MSR To use the MSR, ensure the card is facing the correct direction, with its magnetic stripe in contact with the read head while passing through the reader. The card can be swiped in either direction. Barcode Scanner To scan a barcode, press one of the Easy Access Trigger buttons on the underside of the jacket. Position the barcode over the scanner window, ensuring that the laser scan line crosses every bar and space of the symbol Connecting Peripherals Connect POS peripherals to the HP Retail Expansion Dock by connecting the appropriate cable to the corresponding port on the dock. Caution! The system must be powered off before installing or removing peripherals on serial ports. USB Hubs The USB specification allows for a maximum of five USB hubs to be interconnected. Each of the docking station s USB port groups (USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and Powered USB) is attached to an internal hub, which has one or more internal upstream hubs. Based on the number of internal hubs provided for the HP Retail Jacket and HP Retail Expansion Dock, a total of six external hubs can be connected to the dock: Number of Internal hubs upstream from these ports: Internal upstream hubs for Retail Jacket Internal upstream hubs for dock: Total internal upstream hubs: Total external hubs allowed: USB USB V and 24V powered The diagram depicts the maximum number of external hubs allowed for each group of USB ports. 11 Troubleshooting and support If a customer has trouble with a device connected to the HP Retail Expansion Dock for ElitePad, you should begin troubleshooting the issue by isolating the cause to either the peripheral or the docking station. MSR or Barcode scanner on the HP Retail Jacket for ElitePad does not work Remove the HP Retail Jacket for ElitePad and see if the problem still exists. If it does, the problem is with the HP Retail Jacket for ElitePad. Follow the troubleshooting and diagnostics steps in the HP Retail Jacket for ElitePad Training White Paper to isolate the issue. Peripheral attached to dock does not work Remove the peripheral, and attach to a known working system. If the problem still exists, the issue is with the peripheral. Peripherals work except when attached to the dock If you have tested the peripherals and they function until they are attached to the docking station, then the problem is most likely with the HP Retail Expansion Dock. Check all of the cable connections to ensure they are secure. If possible try the connection using a different cable. Power cycle the dock. If the customer is having a problem with a serial port connection, advise the customer to power down the system before connecting any devices to a serial port. Too many USB hubs error message is displayed If the customer exceeds the maximum number of USB hubs supported by the USB port, an error message similar to the following is displayed. Refer to the previous section for the maximum number of hubs supported by each USB port. January 2014 Page 11
