It has a delightful, quiet location in the heart of Painswick, behind the town's pretty St Mary's Church. Take a stroll around the delightful churchyard dotted with 99 beautifully-sculpted yew trees, then wander the quaint streets of town. The 18th century Rococo Garden is a delight; dotted with magical follies, it's a wonderful place for a stroll throughout the year. In February, snowdrops carpet the ground - a stunning sight.

By car: The hotel is 2 hours 45 minutes from London and around 1 hour from Bristol. There is free on-site parking.

By train: London Paddington to Stroud takes just over an hour and a half. The station is a 10-minute taxi ride from the hotel. Book trains to Stroud.

The building itself oozes plenty of history - it's rumoured King Charles I stayed here during the Siege of Gloucester, and to this day you can see a bullet hole in the door - the result of his attempted assassination. There's not such a smooth flow between the exterior of this stunning 16th-century manor house and the interiors: the outside is all gorgeous Cotswold stone and delightful gardens, while inside are tawdry sofas, silver-gilt ornate mirrors and leather upholstery that aren't in keeping with the historical mansion.

The small team of staff have been working here for years; they're welcoming and friendly, providing laidback, relaxed service. Facilities vary enormously whether staying on a B&B basis (lounge and gardens only) or exclusive hire, which includes access to a private dining room, two lounges, a games room, swimming pool and gym.

Rooms come in a variety of styles and feature a heavy dose of eclectic décor. Some have a masculine look and feel, such as King Arthur, which features leather headboards and black linen, while others have more muted tones - the three stable rooms are among the most attractive, with stone floors, peacock blue armchairs and wooden furnishings.

The buffet breakfast is a simple but complete affair, with croissants, fruits, yoghurt and muesli, and hot dishes stored in Gastronorm pans (eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, sausages, bacon, grilled tomatoes). In the evenings, you'll find a concise menu with the likes of pan-roasted sea bass and fillet steak with peppercorn cream.
