Born in Maputo, Mozambique, on August 31, 1936, Otelo Nuno Romão Saraiva de Carvalho was mobilized to Angola in 1961, as an artillery captain, and remained on duty there until 1963. Later, he became a strategist in the operational sector of the coordinating committee of the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) and clandestinely directed the operations from the Pontinha barracks, which resulted in the end of the Estado Novo.
As the internal divisions of the MFA deepened, Othello became one of the most radical soldiers in the movement and, following the events of 25 November 1975, he was arrested and removed from all positions and was released for three months. later. He ran for the 1976 presidential elections, where he won more than 16% of the vote (lost to Ramalho Eanes). In 1980, he created the Popular Unity Force and ran for president again, this time without significant results.
On November 25, 1983, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Liberty. An award shrouded in controversy, as he was accused of having led the terrorist organization FP-25, responsible for the murder of 17 people. He served five years in prison, between 1984 and 1989, and was released after filing an appeal against the conviction. He awaited trial on provisional release until 1996, when the Assembly of the Republic approved a pardon and amnesty for FP-25 detainees.
