Let it snow

www.chrisblackledgephotography.co.uk

After a very busy year tying the knot to my wonderful partner, travelling to some beautiful places and celebrating several of our friends getting married, it’s finally time to close the door on 2022. It’s been quite a year, with a flurry of weddings from some beautiful couples across Surrey, lots of new companies opening their doors and some getting back to normal post-pandemic. Seeing things open up again has been wonderful and I can’t wait to see what 2023 brings!

If you’re a regular reader, then you’ll know that the December/January issue has always been my favourite, and I look forward to writing it every year. It’s packed full of inspiration, adorable products, seasonal weddings and the latest fashion trends. To celebrate the end of 2022, we’ve gone all out with wintry fashion pages, must-see venue styling and the latest flower trends. If you’re dreaming of tying the knot in a fairytale venue, then we’ve got you covered on page 27 or if you’re looking for something in Guildford or Woking head over to page 19.

Don’t forget if you’ve recently got married to submit your wedding at melissa.cullen@kdeventsandpublishing.com or via www.yoursurrey.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

Here at Your Surrey Wedding, we’re planning to celebrate Christmas with our friends and family and welcome in the new year in style. Whatever your plans are, we hope you have a lovely time and take a well-deserved break.

BRIDAL BLISS

Dress designer, Felicity Westmacott has moved to a new address. Relocating from Reigate High Street to the high street in Dorking, Felicity creates bespoke gowns for brides-to-be as well as dresses for bridesmaids, children and mother-of-the-brides and grooms.

Felicity tells us more: “Twenty years ago, I ran a shop with my dear mum for a year after I left school. We sold handmade clothes and jewellery. Now, after 20 years of working from home, building my skills, brand and reputation, I’m finally back on a high street. As well as prestige, the new space will give me room to expand my team, have a stock of samples to view and help more brides realise their wedding dress dreams.”

LOOKING YOUR BEST

Dapper & Suave in Dorking create fun and quirky accessories from pocket squares, bow ties and cravats to hair accessories and more. The owners, Rob and Jason, tell us more about their company and its new offerings: “We established our business in 2015, blogging about mixing vintage with high street fashion. Our best friend spotted a photo of us on social media and commented on how dapper and suave we looked, and so our brand name was born. We enjoy helping grooms-to-be find their style and have learned from talking to our customers that there is a scale of confidence from a small quirky accessory to full-on ‘peacocking’. Our only rule is that we don’t do plain designs as colour and pattern are what drive our brand. We have created everything from a bow tie for a newborn baby to peacock feather hair clips inspired by our lapel accessories.

“We have added gifting elements to our product range which are great for anyone in the bridal party – young or old! These include candles and skincare, and we are particularly proud of our Style Squad. These animal characters feature on cards, badges, and t-shirts as well as illustrated storybooks.”

WOTTON HOUSE, RH5 6HS

01306 730 000 | www.wottonhouse.co.uk

Wotton House dates back to the 16th century when it was sold by Henry Owen to the Evelyn family. John Evelyn was inspired by what he had discovered on his travels and constructed an Italian garden and temple, designed by his cousin, Captain George Evelyn, which was soon joined by a parterre garden complete with an Italian fountain. Since then, the estate has been passed through the Evelyn family, who have all been passionate about preserving John’s legacy, whilst adding their own touches to the estate.

There are 13 acres of gardens to explore, which have been deemed worthy of protection and individually Grade II listed. Flowing peacefully through the estate is The River Tillingbourne, which had its own mill at one time, and has since become awash with aquatic plants and wildlife, including a family of ducks who come and go as they please.

Inside the hotel are several luxurious bedrooms and junior

suites, a restaurant, leisure facilities and a range of wedding spaces.

Celebrate in style

The Grade II listed Italian gardens are fully licensed for civil ceremonies of up to 140 guests. The happy couple will say ‘I do’ underneath one of the two majestic temples, with panoramic views of the gardens.

The grand vaulted ceilings, pillars and centuries-old original marble fireplaces set a romantic tone for an indoor ceremony in The Old Library. This showstopping space is full of natural daylight shining through the Gothic windows and has Ancient Greek phrases written on the walls.

We love...

The dedicated wedding team at Wotton House will be on hand to help every step of the way to make sure the day is worry-free and full of lasting memories.

Coltsford Mill Wedding Venue is a classic country barn with an elegant finish that’s bathed in natural light and offers panoramic views over 12 acres of beautiful countryside. Boasting two lakes, romantic bridges and flowing cascades fed by the river Eden, the property retains many of its original features, including a mill wheel and water pump, along with many wonderful photo opportunities.

Celebrate in style

Nuptials of up to 95 guests take place in the Mill Room, which has original mill workings illuminated behind glass.

The drinks reception can take place on the terrace, which offers marvellous views over the grounds, cascades and ornamental gardens, with wicker tables, chairs, patio heaters and large, canvas umbrellas.

We wanted a venue that was relatively close to our home with beautiful grounds and Gate Street Barn was perfect! It had accommodation on-site, rooms to get ready in and a stunning backdrop. It was truly the perfect setting.

Our

Tandem Catering provided food during the day and we had pizzas from StoneRose Pizza Co in the evening. Hannah Martin Flowers was great and made sure that there were pops of colour in all of the floral decorations. tables were named after Soho Street signs, which added a personal touch as it’s where we first met. For our favours, we gave the ladies Jo Malone candles and the men different scents.

We were so happy and excited to have all our favourite people in one place. We were overwhelmed with love and had the most perfect day. My top tip to any couple is to make sure you enjoy every moment and don’t stress about the small things that are out of your control.

The bridesmaids wore pleated maxi gowns from Little Mistress. dress was called Marlowe by Enzoani from Surrey Brides. I wanted something in ivory that was romantic with a hint of glitz and glam. It was a full-length, A-line gown with 3D floral lace. I accessorised with a small hairpiece from Dareth Colburn Designs and a veil from Surrey Brides. Sam chose a three-piece dark green tweed suit from Abitto Ltd and a dark orange knitted tie from Moss Bros. Our entertainers were incredible. We hired a three-piece covers band called Three Mile Hill, Sylar the magician and DJ Jack The Lad.

The wedding fell on the same day as the June train strikes, so we were extra grateful that people made the effort to come. Some of our friends and family travelled from abroad, and having everyone go that extra mile was amazing.

Racquel and Jean-Pierre celebrated their Friends-themed wedding at Sacred Heart Wimbledon and Glenmore House Images courtesy of Stonelock Photography
42

Racquel and Jean-Pierre met in secondary school. “We were in the same class,” says Jean-Pierre. “We were just friends and stayed in contact when we went to different colleges. In 1999, we were out one day, and something felt different between us. It was an attraction that we hadn’t felt before. We started dating and became inseparable. Sadly, time passed and in 2004 we went our separate ways. Racquel went on to have two children, and when she became single in 2010, we met up to try and rekindle our friendship. Two years later, I had the realisation that I loved Racquel, so I asked her to meet me and told her how I felt. We started seeing each other again, and in 2013 we became pregnant with our son. We moved to Surrey to be nearer to my parents and have been incredibly happy ever since.”

Jean-Pierre proposed in April 2019 during a holiday to California. “We were vising my brother, and while we were there, I arranged a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon for the two of us,” shares the groom. “When we arrived, I asked one of the other tourists to take a picture of us, and while we were posing I got down on one knee and asked her to be my wife.”

SETTING THE SCENE

“Originally Racquel wanted to get married in Westminster Cathedral where she had been baptised and had her first holy communion and confirmation,” recalls Jean-Pierre. “However, logistically this was not suitable for where we wanted to have the reception. My mother said to have a look at Sacred Heart Wimbledon, which is not far from where she lives. We went to visit and were blown away by how beautiful it was. When looking for a reception venue, we found Glenmore House in Surbiton. We went to visit and immediately fell in love. It had an Elizabethan suite with a large portrait of the late queen, which is a style that Racquel loves as she is a big fan of Pride & Prejudice. What sealed the deal was how wonderful Faye, the deputy manager, was. We booked our date for September 2020, however, as with many weddings booked for 2020, this was postponed to September 2021 due to the pandemic. Then in 2021, we decided to postpone again until September 2022 as we were unsure if my brother and his family could come over from San Diego, and we did not want our guests to worry about being at a large gathering with masks being worn.”

Jean-Pierre created the order-of-service programmes and welcome board using floral images designed by ReiaColours. “I also designed the menus and reception programmes to be in keeping with our Friends theme,” explains Jean-Pierre. “Both programmes were ordered and printed by DigitalPrinting.co.uk.

“We decided to have a Friends theme because we watched the show when it first aired and are big fans,” adds the groom. “It seemed like the perfect theme as it’s a timeless series where not only people of our age know it, but even the younger people do, including Racquel’s daughter, who fell in love with the series during the first lockdown.”

For the ladies, Racquel made favours using Yankee Candle votives, which were decorated with a lobster sticker wrapped in cellophane and tied with a personalised ribbon. For the men, Jean-Pierre bought bottle openers in the style of an ace of spades and added heart-shaped stickers personalised with their surname and the date of their wedding.

“Our table plan tied in with our theme,” reveals Jean-Pierre. “This was sourced from a supplier on Etsy. Each table was named after a stage of our relationship in the style of a Friends’ episode or quote. During the wedding breakfast, this was replaced with the same table plan but with collage pictures instead.

“The centrepieces were tall silver candelabras decorated with flowers similar to the bouquets with a single sunflower in each,” continues the groom. “These were standing on mirror plates with tea lights around them. Each table had a Friends-style yellow photo frame with a collage of pictures featuring all of the guests on that table with us.”

The happy couple sourced their cake two weeks before the wedding. “Due to certain circumstances, we needed to find a supplier and Holly Dolly Cakes was able to make an amazing cake from Racquel’s description in a single video call,” remembers Jean-Pierre. “It was three tiers and the flavours were chosen by everyone in our household. Our custom topper was ordered online and was

made from a picture of our faces combined with a picture of our wedding outfits. The cake table also had a small photo frame with details about each layer of the cake and why we chose those flavours. Holly Dolly Cakes saved our wedding cake and was very reassuring. We didn’t see what the final product would look like until we arrived at the reception, but the design that Holly came up with blew us away.”

For their transport, Racquel and Jean-Pierre hired a bus from RedRoutemaster.com for their guests, and the newlyweds travelled in a luxury car provided by Knights Wedding Cars.

“Glenmore House provided all of the catering, including canapés for our guests on arrival,” says Jean-Pierre. “We had a three-course meal with a salmon and crab fishcakes starter, roasted duck breast with duck fat roast potatoes and braised cabbage for the main and Chantilly cream filled profiteroles with warm chocolate sauce for dessert. There was also a vegan option and meal for the children. For the evening, a chef’s selection buffet was provided.”

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

Racquel chose an ivory Oleg Cassini mermaid dress from David’s Bridal. “She loved the off-the-shoulder look and beaded decorations,” explains the groom. “She accessorised with a sash belt, necklace, bracelet and earrings. I wore a custom-made tuxedo with black peak lapels, gold leaf lining and personalised stitching from Moss Bros. The groomsmen wore bright blue suits from Dobell with matching waistcoats and dusky pink ties from Burtons, which matched the bridesmaids’ dresses.”

The bridesmaids opted for pink maxi dresses from Dorothy Perkins, and Racquel’s maid-of-honour chose a lilac maxi dress from Little Mistress.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

“We hired two live performers that are West End professional singers called Tailored Tenors,” shares Jean-Pierre. “Before they started their first set, they did an act where one of them pretended to be a waiter that dropped a load of cutlery, causing a scene and then the other walked in pretending to be the manager, and they had an argument before breaking out into their first song. They were incredible and were a massive hit with all the guests. They sang songs that people of all ages knew and interacted with everyone allowing them to sing with them. One of the groomsmen thought it was recorded music until he saw them singing live.

“When the main room opened up again after the turn around, we had three dancers called Tropical Flowers Sega Dancers perform to add some culture to the day,” adds Jean-Pierre. “Sega is a style of music from Mauritius, which is where my father is from. They did two dances, and the third got some of our guests involved. My father even got up and danced and was in his element.”

Racquel and Jean-Pierre hired a photo booth from Booth Nineteen. “The attendant was very friendly and set up the Friends-themed backdrop that we provided,” recalls Jean-Pierre. “We received digital copies of all the pictures, which I made a video from for everyone to see. Later in the evening, we had Signature Sounds Ltd as our DJ. They performed our first dance song whilst they played a montage of pictures that I had put together. For the father and daughter dance, they played a video I had prepared featuring a montage of pictures of Racquel’s mother. As Racquel’s dad was not able to get up and dance with her, Racquel’s eldest son stepped in and danced with her whilst they held a picture frame of her mother.”

REAL WEDDINGS 45

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

“We were both exhilarated, excited and overwhelmed on the day,” reveals the groom. “We weren’t nervous as there was no doubt that we were meant to be together after all that we had been through. We were completely stress free and were on a high from beginning to end. What helped was that although we did not have a wedding planner, we had a very good friend, ironically her name is Monica, that is experienced in event planning that offered to help make the day run smoothly, which took away all of the stress.

“My favourite moment was turning around at the alter to see Racquel in her wedding dress,” continues Jean-Pierre. “Racquel had bought her dress three years ago, and it had been in our house for over two years, so finally seeing her in that dress and how perfect her hair and make-up looked was wonderful. We loved walking into the reception area after taking photos in the park across the road from Glenmore House, and seeing everyone talking to each other, having drinks and having fun with the Tailored Tenors. The last song of the night was The Time of My Life from Racquel’s favourite movie, Dirty Dancing. We danced together in the middle of the room whilst several guests danced in a circle around us. When the second verse started we got the surrounding guests to join us in the middle where we all huddled together, danced together and sang together. This was the perfect way to end the night, celebrating with our friends and family.

“What made the day feel extra special for us was the real appreciation our friends and family had for all the effort we had put into the theme and decoration,” continues the groom. “We had numerous guests point out all of the things they loved, from the collage photos on the tables to the photo booth and how all of it fit together without being too cheesy or over-the-top.

“Our photographer, Stonelock Photography, was incredible,” explains Jean-Pierre. “Ally and AJ are husband and wife, and they made us feel so at ease, we had complete trust in them and did everything that they asked knowing we were in good hands. They were so accommodating, and as you can tell from the pictures, they are so good at what they do. We would highly recommend them to anyone as they are the loveliest couple!”

ENCHANTED

romance

Amanda and Mark tied the knot at Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa with an enchanting forest theme Images courtesy of BC DigiPhot Ltd

Amanda and Mark started talking online. “To this day, we still don’t know who swiped first,” laughs Amanda. “Our relationship blossomed, and Mark asked me to be his wife in 2018 while we were in Egypt on an island called Mahmya. I had no idea that he was going to propose, and the whole trip was paradise.”

Here she shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

REAL WEDDINGS 49

Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa had everything we needed and wanted in a wedding venue. Lily Sharp, our wedding coordinator, who we met on our first visit really sold it to us, and we fell in love with her straight away. The property had fantastic scenery, the venue room was beautiful, and we loved the outdoor space that connected to the room.

We covered the tables in jewels and decorated the venue with chairs and table runners that were colour-coordinated with the bridesmaids’ dresses.

For our favours, we gave our guests key-shaped bottle openers, tequila, bubbles and personalised sweets.

We chose manzanita trees for our centrepieces with hanging baubles.

We chose logs for our place names that tied in with our woodland theme.

Mark and I chose a four-tiered square cake from We Bake Your Memories.
50

I hired my dress from W Wedding London. It was an ivory nude colour, off-the-shoulder ballgown with flowers and vines all over the base of the dress. I accessorised with a tiara, a veil, earrings and a necklace. I had a Jerusalem cross pinned inside the dress, which was blessed in Israel by my priest, and Mark surprised me with a memorial charm of my dad, which we attached to my bouquet.

Mark wore grey tweed tails with a double-breasted waistcoat, a white shirt, a liberty print tie with a matching handkerchief and oxblood shoes. The groomsmen opted for pink ties that matched the bridesmaids’ dresses and pocket watches.

The bridesmaids chose long chiffon dresses in a mixture of pink and purple with straps that could be worn in different ways. They accessorised with thin diamanté belts, nude shoes and matching jewellery.

We had a DJ supplied by Lythe Hill Hotel & Spa and a photo booth and roulette table from All Night Long Events. We also wowed our guests with magician, Paul Newman, singing waiters from Sing Out Waitresses & Waiter and silent fireworks provided by Sussex Wedding Fireworks.

Our wedding was four years in the making due to COVID-19, so we felt emotional, stressed and excited on the day.

My bridesmaid, son and the best man gave wonderful speeches that were stand out moments.

Floral fantasy

Flowers for every season

We love flowers here at Your Surrey Wedding, but with so many gorgeous blooms to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming. To help you create the perfect arrangement, we’ve asked local suppliers to send in their favourite seasonal options.

www.guycollierphotography.com and www.hannahmartin.net

“Crisp whites and creams work well during the winter months alongside dried elements such as seed pods, grasses or dried flowers. It’s also a great time to incorporate some of the early spring options, such as anemones or ranunculus, which are starting to show their faces, as these are a soft and pretty contrast to the more wintry blooms available.” – Hannah Martin from Hannah Martin Flowers.

“Winter conjures up images of frosty bouquets full of anemones and paperwhites. Spruce and pine with cones works well too, as does the lovely structural elegance of the calla lily. All you need to make things perfect is a sprinkle of snow!” – Paula Reeks from Floral Alchemy.

“It’s true that fewer florals may bloom in the winter months, but that doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on your wedding flowers. Most good florists will work with the time of year, and using seasonal options are better value for money and are a more sustainable choice.” – Maxine Cole from Chair Cover Dreams.

Winter luxe FLOWERS 55

www.chaircoverdreams.co.uk

“Spring bouquets are all about scent, as this is when flowers, such as paperwhites, hyacinths and muscari come into season. The colours also become lighter and more feminine compared to the blooms from the previous months, so start to think about pastels hues, such as blush, powder blue, buttermilk and lilac.” –Hannah from Hannah Martin Flowers.

Spring Summer

“We love seeing couples celebrate the changing of the seasons with their wedding flower choice, and spring is one of our favourites. Seasonal flowers include hyacinths, sweet peas, Lily of the valley and freesias. Not forgetting favourites like tulips, daffodils, and forget-me-nots which all add fantastic texture to bouquets and centrepieces.” – Maxine from Chair Cover Dreams.

“Early summer sees the blowsy flowers such as peonies and garden roses at their best, so wedding bouquets are full of ruffles and frills. An abundance of delicately-scented herbs also become available. You could introduce rosemary, mint and flowering basil for an additional scented element.”

– Hannah from Hannah Martin Flowers.

www.hannahmartin.net

“Seasonal flowers are a joy! Scent is key in spring, with narcissi, hyacinth and blossom all at their best. Tulips are in abundance, with colours and shapes to complement every floral design.” –Paula from Floral Alchemy.

www.floralalchemy.co.uk

“Sweet peas, peonies and roses are the go-to flowers for fragrance and style this season. David Austin Roses are renowned for their perfume and cottage garden look, but make sure you have a healthy budget if these are on your wish list!” – Paula from Floral Alchemy.

www.chaircoverdreams.co.uk

“Many wedding flowers are available all year round, including favourites such as roses, carnations and orchids. However, many other floral favourites have a limited season, among them are some of the most beautiful summer options. From dainty little blooms such as sweet peas to primadonnas such as peonies and dahlias.” – Maxine from Chair Cover Dreams.

Autumn

www.floralalchemy.co.uk

“This season has to be my absolute favourite. The variety of petal formations and colours of the dahlias and chrysanthemums means there’s something for everyone. Amaranthus gives a lovely trailing movement to bouquets and arrangements, and sunflowers bring a smile to everyone’s faces.” – Paula from Floral Alchemy.

www.chaircoverdreams.co.uk

“If you’re planning an autumn wedding, we encourage you to embrace seasonal blooms, foliage and berries. The colours become more vibrant and warmer, giving us an awe-inspiring colour palette to choose from that’s lush, rich and diverse. While it’s now possible to buy almost any variety of flowers at any time of the year, most florists will work with the seasons.”

With love from Italy

On a spring afternoon, an assemblage of highly-talented wedding professionals collaborated together to bring this Italian Riviera-themed shoot to life in no other than the Surrey Hills. Barnett Hill is a mesmerising four-star hotel located in Guildford. The surroundings of the century-old manor are enriched with rural charm and a winding tree-lined entrance. Its contemporary design made the fitting canvas for the theme, which allowed the work of over 20 contributors to truly shine in all their glory. The team effort resulted in a romantic and authentic wedding showcase which beautifully captured the charm of a destination-inspired wedding celebration and the service led by Helen Noble Celebrant of Surrey fit the feel of the shoot perfectly.

Wedding planner and shoot coordinator, Celebrating Love by Lucia Penma, tells us: “As creatives and suppliers of the wedding industry, we wholeheartedly believe that a wedding can be so much more than the traditional viewpoint. With the injection of colour and originality, an elegant and stylish event is highly achievable. With a touch of creative flair, you can cultivate an unforgettable wedding, which speaks volumes in years to come. We encourage you to go against the grain and challenge the conventional wedding day by embracing cultural characteristics and stylistic differences. You might just surprise yourself with the outcome!”

LOVE THROUGH A LENS

HOT TOPIC: WEDDING WORRIES

For my personal approach to photography, which is quite documentary, I tend to work alone and blend in with the guests. However, having two photographers really does depend on the number of guests and location. For a small intimate wedding with everything in one location, two photographers can be overwhelming, but they can be beneficial for larger weddings or those that take place across multiple locations.

Having two photographers means one can be with the bride and one with the groom for the morning preparations. During the ceremony, you will have coverage from two angles, usually one from the back of the ceremony room and one at the front. This can give a great view of both the bride and groom’s reaction when they first see each other at the aisle. It’s also great for the ring exchange and first kiss.

During the reception one photographer can focus on the family and group pictures, whilst the other can take relaxed guest photos. Similarly, during the speeches, the room can be split between the two photographers to try to capture all of the guests’ reactions.

Have a chat with your photographer, and they will be able to help guide you on what would work best for your big day.

PLANNED TO PERFECTION

What does a toastmaster do and is it worth hiring one?

www.paigemary.co.uk

LOVE IS ALL AROUND

We’re thinking of hiring a celebrant for our upcoming wedding. What should we take into consideration before booking?

Treat your search for a celebrant like you would for your make-up artist or florist. Celebrants come from all sorts of different backgrounds, and it’s their energy and style that are important. Once you like them and connect with them, the next step is checking the evidence. Do they have testimonials or blogs? Have they been in any media or publications? Do they have a YouTube channel? If research isn’t really your bag, then dive straight in and give them a call. This is the best way to decide whether you should book them or not. Like a lot of wedding suppliers, we are creative people, and we are fuelled and driven by the clients we serve, so it’s important you feel a connection before booking.

Helen Noble www.helen-noble.co.uk

This is a great question and one that I often get asked. Look for a toastmaster that has been professionally trained would be my first piece of advice. You will get assurance that they will provide a sense of tradition and formality with a modern approach setting the tone for the day that you want. A trained toastmaster will provide you with a service that covers the initial planning, through to the ceremony and evening celebrations. They will have been trained to work across a whole spectrum of events, understanding the associated cultural or religious differences, and provide a professional service for your day, ensuring that your event runs smoothly and as you wish.

They should liaise with you and your events team throughout all stages of the planning process and advise on etiquette, the running order and timings and guide you through all of the options available. For example, on the day, I liaise with the banqueting team, the photographers and any entertainers to knit your event together and ensure it runs on time.

A friend of ours had two photographers on their wedding day. What are the benefits of this, and should we do the same?
EXPERT ADVICE 67

A PERFECT DAY

Our friends suggested we hire a celebrant to officiate our wedding, but we’re not sure what to expect. What does a celebrant do?

Having a celebrant officiate your wedding is a great way of creating a personal and bespoke ceremony. It provides you with the freedom to choreograph something meaningful and individual to you, as well as being engaging for your guests as they won’t have seen a ceremony like yours, even if they have been to other celebrant-led weddings.

When looking for a celebrant it’s important to find one that shares your values, vision and possibly even your style. If you like modern and romantic, it would be pointless going for a quirky celebrant and vice versa.

Most suppliers should offer a free chat so you can see if your ideas flow and you like how they work. I like to work closely with my couples, meet them a few times and get to know them. I find the information I need by chatting with them, but some celebrants may send out questionnaires.

Find out if your celebrant is able to conduct a ritual for you, if this is something you want, as some do and some don’t. They should have lots of ideas on how to help you create something that you and your partner will look back on for years to come and cherish.

ESPECIALLY FOR YOU

We’ve just got engaged and are planning to get married in 2024. When should we start looking for a photographer?

If you’ve booked your wedding venue, then it’s never too early to start booking suppliers, especially your photographer. Be aware that the time of year that you’re getting married will depend on the demand for your chosen supplier. May through to September will always be busiest, with lots of clients booking a year to 18 months in advance.

As always, make sure you choose wisely. Get a good feel from your photographer and make sure their style suits you. When you do come to book, a holding fee or a deposit is all that is generally required to secure your date.

WE ARE FAMILY

We have lots of children attending our wedding and are thinking of hiring childcare for them. What should we take into consideration before booking a company?

Booking an event-childcare company is the perfect way to include little ones in your day, while also allowing the parents to relax and enjoy themselves. Think about the kind of package you require, as you may like to book an entire creche with a play set-up with multiple nannies if you have a larger group of children attending, or just the one nanny, if you only have one or two children requiring care.

You’ll need to know the times you’d like childcare to begin and end on the day. Think about whether an extra pair of hands might be useful during preparations in the morning and if an evening service could help allow parents to party the night away.

Another important consideration is space. Your childcare providers will require a separate room at your venue to care for the children; the size of which will depend on the package you book and the number of little ones needing care. Block out a space early on, so the childcare company and venue can plan around this.

Event-childcare companies will offer various packages to support you and your little guests in the best possible way during your wedding day, ensuring little ones are safe and happy at all times.

ME PRETTY Style

The latest styling trends

If you’ve booked your venue, then the next thing you’ll be thinking about is how to style it. With so many options available, this can seem like a daunting task, but the most important thing to remember is that any space can be transformed with even the simplest of details. To help give you some inspiration, we’ve asked local suppliers for their top tips on how to create three on-trend looks.

“Any event, no matter how large or small the space is, has countless opportunities to personalise it in your own way. Guests will talk about those special touches that they saw throughout the day or comment on the wow factor as they entered the room. We all think of decorating the tables but consider other opportunities. Where will photos be taken, what spaces will your guests use, and are there any dull corners that could be made more interesting? – Claire Stevenson from Wedding Day Hire.

“Add additional light in the form of small, delicately-lit glass decorations. The overall effect is that of height and light. Complement this with standing silver vases framing the top table and a coordinating floral arrangement. Cake stands can also be interesting. Look for a floating tiered cake stand or crystals to tie in with the celestial theme.” –Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

“With celestial wedding décor you can choose to be as lavish or as subtle as you wish. Gold decorations, shiny crystals with sparkling table settings, and lighting mixed with shades of blue will create a mystic atmosphere for everyone to indulge.” –Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

“Conjuring up a ‘not of this world’ theme brings opportunities to dress the venue and tables with pieces that your guests will marvel at as they enter the room. For tables, perhaps go for a tall slim glass vase filled with light and crystals, with either a striking flower ball or whimsical trailing floral arrangement.” – Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

“A celestial-themed wedding is proving to be a popular choice for 2023. Opt for brilliant white to represent the clouds and dark blue shades with gold star accents to create ‘written in the stars’ moments. Constellation imitations on menus or seating charts and moon design elements on a backdrop or the cake will create the perfect atmosphere.” – Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

Bridgerton

“This theme screams opulence and richness. Spaces adorned with grand floral displays, and charger plates will add instant colour and impact. Grand candelabra centrepieces create drama as guests enter the room and can be further embellished with garlands and flowers. Remember to ask about LED candles if your venue does not allow open flames.”

– Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

“Choose a venue with crystal chandeliers, high ceilings and stunning portraits to recreate the look. Most will come with beautiful gardens that will make a great background for your photos. Trying to recreate the design of the popular series set will help you to make easy decisions when it comes to planning and decorating, which can save you valuable time.” – Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

“Introduce various textures in your wedding décor, such as pearls, vintage-footed bowls, and wax-sealed place names. If your venue allows it, candles and lanterns are a great way to create a sense of nostalgia as well as being dainty.” – Tutu from Prime Violet Events.

“Invest in a stately venue such as a manor house with historic furnishing and a sizeable outdoor area to set the tone. Elevate your place setting with ornate tableware for a classy ambience. Go big with your floral arrangements, and don’t shy away from adding floral touches in different parts of the venue.” – Tutu Emmanuel from Prime Violet Events.

“This theme is all about lush floral arches, Georgian-style windows and handwritten invitations filled with elegance and grace. By incorporating Regency blue mixed with pastel flower shades, it can create a classic and sophisticated look. As in the Bridgerton series, most important events are filled with large floral arrangements, exquisite backdrops and hanging wisteria flowers, so you will have to pay great attention to planning and investing in the right flowers to match the look.” – Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

www.weddingdayhire.co.uk

“Touches such as gold antique table number holders will add character to your table settings. To frame a doorway or top table, substantial plinths and matching urns quickly and easily create a fantastic feel. A florist will be able to make these a stand-out feature. For additional drama, place floor-standing floral arrangements around the venue. These will creating a beautiful fragrance throughout your day.” – Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

“When planning a Bridgerton-themed wedding, it’s important to infuse elements of elegance, enchantment, and opulence throughout in order to bring the theme to life. From soft pastel colours and stunning architecture to gorgeous blooms and fine calligraphy, Bridgerton is all about creating an allure of romance with statement pieces that create a luxurious feel. The key to creating the ultimate Bridgerton-theme is to ensure various aspects of the day are cohesive and in line with the overall wedding motif.” – Tutu from Prime Violet Events.

Rustic

“Delicate flowers that do not necessarily need to match and a cluster of artefacts will create a rustic look. You are not tied to traditional vases either, why not have some fun with vintage crockery filled with flowers, an array of single-stem vases or an eclectic mix of tealight holders? To add a hint of grandeur, short antique candelabra work well with this style.” – Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

“A rustic theme is wonderful as it can be truly natural, with thoughts of wood, meadow flowers and shabby chic, through to eclectic and antique. It can be tailored to work with any style of venue from a barn reception to a classic country house setting.” – Claire from Wedding Day Hire.

www.weddingsbynicolaandglen.com and www.weddingdayhire.co.uk

“Avoid bright decorations, fabric curtains, flowers in luxurious vases and brilliant white table covers. Instead you should dominate with wooden décor, linen fabrics and field flowers that create light arrangements. Use jars, buckets, or bottles to replace the vases or stands. From invitations to the table centrepieces, it’s important to create simplicity and remember less is more.”

– Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

www.weddingdayhire.co.uk

“The rustic theme has been dominating the wedding industry for a while, but every year it renews itself and brings something new. When planning a rustic wedding, remember dominating colours are soft and warm. Cream, sand and brown would be ideal. Use a natural palette for contrasting colours, such as green trees, sun-kissed fields and colourful flowers.”

– Inga and Shahnaz from The Surrey Events.

SKIN FOOD

Discover how to achieve that much-desired bridal glow the natural way, through a healthy diet of skin-loving foods

Flawless, blemish-free skin is high on the priority list for many brides wanting to look and feel their big-day best. There’s a world of popular skincare advice out there from variations on the daily three-step routine to alternative products, but the impact that food has on our long-term skin health is often overlooked.

Healthy skin is a sign of a healthy body so it’s worth knowing what foods can help protect, nourish and encourage a gorgeous complexion. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness to find out more. Here, they share their skin-loving food suggestions to help you glow from the inside out.

BERRIES

Berries such as blackberries, blueberries, acia and strawberries are some of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. A rich source of antioxidants and vitamins, consuming a handful of these little treasures regularly can help reduce oxidative damage that may contribute to signs of ageing. Mix up the colour and types you eat to get a variety of phytonutrients.

OLIVE OIL

Fats are often associated with high cholesterol and weight gain, however certain fats are essential for good health, namely Omega 3 and 6 found in olive oil. With its anti-inflammatory properties it can help to calm damage in the body, boost brain health, contribute to effective hormone production and maintain healthy cell function, while supporting the skin’s natural barrier, leaving it looking dewy and nourished.

NUTS AND SEEDS

Vitamin E is widely used in skincare products due to its powerful antioxidant capabilities. It does this by safely trapping free radicals that otherwise cause damage within the body. By acting as a mediator between harmful substances and our natural defence systems, it can help calm irritation and redness, prevent blemishes and protect against environmental damage. The oils naturally found in sunflower seeds along with other nuts and seeds such as almonds and pumpkin seeds, are a great source of vitamin E for the skin.

CARROTS

The chemical compound or phytonutrient that gives carrots their vibrant colour is known as carotene, a powerful antioxidant. This is a natural form of vitamin A that supports the growth and quality of new cells, contributing to healthy skin cell renewal and helping to achieve that post-facial glow. When eaten with a healthy fat such as butter or olive oil, carrots will help the body to absorb vitamin A more efficiently.

TURMERIC

One of the best-known superfoods, turmeric is a powerhouse of medicinal properties beyond skin care. It’s a great spice to include in meals or hot drinks in the winter to fight against infection.

Interestingly, it’s a traditional custom for an Indian bride to have a paste made with turmeric applied to her skin, helping to promote a calm, natural glow for the main event. Turmeric is also a great natural remedy sometimes used topically to treat skin blemishes and acne.

ROCKET

Rough, dry, congested skin may be a sign of toxin build up. Cruciferous vegetables such as rocket, aid the liver to detoxify the body and help eliminate the build up of toxins that can present as outbreaks on the skin. Dark greens such as rocket also contain chlorophyll, which is also one of the best-known antioxidants found in food, further protecting the skin from breakouts and damage.

CUCUMBER

Foods that are high in water such as cucumber, are a great way to keep the body hydrated. Water helps the body to naturally flush away toxins that can result in breakouts if left harbouring. Water also aids the gut in functioning normally and prevents constipation, which if left unmanaged, has direct implications with the skin. Other foods that are high in water and will help you to help stay hydrated include watermelon, grapefruit, grapes and celery. What’s more, these foods also contain fibre that further support gut health, and vitamin C to help brighten and protect the skin further.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

What trends will be popular for grooms in 2023?

Grooms often wear a traditional morning suit, tail suit or a classic lounge suit, but this is starting to change with a shift towards black tie and the desire to express individual style.

Personalisation, patterns, and colours are key trends for 2023. Grooms are starting to take more ownership for what they want to wear on their special day, from bold suit choices to personalised accessories which can be worn again after the big day.

Once you’ve agreed on your colour scheme as a couple, start to research smaller businesses and talk to them about creating bespoke items. For example, we recently worked with a groom who chose a circuit board design in the colours of the bridal party for his special day to reflect his day job as a software engineer.

Expressing personal style is key for grooms in 2023, and we see three broad groups emerging. ‘The Print Lover’ is exactly that, often choosing designs such as florals, abstracts and prints with personal meaning. ‘The Unconventional Groom’ is looking for something bespoke to them and is prepared to mix and clash pattern with style. Finally, we see ‘The Peacock a.k.a. The Dandy’, who will wear a cravat, pocket square, lapel flower teamed with a great suit and excellent shoes. Whatever you choose to wear, make sure you feel comfortable and stylish.

TREND SETTER

What hair and make-up styles will be popular in 2023?

In 2023, hair will be less structured and more relaxed, with less focus on the hair itself and more on showing off the dress.

The half-up and half-down look with waves will continue to be popular.

Brides-to-be will start opting for a middle parting with smooth, straight hair teamed with a dramatic hair piece or crown.

www.indigoimages.co.uk

A low bun is still going to be on-trend as is a high ponytail with lots of volume and waves paired with natural make-up.

When it comes to your make-up, my top tip is to drag your blush down to the apple of your cheek and sweep it across to your nose and repeat it on the other side. It will create a more youthful and sweeter feel to your make-up. Light and fluffy eyelashes are also a must-have.

BEAUTY QUEEN

Don’t go against your skin’s natural undertones. If you have a warm complexion, go with a shade that has yellow undertones, and if your complexion is on the cool side, a foundation with pink undertones is your best bet. Neutral undertones can sway either way, depending on the time of year and temperatures. Try to find a foundation focusing on your specific skin concerns, whether it’s an issue like acne, eczema or simply wanting your skin to look more luminous and glowy. Foundation isn’t a one-sizefits-all, so take your time to visit a department store and make sure you get samples to try in your own home. Most importantly, never buy blind online!

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
The Standard

Greece is

Santorini is often referred to as the supermodel of the Greek islands and I can see why. Surrounded by the inviting Aegean Sea, it’s reached by direct flights from the UK or a short 45-minute flight from Athens Airport. It can also be accessed by boat from Piraeus Port for island-hopping honeymooners wanting to escape to the sun. On arrival, Europe’s most glamorous getaway greets visitors with unbeatable views and the famous white-washed landscape dotted with the instantly recognisable blue domes on the many chapels and churches that are perched on the steep Caldera cliffs.

VILLA WITH A VIEW

Hidden down an accessible track off the main road linking the Insta-worthy town of Oia to the capital, Fira, sits Villa Mellow, one of more than 500 luxury vacation rental villas located in a choice of more than 25 dreamy destinations offered by The Greek Villas. Promising privacy, it’s perfect for honeymooners wanting to get away from it all. The authentic architectural design is built in the island’s signature style with sunny bursts of yellow cheerfully decorating the exterior. The fully furnished interior enjoys a pop-art vibe created through playful splashes of colour in the living room, on the mezzanine level (which provides a great snug area) and in the kitchen. It sleeps up to six people in three spacious bedrooms with the master one (which was my weekend hideout) commanding unrivalled sea views and doors leading to the patio. It’s the perfect place if you want to enjoy a family-moon or holiday with friends.

I couldn’t wait to take a dip in the heated infinity swimming pool and outdoor hot tub, both perched on the cliff edge, and laze on the comfortable sun loungers perfectly placed to admire the view stretching across to the town of Imerovigli. There’s even a spectacular wedding arch above the

patio for couples wishing to marry in Greece and enjoy their honeymoon at the villa (civil ceremonies can take place here with up to 70 guests seated around it and music and dancing can be enjoyed into the early hours).

WISH YOU WERE HERE

Eager to explore, I headed straight to the tourist hotspot of Oia to witness one of the world-renowned sunsets I had heard so much about. To grab a great spot at the ruins of the castle of Agios Nikolaos or beside the Glitzy Windmill, be prepared to set off early. Don’t forget the essentials - a glass of Ouzo (a Greek aperitif) or a local beer!

The winding narrow marble streets in Oia are home to high-end restaurants, traditional tavernas and designer boutiques and the best time to visit is in May or October when it isn’t too crowded. Visitors wanting to hike from here to Fira can follow the 6.5-mile path (stopping for a picnic or lunch at the Avocado restaurant for some tasty Mediterranean cuisine) while those looking for a more laid-back vacation (yes, that’s me!) can hire a car or a quad (or even book a one-hour donkey ride) to see this volcanic island.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

I was very impressed by the private 24-hour, hotel-standard service at the villa meaning that I didn’t need to lift a finger. My host was Michael who prepared a fresh Greek breakfast every morning that I enjoyed outside on the patio (dinner cooked on-site in the outdoor oven was also an option).

Those

Gino and Fred Go Greek is another option but getting there isn’t for the faint-hearted with the main access being down more than 270 steps. It’s well worth it though to dine on the crystal-clear water’s edge surrounded by traditional fishing boats. A highlight for me was the cuttlefish, homemade tzatziki and saganaki.

Party-lovers should head to Fira while those wanting another spectacular sunset from a different angle across Fira and Oia should book a table at the recently opened wine bar and restaurant Madame Sousou located in Pyrgos where they make their own wine (and gin) and serve tasty small tapas plates chosen around the wine varieties. The wine cellar itself is impressive, built into a cave. Also in Pyrgos is the vintage-inspired Agaze bistro and deli offering traditional greek flavours in a cosy atmosphere.

From the moment I arrived in Athens, a three-and-a-half hour flight from London, the energy of this bustling city greeted me. A myriad of vibrant streets crammed with landmarks promised to fill my Insta feed, from the iconic Acropolis of Athens (a UNESCO World Heritage Centre) to the Plaka district, the oldest in Athens that lies beneath the Acropolis where the cobbled streets are filled with eclectic shops and rooftop restaurants. Being a shopper, I loved the boutiques in the fashion district and the markets (especially the flea market, where a romantic mix of old meets new). May is a great time to visit when the weather is warm (the average temperature is 25 degrees) but the intense heat of the summer hasn’t yet descended.

PERFECT PAMPER

After a busy day spent sightseeing, I was booked into the SPA Suite, an oasis of calm in the middle of this bustling mecca offering an extensive treatment menu. With a focus on wellness, I felt rejuvenated after a relaxing full-body massage using Elemis products followed by a steam bath. There’s also a 24-hour Gym Suite, where guests can enjoy pilates and rooftop yoga is also offered.

A WARM WELCOME

Nestled in the heart of this capital city opposite Old Parliament House sits the five-star hotel xenodocheio Milos. I was excited to visit this boutique property, a food destination which is the first luxury gastronomy hotel of the world-renowned Greek restaurant Estiatorio Milos. It boasts 43 stylish rooms and suites including the 501 Milos Terrace Suite which was my home-from-home for the night. The highlight of this wonderful space is the private rooftop terrace complete with a jacuzzi and far-flung views, the ideal spot to soak up summer in the city.

DINE IN STYLE

The Estiatorio Milos restaurant situated on the ground floor of this popular hotel is well-known on the Athens dining scene for its fantastic Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant offers private dining events, an all-day al fresco sidewalk cafe bar located just outside on the terrace and there’s

soon to be an oyster bar. It has sister properties in New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Cabos, Montreal and London where the extensive seafood menu tantalises tastebuds with delicious dishes made using only the freshest and finest ingredients from the Greek islands. Founder and chef Costas Spiliadis has personally chosen the fishermen and farmers to work with. A highlight for me was the sashimi and ceviche followed by the lightly fried zucchini and eggplant before the grilled fish of the day was served. For dessert, I tucked into a mouth-watering bitter chocolate tartrate served with homemade cream washed down with a glass of delicious Cretan Vorinos wine.

THE LAKES In love with

A myriad of delights lie in wait in The Lake District for UK honeymooners

The four-star Belsfield Hotel, located mere moments from the charming town centre in Bowness-on-Windermere, exudes class, sophistication and historical splendour. From its enviable spot on the banks of Lake Windermere, there can surely be nowhere better to enjoy the rest, relaxation and beauty of the area cocooned in sheer luxury. Whether you’re looking for an active honeymoon break filled with hiking and outdoor adventure; or a peaceful, romantic escape, the Hotel offers the perfect base. County Wedding Magazines’ deputy managing editor, Kelly Andrews, paid a visit to find out more.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The Lake District is a long old drive from CWM’s Essex HQ, so the eventual sight of The Belsfield’s impressive facade, was welcome indeed. The perfect marriage of the historical and ultra-modern immediately had my attention. We were met in the car park by charming hotel porter Sean, who gave us one of the warmest welcomes I’ve ever received and kindly waited for us to check in before showing us up to our room. He wouldn’t hear of us carrying even one item of luggage, so we knew within the first moments of our stay that we were going to be in good hands here. Sean’s wasn’t the only welcome we received though, as Lake

Windermere itself already had this in hand. The moment we set foot inside the reception area, it became immediately obvious to me why its architect chose to construct it from glass, anything else would have been a travesty. My breath was literally taken away. Through the open double doors directly opposite me was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever witnessed. The vast expanse of the Lake glistening in the late summer sunshine and the rolling hills and peaks partially shrouded in mist. I didn’t want to tear my eyes away, so it was fortunate indeed that we’d been treated to one of The Belsfield’s showstopping suites complete with Lake view.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME Mum and I were like kids in a sweet shop once Sean had wished us a pleasant stay, closed the door of our suite behind him and left us, such were the levels of excitement already reached thanks to our stunning surroundings – both inside and out. By the time reception called to ask if everything was ok, we’d already decided we wanted to move in... permanently! While the best way I can think to describe it is a home away from home, that’s not entirely accurate as I can only dream that my home was this stylish and luxurious! Indeed, each of the designer rooms features elegant furnishings and delightful fabrics. From the oversized sofa and antiqued chest coffee table, to the oh-so comfortable super king size bed and huge TV, we were hooked. I’d only just managed to tear myself away from the window and that view when it was time to head down for dinner.

A TASTE OF THE LAKE DISTRICT

Dining at The Belsfield Restaurant & Brasserie offers a treat for the taste buds. A fine-dining experience sure to delight even the most committed of foodies, the varied and flavour-packed menu includes such seasonal dishes as butternut squash and pine nut pithivier; slow braised shoulder of lamb; and spring pea and goats cheese risotto.

Like everything else here, dinner is an experience. The staff excel at making their guests feel welcome and like VIPs. Shown to a table in the box bay window, surely the best seat in the house, we settled into our armchair-like seats looking out at that incredible view as we ate. As is the case throughout the hotel, the muted, neutral tones of the décor in the restaurant play a huge part in its calming vibe and don’t compete with the

idyllic surroundings, where Mother Nature does all the talking. As the sun set behind the hills and mist rolled in over the Lake we opened our menus and sipped our wine, the stresses of the motorway now a distant memory.

I opted to start my meal with the crispy pork belly with black pudding and cider cream sauce – so good I ordered it again the following night! This was followed by the main course of Cumberland sausage with whole grain mustard mash, pickled red cabbage and red wine jus. Being a cheese fanatic, I finished with a selection of local and British cheeses, which were paired with artisan biscuits, chutney, celery and grapes. But sweet treats on the menu included glazed lemon tart, date pudding and strawberry and mascarpone cheesecake. Every mouthful was a joy and the service was impeccable.

Located at the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Lounge Bar. With a warm and inviting ambience it also boasts a suite of further immaculately decorated lounges, where you can take your drink and relax overlooking Lake Windermere. That’s just what we did as we made the most of the last rays of sunshine dancing on the Lake and enjoying our extremely delicious chocolatinis (vanilla vodka, Baileys and crème de cacao –highly recommended). The smallest of the lounges we found boasted décor that reminded me of a stately home’s study. I could imagine Austen’s Mr Bennett sitting there reading a book while taking refuge from Mrs Bennett’s ‘nerves.’

Breakfast too is served in the restaurant. A welcome combination of continental self service and hot food table service, the first meal of the day is just the sort of hearty fare you’d hope to fill up on before heading out for a day exploring. Again it bears repeating how great the staff are. We were looked after by the lovely Dominika, who put a smile on our faces with her friendly manner.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE

After a restful night’s sleep we headed out of the Hotel via it’s rear terrace, which brings you straight out to Bowness’ waterfront, where we boarded a steamer for a half-lake cruise. Windermere Lake Cruises offers an extensive programme of options when it comes to cruising the lake, whether you want the scenic option, the full tour or island exploration. There are also combined tickets where you can incorporate another attraction. We opted for the cruise and steam train, which allowed us to see and experience much of the local area in the short amount of time we had. The steamer let us off at the Lakeside Pier and we took The Lakeside & Haverthwaite Heritage Railway to its terminus in Haverthwaite. Here, there’s a station tea room and gift shop, which we enjoyed before heading back to make our connection back at the pier.

We returned to Bowness and jumped in the car to Hill Top in Sawrey near Hawkshead, the 17th-century farmhouse once home to Beatrix Potter. It was the house she bought with the royalties from the first of her books, The Tale of Peter Rabbit and is well worth a visit. Not only is the house a time capsule containing many of the author’s belongings, the village itself offers a picture-perfect spot for a romantic stroll.

Keen for more of Miss Potter we wended our way back around the Lake to the opposite side and Bowness. A mere five-minute walk from

The Belsfield you’ll find The World of Beatrix Potter. Primarily a family attraction it’s nevertheless well worth a visit for bigger kids for whom the tales of Peter and friends occupy a special place in the heart. These enchanting stories are brought to life in a magical recreation of the characters and their antics as you get to meet many of the famous furry faces we all know and love from our childhoods.

Welcomed back to the hotel by charming manager Mark, who was surprised to hear about all that we’d packed into one day, I realised just how much I appreciated the location. Another string to The Belsfield’s bow is its location – right in the centre of Windermere’s eastern shore it’s at the heart of the action and with so much to see and do within easy reach. So, it’s definitely possible to get the most out of your honeymoon here whatever you decide to make of it.

With hearts heavy at the thought of leaving the hotel we’d fallen head over heels in love with, we bundled our luggage into the car the following morning and made for home, having resolved to be back at the first possible opportunity.

STEEPED IN HISTORY

Built in the 19th century for the Baroness Von Sternberg, the building’s most well-known former owner was Henry Schneider, director of the steel works at Barrow, the Barrow Flax and Jute Works and the Barrow Shipbuilding Company, who established his country residence at the Belsfield in 1869. His departure from the house early each morning was preceded by his butlers and staff descending the lawns to the lakeside carrying the entree dishes for his English Breakfast.

The house became a hotel in 1892 and between 1910 and 1911 drastic alterations were made, when an entire storey was added between the existing first and second floors. During the Second World War the Hotel was requisitioned as a training centre for WRAF officers.

Pure luxury

After hearing about The Belfry Hotel & Resort, an award-winning hotel in the heart of Sutton Coldfield with three world-class golf courses, 300+ bedrooms, multiple restaurants and a luxurious spa, I was excited to experience it first-hand.

The host of The Ryder Cup four times, more than any other venue in the world, The Belfry Hotel & Resort has gone down in history as the backdrop to some extremely notable golf moments and has hosted its fair share of famous names and faces. Less than 10 miles from Birmingham Airport, International Train Station, Alexander Stadium and Birmingham’s NEC, it’s surrounded by prominent local landmarks, and is in a prime position for any travelling guests who need a place to lay their heads.

A ROYAL WELCOME

Walking through the double doors, I was met with a stunning entrance adorned with rich fabrics and beautiful floral displays. Walking past the generous amount of guest seating, the white portico pillars and vibrant yellow neon sign for the Brabazon Bar, I couldn’t take my eyes off the quirky chandelier that was taking centre stage.

The very helpful Ryan, who was working at the check-in desk, detailed exactly where we needed to go to find our room. As we walked through

the wood-claded corridors lined with busy event and conference suites, we found the lift up to the second floor in search of the Presidential Suite. The largest and most impressive of all their overnight accommodation, the suite offers a family-sized living room complete with comfortable sofas, a dining table, a mini-kitchen space with all the comforts of home, and two separate balconies with views of the world-class golf courses.

The bedroom had luxurious plush armchairs, a desk, a luscious kingsized bed, and quite possibly the biggest en-suite bathroom I’ve ever seen! Equipped with his and hers wash basins, a free-standing bath, a spacious shower cubicle, and two separate toilets, it’s safe to say you won’t be waiting for your turn to use the bathroom.

REST AND RELAXATION

Picking up our swim bags, we headed to the spa to try out the Fire & Ice Experience. Here, Michelle gave us a guided tour through the varied selection of 12 bio thermal rooms, all designed to enhance your mood and invigorate the senses. Knowing that this spa had been named a finalist in the Best Day Spa category for the Good Spa Guide Awards 2022, I was excited for the experience to begin. Starting with a foot spa and moving through the hot and cold steam, sauna, and shower rooms,

96
Beth Morton and her hubby visited The Belfry Hotel & Resort in Sutton Coldfield

we experienced both the shock and delight that came with such extreme temperatures – it was divine! Our personal favourites were the Igloo Room, which offers chilled walls and an ever-filling ice bucket for a body massage, and the Aroma and Crystal Steam Rooms, both heavenlyscented spaces designed to cleanse and purify.

From here, we popped down to the iconic Brabazon Bar, which was crowned winner of the Hotel Bar of the Year category at the Midlands Food, Drink & Hospitality Awards 2022, for a cheeky cocktail (or three) and found ourselves transported back in time. The bar, rich in bottle green leathers with portico pillars, showcases a breathtaking raised glass ceiling that is a sight to behold.

READY, SET, PLAY!

After hearing numerous tales of woe from my husband about how he’s always the worst player on his group golfing trips, we both jumped at the chance of hitting a few golf balls at the driving range.

Despite the brilliant Toptracer technology allowing us to see our flight paths and providing data to work on our swing technique, it’s safe to say that we won’t be challenging Tiger Woods to a match any time soon!

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

The Belfry Hotel & Resort offers an impressive selection of restaurants, each a little different from the other, and we were lucky enough to dine in the fabulous Ryder Grill. The buffet here is one of the most deliciouslooking and gourmet-sounding selections I’d ever seen, but since my hubby is lactose-intolerant and vegetarian, we decided to choose from the à la carte menu.

Having made our selections, we were treated to a stunning salmon, beetroot, and wasabi starter adorned with edible flowers and a vibrant carpaccio of tomatoes. The main course, generous in size, was a seared sea trout with garlic potatoes and a very artistic fennel bhaji. The highlight of the meal was the extra dessert that our wonderful waitress Annie brought out when she realised we were struggling to decide. We scoffed a chocolate torte, a cheese selection and a sticky toffee banana bread – yum!

Our night ended on a high after we made our way back to our Presidential Suite and fell into blissful slumbers in a bed that felt lighter than air.

We had a wonderful time at The Belfry Hotel & Resort and are looking forward to coming back soon!
