Skrollcat Studio and PM Studios‘ hand-painted puzzle-platformer Hoa shows the power and beauty of nature.

It’s no secret that I love hand-painted backgrounds and characters in games, and this title again proves that visuals (and sounds) can already evoke an atmosphere that so many words couldn’t convey. Accompanying small creature Hoa on her way to “where it all began” is as cryptic as a story could be, though.

One meets a few magical creatures during the protagonist’s journey who all have their little tales to share and it becomes clear that this isn’t about saving the world from evil, something many platformers seem to have relied on for so many years. Cuteness and relaxing atmosphere aside, one should still have a penchant for platforming games, as a lot of jumping and exploration-based puzzles are involved.

The game is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch with a 15% launch discount that lasts until August 31, 2021, at 7 AM UTC.
