About This File

The aircraft in this package replicates Schweizer SGS 1-26B bearing serial number 239, the sailplane I flew for many years. This aircraft has given me many pleasurable hours climbing the prairie thermals "cloud hopping," often with the soaring birds literally at my wingtip. I also had the enjoyable experience of doing a complete tear-down and rebuild of this aircraft, which made being airborne even more enjoyable.

The 1-26 first flew in 1954 and continued in production till 1979, with a total of 700 being made. The Schweizer brothers introduced the one-design concept to soaring with this aircraft, and since the 1960s the 1-26 Association has provided a venue for an annual competition that remains popular with many 1-26 pilots.

Most of the 1-26s built are being maintained in airworthy condition. Many gliding clubs across North America still have them in their fleets, and with this rugged sailplane have introduced thousands of pilots to the sport of soaring over the years. With a light wing loading and low stall speed, the 1-26 can take advantage of even slight rising air currents and circle in the smallest of thermals. Capable of mild aerobatics, this nimble little glider is truly fun to fly; it has become an "American Classic."

If you are new to flying gliders there is good information about the principles of motorless flight at: www.5c1.net/Glider%20Performance%20Airspeeds.htm

I hope you enjoy the "classic" and happy soaring,
