Washington took on the Bard in 2021’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, playing the titular king driven by power and ultimately haunted by guilt. Washington took on another famous playwright by playing the lead in August Wilson’s Fences, a film that the actor also jumped behind the camera to direct. It’s a heck of an adaptation, and Washington gives the performance his all.

Inside Man
Teaming up once again with auteur Spike Lee, Washington got to have some fun as a detective trying to navigate a hostage situation at a Manhattan bank. Inside Man is an electric, pulpy crime thriller that only Lee could make, and Washington just gets to operate in such a thrilling space as he tries to save the day amid quite a tense situation. It’s one of Washington’s best movies.
