Chihiro

Sega (2001-2004)

The Chihiro uses a earlier version of the Xbox motherboard based on the Xbox development kit motherboards, utilizing a earlier version of the Nvidia chipset (MCPX X2) and a "Arcade" Kernel. As with other debug motherboards, it features 128MB of RAM, twice the amount found in a retail Xbox.

Typicaly a Chihiro came in two versions, earlier in the release of the chihiro it was using a Xbox motherboard with the old style powerconnector and connected to the baseboard was a Type 1 DIMM board similiar to a Naomi.A newer version, probebly using the newer ATX powersupply connector is a Type 3 Chihiro with a media board integrated (with ram varieing for 512mb to 1gig for gameloading. There are no known Type2 models.

The Xbox gameboards are found in 4(3?) versions. In Type 1 Chihiros you might find a motherboard with 3 CPU caps or 4, and a old singleline powersupply connector or a ATX modern powersupply connector.

On both the type 1 and 3 the GDRom can be connected to the Mediaboard over special SCSI like cables. there are adapters availeble to load games from CFcards instead for faster loading. for all games PIC key like adapters are required but hacked keys are sold to allow any game. Sega Chihiro baseboard (USB(for gamecontrollers), LPC, IDE and powerboard connections to the xbox) Ontop is a JVS(not USB, just formfactor)connector, VGA and AVIP connector (video from xbox)

🔗 Xbox gameboard

Because the gameboard, the lowest part is a Regular Xbox motherboard with double the ram and "earlier" MCPX chipset, its very similiar to xbox related fixes and bugs.

Advice 1 is to Remove or replace the clock cap on the motherboard.The xbox should be able to proces a video signal from its video connector directly to a TV (it will Display "Chihiro" and something about "Incorrect Video setting"

🔗 Check LEDs on filter board

On the filter board there is a green and a red status LED. Only the green should be on for normal operation. If they both blink something’s wrong with the unit.

If you get a solid green and a flashing red, then check the AVIP cable (the jumper between the xbox board and the interface board). Alternating red and green (I.E. a FRAG in Xbox terms) indicates a boot failure and is most likely caused by a problem on the Xbox board.

If you get a steady green LED for about 20-30s then a FRAG, it indicates that the Xbox board initialized correctly, but was unable to load the segaboot code located on the media board.

🔗 Jumper settings Mediaboard

On the media board you find a set of jumpers. The ones you have to pay attention to are jumpers 5, 8, 9, and 10. Jumper 5 controls the amount of RAM used and should match the amount of memory installed. Jumpers 8 – 10 switches between GD-ROM and network boot.
