Excellent workshop! Dr. Karen Kelsky is very knowledgeable and goes straight to the point. Everyone in the audience had a chance to speak up and share their stories (if they chose to do so). Karen also created a very safe and compassionate environment where we felt heard and seen. In addition, we got a lot of practical advice on what to do moving forward.
I'd love to participate in a follow-up session with similar format or we could create a meet-up/ support group so we can continue to meet, share experiences and learn more from each other.

Excellent session! Karen has so much experience and wisdom to share, and she does it with humor and compassion. This session was a great balance of information delivery interwoven with discussion questions. I loved connecting with colleagues experiencing similar challenges and hearing their stories.

In the future, it could be beneficial to have sessions targeted toward specific groups (e.g., early vs. mid-career) or disciplines (e.g., STEM vs. social sciences). I don’t think having everyone mixed was a problem for this session, but I can see some separation might be useful for more advanced topics.

Dr Kelsky is a very experienced speaker inviting and facilitating participants to share their own stories, which is one of the most beautiful parts in this workshop. Thank you for the amazing workshop, which had greatly helped me look at my own situation in academic using a wider angle. Dr. Karen Kelsky has a wealth of knowledge about life inside of academia and how to strategically pivot out of it. She offered lots of helpful tips on how to begin to envision and make a life outside of academia while acknowledging the emotional trauma and burnout many of us shoulder in this process. The chat and Q&A during the workshop made it feel like a really supportive community and I would love to continue to connect with everyone here via Zoom (maybe doing peer support with feedback in small breakout rooms?), LinkedIn, or other opportunities.

Bio

Hi, I am Dr. Karen Kelsky and I am the Founder and CEO of The Professor Is In, and more recently, The Professor Is Out. Since 2011 The Professor Is In has provided a full-service individual and institutional consultancy on the academic job search and all elements of the academic career. I am building The Professor Is Out initiative to focus more resources on assisting academics in the often painful and challenging process of transitioning out of academia.

I speak nationally and internationally on topics related to Ph.D. professionalization and career development, and I have been a columnist at Chronicle of Higher Education. As the creator of the Sexual Harassment in the Academy Survey and the #MeTooPhD hashtag, I also speak nationally on issues of sexual assault in the academy, with a focus on empowering victims and training people in leadership. Another area of activism is on graduate school student debt. I am a former tenured professor and department head at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and University of Oregon. My book The Professor Is In: The Essential Guide to Turning Your Ph.D. Into a Job (Random House 2015), is going into a second edition. Check out the Professor Is In podcast.
