    Biography
    Josef Herkert (the grandfather of the donor) was born on March 30, 1906 in Ruedenau, Germany. He served as a seargent in Police Battaion 323 first doing combat in the Smolensk area and then working as an instructor in Tilsit in western Russia. From late May to October 1942 he trained local auxilieraries in Kaunas, Lithuania. Afterwards Herkert returned to Germany and spent the remainder of the war in Wuerzburg.
