INTERVIEW

Interview with

Darrell Jacobs Clinic Lémanic’s CEO

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Founder, with Dr Véronique Emmenegger, of Clinic Lémanic, from Lausanne to Shanghai via Moscow, Darrell Jacobs is working on what makes up the very DNA of this prestigious establishment: passion, precision and friendliness. Here are a few secrets of this Swiss success story. BY LAURE DELVIGO A few years ago you won the highly respected Crystal Trophy in Moscow recognising Lémanic as the Best Aesthetic Clinic in Europe; how do you achieve such levels of excellence? The main qualities remarked upon were the quest for excellence in treatments, the comprehensive care offered to patients, the use of cutting edge techniques and consistency in our work. After Russia and Europe, over the last few years you have been developing the business in Asia, why is that? In China to be exact. After having been invited to Asia for a series of conferences a few years ago, I realised that the medical demand there was significant because, like a lot of so-called emerging countries, the health system could be improved and Asians are looking for the best medical solutions. We also noted a growing demand for aesthetic and anti-ageing consultations coming from this part of the world. How is a stay in Clinic Lémanic organised for foreign patients? From the start we made a decision not to have rooms in

the clinic. This way, the clients stay in a hotel and don’t find themselves surrounded by other “patients” or in a hospital atmosphere with all the unpleasantness that can come with that. We collect our patients from their hotel in the clinic’s own limousine. Then they stay in our VIP Suite while waiting for Dr Emmenegger – who, it must be said, is the cornerstone of the clinic – to come and take charge of them. Throughout the experience, a coordinator who speaks their language, whether it is English, Russian, Chinese and many more, is made available to the patient. Once the treatments are completed, our patients are taken back to their hotel where they can enjoy 5-star comfort. What are your clients’ expectations? Our clients’ main expectations are, of course, results, but ultimately more than that. They expect to obtain results that are their own. What I mean is a result that matches their own identity, their own look and not a result that might be the same for 100 other people. We have perfected personalised treatments which means that for the same treatment there would be 10

- 24 -

different ways of carrying it out on 10 different people and it is precisely this detail that is the difference that the patient is looking for. Because I don’t know any woman who wants to find herself at an event surrounded by 10 other women wearing the same outfit! This year you have created your own brand of cosmetics; what is its concept? There isn’t really a concept. All these years we have resisted doing what many others have already done; making a cream for the sake of a cream. We have invested our passion and our know-how into this. We have taken our time and it was during a trip to Australia, the birthplace of our medical director, that all the necessary ingredients came together by magic to start producing “La Crème”. We discovered bleeding trees, the crystallised red sap of which possesses incredible healing properties, and this was the seed from which our idea for a cream grew. But as I said, we took our time because it took several years before we found the right method and the right partners to make this. And now it is done.

You travel a lot; what are your favourite destinations and why? I really like Russia. The first time I went there was in 2003 and ever since I have gone back every year. For some unknown reason I like this language which I am trying to learn in my spare time. Dubai for the eccentricity of the city and the warmth it generates, and lastly Shanghai and its Bund for its hugeness and its contrasts. What are your anti-jetlag tips? I have one tip, and it is new. We have elaborated 11 specific micro-nutrition products with our research teams, under the name HEALTH BOOST™, one of which can be used to combat jetlag amongst other things. What is your mantra? Believe in yourself. Never look back except to learn and move forward looking to the future.

20 YEARS

20 years at the service of beauty

Clinic Lémanic is celebrating two decades of its existence. But rather than reminiscing about the past, it’s the future the founders want to talk about. With the development of better-ageing and regenerative medicine, the inauguration of a partnership with Swiss line and the launch of a brand of natural complements, the clinic appears more than ever the leader in aesthetic, anti-ageing and preventative medicine.

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

T

wenty years! That’s quite a feat as there are few aesthetic medicine institutes that can boast such longevity. Clinic Lémanic’s stability and growth can be attributed, first and foremost, to its two founders: Dr Véronique Emmenegger and CEO Darrell Jacobs. At the outset, they decided to concentrate on developing a unique know-how, combining medical dermatology and aesthetic medicine, innovation and professionalism. In 1998 they founded Clinic Lémanic, located in a historic building five minutes by foot from the train station, right in the heart of the city of Lausanne. In effect, the aesthetic medicine centre extended the dermatology practice opened by Dr Emmenegger a few years earlier. From the start, she positioned herself as a pioneer in skin laser surgery. After studying medicine in Fribourg and Lausanne, Dr Emmenegger worked in several Swiss University Hospitals as well as at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in the US. It was in the States that she was trained in advanced medical laser techniques. Dr Emmenegger holds a doctorate in Medicine and is recognised by the Swiss medical federation (FMH) as a double specialist in

Dermatology and Venereology as well as in Allergology and Clinical Immunology. Dr Emmenegger also holds a postgraduate degree in laser techniques. With the expansion, her medical practice, already focused on surgical and aesthetic dermatology, doubled up as a fully-fledged aesthetics centre.

A VISIONARY COMPANY 1998… Ever since it opened, Clinic Lémanic has continually developed the very best aesthetic medicine, drawing on the highest health and quality criteria and now two decades of experience. It would be no exaggeration to say Clinic Lémanic pioneered the dermatological and aesthetic use of laser techniques when they were only just beginning to make an appearance on the market. They were even shunned by doctors who considered this technology a threat to classic methods! And yet today “aesthetic medicine” has become common worldwide. This was not at all the case in the 1990s or even in the 2000s. Looking back, it has to be said that the co-founders’ approach was visionary. Very deliberately it has kept apace of all technological progress, it has constantly ensured it is able - 26 -

to offer the latest aesthetic techniques and has created a client product so personal it simply cannot be copied anywhere else. And it is because Clinic Lémanic has innovated in this way that it has logically become one of the leaders in today’s aesthetics worldwide. What’s more, the clinic makes sure it follows the rules of the medical profession to the letter by only employing competent staff and properly qualified doctors recognised and certified in their respective fields. This is what its current excellent reputation is built on and it has earned the clinic numerous awards. In 2010, Clinic Lémanic received the Crystal Trophy of Fashion Award in Moscow, naming it the best aesthetic clinic in Europe. In 2012 it was awarded the prestigious IIPP “Merit for Development of Technology in Aesthetic Medicine” prize, presented at UNESCO in Paris. This was only the second time such a prize had been awarded in the field of aesthetic medicine after having been given to the world-renowned Brazilian plastic surgeon Ivo Pitanguy.

INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION Clinic Lémanic’s reputation reaches far beyond the Swiss borders. With some 50 qual-

ified partners and employees, it has nothing to prove any more in terms of skills and professionalism which is why it attracts a large number of international clients who expect the highest standards and appreciate the clinic’s discretion. And so, over the years, Clinic Lémanic has developed a range of specialist services for patients coming from three main market sectors: the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the Gulf and Asian nations. While not neglecting its homegrown clientèle, Clinic Lémanic continues to expand through Europe and even further afield. In 20 years of existence, it has become an adult. It continues to build up its major areas of specialisation: surgical and aesthetic dermatology; aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine; plastic and reconstructive surgery and preventive, functional and regenerative medicine. There are solutions for all current aesthetic problems in its five expert centres: Hair Expert Centre; Smile by Clinic Lémanic (aesthetic dentistry); Light Therapy, Laser and EBD Expert Centre; Vitiligo Expert Centre and Beauty Treatment Centre.

KEY AND CUSTOMISED TREATMENTS For each of these specialisations, Clinic Lémanic has personalised solutions that can be adapted as much as needed to the culture and individual characteristics of its patients. Do you need a skin check-up? Nutritional advice? Beauty treatment that uses non-invasive methods? A small procedure (aqualift, cryolipolysis, permanent laser hair removal, botox or a little help with cellulite) or a more serious treatment (hydrotherapy detox, aesthetic surgery or hair implants)? At Clinic Lémanic you will not only find all the latest treatments to tackle cellulite, tattoos and wrinkles, but also plastic and reconstructive surgery for the face or the whole body. Because the clinic focuses so much on research and innovation, it is able to offer highly specialised treatments as well as an in-depth general health check up for patients. Personalised health care, based on an integrative approach, is one of Clinic Lémanic’s specialisations. By starting out with a check-up carried out by the clinic’s doctors, patients can find out exactly what treat-

ments are best suited to them. Tailored programmes are also available, including a general health check-up, an offer of treatments, a stay in a hotel, a private, chauffeured limousine service and a translation service into English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese or Russian.

THE FUTURE OF ANTI-AGEING MEDICINE Our physical appearance is increasingly becoming a concern for many of us, and throughout our life too. While we all know that living a healthy life and having a little luck to start out with, through inheriting genetic features, provide a helping hand in making us feel good about ourselves, other factors can still knock us off our game: social pressures, the requirement in some jobs to always be impeccably turned out, the desire to please in our own way or struggling with ageing. To help us bear up under such pressures, Clinic Lémanic is convinced that we need to feel good in both mind and body. So the specialist doctors have a responsibility and ethical obligation towards those who entrust their bodies to them. While just about anything

may seem technically possible, there are still some limits and a certain philosophy needs to be shared with the patients. That is why, as far as possible, Clinic Lémanic favours many non-invasive treatments and alternative therapies which have a natural and lasting effect without surgery. One of the priorities of this responsible medicine is the research into and development of anti-ageing products and techniques. For some time now, Clinic Lémanic has been developing a range of anti-ageing solutions. One range is already available and another is on its way. This work is being carried out in partnership with dermatology, aesthetics, nutrition and bio-regeneration specialists. All this effort is just part of the clinic’s desire to develop effective preventative and regenerative medicine, based particularly on molecular therapy. “It’s the future of the profession,” says Dr Emmenegger.

A BREAKTHROUGH IN COSMETIC MEDICINE AND BIG PLANS In a recent innovation, Clinic Lémanic launched an exclusive partnership with Swiss line, the Swiss company pioneering research into botanical cellular - 29 -

therapy and specialists in de luxe anti-ageing products for the skin. With its 20 years of experience, Clinic Lémanic has lent its expertise to Swiss line to create a regenerative cosmetic cream that is one of a kind. We can’t say anything more about it at the moment but we could perhaps give you just one hint: this luxury cream owes something to the personal journey of Dr Emmenegger who was born in Perth, Australia where she was struck during her childhood by the power of trees… Another source of pride for Clinic Lémanic is to have recently completed its plans to create a line of natural complements called HEALTH BOOST™, but once again, mum’s the word for now! Several natural products of the highest quality have already been successfully designed through this partnership. True to its quality image, Clinic Lémanic is ready to take things to the next level in 2018. On the agenda is consolidating its reputation and more innovation. A major project is in the pipelines and will soon be revealed…

INTERVIEW

Interview with

Dr Véronique Emmenegger a meeting with a visionary

A Swiss native, born in Australia, Dr Véronique Emmenegger has kept both her energy and her smile along her journey. Coming face to face with a radiant, passionate and inspiring person. BY LAURE DELVIGO. As a dermatologist and allergologist, how did you first become involved in aesthetic and anti-ageing medicine? It was a combination above all else of desire and luck. From the start, as an assistant, as soon as there was a more aesthetically related question, I would try to give some cosmetic advice. Moreover, I also had surgical training, having always been fascinated by the practical and manual side of things. Then the laser era began in the United States, so I started spending all my holidays over there! I liked it a lot and gradually started training alongside those who had first started using laser treatments, such as Dr Fitzpatrick, in San Diego, the father of laser resurfacing and a great mentor who unfortunately passed away in 2014. When I finished my training, I decided to set myself up immediately by providing surgery and acquiring my first lasers. Two years later, the clinic saw the light of day. How do you remain at the cutting edge in this field? There is no secret, it’s down to a lot of work! We have to work in order to create a synergy to achieve small scientific advances, working with old favourites, new technologies and fashion trends.

When injections began to be used, a lot of people would come with a photo of their favourite star (laughs)! However, we have to remain informed to keep up to speed with developments, while at the same time being able to resist transient trends. Fashion is also dependent on culture. Today, we follow this concept of “Perennials”, women whose beauty lasts, like Sharon Stone, Jane Fonda or Demi Moore. Young people, from the so-called Generation Y, are also taking better care of themselves. Beauty is also very important for Millennials. We therefore adapt our care to their age, so that it is lighter. This new generation is taking steps before reaching the age of 50. Their approach is different. How does it feel to be recognised by IIPP for “Merit For Development Of Technology In Aesthetic Medicine” after the great Ivo Pitanguy? It’s a great honour. I had the chance to meet Ivo Pitanguy several times and at the end of his career, he was always a character. It’s impressive what he did. He was the most renowned plastic surgeon in the world. The IIPP Prize which I received in UNESCO was a great recognition of the work accomplished.

What are your current projects? The creation of a cosmetic line, as well as a range of food supplements to complement the medical side of things, while still remaining natural. We are currently working with researchers in order to achieve an evolutionary result. We would also like to provide scientific advice over a very short period of time, in order to quickly solve conditions, especially for our foreign patients, who don’t stay with us for very long. That’s a big challenge! In your opinion, what are the key aspects in assuring any venture you undertake is successful? Firstly, you can never be 100% sure that a project you start will be successful. That being said, it is important to be confident that it will, as the first step in any successful venture is positivism; having high hopes, big goals etc. all fall into this category. Then there is the planning. You cannot throw yourself into such an adventure without having thought about the main steps beforehand. It is like trying to run a marathon without the necessary preparation; you can start, but you most definitely won’t reach the finish line. Last but definitely not least: hard work and perseverance. Any goal or - 31 -

project is, without hard work, destined to fail. Again, with the marathon analogy, no matter how prepared you are, running the full distance will require physical but more importantly mental strength. That moment when your body tells you, you can’t go any further, is when you have to push through. Only then can you successfully reach that finish line. One last thing is how you perceive failure. It is very improbable that you will succeed the first time around. If you fail, but get back up and start again, you have not really failed but have learned an invaluable lesson. You cannot fail until you give up. What advice do you have for the younger generations? I feel like this current young generation is one where goals and aspirations are huge. This is fantastic but one thing they must not forget is that perseverance and hard work are just as important as dreaming big. They have a slight tendency to forget that but they must remember that success is met only with the combination of ambition and hard work.

STEM CELL Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Stem Cell Banking

Why should we bank Stem Cells today?

Today is the youngest you will ever be again, preserve this moment in time for longer.

- 32 -

FINDING THE BEST STEM CELLS FOR YOU

TODAY OR NOT TODAY IS NOT EVEN A QUESTION

Adult Stem Cells can be found in multiple areas in the body including bone marrow, umbilical cord blood and adipose tissue (fat). Adult Stem Cells are the body’s repair system responsible for restoring the body’s important structures, tissues and organs. The scientific interest in adipose tissue-derived Adult Stem Cells is firstly based on the possibility of its collection. If you did not get the chance to bank umbilical cord blood, you can still collect bone marrow or adipose tissue to isolate your Adult Stem Cells.

Our bodies have a limited number of stem cells. Over time, even stem cells become damaged and lose their potential to differentiate into other cell types that regenerate our organs and tissues. Ongoing cellular damage by heavy metal intoxication, pollution and a poor diet reduces regenerative potential and puts stem cells into a state of premature sleep, limiting their ability to divide. Like all cells, Adult Stem Cells are comprised of chromosomes and sequences of DNA. As we age, our cells are subject to oxidative stress from external and internal factors, which amount to accumulated cellular toxicity. At the ends of chromosomes there are protective caps called telomeres, which slow down the deterioration of DNA. Every day that we grow older, cells divide and the telomere end caps diminish, making our DNA increasingly susceptible to damage and mutation. Every day that we age is a day we cannot take back. Cryogenic storage can “halt ageing” and ensure that the collected cells stay in their pristine state until needed.

ADVANTAGES OF ADIPOSE TISSUE-DERIVED ADULT STEM CELLS Adipose tissue (fat)-derived Adult Stem Cells offer key advantages over Adult Stem Cells collected from other sources: • Fat is easily accessible. • Fat tissue contains quantities of Adult Stem Cells that are at least 500 times greater than bone marrow. • Fat collection is a minimally invasive process. The procedure is ambulatory, has a short recovery period and can be accomplished in conjunction with other procedures.

THE YOUNGER THE ADULT STEM CELL, THE GREATER ITS CAPACITY TO DIVIDE, REPAIR AND REPLENISH ORGANS AND TISSUES. As we age, environmental factors and the body’s natural wear and tear adversely affect cellular health. These factors cause damage to our DNA with associated consequences to our overall health, vitality and life span. If we collect and store our Adult Stem Cells today, it ensures safeguarding of our current cellular age, while the Stem Cells are still healthy and “as young as possible”; this allows for the optimal quality in future cellular treatments. - 33 -

SWISS QUALITY Switzerland has been well-known for preserving people’s wealth for decades now. Today it has gained a worldwide reputation for the preservation of your most valuable asset - your health. Under the strict regulation imposed by Swiss Medic (Swiss health authorities), you can rest assured that your Stem Cell Banking will be conducted with the utmost attention to quality, security and discretion.

THINKING AHEAD The future of Stem Cells is promising, with its multifaceted applications thought to help cure what we consider un-curable today.

FACELIFTS

Haute Couture by Clinic Lémanic an innovative face lift without surgery

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Wave goodbye to the scalpel! Clinic Lémanic has unveiled an innovative nonsurgical facelift. The revolutionary concept which has been christened “Haute Couture”, is based on regenerative and absorbable threads for a lasting and natural effect. It is a new approach to facelifts without surgery for the 21st century. What is the Haute Couture face and body concept? Face lifts? Botox? In recent years, the faces of celebrities that have gone under the scalpel and then appeared distorted and swollen afterwards have discouraged people from turning to these methods in their search for a second youth. Nowadays, years of expertise and progress in medicine and science has resulted in the development of natural techniques available for specialists. Clinic Lémanic, which was founded 20 years ago, has developed the Haute Couture concept - a true revolution in the world of skin anti-ageing surgery. Very fine threads are placed in the dermis, on targeted areas of the face and neck, to stretch the tissues and prevent slackening of the skin. The results are impressive; from the first session, facial contours are reshaped and wrinkles are smoothed. Even better-the result is natural, facial expressions are radiant, your smile and looks are preserved. After several sessions, Haute Couture results in a harmoni-

ous rejuvenation of the skin. The technique has significant advantages: no scars, reduced downtime, no operations. What are the results on the body? Not only can Haute Couture naturally reshape your face and smoothen lines, this revolutionary method can also have a truly slimming effect on your body. The bust can be lifted and the stomach strengthened with a reduction in centimetres from the first session. The buttocks, thighs and arms, the main concern for most women, are remodelled to give an improvement in tone together with a reduction in cellulite.

How does it differ from injections such as Botox or hyaluronic acid? Botulinum toxin, better known as Botox, helps smooth wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. This results in a decrease in crow’s feet or frown lines. In contrast, hyaluronic acid fills wrinkles using this anti-ageing molecule that is naturally secreted by the body. Haute Couture on the other hand is not only corrective like the other methods, but also has a rejuvenating factor helping to boost skin quality. In this context, this technique goes beyond simple aesthetic medicine and can be said to be part of regenerative medicine. How long does it take for Haute Couture to take effect? By choosing this new type of skinlift you are opting for a makeover lasting two to three years. During this period, the shape of the face is re-sculpted, the nasolabial folds are attenuated and the neck is highly rejuvenated.

- 34 -

What type of patient is suitable for the revolutionary Haute Couture method? From the age of 30-35, the skin starts to lose its tone. The shape of the face becomes less well defined, wrinkles develop around the eyes, the lips and in the cleavage. As soon as the first signs of sagging skin appear, patients can try Haute Couture for a natural and lasting tightening effect over several years. This revolutionary method is also used to improve the skin texture, to smooth out the irregularities of the skin for an even, radiant complexion. This concept works on all types of skin, even the most sensitive and the finest, especially when other methods are not effective. Seek the advice of an expert from Clinic Lémanic without delay.

A TIMELESS AND MAGICAL ADDRESS

A PORTRAIT OF NICOLAS MAYAUD NUTRITION EXPERT

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Clinic Lémanic is where patients can find nutritionist and detoxicologist Nicolas Mayaud, whose avant-garde methods are proving so popular. His expertise lies in carrying out biological analyses of each patient so he can determine what change in diet would best suit them and bring them back to health and well-being. Let us explain. JOINING THE DOTS BETWEEN FOOD AND WELL-BEING

NUTRITION: A HOLISTIC AND MADE-TO-MEASURE METHOD

During the course of his career as a nutritionist, Nicolas Mayaud has explored the relationship between dietary habits and the quality of well-being. From 2012, he began devoting himself entirely to well-being and health by placing diet at the heart of his thinking. Trained at the Stelior Scientific College in Lyon, he has a nutri-detoxicologist certificate recognised by ASCA, the Swiss foundation for complementary medicine. After obtaining it, he began working as a coach in healthy eating and a nutritionist-detoxicologist while also giving conferences on healthy lifestyles and the benefits of massage, postures and gests etc. His vocation is to “give each patient the chance to take their health into their own hands again”. To do this, Nicolas Mayaud trained himself in motivational interviewing, a technique involving “questions, answers and reformulations” which requires “active listening, helping the patient face up to their reticence and motivating them” he says.

Nicolas Mayaud promotes an adapted diet, stripped of environmental toxins such as heavy metals and pesticides which have a negative impact on our health. His diagnosis favours a change in eating habits, based on the results of an OligoScan test which provides individual nutritional analysis. The OligoScan shows up “the presence of heavy metals in the blood” and can complete an analysis in just 10 minutes. The results of this heavy metal intoxication profile are different for each of us. “This excludes the possibility of a generic diet for every patient,” explains Nicolas Mayaud. So before detox sessions involving gluten-free menus, each patient undergoes blood tests to determine the strategy to follow and the goals to aim for. This is a deliberately holistic and progressive approach in the field of nutrition and it’s available at Clinic Lémanic.

REGENERATION THROUGH AN AVANT-GARDE APPROACH Since 2016, Nicolas Mayaud has been working at Clinic Lémanic in Lausanne, a reference in preventative and regenerative medicine. There the nutritionist continues to pursue - 36 -

his special method of establishing the dietary regime most suited to each patient so that they can rediscover lasting health and daily fulfilment and reconnect with that long-lost sense of well-being. Nicolas Mayaud is involved with prevention, with caring for and supporting people suffering from illness and in businesses with the “aim of raising public awareness” the brilliant nutrition expert tells us. This links in with his work as a coach, combining increased well-being through diet, the virtues of massage and professional performance.

Colonic hydrotherapy or irrigation is a procedure the goal of which is to effect a detoxification of the organism to improve digestion. This method consists of gently and deeply cleansing the large intestine through irrigation with tepid, filtered water in order to eliminate toxins and rebalance the metabolism. Colonic irrigation leads to great results in terms of renewed vitality, the decongestion of nearby organs, intestinal re-education, a better absorption of nutrients, a feeling of lightness, an improved quality of sleep and relief from congestion and inflammation. Fully supervised by a certified expert, this method is painless, reliable and safe. The procedure is done very discreetly in a private space with constant, medical supervision.

FACE OF PREVENTIVE CARE

THE FACE OF PREVENTIVE CARE AT CLINIC LÉMANIC Our grandmothers used to tell us an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but in the 21st century we expect slightly more sophisticated preventative care and that’s exactly what Dr Athanasia Papathanasiou provides at Clinic Lémanic. Using the latest techniques and a personalised approach, her aim is to spot potential problems early enough to be able to avoid them becoming serious, for adults as well as for adolescents. She tells us how. You are the head doctor of the general medicine and preventive care department at Clinic Lémanic. Could you explain the importance of this new model of medicine? As the head doctor of the general medicine and preventive care department at Clinic Lémanic, I have a particular interest in the quality of life and well-being of the patients, focusing on a people-centred holistic approach to health care. General medicine integrates a broad-spectrum approach to primary care. One significant aspect of the promotion of health and wellness that I give particular emphasis to is the prevention of diseases. Preventive care at Clinic Lémanic includes various

screening tests, periodic checkup health examinations and counselling according to each individual’s risk profile. The main aim of this approach is to identify risk factors and early signs of disease, but also to prevent future illness by early intervention. In what way does your professional journey show that you are the right person to manage this department? I am a general practitioner specialised in general medicine. My training and work experience include positions at various hospitals and medical centres in Greece, the USA, the UK and Switzerland. I have a PhD degree in Life Sciences and I am the author of

various scientific articles; I have participated in several clinical studies and have given several lectures. What is the demand for preventive care? Is it the same for Swiss as for foreign patients? The demand for a general medical examination for preventive reasons without facing a specific medical problem is one of the most common reasons for medical visits in developed countries. In the current world, there is an increasing awareness of the importance of preventive health examinations in order to maintain good health wellness. This trend is equally discernible among the Swiss and foreign populations. - 37 -

What are the patients looking for? Patients are looking for a knowledgeable doctor who is highly effective and can focus on their individual needs and provide a proficient and accurate solution to their specific health requirements within the shortest time possible. Patients also value being provided, after their medical examination, with clear, concise and intelligible information about their health issues. Patients appreciate a holistic approach to a health care that emphasises the improvement of their overall health and that includes preventive strategies rather than relying solely on prescribing drugs.

CRYOLIPOLYSIS Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Cryolipolysis could change your life!

Love handles, saddle bags and bat wings – what a pain! But Cryolipolysis is the very latest treatment coming unfailingly to the rescue! Medical Director of the Clinic Lémanic, Dr Véronique Emmenegger answers our questions about the new non-surgical technique everyone’s talking about! Doctor, what can cryolipolysis do for us? Adipose tissue, although it protects us from the cold, is also more sensitive than other tissue to intense cold exposure! Following 10 years of research, this procedure has been developed for treating localised areas such as love handles or rolls of unwanted abdominal fat. Treatment produces a progressive loss of fatty tissue following a onehour session. The technology is sophisticated but the resulting treatment is natural. What happens to the fat cells? Exposure to cold sets off a

process by which only adipocytes or fat cells are reabsorbed naturally. Several billion cells are damaged by the cold (about 4°C) coming from the machine, which are then eliminated physically by the body. Is it a non-surgical treatment? Exactly, cryolipolysis is a non-invasive, risk-free technique for reducing unsightly local bulges without anaesthetic or injections. It can visibly reduce unwanted rolls of fat and that reduction is perceptible, smooth and permanent. After treatment, slight redness is usually observed, lasting about half an hour and, - 40 -

more unusually, there is superficial bruising with no consequence. Improvements are seen as of two months post treatment but the final results take three to four months to appear. With cryolipolysis, you can go back to your daily routine immediately, although I would advise going easy on sporting activities for a few days as the treated areas may react causing very slight pulling sensations. Who is cryolipolysis aimed at? It’s ideal for people of any age and any skin type (apart from those whose skin is already extremely slack) who have slight local bulges. It is not a

slimming method, but a body sculpting technique. For you, what are the advantages of the cryolipolysis technique compared to the ultrasound for example? It’s the natural and comfortable aspect of cryolipolysis that I like. In fact the exposure to the cold creates an innate anaesthetics effect which is much appreciated by our patients. And are the results permanent? Yes, the treated fatty cells are destroyed for good.

HEALTHY FOOD

Poke Bowl the latest trend in healthy eating

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

After taking the United States by storm, here is the latest addition to the demand for healthy food bowls - the Poke Bowl. Like the Buddha Bowl, the smoothie bowl or even the bowl cake, the Poke bowl is proving a winner with its simple, tasty ingredients and appetising appearance. We take a closer look at this new trend.

T

he Poke Bowl arrived in France straight out of Hawaii to the delight of health food fanatics. Midway between the Japanese Shirashi and the Peruvian Ceviche, this new food trend is as much of a treat for the eyes as it is for the tastebuds! It’s light, detoxifying and photogenic all at the same time, presented in a single bowl. With its fresh and light ingredients, the Poke Bowl is beloved for its simplicity, as well as for its ingredients which are rich in vitamins and low in fat.

AN ALL-IN-ONE BALANCED MEAL The recipe is inspired by the tropical culinary traditions of Hawaii, which are long known and have been passed on from traveller to traveller. The Poke Bowl consists of a base of marinated salmon or bluefin tuna, on a bed of seaweed and rice, seasoned with sesame oil, soy sauce and ginger. But the secret ingredient of the Poke bowl is the added note of freshness from diced mangoes and avoca-

dos. It’s a healthy combination that ensures a serving of omega 3 thanks to the fish, as well as vitamins and antioxidants with the fresh fruit, and iron, protein and essential fatty acids which come from the addition of sesame and other seeds.

A MULTITUDE OF RECIPES The original Poke Bowl recipe is infinitely adaptable to suit all tastes, provided that the ingredients remain fresh, light and the final result is a visual delight. For example, to ring the changes, white rice can be replaced by black quinoa, flax seeds, wild rice or even rice noodles. The salmon can be alternated with bream, pollack, octopus or crab, all lightly cooked in a marinade. In place of avocado, the Poke Bowl could contain beetroot, cucumber, kale or wakame, with papaya, passion fruit or pineapple. Finally, for seasoning, try whatever takes your fancy from coriander, walnut vinegar or matcha green tea and a sprinkling of flax seeds or cashews. - 42 -

An innovative response to functional disorders

HEALTH BOOST Health Boost® is the culmination of in-depth research into how nutrition can affect the way the body functions. It comes under the umbrella of natural health and micronutrition, but is radically different from anything that has been available in this area for the last 15 years.

D

ietary supplements and natural health products always work in one or another of the following two ways: to better nourish cells and support biological processes (micronutrition) or by using the traditional properties of plants to relieve various disorders (phytonutrition). Both methods require that the product has a sufficient quantity of the active ingredient to obtain an effect. Micronutrition as we have been familiar with the term for the last 15 years is a

micronutrition that is based on this quantitative aspect. The vast majority of products offered today fall into one or both of these categories. They make it possible to obtain marked results for many conditions, with an effect that often tails off quickly when you stop using them. Health Boost® products are different and truly innovative, since they do not fall into either category. By providing nutrients at very low doses and in carefully selected combinations (from extracts of plants, seaweeds, mushrooms, min- 44 -

erals and vitamins), they act in a targeted way to boost the metabolisms necessary for the body to function effectively. Micronutrition Health Boost® works by combining a large number of carefully selected nutritious elements in a specific order in its active ingredients to achieve the desired effect: to provide the body with all the elements essential for optimum function and self-regulation, while avoiding saturation and competition at a cellular level, thus enabling the body to adapt and protect itself and function to its best potential.

Health Boost® micronutrition re-educates the body so it can once again take up, metabolise, and keep hold of the substances it needs, instead of making it dependent on the products with higher quantities of ingredients that substitute the body’s needs. We can therefore say that this is micronutrition with a “vocation” to re-educate the body to work on its own. A Health Boost® treatment does not nourish the body in terms of quantity, but teaches it to eat better to improve the way it works.

This natural molecule contained in our body, which is flooding cosmetic shelves in creams and anti-wrinkle treatments, is a particularly vital tool for doctors and cosmetic surgeons to restore

radiance to the skin and tone certain zones which can sag, like the temples or the nasolabial folds. It can even redesign the face’s oval shape acting like a real facelift. Hyaluronic acid has also been used to remodel and give volume to parts of the face such as the cheekbones. The effect of this molecule lasts from between six to 12 months. According to rumours, Gigi Hadid may have also succumbed to the urge to enhance her cheekbones which she didn’t feel were plump enough. FASHION

Tom Ford Substance And Style A daily phone-call for an entire month gave a young Tom Ford the chance to enter the world of fashion. Over 20 years later, and the man who ushered in the golden age of Gucci has made the move behind the camera with two award-winning and acclaimed Hollywood efforts, A Single Man and last year’s Nocturnal Animals. The age-defying 55-year-old explains the secrets to his staggering success in two very different industries, as well as revealing his love of pristine nature and the many ways becoming a father had changed his outlook on life. BYJAKE TAYLOR How did you first get into fashion? This sounds like a made-up story but it is true. I was in Moscow in 1984 and I was studying architecture but when I was building the models I was always more concerned about how the people looked like in them and what they were wearing, so it was one of those moments. That is when I decided I wanted to be a fashion designer. What is the essence of Tom Ford clothing? I really want the clothes to really last forever. If something is good it’s good. I want to create things that people keep. I want the best fabric, the best stitching, the best colours and the best cut. I try to make people as beautiful as the best they can look and feel the best as they can feel. How do feel about the speed and pace of the fashion industry at the moment? It’s a like a snowball coming down a hill and there is not much you can do to stop it. There used to be one shoe, one skirt and one look for a season but now everything co-exists. Now, everything is in fashion all at the same time. I don’t

know where it is going, but it is certainly interesting. Since we do have this snowball, we have to react to it and that is what you do. You made a great impact with your BAFTA award winning film A Single Man with Colin Firth. Were you nervous moving into film? What I wanted to do in my mind was very clear. I did not have any fear; it was something I wanted to say. It was very emotional but I knew what I wanted. I had a lot of moments of fear when I was editing. It was only after the film that people said things to me like, “Do you realise people were laughing?” - I had no idea. Where do you feel more comfortable in your work right now – fashion or film? I don’t think it’s easy for me to simply say one over the other – they both feed certain parts. Fashion is fun, it’s exciting, it’s thrilling but its ephemeral, it’s always turning and moving and changing. Film is forever. I create a new line every two to three months, and you have to maintain that pace and constantly evolve and change and change because that’s fashion, it’s a continuous spinning

wheel. Film is permanent, it’s concrete. I’m a commercial fashion designer, I’m not an artist and I have never claimed to be even though it is a creative art. For me, it’s very quick and I like quick. I like to move from one thing to the next in a certain amount of time. And fashion feeds that. Film is something different entirely. It’s a very slow process. Usually it takes on average, around three years, although it took seven years for me to make Nocturnal Animals. I’m hoping my third won’t eat up quite as much time. There’s the development, the script, the casting process, it’s long and arduous and something I’m very at odds with in the pace of my working life in fashion. But if you had to choose one… I must say, at this moment in time, the greatest artistic channel I have in my life is film. It feels like this is where I’m meant to be and this is what I’m meant to be doing. Fashion has been very good to me and I’ve carved a wonderful, very fortunate career from it and I will always be incredibly loyal because I’m a loyal person and loyalty plays a central role in this story. It’s helping me in my second career, - 49 -

my extension of my career by financing films. That might sound mercenary but it’s the truth, it does. How come it can take so long to put a project together, such as Nocturnal Animals? On that one, a couple of things got in the way. I have this little fashion business on the side, which keeps me busy, keeps me going! I had a son, who’s now four years old, so that sort of took the bulk of my attention. Kids aren’t just for Christmas, believe it! He’s my priority above all else and these are incredibly important developmental stages where he needs his dad to be hands-on, he needs his parents by his side so everything falls by the way. So life happened. It gets in the way. What I’ve learned over the years, no matter what plans you make, what blueprint you follow, life will always find a way to completely scupper that to pieces.

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Like A Single Man, style plays a central role in Nocturnal Animals, it’s the perfect combination of your two worlds. Well it’s actually rather unusual for me given what I do in my other profession, I’m all about substance over style in my filmmaking. Which goes against everything I’m known for, everything I’ve based my career on. After A Single Man was finished, I designed some women’s collections. Designing women’s clothes is harder than the film industry though. Fashion is so perishable, but with films you can have about a four or five year break. We don’t have time to catch our breath in fashion. If style is to play a role in my filmmaking, it needs to be a character unto itself. That can be said about Susan’s aesthetic, for example, and these pristine environs she surrounds herself with. It represents her disguise behind perfection, something that current culture values imbue on us, this idea that if you have this or that, your life will be perfect. And before you say it, yes I am responsible for promoting that culture. I’m very aware of that. I create these products, I create what is looked at as the ideal and I often feel guilty sometimes for that very reason. It’s central to

an inner conflict. I’m far more connected to the earth and to what really matters, than my image exhibits. I grew up in New Mexico, in a very modest, simple upbringing, that’s where I feel most comfortable. Not immersed in this idea of perfection. What you see is all an illusion. It’s an image, it doesn’t reflect real life, or at least definitely not my real life. When I’m at home, glamour has no part in my day to day being! Wasn’t your initial ambition to be an actor? I never wanted to be an actor… I wanted to be a movie star! There’s a marked contrast. I was enthralled by that world. Growing up in New Mexico, I transformed from a misshapen awkward frame into someone who was considered physically handsome, and I thought perhaps I might have a shot at making it. I went to New York to try my hand and quickly found out, I did not like acting one bit. I had some success with commercials and I think that experience has allowed me to work successfully with actors and create an environment where they feel comfortable to tell the story.

- 50 -

What would you say is your worst characteristic? I’m a perfectionist to the point of insanity. It’s horrible, really. I find myself telling people their eyebrows are not right or their breast implants aren’t quite the right shape. I no longer drink alcohol. Back then I was honest with a mean streak. Now it’s a different kind of honesty. At the office, though, I say what I think. My job is to inspire people to get the very best from people. my name has to go on the products so I have to say what I like. If I don’t like what people show me I am pretty blunt. You and your boyfriend, journalist Richard Buckley have been together for 25 years now, how does he deal with the fame? How does he deal with me? That’s the real question. But you would have to ask him that. There is none of the fame aspect at home though. What do you like doing when you are not working? Downtime for me is work. I love working. I love to work, it’s what I enjoy, but other than that it’s being in the bath. A lot of my

inspiration comes to me when I’m lying in the bath tub. I do it all the time. It’s just me and some hot water. It is there where I think about the things I am going to do for the day. There is always a note pad close by, sometimes it gets a bit drippy. But I am very involved with my work. I shoot a lot of the campaign photos. I did a lot of the last ones. I could not do it if it were not for the marvel of what you can do with computers but I also have the good fortune of being able to work with great photographers too. At the office, I surround myself with people who have great taste and energy. Well for my 50th birthday I went white water rafting in the middle of nowhere. We had the same toilet which was not even a toilet. We were in the middle of nowhere. I like to do things that challenge me. Plus, nature is totally perfect but absolutely imperfect. I like being outside. I’m not there to try to redesign a tree or change the shape of a rock, so it’s restful for me. That’s how I wanted to spend my 50th birthday, in the middle of nowhere.

The older you get the more you return to where you came from and for me that is Texas and New Mexico where you can literally see for 200 miles in every direction and there is something about that which gives me great peace. What advice would you give to young fashion students who want to be the next Tom Ford? Nobody has had more advantages than me. It is a struggle trying to start a new brand and I have so much respect for kids who come out of school and are successful at it. But when you start you have to have something to show people when you see them. When I was younger I stood in a lobby at an office block in New York where a fashion designer called Cathy Hardwick worked. I stood there with quarters in my hand, because there were no cell phones back then, and I called this woman every day for a month, all day long. I kept ringing the receptionist and saying, “I’m down in the lobby will you come and see me?” She saw - 51 -

me but later told me that she did not hire me because of my work but because I had really pretty hands. What does the future hold for you? I would like to make more films and I want to make more collections. That does not mean I won’t quit, but I am pretty satisfied. I’m very engaged in everything I do – I can see myself as an old man in New Mexico working as a sculptor with my dog. I’m very happy, I’m very lucky. Has becoming a father been central to your changing views of life? They were already changing in particular ways that come with age and increasing maturity. But my son was the catalyst, the ultimate life-change that you can only understand when you have your first child. It’s no longer just you and your priorities, it’s all about his. My values were unimaginably altered for the better.

CINEMA

Robin Wright

SHE’S ALL WRIGHT

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

It may have taken her 30 years, but Robin Wright is finally making her mark in life. BY KAREN OVERTON

N

o longer dedicated to looking after her now-adult age children, her portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards has been the crowning achievement of her career. But now she’s taken things to the next level with her recent work in Wonder Woman and Blade Runner 2049. These days she’s also exuding a greater level of self-assurance than she ever has. Wright is usually tense and anxious doing interviews, but now she’s much more comfortable talking about life as well as attacking the infamous Hollywood salary gap. Earlier this year, she publicly scolded Netflix (the producers of House of Cards) for having misled her about not being given equal pay with co-star Kevin Spacey (he is being paid $80,000 more per episode than Wright). Normally she shies away from controversy, but now she’s willing to fight not just for her own sake, but also for all women in the film and TV industry. That bold new perspective comes at a time when she’s taking on much more daring screen roles than ever. In Wonder Woman, she demonstrated an athletic prowess that surprised audiences who are

accustomed to seeing her cast in more standard dramatic fare. And more recently, she played a formidable police commander in Blade Runner 2049, the sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi masterpiece. Formerly married to actor/ director Sean Penn with whom she has two children - actress daughter Dylan, 26, and son Hopper, 24 - the 51-year-old is currently single and living life in Los Angeles. There, she is enjoying some much-needed “me time”, as well as pursuing a career as a director, having overseen several episodes of House of Cards as well as a short film documentary, The Dark of Night, which she premiered at Cannes. So, Robin, how do you feel about your sudden leap into the green screen world of studio blockbusters? It’s an interesting challenge. I’ve been part of the conventional film world for over 30 years and I still love it, but I’m looking for more out of the process today. I only want to work with creative and innovative people. I love these films where women get to be just as brave and strong as men - that’s where we need to be and where we should be.

- 52 -

With all the discussion about giving women a far greater presence in the film and TV industry, it must be satisfying for you to be able to play these very strong women? It is. Characters like Claire Underwood (House of Cards) or General Antiope (Wonder Woman) are iconic figures. They have their own moral codes and bring a powerful message regarding their respective ambitions and their mission in life. In the past, I spent a long time playing the angry or disappointed wife, or broken women. Today I can only say how grateful I am for the opportunity to play very different kinds of woman who are empowering and inspiring. Ten years ago, women my age very rarely had those possibilities. Why do you think Hollywood has been resistant in creating stronger roles for women and developing more stories built around female characters? It’s the kind of conventional thinking and reinforcement of stereotypes that have existed for centuries. Women need to achieve gender equality in all areas of society. If we can succeed in re-educating society and changing attitudes especially with younger people then we’re going to see deeper changes taking hold. A good example is gay marriage which is now gaining wide acceptance. But the process is underway and that’s a very good thing. There’s a big trend amongst actors today who are anxious to work on high profile series like House of Cards as opposed to trying find enough good work in big studio movies or small indie projects. The industry has changed a lot. For the past several years the medium-sized budget films just aren’t getting made anymore. It’s either hundred-million-dollar blockbuster movies or small art house films that are made for under five million where

you get paid very little and often audiences never see them. That’s why you’re seeing a migration to TV because some of the best work is being done there and there’s a lot of money to be made. Your extraordinary success as Claire Underwood in House of Cards practically coincided with your children reaching adulthood. Did the series come along at the perfect time for you? It was good timing. I enjoyed my life as a mother to my children and not working as much as I could have. Also, their father and I made a decision to raise them as far away from Hollywood as possible [near San Francisco]. But every moment I spent with my kids was totally worth it. Now that they’re finding their own way in life I can work on different projects and think about what I want to do. In recent years you’ve spoken about how you feel that you’re finally coming into your own as a woman. Is that a direct consequence of not having the daily responsibility of looking after two children? When you’re married and looking after two children, your life is very busy and you’re not necessarily thinking about your own needs as much. As a mother I felt an obligation to make the lives of two small children as beautiful as possible and that’s where my focus was and I don’t regret any of that. But the difference is that once your children have left home, you have all this time to look after yourself and your own needs. So, you begin a process of self-reflection and it kind of awakens you and you begin to find yourself. I feel like I’ve been on that path for several years now and I’ve finally arrived.

Given that you have two grown-up children, you still look stunning. Do you have any beauty secrets? It’s not really a secret, but the ultimate way of continuing to look good is to look after yourself. I think we all know that but it’s sometimes difficult to put the effort in when there are so many other things in life vying for our collective attention. I’ve always been active though and that comes as second nature after a while – I’ve always liked Zumba, always wanted to be outside walking, running, whatever. You’ve talked about Botox in the past as well. Yes, I’ve nothing to hide. I think the smallest touch-up can just keep you looking fresh. I’d certainly never stray into excess because that’s a path that’s difficult to move away from, but good skin is more about hydration, sensible use of products and, as I said, plenty of exercise. Sometimes as a society we can complicate the ideas behind well-being and health when, in reality, it’s very simple, if you permit yourself to find the time. Finding the time is easier now the kids are the ages they are, I guess, but do you sometimes miss the responsibility of looking after them? It still seems strange and I wonder if it’s the same for other mothers whose children grow up and leave the home. What happens is that you go back to having all this time for yourself which you used to devote 100% to your children. I enjoy the freedom but I also can’t pretend that I don’t feel sad sometimes about not being with them on a daily basis. But they’re both extraordinary individuals and I never get tired of telling them how proud I am of them. They made me a better woman.

- 53 -

You’ve often admitted to being shy. Where does this come from? I was very shy and insecure as a child. My parents divorced when I was two and after that I was constantly moving and having to deal with new schools and new classmates. But I had a hard time making friends and that reinforced a lot of my insecurities. Then I started modelling when I was 14 and I was travelling a lot, living in places like Paris and Japan where I was always on the go and looking for work. It wasn’t a very settled life and I never found myself in a place where I could develop that sense of security that some people just seem to have naturally. It’s always been more difficult for me. You’ve started directing some episodes of House of Cards. Do you enjoy being behind the camera? I love directing as much as I do acting. Acting can be a very lonely profession and as a director you work with all the departments and you’re constantly discussing each scene with the actors. I’ve always dreamed of getting the chance to be the director even though it’s a difficult job because everything depends on you. But I’m learning and gaining more confidence… it’s a new step for me. You also seem to have a much bolder take on your acting choices? Yes. Many years ago I would turn down roles because I was afraid and didn’t feel that I could take up the challenge. Now I feel ready to take on anything.

PERFUMES

Rare perfumes are to perfumery what Haute Couture is to ready-to-wear: a whiff that bewitches, aromas that collide and voluptuous notes which play and laugh together to take us away from the conventional. BY LAURE DELVIGO OLIVIER DURBANO LAPIS-LAZULI, PIERRE DU CIEL #12 A symbol of celestial forces and a lucky star, a sign of inspiration and intuition, alchemists heralded lapis lazuli as an element of the air and of balance, associated with the chakra of the third eye. In maths, the number 12 is known as a “sublime” number because the number of its divisors and the sum of its divisors are both perfect numbers.

This number always comes back to renewal and creation. Lapislazuli, as rare as it is precious, is one of the stones richest in legends and properties. It is comprised mainly of Lazurite with some inclusions of white calcite, blue Sodalite and gold pyrite. Its midnight blue colour evokes the celestial sphere, the eyes of the divine, and its

myriads of pyrite stars, sanctuary for the sacred souls. At the heart of this captivating edition we find Cypress, cloves, rose oxide, iris, ambergris, musk and cedar wood, notes dear to the creator who transports us into his wonderful world steeped in poetry. KILIAN NOIR APHRODISIAQUE For this most original of creations, Kilian Hennessy worked hand-in-hand with his perfumer, Calice Becker and the French chocolate maker, Jacques Génin to create a new scent. Chocolate inspired by the world of perfume, an overdose of chocolate heightened by budding jasmine and cinnamon bark. To add some light to this rather dark composition, Kilian

created a vibrant duo of Italian bergamot and cedrat, dusted with Laos cinnamon. The heart is absolute cocoa and Indian jasmine, forming an addictive pair. Finally, Indonesian patchouli and Australian sandalwood combined with Tolu balm give an amber structure to this rich and floral composition. Noir Aphrodisiaque is part of the Boutique Exclusive

Collection and was created for the opening of the first Parisian store. Addictive! Note the five other perfumes in the collection: Apple Brandy for New York, Single Malt at Harrods, Royal Leather in Mayfair, Lemon in Zest in Lugano and Pearl Oud for Doha. The bouquet opens with spicy and sensual head notes of ginger and cardamom. It then opens out to a woody heart of patchouli and cedar combined with mystic papyrus. We are then whisked off towards the frivolity of musk, the sensuousness of amber and the sacred

Heidi Lushtaku

Clinic Lémanic’s new star ambassador

In colour or in black and white, on the cover of magazines and in Dancing With The Stars, Heidi Lushtaku hasn’t put a foot wrong along a journey that has led her from Kosovo to Switzerland. The new ambassador for Clinic Lémanic arrived in Switzerland at the age of 7 and ended up on the muchcoveted podiums of Miss Switzerland. We had a chat with this multilingual icon of beauty and global fashion muse.

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

BY LAURE DELVIGO You are the new face of Clinic Lémanic. Tell us how you met its founders, Dr Véronique Emmenegger and Darrell Jacobs? First of all, I am very honoured to be the face of a clinic as well-reputed as Clinic Lémanic. Dr Véronique Emmenegger and Darrell Jacobs’s assistant contacted me after noticing me at the BHI hair-dressing trade fair in Lausanne. I then became the ambassador for Clinic Lémanic. I am very happy to work with Dr Véronique Emmenegger and Darrell Jacobs because they are two wonderful people, very committed and very polite. I admire the way they run their establishment and the success they have achieved with Clinic Lémanic on an international level. You have taken part in Dancing With The Stars, what did you take from this experience? It was one of the best experiences of my career. It gave me so many things. I was able to learn every kind of dance and their respective countries of origin. Through Dancing With The Stars I was able to discover Albania, having lived there for three months although I am of Kosovar origin. Dancing With The Stars also taught me just how much intense work is

required for a live show. It was mad having to put such a big show together once a week for three months. I loved it! In 2013 you were a finalist in Miss Switzerland; what effect did that have on you? It was very strange being thrust into the public eye overnight. I had never done an interview before Miss Switzerland so it wasn’t always easy. Nonetheless, it was great to make it through so many castings and get to the final! It was a very intense experience that made me grow up. I met a lot of wonderful people and signed lots of modelling contracts afterwards. Who are your beauty icons – more Kim Kardashian or Claudia Schiffer?! I love grace and elegance so I’m a huge fan of Romy Schneider, Jacqueline Kennedy and Grace Kelly. I have absolutely nothing against cosmetic surgery because it helps a lot of people. And practically all the stars have had cosmetic surgery. At a time of social networks and photoshopped figures, what’s your relationship with your body? I do a lot of sport because I love feminine curves and I like to keep fit. I am against - 56 -

this fashion industry that is looking for Size Zero women; it’s so much more attractive when women have some shape. And all those photoshopped images, I find it ridiculous to alter the shape of a body! It’s so unreal, people really must stop lying to themselves! You have an ideal figure; do you follow a special diet? I take great care of my health so I eat very healthily and I do lots of different sports. I am vegan – not because I want to have a great body but because I love and respect animals. Do you have a special beauty routine for before photo shoots? Yes, I always clean my face with cold water. I also apply Clinic Lémanic cosmetics and I try to have a regular sleep pattern. You travel a lot; what are your favourite destinations? I love the USA, Thailand and Italy; magical places with such lovely people. I adore their cultures, even though they are so different. What are your plans? I want to build up a business in real estate. I will continue modelling but mainly as an ambassador.

DIAMOND SERUM

When diamonds really are a girl’s best friend!

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

At Clinic Lémanic, we were so impressed by the incredible properties of Swiss line’s Brightening Diamond Serum we even arranged to premier it exclusively for our clients ahead of its global launch last autumn. So now it’s available to all but don’t forget – you saw it here first! BY SAMANTHA KING

W

e all know that diamonds add that extra sparkle, but simply wearing them is so last century! Because beauty is more than skin deep, smart women have been applying Brightening Diamond Serum – containing real diamonds – from Swiss line’s Cell Shock White range to their faces. And the result is amazing! The wonderful thing about serums in general is that they contain high concentrations of active ingredients plus their very small molecules penetrate deeper into the skin than face lotions or creams. This is why they are so good at targeting specific skincare concerns, such as dehydration, wrinkles and exposure to pollution when applied after cleansing and before moisturising. Serums feel light, velvety and smoothing to the touch, and their ability to sink right in leaves your skin feeling immediately more refreshed and radiant. Now imagine that times two! Brightening Diamond Serum is twice as effective because

in the one bottle you will find two complementary serums which combine to tackle the problems associated with an uneven complexion, dark spots, and blemishes and also refine wrinkles and fine lines. The transparent chamber contains the see-through serum. This imparts an even reflection of light to sublimate the complexion, firming and reducing any surface unevenness. This benefit is noticeable at once. But over time you will also appreciate the power of the pearlescent rose serum in the second chamber. This tackles existing dark spots or unevenly pigmented areas, creating a uniformly brighter skin. And just how does one serum (or rather two!) achieve all that? Well, the list of ingredients in the see-through serum includes diamond clusters. Literally, marine polymers “trap” micronized diamonds; the clusters’ stability is secured by a complex process which combines two polymers interacting together in the manner of “molecular Velcro-tape” to form an evanescent mi- 58 -

cro-capsule. The clusters burst instantly upon application to create an outstanding immediate, brightening effect. Thanks to the precious light reflection of the micronized diamonds, you will be able to enjoy a refreshed-looking complexion. Alongside the diamond clusters we find SYN®-AKE peptide – a synthetic version of the venom of the Temple Viper which has been clinically shown to reduce wrinkles and furrows, resulting in a more relaxed and plumped surface with fewer expression lines. In the pearlescent rose serum, we find Swiss line’s unique Cellactel 2, this time in a white complex. The difference between this and the classic version is that this complex also contains advanced peptide technology and botanical extracts of Rumex occidentalis extract and vitamin C. The resulting serum also helps plump out wrinkles and, more importantly, it corrects future pigmentation disorders at their origin. lightens existing melanin deposits and fades brown spots. Then there is the HD-White Complex which combines arb-

utin, glutathoine and ascorbic acid for a visible brightening effect. Innovation again comes into play here as this active is delivered via a liposomal complex. This is a targeted, fast-penetration delivery system to prevent the precious ingredients breaking down before they reach their required destination. Finally we have the Spot-Off Complex with its “dissolving” action that goes beyond that of melanin-inhibiting active ingredients. This complex delivers visible results straight away and over time to counteract both UV-induced spots and age-spots. Swiss line Brand Director, Custodio d’Avo, recommends using Brightening Diamond Serum with other products from the newly enhance Cell Shock White collection. This way, he says, you not only benefit from “the novelty of applying real diamond clusters to the skin”, you will also offer your complexion a “skincare regime that delivers truly HD results”. And where better to do that than at Clinic Lémanic?

SWISS LINE

the perfect combination

As you know, here at Clinic Lémanic, we strive to provide the very best treatments possible which is why we keep a close eye on what skincare brands are up to. By constantly comparing the products available, we ensure we offer our patients the crème de la crème. And this is the reason behind our new partnership with Swiss line. This revolutionary, anti-ageing brand’s science-led approach and Swiss insistence on precision and perfection make it an ideal ally in our quest for your beauty. BY SAMANTHA KING

S

wiss line has always been a forward-looking company, pioneering new developments in its field. While the man who founded it in 1989 is able to trace his royal roots back some 11 centuries to the first Prince of Russia, the motivation from the start was the most modern advances in skincare treatments – in particular an innovative means of regenerating deficient systems in the body by injecting stabilized active cells. At the time, such treatments were only available in a clinic via injections. What Swiss line did was to put the patented Cellvital formula (renamed Cellactel) into a range of skincare products people could use at home. The Cellactel 2 Complex currently used in Swiss line’s cellular anti-ageing products is

a biotechnological evolution of the original ingredient. Swiss line bridges the gap between medical and cosmetic skincare. Its age preventative and restorative professional and retail products use the best of Switzerland’s ingredients and research aimed at delivering measurable results and leaving your skin feeling luxuriously cherished – just the kind of thing those stepping through the doors of Clinic Lémanic are looking for. As Christophe Lesueur, Swiss line’s CEO, explained: “Developed to help improve the skin from a deep perspective, our products often contain more active ingredients than our competitors, making us a natural choice for Clinic Lémanic’s results-orientated approach.”

- 60 -

That enthusiasm is shared by Darrell Jacobs Clinic Lémanic co-founder and CEO, who commented: “We are proud to introduce Swiss line products into our treatments and retail area thus enriching the overall Clinic Lémanic experience” And certainly the combination of Clinic Lémanic’s best-practice aesthetic treatments and Swiss line’s award-winning innovative products is a winning one in which clients can benefit from a luxurious state-of-theart age preventative experience. That experience is embodied in the Swiss line spa expertise and anti-ageing facials available at the Clinic. There are seven treatments to choose from, all incorporating potent active ingredients to tackle specific skin conditions which Swiss

line identifies as: wrinkles/fine lines; overall need of repair and regeneration; facial sagging; sun damage, pigmentation and uneven skin tone; dry, uncomfortably tight, thirsty skin; impure skin and enlarged pores; sensitive skin. As for deciding which is best for you, each appointment starts with a skincare consultation with an aesthetician to assess your skin’s condition and fine-tune the treatment for the best possible results. During the treatments, which last from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, highly-trained expert therapists use Swiss line’s professional advanced skincare products. These products contain scientifically advanced ingredients, organic Alpine extracts and dermato-

logically-approved emulsifiers and skin-softening emollients. What they don’t contain are ingredients derived from animals, high levels of synthetic detergents and preservatives or genetically modified crops. This combo of extremely effective products and skilled beauticians provides immediate visible results with an emphasis on a long-term approach for lasting benefits. Whichever treatment you decide best meets your needs, you will begin with a “Tri-Phase Peeling”. This is because one of the most common skin problems is an excessive build-up of dead skin cells. The fruit acids in this triple exfoliation loosen and remove the layer of dead cells on the skin’s surface, revealing the smoother, healthier-looking layer below. Not only does the

peeling improve evenness, tone and elasticity, it also prepares the skin so that it is completely ready to absorb the products used in the next stage. After the peeling you might opt for the “Virtual Surgery” treatment lasting 75 minutes aimed at those in need of a general boost and regeneration. This involves a “virtual mask” to help deliver the ingredients to the face, stimulating cell turnover and renewal and helping erase signs of fine lines or wrinkles. Or you could opt for the Collagen Infusion to tackle wrinkles and loss of firmness. The marine collagen and hyaluronic acid in this unique face and neck mask increases moisture retention and firms up the skin. It is a youthful infusion that battles sagging head on.

As for the “V” Sculpture, this 90-minute treatment is perfect for those looking to redesign their facial contours. Known as the “architect” option, during this treatment the beautician is able to sculpt where drainage and slimming are desired, at the same time promoting density and lifting where these are needed. And that’s just a sample. Custodio d’Avo, Swiss line’s Brand Director, explains Swiss line’s ethos thus: “Our brand is set at the crossroads of science and style, offering treatments to women who have undergone invasive or non-invasive aesthetic procedures. ‘Medical’ no longer stands for cold-science… it stands for lifestyle and addiction to perfection!” At Clinic Lémanic, we couldn’t agree more. - 61 -

Giving you a film star smile in just a few hours A weapon of seduction and the secret of self-confidence, a smile is such an important part of the face. But what if your teeth are yellow or crooked? Unfortunately, many people are embarrassed by their teeth. With its SMILE concept, Clinic Lémanic can create a made-to-measure smile for you. A SMILE, A SECRET WEAPON TO MAKE YOU SPARKLE IN PUBLIC

GET A MADE-TO-MEASURE SMILE IN A FEW HOURS

Miley Cyrus, Kylie Jenner, Emma Watson, Blake Lively, Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Cruise ... All these stars have one thing in common: they have a sparkling smile that gets the photographers’ cameras flashing. But all these celebrities also have a secretthey owe their smile to a revolutionary concept: the installation of dental veneers. Because nowadays, a smile has become an important asset in society. According to a survey conducted in May 2017 by YouGov, 54% of French people believe that having yellow teeth is one of the worst defects in a smile while 57% believe a beautiful smile is a factor in success.

For many years, dental veneers have been used to correct flaws to give a whiter, brighter smile. With its SMILE concept, Clinic Lémanic unveils a revolutionary method with a new generation of ready-to-fit veneers. From the first session, they correct the shade, hide broken or worn teeth and conceal small overlaps or gaps. Each veneer is carefully selected by the practitioner and shaped and glued directly onto the enamel. As a bonus, the Smile veneers by Clinic Lémanic are the slimmest in the world with a thickness of just 0.2mm to 0.3mm - as thin as a contact lens! So there’s no discomfort, they just make you want to smile like a film star!

COSMETIC SURGERY

Hair Implants Without Surgery Two revolutionary methods to restore thicker fuller hair.

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Alopecia (hair loss) in men and women can become severe or embarrassing. There are several types of hair restoration methods available to treat the condition, but knowing which one to choose can be difficult. Exclusive in Switzerland, the Clinic Lémanic’s Hair Expert Centre offers comprehensive non-surgical hair transplant solutions. What is a Biocompatible Hair transplant (BHI™)? This is a non-surgical method for implanting biocompatible fibres, which are identical to natural hair in terms of their chemical, physical and mechanical properties. In a painless procedure using local anaesthetic, the very fine biocompatible fibres are inserted one by one to achieve the desired hair density. This implant procedure can be performed at any age on men or women with androgenic or cicatricial alopecia problems. What are the results? Bespoke aesthetic results are obtained immediately. Since the fibres are supple, flexible and strong, the implants are not only durable, but also convincingly natural. Can you explain the MicroAutologous Hair Implant (MICA™) method? This technique consists of extracting natural, healthy hair from the patient to transplant them into the chosen areas. Each tiny follicle (0.08 mm) is manually and painlessly extracted from the back of the head, where the hair is immune from alopecia, and grafted softly into the thinning or

The technique is also excellent for restoring or thickening eyebrows and for covering sparser areas in beards.

balding parts of the scalp. Hair regrowth occurs quickly and visibly in a matter of weeks. What are the advantages of this method compared to other surgical techniques? Micro-Autologous Hair Implants are a major advance in hair implant techniques and offer three main advantages. First of all, there is no - 64 -

visible scarring, unlike with the popular follicular unit extraction (FUE) or follicular unit transplantation (FUT) methods. This technique was developed by our specialist doctor who has 14 years of experience in hair transplantation. The results are very natural and convincing, and it is almost impossible to tell that the person has hair implants.

How should we choose between BHI™ and MicroAutologous Hair Implants? Both high-precision methods are perfectly compatible. For example, people who do not have enough hair in the donor area to extract the follicles for Micro-Autologous Implant can opt for the BHI™ method to restore density. Our hair health experts and specialist doctors will discuss the techniques available and elaborate a customised programme for each individual patient according to their personal goals. Micro Autologous Implants do not need specific care after the re-growth. For BHI™ patients, we also advise to opt for post treatment follow-ups with our specialists or the patients’ own hairdresser to keep healthy and beautiful hair.

REG 21- NEW AT CLINIC LÉMANIC

R

EG 21 is a new clinical regeneration approach using autologous cell injections to stimulate the hair regrowth and significantly slow down the hair loss process. The treatment can be done once or repeated several times and be a part of different hair programmes such as BHI™ and MICA™. This technique has no recovery time, is efficient, safe and free of side effects.

Glittering Shanghai Surprise

S

wiss watch manufacturer Carl F. Bucherer has opened its first monobrand boutique in Shanghai with a glittering ceremony. The ribbon was cut by Carl F. Bucherer’s CEO Sascha Moeri and its first Global Brand Ambassador, famed Chinese actress Li Bingbing, during a ceremony that included a gala dinner at the Portman Ritz-Carlton with the theme “Golden Moment: Celebration of Distinct Excellence”. It was a fitting way to celebrate the opening of the new boutique, an important milestone in the brand’s successful expansion in China. “Being the first Global Brand Ambassador for Carl F. Bucherer and witnessing this historical moment for this brand in China is my own personal ‘golden moment’,” commented Li Bingbing.

Located in Nanjing West Road, in the heart of the vibrant metropolis, the new store offers clients a unique brand experience and a wonderful collection of high-quality timepieces made in Switzerland. The boutique’s interior exudes understated luxury, accentuated by the golden, baroque-inspired elements of the logo and the distinctive brand imagery. Li Bingbing also features in the store’s décor, but set against an impressive backdrop of Lucerne, Switzerland, where the company was founded. This inclusion reflects the cosmopolitan nature of the Swiss town and, in fact, the opening of the Shanghai store underlines the family-owned watch company’s ambition to continue growing while raising the profile of Lucerne as a cosmopolitan destination. It is the 130-year-old watchmaker’s third monobrand - 76 -

boutique after Moscow and Lucerne, reflecting the importance Carl F. Bucherer places on China. The company has some three dozen outlets around the country but this is its first monobrand store and the first to feature Carl F. Bucherer’s new brand identity. “The Chinese market values tradition and the pursuit of an elegant, modern lifestyle. It means a lot for us to gain even more recognition here,” commented Sascha Moeri. Li Bingbing is the perfect ambassador for the brand in this respect. Born in 1973, she also has international appeal. Just like the watchmaker, after becoming a success at home she went global; the first film she made in the English language, Wayne Wong’s Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 while in 2013 she was named Asian Actress

of the Year by the Hollywood magazine Variety. And just like Carl F. Bucherer, she has a big heart; she is a goodwill ambassador for United Nations Environment Programme and WWF Earth Hour. Her commitment to nature and the environment echoes that of the watchmaker which supports environmental projects such as the Manta Trust which works to protect manta rays. Carl F. Bucherer is one of the few remaining family-owned Swiss watch manufacturers and is now into its third generation with Jörg G. Bucherer at the helm. Since it was founded in 1888, it has built an unshakeable reputation for quality and innovation. Timepieces and movements are developed and produced in the brand’s own workshops in Switzerland.

Breguet Iconic timepieces fit for iconic times

Sir Winston Churchill had several trademarks: his cigar, his glass of whisky always at hand, his bow ties and, of course, his pocket watch. Whenever out of military uniform, Britain’s wartime Prime Minister always wore his Breguet N°765, known as the “Turnip.” It was so much a part of him that the Swiss watchmakers produced a replica for the film Darkest Hour about the early days of World War II – it was unthinkable that the Churchill character played by actor Gary Oldman should be without the great man’s beloved Breguet! So what makes a Breguet so special? We just had to find out. BY SAMANTHA KING

- 79 -

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

W

hile the Turnip may have been the star of recent press and VIP screenings of Darkest Hour organised by Breguet in London and New York, Sir Winston is not the only historical figure to have sported a timepiece from the manufacturer. Other illustrious clients include everyone from the Duke of Windsor to Marie-Antoinette, as well as Rachmaninov, Ettore Bugatti, Queen Victoria, Louis XVIII and Czar Alexander I! The list gives you an idea of the great history behind the brand which was founded by AbrahamLouis Breguet (1747-1823) and it’s fair to say he got off to a flying start. After moving from his native Switzerland to Paris, he perfected the successful self-winding perpétuelle watches, the introduction of gongs for repeating watches and the first shock-protection for balance pivots. His breakthroughs brought him favour with Louis XVI and, after a sojourn in Switzerland while the dust on the French Revolution settled, with Napoleon Bonaparte to whom he sold his first carriage clock. More importantly, he became the go-to watchmaker for the scientific, military and financial elite of the time. Three generations of Breguet’s would succeed Abraham-Louis,

after which the company changed hands several times before being acquired by the Swatch Group in 1999. But whoever has been at the helm, the spirit of innovation and pioneering that has earned it such a prestigious clientele has been maintained. For example, in the 1950s, Breguet produced one of the most iconic pilot’s watches of all time – the Type 20, which became standard equipment for the French Air Force while just last year it stunned experts with its Marine Équation Marchante which simultaneously indicates civil time and true time by means of two separate minutes hands – an achievement few watchmakers are capable of. And the company has also branched out with collections of jewellery, the inspiration for which often comes from past clients such as the Queen of Naples and Marie-Antoinette, and delightful ladies watches encrusted with so many diamonds they are very much both use and ornament! In 2017, the company opened new boutiques in New York and Singapore and picked up awards in Germany and Russia while also partnering cultural events around the world, proving – if proof were necessary – that despite having almost 250 years on the clock, this watchmaker is still ahead of its time.

CHEONGSAM

TheTheCheongsam epitome of elegance

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

What do Nicole Kidman, Céline Dion, Emma Watson, Madonna, Kate Moss and Katy Perry all have in common? They have all been spotted on red carpets in that most iconic of Chinese dresses, the Cheongsam. Even First Lady Melania Trump donned a Gucci version for a State dinner when visiting the Middle Kingdom with hubby President Donald Trump. BY SAMANTHA KING

S

o what is it that makes this dress so special? While debates rage about the origins of the Cheongsam – it is variously said to date back to the Western Zhou dynasty, roughly a thousand years BC and the Republic of China period from 1912 to 1949 – what is undeniable is that it is innately elegant. With its sleek lines, high, Mandarin collar and slit skirt, it seems to suit all body types and, while instantly identified as a Chinese garment, it offers a touch of oriental glamour that Western women can adopt without looking like they are wearing fancy dress. It is also highly adaptable – alter the sleeves from fulllength to sleeveless, take that slit and the hemline a little further down or up, and you either have smart and elegant day attire or a stunning evening gown. And that’s even before we come on to the magnificent silks with their wonderful embroidery of birds of paradise or fiery dragons, of delicate flowers or entire landscapes. And then there are the colours; bright reds and blues, shocking pinks and jade green interwoven with golden thread and a thousand other hues.

Although the exact origins of the Cheongsam (or qipao) remain in dispute, all agree that the modern version of the dress began around 1912 when the Qing Dynasty ended and women sought a more practical and stylish form of dress. But it was in the 1930s, when Shanghai earned itself the nickname “the Paris of the East” that it really took off. Shanghai merchants began producing posters, calendars and the like

- 82 -

in which glamorous women in Cheongsams promoted cigarettes, cosmetics and other products. At the same time, Shanghai had become a popular destination for Westerners – at last they could glimpse this mysterious and magical China. As a result, the dress went not only national, but international! And Hollywood caught the bug too. Anna May Wong is often described as the first

Chinese American film star and her costumes in films such as Limehouse Blues (1934) and Shanghai Express (1932) with Marlene Dietrich sparked the trend stateside. Soon such icons of glamour as Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly were to be seen in the dress – proving such a classic works as well on a blonde as on a brunette! And through the decades this fascination for the Cheongsam has never waned. Fashion designers have often referenced the Oriental style, take, for example, John Galliano’s 1997 fall collection for Dior or Tom Ford for YSL in 2004. Such is the influence, New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute held an exhibition in 2015 entitled “Chinese Whispers: Tales of the East in Art, Film, and Fashion” featuring sublime exhibits. And in September, the Hong Kong Film Archive opened a new exhibition, “The Stars, the Silver Screen and the Qipao”, featuring 24 exquisite examples of the dress to have been used on film sets. Having lasted more than a century in its modern form without ageing a day, we think it’s pretty safe to say the Cheongsam will be with us for a long time yet!

L’HERMITAGE

from the Bührle Collection at the Fondation de L’Hermitage The prestigious hermitage foundation in Lausanne exhibited masterpieces from the Bührle Collection, truly exceptional works of art bringing together the greatest French Impressionist and post-Impressionist painters: Monet, Modigliani, Gauguin, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Renoir and many other brilliant artists. BY OLIVIER LIMONTA

T

he Hermitage Foundation has been housed since 1984 in a beautiful villa above the city of Lausanne, on the shores of Lake Geneva. The Foundation is home to several hundred masterpieces from major Swiss private collections, which it has been regularly exhibiting to its millions of visitors for more than 30 years. Its expertise is recognised internationally, and is an emblem of Swiss excellence. This exhibition displayed the spectacular works of the private E. G. Bührle collection from Zurich, featuring the greatest French painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The works were collected in the 1950s by Emil Georg Bührle (1890-1956), who was, like many Swiss businessmen, an industrialist and great collector of art. The heart of the exhibition traced the glorious periods of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, bringing together masterpieces that are sometimes little known to the general public. The first room immersed visitors in Impressionist portraits, with Renoir (Portrait of Alfred Sisley, 1864), Courbet (Portrait of the sculptor Louis-Joseph Leboeuf, 1863), and also including Fantin-Latour (Self-portrait seated, palette in hand, 1861). In the second room they were plunged into the romanticism of Delacroix (Christ on the Sea of Galilee, 1853) and Daumier (The two lawyers, 1855-1857), then the visit ended with an climax of works by the geniuses of the Belle Epoque, - 84 -

in the early 20th century: Braque (The Port of Estaque, around 1906), Picasso (Barcelona at night, 1903) and Toulouse-Lautrec (Messaline, 1900-1901). Other masterpieces on display included Cezanne (The Boy in the Red Waistcoat, 1888-1890), Pissaro (The Conversation, Louveciennes, 1870) and Van Gogh (The Sower with Setting Sun, 1888). Edouard Manet was one of the most represented artists in the E G Bührle collection, with no fewer than six works on display. The painting most symbolic of his striking and uncompromising realism is probably Le Suicidé (circa 1877), presented with an astounding intensity in the exhibition. The great Amedeo Modigliani was also on display in Lausanne with his famous Reclining Nude (1916), showing a naked woman lying lasciviously on a couch. Dating from Modigliani’s Parisian era, this work scandalised the French capital at the time and was withdrawn by the police! Among the other masterpieces was The Offering (1902) by Paul Gauguin, who, along with Van Gogh, is considered one of the “fathers of modernity”. It is a dreamlike painting with a background of the natural paradise of Polynesia, where the calm well-being of everyday life delighted visitors to the collection. It then left to be shown in Japan.

RUSSIAN JEWELLER

The Fabergé

Story

Who has not at least heard of the famous Fabergé eggs? The origin of these little gems is, however, less well-known. Their name comes from their creator, PeterCarl Fabergé, a Russian jeweller born in 1846 and based in Saint Petersburg. After taking over the family business in 1872, in just a few years Fabergé managed to build up such a reputation for his jewellery that he caught the eye of Czar Alexander III. BY OLIVIER LIMONTA

- 87 -

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

I

n 1885, the Czar gave Fabergé a very special commission: a gift to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his betrothal to his wife, the Empress Maria Fedorovna. A daughter of the Royal House of Denmark, the young Maria’s imagination was captivated during her childhood by a mysterious egg, designed in the 18th century, which belonged to one of her aunts. Based on this distant memory, Fabergé came up with the idea of creating a jewel in the shape of an egg, probably advised by Alexander III himself. The egg had to be ready for the Easter festivities, which is as important in the Russian Orthodox Church as Christmas. The tradition of bringing coloured eggs to the church to receive a blessing was long-established. These eggs were then offered to friends and family. Fabergé managed to meet the deadline and Alexander III offered his empress a golden egg for Easter 1885. Maria Fedorovna was delighted when she opened the white shell to discover a golden hen which itself could be opened to reveal a diamond replica of the Imperial crown and a little ruby necklace. This was Peter-Carl Fabergé’s moment of glory. The jeweller was named Goldsmith by Appointment to the Crown and was given complete freedom to design future eggs for the Czars.

- 88 -

After that, Fabergé used his imagination and surrounded himself with the finest craftsmen to create new eggs every year until 1916 when he was forced into exile by the Bolshevik Revolution. The eggs were not just for Easter but also for special events such as, in 1911, the 15th anniversary of Nicholas II’s ascension to the throne. Each Fabergé egg has to contain a surprise, like the first egg for the Empress. All the creativity of Russian jewellers was mobilised to produce the desired effect such as, for instance, a miniature clockwork train in gold, ruby and crystal (the Trans-Siberian Railway egg, 1900), or a little mechanical swan (the Swan egg, 1906). The Winter egg (1913), made from diamond-studded rock crystal, opens up to reveal gold edelweiss and was sold by Christie’s in New York in 2002 for more than €9 million. In all, 43 of the 50 eggs are to be found in museums and private collections. Today, the House of Fabergé continues the tradition by offering fine pieces for connoisseurs. These creations use the most beautiful precious stones in the world and explore the inexhaustible art of colours. These works are available at outlets such as Fabergé and Harrods in London, in Lausanne, New York and Hong Kong. - 89 -

Darrell Jacobs shares his globe-trotting secrets

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Being CEO of an establishment as prestigious as Clinic Lémanic is hard work but takes co-founder Darrell Jacobs around the world. Here are a few of his top tips to enjoy a brief moment of relaxation in style after a busy day in far-flung spots. BUDDHA-BAR DUBAI

THE RITZ-CARLTON MOSCOW

THE BOLSHOI BY NOVIKOV MOSCOW

AU CHAT NOIR LAUSANNE

One of the biggest Buddha-Bars in the world is to be found in the luxurious Grosvenor House in the heart of the Dubai marina. Spread over two stories, the restaurant is just majestic with its spacious dining room and its sumptuous overhanging red and gold chandeliers. The view of the marina from the large bay windows is quite exceptional and really turns the dining experience into something else.

If you want to get a feel for what life must have been like for the Russian Czars then try the gilded Ritz-Carlton Moscow. Just across from the Red Square, all the splendour of Imperial Russia is to be enjoyed here, along with some of the finest accommodation in the city.

When it comes to fine dining in Moscow, the Bolshoi by Novikov is hard to beat. Even before you settle in to your Ralph Lauren-designed chair and look at the menu you can feast your eyes on the incredible and exclusive collection of modern art paintings and sculptures that are dotted around the restaurant. Just around the corner from the Bolshoi Theatre, the cuisine is Franco-Russian and the whole experience can be summed up in one word: opulent.

Recommended by the very select Guide Michelin, this brasserie just a short walk from the theatre is however reasonably priced. Apart from the friendly welcome, the Chat Noir is charming because of its atmosphere of a bustling Parisian bistro. The menu is overseen by chef Stéphane Chouzenoux and the cooking is inspired by fresh, seasonal market produce with a leaning towards French-Swiss flavours. A special mention must go to the deep-fried courgette flowers stuffed with scarmorza, which are simply delicious. Au Chat Noir is that rare combination of a homely feel with elegantly prepared dishes. Highly recommended!

HÔTEL COSTES PARIS

THE RITZ-CARLTON SHANGHAI PUDONG

THE RITZ-CARLTON HONG KONG

LE LYRIQUE LAUSANNE

For a truly Parisian art experience, I highly recommend the Hôtel Costes. This is a masterpiece of Jacques Garcia, interior designer, full of wonderful features such as the sound gallery, a fireplace where you can sip afternoon tea, and a patio that’s perfect for an alfresco lunch.

The Ritz-Carlton chain is one you can always rely on but what I really appreciate is that each establishment has its own character. For instance, the Shanghai Pudong is delightfully nostalgic with its Art Deco styling. It’s like stepping into another era – and yet it couldn’t be more conveniently located in the heart of Shanghai’s commercial and financial centre. Because it occupies the top floors of a skyscraper it also offers fantastic views of this fascinating city.

If you like ticking things off lists then try the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong; it’s got the highest bar in the world! The rooftop OZONE sits 490 metres above sea level and really is in a class of its own; and what I really love is that its rooms offer great city harbour views.

You will find Le Lyrique in the centre of Lausanne, handily close to the train station, the opera house and pedestrian shopping streets. What used to be a typical Vaud café was totally transformed in 1997. The décor is now more Parisian bistro than Swiss city while the menu is delicious mix of French and Greek cuisine. The finest Greek wines also find their way onto the wine list, alongside French and Swiss vintages. You will find the staff at Le Lyrique professional and the service polished and attentive. The owner, Mr. Fotis Stalikas a Greek national himself, is always there to satisfy the client’s every need.

SWISS PALACE

The

Beau-Rivage Clinic Lemanic Magazine

Palace The magnificent Beau-Rivage Palace in Lausanne needs no introduction. For almost 160 years it has been leading the way in luxury hotels. The elegant, six-storey building rises like a homage to the Belle Époque, taking your breath away as soon as you arrive. And as if you can’t believe your eyes, the entire building is repeated in a reflection in the crystalline waters of Lake Geneva that spreads out before it like a fairy tale welcome mat. This really is the lap of luxury. BY SAMANTHA KING

f you have ever fantasised about appearing in an Agatha Christie film then the Beau-Rivage Palace is a must. From its opening in 1861, this hotel was designed to host the elite and past guests include figures such as Coco Chanel, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Noel Coward. While the hotel has kept up with the times, providing every convenience for the 21st century guest, the Art Deco and Neo-Baroque architectural wonders have been faithfully preserved, leaving you feeling like you might bump into Hercule Poirot as you sip a cocktail in the retro-chic bar or take tea on the terrace overlooking the lake. The Beau-Rivage Palace boasts 168 rooms, including 34 suites. They were recently given a makeover by Pierre-Yves Rochon. As you would expect of an interior designer of such renown, the result is an elegant opulence with only the finest materials used: silks, marble and Murano glass. The tones are light yet warm with every last detail considered. To make you feel at home, the “Léman” junior suites, ranging in size from 65 m² to 75 m² are made up of two rooms: a bedroom and a living room, with the possibility of connecting rooms. The balconies look out onto the stunning landscape, with the lake in front of the hotel and the Alps all around. The140m² Imperial Palace Suite with its 80m² terrace is the height of luxury. The rooms (a living room, dining room,

bedroom and bathroom) are laid out in in an imposing Empire style. Every detail exudes sophistication, from the gold leaf adorning the taps and sumptuous wood floors to the silk hangings, porcelains and Art Deco designs in a nod to Asia. The original building and the second wing added in 1908 are connected by a magnificent rotunda. The majestic, 430m² Sandoz room, with its stunning stained-glass dome and ornate carving, provides the ultimate venue for events such as ball. As for weddings, this really is a fairy tale location, especially as guests can also enjoy grounds stretching out over four hectares. And given that staff here are highly trained and perform their duties impeccably, this really will be the best day of your life. Should you decide to stay on for your honeymoon, perhaps in the romantic Lavaux Suite with its rooftop terrace, you would be able to enjoy a meal in three Michelin-starred chef, Anne-Sophie Pic’s restaurant. It has two Michelin stars itself and when you peruse the menu it’s easy to see why. There are white truffles from Alba, scallops from Normandy, Angus beef from Ireland and crayfish from Lake Geneva. Anne-Sophie Pic’s trademark creativity comes through in dishes such as the Abalone from Brittany, served with grilled leek and Kombu seaweed broth with tarragon and Matcha tea.

JAZZ FESTIVAL

Montreux

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

An enchanted break for an unparalleled festival Over the last half century, the Montreux Jazz Festival has become a not-to-be-missed date for the summer, bringing together artists and the public against a backdrop of idyllic countryside. Let’s take a closer look at this amazing festival. BY OLIVIER LIMONTA

- 96 -

- 97 -

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

AN ECLECTIC PROGRAMME FOR A UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE The 51st edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival was the latest chapter in a story that began half a century ago, in 1967, on the banks of Lake Geneva in a small town in Vaud. Every summer, for two weeks, music-lovers converge on this peaceful town of 26,000 inhabitants, renowned for its quality of life. The Montreux Jazz Festival has grown in importance year on year to become an iconic event drawing crowds of 250,000. They come to delight in performances by internationally-known artists and to spot up-and-coming new talents. Because, despite what many may think, the Montreux Jazz Festival is open to all kinds of music in an eclecticism demanded by both the public and organisers. Despite its size, Montreux strives to maintain a feeling of intimacy by restricting

performances to smaller auditoriums that can offer both comfort and remarkable acoustics.

A JEWEL ON THE SWISS RIVIERA The festival’s organisers also stress the convivial and bucolic aspects of the event. It has to be said that the Montreux area is part of the Vaud Riviera which has always attracted visitors. Back in the 18th century, artists had already been won over by the banks of Lake Geneva and the view of the foothills of the Alps; Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Igor Stravinsky and Fyodor Dostoevsky among them. Others would follow in their wake a little later: Vladimir Nabokov, Charlie Chaplin, Louis Ferdinand Ramuz and James Mason. Freddie Mercury even recorded his last album at Montreux, evocatively entitled Made in Heaven, and he said of the town: “If you want peace of soul, come to Montreux.”

- 98 -

Indeed the Montreux Jazz Festival is set in stunning landscape, offering wonderful panoramas of the lake and an unparalleled view of the Vaud Alps and the mountains of Chablais, Lavaux and the Jura. And the icing on the cake is that the town of Montreux enjoys a micro climate because of its south-west exposition which protects it from winds. But it happily makes way for a breath of fresh air brought in by the concerts performed on a variety of stages.

AN UNINTERRUPTED PARADE OF GREAT ARTISTS FROM THE START The Montreux Jazz Festival has always headlined some of the greatest names in jazz such as the legendary Duke Ellington, Sonny Rollins, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Oscar Peterson, Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles and Bill Evans. Miles Davis came eight times between 1971

and 1991, while B. B. King performed here more than 20 times. Quincy Jones, patron of the event, was co-producer for the 1991 to 1993 editions. Montreux has also made room, over the years, for some major artists from other fields, for example Santana, Deep Purple and Eric Clapton, while yet more attended Montreux Super Pop between 1969 and 1974. Bands for this event included The Doors, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. And current lineups are just as impressive – as was evident at the 51st edition which saw the likes of Beth Ditto, Benjamin Biolay, Usher and The Roots and other famous contemporary jazz artists. And the event continues to open up to other musical repertoires (rock, pop, electro and R ‘n’ B), constantly enhancing the festival to the huge delight of spectators.

ART

ZEN Clinic Lemanic Magazine

THE SELF-TAUGHT ARTIST TEARING UP THE RULE BOOK

Some eight years ago, the renowned self-taught artist Zen began work on a new series of amazing pieces that have brought him huge success worldwide. We took a closer look at the man who seems to get everything right. © Damien Chamcirkan

A CUTTING-EDGE AND COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TECHNIQUE Zen uses an entirely original technique in the creation of the majestic black and white portraits upon which he has built his reputation in recent years. Inspired by a method used for working marble during Roman times, the artist has invented the technique of sculpting earthenware. This technique enables him to obtain the exact shapes he desires from the earthenware which he then puts together in a sort of harmonious marquetry to create highly detailed and stunning works. This painstaking method means it takes more than a month to produce each sculpture but that sense of detail and of meticulous precision is how Zen comes up with a result bordering on perfection.

IT ALL STARTS WITH INSPIRATION To create his portraits, the artist seeks inspiration in a great number of photos and then lets his imagination do the rest. The sculptures that he produces also evolve depending on how he feels and what emotions he wishes to convey. And since, for him, the portraits are a wonderful heritage, Zen takes commissions from those who appreciate his work. But he also pays tribute to celebrities such as Pedro Almodóvar, John Travolta and Will Smith through portraits co-signed by both artist and subject. Zen likes working in black and white and all shades of grey in between, to create works that will never go out of fashion and that can adapt to everyone’s taste and interior. These are timeless works that art lovers simply cannot get enough of!

JEWELLERY FOR THE SOUL

Inspired and inspiring. These are the words that come to mind when you see the jewellery designed by Christina Rasmussen featuring lines of soft colours, made of tourmaline, jade, turquoise, coral and pearls. She opens a window on her unique world. BY QUITTERIE PASQUESOONE JEWELLERY: A LASTING PASSION Christina Rasmussen is truly a woman with a passion. The mother of two children recalls that she has always loved jewellery. “For as long as I can remember, I have always created necklaces, bracelets and earrings ... for myself and for others. I think I have inherited this passion from my grandmother. Her father worked with precious stones and she wore jewellery herself every day. As soon as she managed to save up some money, she put it aside to buy more!” she jokes. It was from this undying love for jewellery that her eponymous company was born. That was four years ago. “It is a decision that I never regretted,” says the designer.

COLLECTIONS WHICH CELEBRATE WOMEN A sensitive woman, who enjoys calm and harmony in all things, Christina Rasmussen designs jewellery that resembles herself. “I love precious stones and pearls and I design my creations according to their colours and their meanings. My aim is to pay tribute to the sensuality of women through my jewellery. I want to create pieces that make women even more sen-

sual, more beautiful and more special.” With her refined and unique jewellery, this true artist also celebrates the beautiful things of life. “I find my inspiration everywhere,” she says. “In flowers, in love, in romantic scenes in films, in soft music... everywhere!”

EASY TO WEAR JEWELLERY Christina Rasmussen also wants her designs to be able to worn every day. “You can wear them every day, with an evening gown or with a pair of ripped jeans!” And that’s not all-jewellery should also reflect the mood of the wearer: “It’s like the mirror of your soul, of your emotional situation. This is very important to me and that is how I design each collection. “Bottled Love”, for example, is a small bottle to be worn around her neck, close to the heart. Each woman can slip a personal memory into it like a love letter, a child’s tooth.” These are beautiful collections for every emotion - all that remains is for each person to find the item of jewellery that suits them, depending on the occasion. But with so much beauty and inspiration, it’s a safe to say that it won’t be difficult.

Cutting-edge looks, swagger and glamour: all of the focus is on Natalia Legg & Maria Opuni!

F

ar from the Volga, among the flashbulbs, spotlights and top models, the beautiful Natalia Legg, who comes from cold climates, met the gorgeous Maria Opuni, a model from Ghana. A shared passion for their work as models, and an appearance on a catwalk in Milan, wove a magic spell, creating a powerful attraction between these two women from completely different worlds. A combination of fiery temperament and total serenity - the Sun Queen with her warm smile and the Snow Queen with her regal looks - the pair have forged the bonds of a precious friendship over more than 20 years!

IRON FISTS AND VELVET GLOVES The prestigious Swiss modelling agency, Kai Zen, came about as a result of their meeting in 2006. It supplies top models as well as dreams of glory. The agency transforms every shoot into a work of art and owes its success to the expertise of these

two models, as well as their skill in managing the talent and winning the support of the most dazzling brands. Heads in the stars and feet on the ground, one eye in the viewfinder, the other in front of the lens, Natalia and Maria rise to the challenge with Kai Zen, but also with some ambitious projects! Their latest challenge is the Ice and Fire Project!

“THE ICE AND FIRE PROJECT”: CREATING A BUZZ ON SOCIAL MEDIA The principle is simple: one week, one label, two internationally recognised models to showcase the collections, create partnerships and channel the designer’s image to selected shops. Photos and videos - “snapshots of life” - tell the story of the link between the two women both in the workplace and beyond, with a hint of fantasy, dynamically striving for their goal; when Siberia embraces Africa, the culture clash is bursting with laughter, new ideas and professionalism, to capture

moments that are as genuine as they are natural! The aim is to put “fashion” ideas for mature women into “Insta-moments” and by doing so develop local businesses, shining a spotlight on the fabulous creations of designers from the region in Swiss clothes, shoe and accessories shops. MN Privilege, Le Laboratoire, Manidou Design, Concept Store Custo Barcelona, AREL, LYSE Boutique, Caprices de Femmes... the Ice and Fire Project has already made its mark on all these brands! Big names such as Thomas Wylde and Moschino quickly grasped the potential of this approach, putting some of the snapshots of the Ice and Fire Project on their Instagram accounts and prompting a surge of some 8,000 “likes” in less than 10 minutes! Warmth and confidence radiate in every shot, to show the brands in their best light and reveal the inspiration behind each collection. A moment of creativity and complicity, a glamorous, sparkling rendez-vous.

Leather goods

INSPIRED BY RAVENS’ WING

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

The raven is an inspiration, a living link between the visible and invisible world. Fascinated by this unusual creature, Aurore Ghiringhelli used it as a starting point to design her own line of leather goods. Let’s take a closer look. BY QUITTERIE PASQUESOONE

A

urore Ghiringhelli has a distinguished background as a graduate of the Grégoire Ferrandi school and she used to make the prototypes at Louis Vuitton’s design division. She has a real passion for the art of the beautiful and for elegant, modern fashion accessories and she launched her label, Aile de Corbeau (Raven’s Wing), in 2008. Traditionally, the raven is a symbolic link between humanity and the Universe. Its mission is to show how the beauty inherent in nature, the arts, in leather goods, fashion, music and architecture is firmly based on its underlying geometry and the order that lies behind design. This fascinating bird is sent as a messenger to reveal the concept of Sacred Geometry.

A UNIQUE WORLD The universe, as it was originally conceived, with all its shapes and all its colours, contributes to the artistic process of the designer. “I rely in particular on the genius of numbers,” she said. “My aim is to build harmonious designs loaded with high vibrations. I work with sacred geometry and its multiple facets, expressed in an infinite variety of forms, to design objects which are quite unique.” But that’s not all, Aurore Ghiringhelli is also inspired by elements from the

Earth such as crystals, shells or feathers. She also wants to honour ancient traditions, which have often been forgotten, especially the famous coded graphic symbols known as Celtic runes. This rich world is found in each of her designs.

INSPIRED PRODUCTS Whether handbags, belts, small leather goods, jewellery or shoes, Aurore Ghiringhelli’s designs for Aile de Corbeau have one thing in common: beauty. Each of them has come into being via perfectly mastered, traditional techniques which reflect the wonderful world of the brand. “The pieces are sewn and embellished by hand with a real desire to perpetuate a traditional savoir-faire based on a world full of dreams, refinement and innovation,” she said. She works with great precision with the highest-quality materials such as ostrich, stingray, alligator, lizard and python. The result is luxurious designs that reflect the universe and celebrate the link between the beauty of the world and mankind - designs like the Omicron Spirale d’Or clutch, laptop bags, including the Epsilon, and the turquoise Saturn bracelet, it is an entire realm on the edge of the physical world with a spirit that opens itself to lovers of high-quality leather goods.

TIME-KEEPERS

Blancpain

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

A TRADITION OF INNOVATION

Founded in 1735, Blancpain is the world’s oldest watch brand. Faithful to its heritage, the tradition of today’s Blancpain is its devotion to constant innovation. Its watchmakers are famed for their extraordinary movements. Through their dedication Blancpain has been a leader in its creation of ground breaking complications. All of its timepieces are produced in-house in its Vallee de Joux Swiss workshops. BY DEBORAH BENHAMMOU THE FIFTY FATHOMS, SEA DREAMS OF MARINE EXPLORATION From its birth in 1953, the legendary Fifty Fathoms lives in a world of exploring and preserving the ocean depths. Considered the first diver’s watch of modern times, it was born from an idea by the brand’s then CEO, Jean-Jacques Fiechter who adored diving and wanted a timekeeper specifically for underwater use. At the same time, he received a request from frogmen in the French navy who needed a reliable watch for their missions. The Fifty Fathoms quickly earned its own chapter in the history of watchmaking, and in the development of diver’s watches.

Worn by underwater pioneers such as Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the iconic Fifty Fathoms is now popular both with diving fanatics and lovers of exceptional watches. The details of the Fifty Fathoms combine the art of watchmaking with micro-mechanics. The general attributes of this historical collection include the calibre 1315, with a five-day power reserve, as well as a unidirectional rotating bezel, improving the safety of sports diving. In the 1950s, before the birth of computers, this instrument was a vital measuring tool for underwater expeditions. The new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe triple hand is available in a blue shade reminiscent of the ocean beds dear to Blancpain. Faithful to the original model, the luminescent

dots on the bezel are a marker for divers, enabling an alignment with the minute hand which also records the start time of the dive.

VILLERET QUANTIÈME À PHASE DE LUNE FEMININITY HAS A TALE TO TELL While moon phases had almost vanished from the scene of watchmaking, Blancpain reintroduced this horological complication in the early 1980s. Since then, it has become a signature of the Manufacture. The 6106 Quantième Phase de Lune model, unveiled at the last Baselworld, is in red gold with a bezel studded with 48 diamonds. The clean lines and clarity of its opaline dial single this watch out, as does

the importance accorded to the inclusion of timekeeping complications. The moonphase indication, depicted through a moon with a female face complete with beauty spot, reminds us of 18th century poetry. Looking through the sapphire case back, the owner can admire the red gold oscillating weight, decorated with a snailed bevel, polished chamfers and straight and circular Côtes de Genève patterns. The Manufacture shows, once again, its skill in the assembly of this timepiece, requiring delicate and meticulous procedures. The watch comes also in a steel version and reflects the aesthetic codes of the Villeret collection: the timeless grace and manufacturing know-how which Blancpain has been exercising since 1735.

Le Rhöne

WATCHMAKING, BY OTHER MEANS

A specialised brand of customisable timepieces, Le Rhöne was born from a love of beautiful watches. But it is more than that; founded by two friends passionate about watchmaking, it is also about a story of friendship. An overview of a designer brand like no other which makes perfection its personal mission. BY QUITTERIE PASQUESOONE

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

THE BIRTH OF A UNIQUE BRAND It was in 2013 that Loïc Florentin and Timo Rajakoski decided to create Le Rhöne. The two childhood friends, both passionate watchmakers who met at school in Venezuela, decided to combine their talents and create a brand dedicated to high quality watchmaking. A brand like no other was born. The “¨” is one of the brand’s distinctive characteristics. It can be found on the screws of each watch and is a symbol of the friendship, the life story and the adventure they have shared. The relentless demand for perfection and quality, with a touch of modernism and audacity; these are the characteristics of Le Rhöne watches.

QUALITY AND PERFECTIONISM Quality is the hallmark of Le Rhöne timepieces. The two partners work exclusively with the best Swiss craft workshops, which observe the finest traditions of watchmaking, while also respecting the original approach of Le Rhöne’s own watchmaking. The objective

of Loïc Florentin and Timo Rajakoski is to give their customers the best the watch industry has to offer. As they like to say. “We create watches for those who love the best of the old world, that of quality, authenticity, precision and who throw themselves with enthusiasm into tomorrow’s world, that of agility, speed, risk-taking and the unexpected.”

CUSTOMISATION Another special feature of the company is the possibility for each client to customise their watch. The brand invites the client to take part in the design of the timepiece they wish to wear. The choice of materials, finish: nothing is left to chance to make a watch that reflects their desire. The latest innovation; the Road Racer and Hedonia collections, but also those of Haute Horlogerie, are customisable. Unveiled last year, they are high-end models. With always the same ability to surprise, the company presented most notably a model with a double flying tourbillon home time. An absolute marvel.

WONDERFUL WATCHMAKING

Frank Jutzi, a designer of beautiful table clocks and wrist watches, crafts each of his pieces as if it were a jewel. BY QUITTERIE PASQUESOONE

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

T

he watches and clocks designed by Frank Jutzi are true works of art. They are decorated with semi-precious stones and made of high-quality materials (silver enamelled with gold, lapis lazuli, tourmaline, aquamarine, rhodochrosite, amethysts and pink quartz); his designs are truly captivating. Each one is unique and extremely accurate and thus can take up to six months to complete. Frank Jutzi’s skill as a jeweller is a result of the best possible training. After 10 years at the Rudolf Steiner School, he became an apprentice watchmaker in Bern. In the first year of his apprenticeship, guided by his teachers, he began to work on his first clock - a solar-lunar model with a skeletal movement. After a four-year apprenticeship, he opened his own workshop, specialising in the restoration of antique clocks where old models are modified and restored with the utmost attention to every detail.

Very creative and full of ideas, the pieces that Frank Jutzi designs today are extremely poetic and awe-inspiring. Sheer luxury. The watchmaker draws his inspiration from nature, birds, flowers, and plants. He is capable of working on two or three clocks at the same time, without his work and his creativity being adversely affected. Frank Jutzi is not only known for his original and highly technical designs, but also for his unique clocks which tell the time in unusual ways: so-called “mysterious” tourbillons, with several wheels turning around each other, giving his pieces an unusual technicality as an extra touch of poetry. Over time, he designs pieces he loves, builds them and then offers his work to his clients. Collectors and shops of all kinds are interested in his work in Basel, Abu Dhabi and London, etc. Fascinated by mechanisms, Frank Jutzi is not afraid to meet new challenges and is now working on new designs: clocks in the shape of the planets of our solar system. Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn - always with the famous tourbillons, a system of wheels and gears: to show the sky in a different way with more poetry and imagination than ever for truly spectacular designs.

just a number. Over time we develop a more personal relationship. You need to be good with people and know how to listen. But not everyone has those skills! What are the challenges facing you in the years to come? Moving forward with new technology. We must guide our customers through this digital revolution, while directing them towards specialised advice. My team is extremely skilled and knows how to multi-task. But despite all the technological advances, the advisor remains the main contact, because there will always be a need for a specialised adviser, a human being. What is the most unusual object you’ve been asked to insure? A Nepalese wheel!

EDUCATION

Thomas Schädler

Clinic Lemanic Magazine

A RACING CERTAINTY TO PUSH EDUCATION FORWARD

Thomas Schädler has a very clear vision of his role as Director General of Collège du Lé-man. He shows real passion for the job as he describes his philosophy and outlines his ob-jectives for pupils at the school. A charismatic and commanding presence, he is truly the heart and soul of Collège du Léman. THE MADE FOR YOU PROGRAMME IN POLE POSITION Mr. Schädler has a strong educational ethos and down-to-earth approach which ensures the principles underpinning Collège du Léman go above and beyond mere concepts of learning and transmission of knowledge. The Director General of Collège du Léman believes that pupils have the best chance of success and fulfilment when they are solving problems for themselves in a process of self-discovery. It is not about imposing one particular way of thinking, but rather allowing students to develop their own methods, according to their strengths and personality, while respecting their individuality. Through problem solving, pupils are challenged as individuals; it is a way of finding out about themselves and exceeding their own expectations. It is also a basis for learning social skills and how to communicate by putting into practice the values they have learned. Children discover

and build on their potential and grows in their own way - this is the essence of the school’s “Made for You” programme: to be oneself, through a truly high-class education; and to take those values into the real world! Because the truth is, you can give children all the tools, but if they are not the right ones or if they have not learned how to use them properly, they will not succeed when they leave school, either professionally or personally.

THOMAS SCHÄDLER, A POWERFUL MOTOR FOR THE COLLÈGE DU LÉMAN Collège du Léman provides a framework that sets out the principles of loyalty, respect, tolerance, knowledge, and those of education. It provides a strong foundation, not just “distributing better tools”, but teaching students how to use them according to their own personality, their affinities, their sensitivities and their potential. Certainly, Mr. Schädler’s love of Formula 1 may be not a coincidence!

The Michel Vaillant comics, the eponymous series about a French racing driver, that he borrowed secretly from his elder brother when he was a child, promoting important human values, definitely made a deep impression on Mr. Schädler. They allowed him to understand, from an early age, the power of the fundamental principles he holds so dear and which now resonate at Collège du Léman, and make him an exceptional leader. He is someone who has the will and the appetite to change the world with something unique: education. So here he is, our definition of a great man, a hero of modern times, able to build dreams for the future and make them happen for children.

Made for you

rom Roman Helvetia to this day, on the banks of Lake Neuchâtel and those of the lakes Morat and Geneva, the vineyards of the Vaud and the men and women who work in them have enjoyed a terrain and a climate perfect for creating a product both fine and gratifying with excellence and passion. Wine, as it is lived and drunk in this Swiss canton, constitutes a major element of our social, economic and cultural fabric.

But, thanks to its character and finesse, it is also a symbol of a sense of freedom and joie de vivre particular to the Vaud. Whether celebrating it in song during the Fête des Vignerons (Festival of Winegrowers) or enjoying a glass with friends, it creates this unique alchemy between labour, desire, pleasure and joy. Sublime and alive, it is the cornerstone of our regional identity – even a priceless element of Swiss patrimony.

Often marked by major political change, the year of the Dog can also present plenty of business opportunities, wealth and the chance to raise ones social status. DOG

TIGER

SNAKE

MONKEY

On the whole this should be a year of fresh beginnings. Feelings of anxiety and worries about the future, which have been dogging you, will dissipate. A year of goodwill and generosity.

This is a year for enterprise and making plans. Do not let feelings of anxiety prevent you from fulfilling your dreams. This has the makings of a good year for business.

2018 could be a year of uncertainty for the Snake. You continue to be plagued by feelings of unease and must try to overcome these. Don’t be lazy, especially if you want things to change.

Make sure you stay on top financially. Any money worries which you have been experiencing should resolve themselves. You are intelligent and resourceful and know how to wait for a favourable outcome.

RAT

CAT

HORSE

ROOSTER

Potentially an excellent year for the Rat. But pay attention to your business affairs, as you could end up neglecting these. In terms of matters of the heart, the signs are favourable.

For obvious reasons, the year of the Dog can make the Cat feel very uneasy. However, with your natural agility and nine lives, all should be well, as long as you take the necessary precautions.

Take a holiday and don’t forget to relax. You have a habit of letting work dominate your life. Try not to do this. Think about others, especially a partner.

This is not the year to be cocka-hoop. Your party lifestyle and rich living is slowly starting to catch up with you. Think about taking your foot off the accelerator for the time being.

BUFFALO

DRAGON

GOAT

PIG

This could be a tricky year for the Buffalo. But while everything may appear to be going wrong, all is not as bad as it seems. Stay positive and the tide is bound to turn.

Generally a very good year for the Dragon. Almost perfect. However do not throw caution to the wind and beware of making some people jealous of your good fortune.

You may feel neglected, but remember others may be having difficulties too, particularly when it comes to business. Don’t forget to give some love and attention to others, especially those that are close.

Financially things continue to go well. This should be a period of peace and prosperity for the pig. All is well with the world. Make the most of it.
