'Glass Onion': Everything 'Knives Out' Sequel Confirmed About Benoit Blanc's Origin, Accent And More

Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc took the internet by storm once again, when he returned with Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in 2022. Benoit Blanc first appeared in Knives Out as a mysterious detective, who showed up to investigate a murder and left as silently as he came. From his accent, and his name to his origin story, everything remained a mystery even after years of its release.

Even the actor himself knows as little about his character as the audience. While Daniel himself, may not be interested in finding out more about Benoit Blanc, fans are dying for any hints in the sequel. And the makers didn't disappoint, fans were rejoicing Blanc's sexuality and his more expressive rants in the Glass Onion.

The sequel saw a different Blanc. While in Knives Out he stayed in the background, charming his way through the suspects, and reviling only little bit of himself in Glass Onion he was more raw, open to expressing him. You could easily explain it as frustration, of being locked away in the home during COVID, but as much as it got the introverts out for a walk, it also got Blanc to hunt a case and get out of the house.

Blanc's first scene of the film shows him in a bathtub talking to his friends on the laptop and playing Among Us (or attempting to play Among Us like most of us.) The scene itself makes one of the biggest revelations about Blanc — He is living with his partner, Philip (played by Hugh Grant) in London and has four close friends who are worried about him.

Angie, Natasha, Steve S, and Kareem can be seen urging him to leave the house and step out. The scene also gives a hint at his personality, while we knew he loved drinking and smoking cigars, in the scene, we find out he loves to do puzzles and loves to read fiction. And among the heap is one open comic book, possibly thrown away from his tub. Something that he picked in desperation but didn't quite enjoy.

The scene made fans very happy as it confirmed Benoit Blanc's sexuality. The film majority hints at him being gay with a male live-in partner, his choice of drinks and clothes, and his choices in helping women without a romantic intention. But director Rian Johnson that Blanc is gay, after a screening at the London Film Festival, Insider revealed that Johnson was asked if Benoit Blanc is gay and he responded: “Yes, he obviously is.”

The film also sees Daniel Craig taking liberty with Blanc's accent a little more than in Knives Out. With a hint of British boldness, he is more fluent with the southern drawl. The makers currently have little to no plans of exploring Blanc's past. If not his past we do know a little more about his present, and who he is. The film does confirm Blanc has a soft side. As much as he believes in the law and abides by it, he also believes in justice, legal or social. His sarcastic comments and snappy judgments about Miles Bron also show he can and here on out take things personally, even if he isn't always at the center of the case.

Talking about his character, Craig in an interview with Happy Sad Confused had explained Blanc's mystery is his biggest charm. He said, "Poirot (Belgian detective written by Agatha Christie) sort of materialized from nowhere, solved the case, and then disappeared. That puzzle is significant. The focus of attention is not on him. He [Blanc] ought to be a mystery. I’m not interested in knowing what he was doing when he was twelve.”

And fans are more than happy to investigate themselves. Glass Onion helped fans understand a bit more of Blanc's life and the hope is that the mystery will slowly unravel in upcoming movies.

With Knives Out 3 in development, the next sequel would be the right place to explore more about his own life, his friends that we just met, and his partner Philip. By introducing these characters, the makers have indirectly hinted at the death of one of them, possibly bringing an emotionally taxing investigation in Blanc's future.

Fans also have better plans for the sequel as well! If not an origin story, they want to see Blanc secretly working with Philip on a case. Meanwhile, others simply want to see him solve a muppet murder mystery.
