Got 199 DKK [Danish Krona], that’s around US$36.00, to spend? Hurry to the Retro Computer website and you may be in time to purchase the CDTV of Women in Motion (animations from Animal Locomotion). Don’t have a CDTV player? Neither have I – nor just about anyone else, since the system was around for only a year or so, from 1991. There was also a title Animals [but no Men, or Children] in Motion. No doubt the out-of-copyright situation, widespread appeal of photographs of unclothed women, and the short running time of sequences, all contributed to the decision to include Women in Motion in On-Line Entertainment’s title list.
I’ve written before about ‘extinct discs’ (Laserdisc) and an early Muybridge CD-Rom.
This CDTV disc sits half-way between, chronologically. Muybridge’s Zoopraxiscope format was quite long-lived, by comparison; 12 years at least (1879-1891), and a further two years or so as an abortive Mk II (colour discs, 1892-4) – possibly intended for ‘commercial’ launch, but abandoned when film arrived.

Electric Company Theatre’s STUDIES IN MOTION,
Inspired by the life and work of 19th century photographer Eadweard Muybridge, whose instantaneous photography and exhaustive studies in animal and human locomotion foretold the invention of the modern-day cinema.
In 1885 Muybridge embarked on a mission of cataloging animal movement and human gestures, dissecting time and in so doing, revealed a world invisible to the naked eye. However, Muybridge is haunted by the ghosts of his past actions; the man he killed, the child he abandoned, and the woman he thought he knew. The play, a physically and visually explosive spectacle, explores themes of memory, identity, and the quest for meaning at the very beginning of our culture’s obsession with images…..
