Journalist, Author. He is best known for his popular humorous book, "Three Men in a Boat", which comedically chronicled a two week boat trip he took with two friends. It was immediately successful, and has sold over a million copies in the ensuing years. The financial security from the book allowed him to found the satirical monthly magazine "The Idler" in 1892. He published fourteen novels and a number of collected works. During World War I he served as a civilian volunteer ambulance driver.
