want them to be informed. Ups and downs in the fencing industry are not new, they have been around since the industry started. In today’s marketplace, the reasons for those ups and downs are a little more complicated. Understanding those factors, and preparing for the next market swing, are the keys to the rest of 2022 being profitable for your company. For more information, visit www.chainlinkinfo.org

2. RAMP UP YOUR MARKETING/SALES IN SOME OF THE MARKETS THAT ARE GETTING GOVERNMENT FUNDING OR ARE HIGH PRIORITY MARKETS FOR FUTURE FUNDING. Infrastructure, renewable fuels, heath care, and schools are some of the more obvious ones. Some of the infrastructure projects outlined in the Build Back Better bill will start taking effect with the passage of this new bill and the end of the fiscal 2022 year. In whatever market you choose, be in it for the long run. Enhance your company’s reputation in these industries though effective use of social media and other communications tools. That way, when the current slowdown picks up, you have stayed on the radar screens of your industry partners.

Don’t Panic: Understand and Deal with It by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP Executive Vice President, Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute 2022 Inductee, American Fence Association Hall of Fame

There is no getting around the fact that Covid changed everyone’s life, and everyone’s business. The return to normalcy is still in its infancy but there is no new normal – yet. Still, there are some things companies can do to prepare for the near future.

1. LOCK IN LOANS AND LINES OF CREDIT NOW. The Fed has been clear that their target is 2% inflation – it’s near 9% now. They only have so many ways to impact inflation, and raising rates is the big one. So, start using your financial partners to be ahead of those raises.

At the beginning of the pandemic, much the fence industry was deemed “essential” by the U.S. government. That meant that projects that had to be put on hold due to Covid opened other opportunities for fence, especially when the residential market increased due to DIY jobs skyrocketing. Many of the market conditions that created those opportunities have reverted to preCovid conditions, with more competition now back in place and running at full speed. That means more competition (again) for workers, for materials, and for contracts.Inflation has soared over the past two years, affecting everyone and everything. The first part of 2022 saw the (hopefully) worst of it, which meant higher prices, especially for transportation. Businesses had to make decisions on how much of these new costs could be passed on to customers without pricing themselves out of being competitive. Meanwhile the Federal Reserve, which held interest rates as low as possible during the pandemic, is trying to push down inflation by raising those interest rates. Small businesses, especially in the construction industry, see those rate increases impact their lines of credit, their ability to finance new projects, and to do accurate business planning.TheBiden

Is the Fence Market Starting to Soften Up?

Many of the manufacturers, contractors, and suppliers in the fence industry who experienced excellent growth over the two Covid-related years* are seeing some drop off during the first half of 2022.

administration, after seeing its domestic agenda grind to a nearhalt, was energized by the passage of a toned-down, but still large, spending bill (the Inflation Reduction Act). There was some good news in the bill for construction/fencing, because the bill includes even more funding for the renewable fuels industry (a large user of fencing). On the downside, it also included a 15% minimum tax that will impact manufacturers hardest.

To some extent, this should have been expected. You must look back at what made those years unique and realize what has changed. Here are few things to consider when planning for the rest of 2022 and beyond.

If you think that things are slowing down a bit after a couple of years of good sales, you are probably right.

Since 2004, the U.S. President and Congress have declared October Cybersecurity Awareness Month in an effort to help individuals and businesses protect themselves online as threats to technology and confidential data become more common. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA) lead a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise cybersecurity awareness nationally and internationally.

CONTROL PHYSICAL ACCESS. Prevent access or use of business computer and devices by unauthorized individuals. Make sure a separate user account is created for each employee and require strong passwords. Enable multi-factor authentication. Administrative privileges should only be given to trusted IT staff and key personnel.

SECURE PAYMENT PROCESSING. Work with your bank or card processors to ensure the most trust and validated tools and anti-fraud services are being used. Also in both cases, recovery from the attacks involved a great deal of time and expense. We learned some valuable lessons and our company now has extensive security in place, along with routine employee training, to prevent these types of attacks from being successful. However, we know from the software we now have in place, that attempts are made against us every single day.”

This year’s campaign theme — “See Yourself in Cyber” — demonstrates that while cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject, ultimately, it’s really all about people. And for companies, it’s all about employees. Every year marks another ‘worst year ever’ for cyberattacks. The good news is that an estimated 93 percent of all breaches can be avoided if simple processes are put in place. From regularly updating software, training employees on the ins and outs of email phishing campaigns, and implementing multi-factor authentication, there are many effective ways of preventing cybercriminals from getting what they want. Cyberattacks are constantly evolving, but businesses should be aware of the most common types: MALWARE—software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client or network.

“Beingpayments.proactive when it comes to cybersecurity is the only way to protect what you’ve worked hard to build,” stresses Hogan. “It’s worth the time and investment to put these measures into place.”

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

She shares a story of a one recent phishing email that got through but was not successful. “An employee received an email from me saying I wanted to surprise some employees and asking her to buy $1000 of Amazon gift cards in different denominations. The email – that looked like it was from me, remember – asked her to let them know when she had the card. She didn’t feel right about this for some reason – thank goodness – and asked me about it before purchasing the cards. I can only assume if she had purchased them and let the fake emailer know, she would have been instructed to email the cards somewhere. And this is just one example of the types of scams going on outHoganthere.”says the bottom line is businesses can no longer afford to place cybersecurity at the bottom of the budget—not with cyberattacks targeting any business, regardless of size, every day. “No one is immune, not even small mom-and-pop shops. Here’s another recent example: The owner of a small family-owned business was speaking to someone in our credit department and happened to mention he had just paid our invoice online. The amount he mentioned was tens of thousands of dollars. Our employee knew we would not have sent a request asking for online payment of that amount and told him so. After they quickly looked into it, they realized it was a fraudulent invoice that mimicked the look of our invoice and email. Fortunately for this small business, the payment was able to be stopped. That is not typically the case.”

PROTECT AND BACKUP DATA. Regularly backup the data on all computers. Critical data includes word processing documents, electronic spreadsheets, databases, financial files, human resource files and accounts receivable/payable files. Try to do this at least weekly and store the copies either offsite or on the cloud. This will be invaluable in preventing a work stoppage if your system is compromised.

SOME CYBERSECURITY BEST PRACTICES:

PHISHING—uses email or a malicious website to collect sensitive information; usually appear as though they’ve been sent from a legitimate organization or known individual.

VIRUSES—harmful programs intended to spread from computer to computer (and other connected devices), giving access to your system.

TRAIN YOUR EMPLOYEES. Employees and emails are the leading cause of data breaches and are a direct path into your system. Employees should be able to spot a phishing email, use good browsing practices, avoid suspicious downloads, create strong passwords, protect sensitive customer and vendor information, and maintain good cyber hygiene. They should also feel comfortable speaking up and asking questions when they aren’t sure if something is legitimate.

RANSOMWARE—infects and restricts access to a computer until a ransom is paid.

Cybersecurity Threats

GET CYBER LIABILITY INSURANCE. A cyber insurance policy covers financial losses in the event of a cyberattack or data breach. It can also help cover costs related to the remediation process, such as paying for the investigation, crisis communication, legal services, and refunds to customers.

SIGN DOCUMENTS

66 SEPTEMBER 2022 | FENCE NEWS USA WORD DOCUMENT MARGINS You’ve probably had a situation where you worked tirelessly on a Word document only for the information you added not to fit on the page the way you want. Before you contemplate what can be deleted or adjust your font size, try manipulating the layout and margins of the page. From the Layout tab of the ribbon, choose“Custom Margins”on the far left. This option allows you to gradually decrease the top, bottom and sides of the page. Keep adjusting as you need until everything fits. If your page still needs some extra help, try adjusting the space between each line of text (under paragraph setting, line spacing). As a last option, reduce the font size.

SPLIT YOUR SCREEN Don’t have dual monitors? No problem. Separate your tabs to create two separate windows and adjust the sides of the window (just grab and slide) to divide your desktop into multiple screens. Mac users can also set up split screen view. Once your taps are separated, click and hold the green, full screen button to view all the options. You can choose what side of the screen each tab appears in and the slider in the middle of the screen will adjust the size of each window. Now all the information you need is accessible and you can save yourself the headache of remembering what tab had what information.

Take a casual approach to a virtual meeting and use FaceTime for a brainstorm session. Save time and skip setting up a meeting link, sending a calendar invite and battling microphone and speaker difficulties. FaceTime gets you connected right away and you can still share your screen for collaboration. During a call, click the Screen icon in the top right and choose“Share my Screen.”Navigate to the screen you want to share and after you finish, click the purple button at the top left of the screen to stop sharing. Keep in mind that while your screen is being shared other participants will be able to see any notifications you receive. You may consider muting any distractions before getting started. At one time or another, you have probably wished for more time in your day. Even on your best days, a series of small tasks can easily add up and leave you feeling accomplished but still not caught up at the same time. Sometimes simple tasks end up taking longer than expected because of tedious steps. Take back your time with these simple tech hacks that may also improve your productivity.

Gone are the days of needing access to a printer or fax machine to sign documents. Services like DocuSign make electronic signatures easy, but Adobe Acrobat Reader also allows you to enter a signature directly on a PDF. After you open a document, click“Fill & Sign”from the menu on the right. From the top dialog box, you can choose to sign yourself or add a signature. Use your cursor to sign your name or type in your name and then choose a font style you like. Mac users can also sign PFDs in the Preview app. Open the document and open the Markup editing options. Choose the pen or sketch option and use your mouse to create a signature and drag it to the desired location.

4. CREATE AN INVITING AND ENERGETIC WORKSPACE. Paying bills and filing important documents can be mind-numbing. Surround your desk with motivational quotes, family photos, and good-time mementos to make the space a pleasant place. Play music or listen to an e-book while cleaning. Brighten your surroundings by opening the curtains to natural light, if possible. Exposure to sunlight increases the body’s serotonin levels. Serotonin is one chemical used by the body as a mood stabilizer. Moderate exposure to sunlight helps stave off depression, a natural enemy to motivation.

3. REWARD YOURSELF ALONG THE WAY. For some, the routine tasks of life are easiest to ignore. Cleaning the house or filing reports is not usually the top item on anyone’s fun list, but they both must be accomplished on an annoyingly regular basis. Give yourself an extra 30 minutes of “me time” at the end of a couple of hours of tedious hard work. Looking forward to reading, watching golf, or working on a project that excites you can make the time spent on more routine tasks pass more quickly.

1. CREATE AND STICK TO A REGULAR SCHEDULE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Plan the night before to get up at the same time each morning and set aside the same amount of time for the goal you are working to accomplish. For example, if weight loss is the goal, appoint time each week to create a healthy menu and shop for the necessary foods. Make meal time a special undertaking and enjoy both the preparation and eating of good foods. Remember time for exercise as well.

5. PREPARE YOUR WORKSPACE WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS IN THE RIGHT PLACES. Whenever possible, keep needed items close by and always in the same place. Set up your work desk with a neat arrangement of office items within reach. If your work takes you to different job sites, find a way to keep your tools and supplies stored and organized so you can easily find what you need when you arrive at the next job. Time wasted gathering materials and putting them away might be enough incentive to put the task off until another day. Most importantly, go easy on yourself. We all procrastinate at times. Learn from your mistakes and resolve to do better the next time.

Self-motivation can be a misleading term because so many of us look outside ourselves to find the extra willpower we need for a challenging task. Whether it is keeping our home as clean as we want, losing weight, or completing a work project, we often feel we cannot get moving on our own. Tennis great, humanitarian, and Presidential Medal of Freedom honoree Arthur Ashe said, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”This is a good beginning for a renewed sense of motivation. These five suggestions might put Ashe’s advice into action and give you that extra boost of resolve.

2. BREAK AN ASSIGNMENT DOWN INTO SMALLER PARTS. When preparing for an important event like moving, going on vacation, or tackling a new work project, procrastination can seem much more appealing when the entire effort looms large ahead of you. If packing to move, divide the time you have into weeks or days dedicated to certain parts of the house. If readying for a big family vacation, do the same, but creating packing lists and deadlines for each member of the family well in advance of your departure date. If taking on a new work project, approach similarly and break down the bigger project into smaller jobs, and assign teams responsible for each job. Set deadlines for each of these smaller jobs to keep you on track for the bigger project. Don’t forget to communicate about progress between teams.

For many of them, these severe weather occurrences often result in damage to their homes and/ or yards. This upcoming season, CenterPoint Energy urges you to make safety the first step to your project by contacting 811 before any fence project. No matter how big or small the repair, contacting 811 to have underground utility lines marked is essential. Fences maintain property divisions and help residents feel secure, so after the damaging impact of a storm, this is one of the first parts of their property they want repaired as quickly as possible. Contact the free 811 service at least 48 hours before starting your dig project so there is enough time to have the underground utilities marked. Starting before lines are marked can be dangerous to workers, the property owner, and surrounding community. Damaging an underground line is not only dangerous, but also delays projects and can be costly to repair. CenterPoint Energy offers free trainings on safe digging practices and are dedicated to lowering the number of damages to our underground lines. If you are interested in scheduling a training, contact publicawareness@centerpointenergy.com.
