Morocco to Host 2030 World Cup jointly with Portugal and Spain

Morocco is set to host the 20230 FIFA World Cup together with Portugal and Spain after their joint bid got accepted by the sports governing body.

“The FIFA Council agreed unanimously that the only bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2030 will be the joint bid” of the three nations, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced today.

“Two continents – Africa and Europe – united not only in a celebration of football but also in providing unique social and cultural cohesion,” Infantino said.

The 2030 World Cup’s first three opening matches will, however, take place in South America to mark the World Cup’s centenary in Uruguay’s capital, Montevideo, where the first-ever World Cup took place in 1930.

Accordingly, Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host one match each. The decision is subject to final approval by the FIFA Congress in 2024.

The first of the three opening matches will be played at the stadium where it all began, in Montevideo’s mythical Estádio Centenário.

“In a divided world, FIFA and football are uniting,” Infantino said. “In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents – Africa, Europe and South America – six countries – Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay – welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the FIFA World Cup.”
