From Hart Hanson (Bones), Backstrom is based on the Swedish book series about an overweight, offensive, and irascible detective who tries to change his self-destructive behavior. Haysbert has been cast as Det. John Almond, one of the law dogs working with Backstrom. From 2006 to 2009, Haysbert starred as Jonas Blaine in the military drama The Unit for CBS.
