Saint Jean-François-Régis Clet Biography

Saint Jean-François-Régis Clet was the tenth born in a family of fifteen children born of a farmer and a merchant father. He was named after Saint John Francis Regis and raised in a religious family where one of his brothers became a priest and a sister a nun.

Jean studied at the Jesuit Royal College at Grenoble, France and later joined the Congregation of the Mission in France on March 6, 1769, finalizing his vows in 1771.

Jean was then ordained in 1773 and became a professor of moral theology at the Vincentian Seminary in Annecy, France. In1786, he became the rector of Annecy and also had the role of a director of the novice in Paris.

His community was dismantled and their house destroyed by the French Revolution. He then became a missionary to China in 1791 and was assigned to Kiang-si in 1792 working as the only European in the area.

However, he never mastered the area despite having worked for 28 years in the area and then moved to Hou-Kouang in the Hopei Province where he served as a superior of Vincentian missionaries.

On June 16, 1819, he was betrayed by a Christain schoolmaster where they were forced to walk hundreds of miles while in chains. He was later found guilty of preaching to the Chinese people on 1 January 1820 and then MArtyred.
