This Toyota SW20 MR2 got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo was modified for use in the I/GT class of SCTA-sanctioned land speed competitions in 1999 by Bob Norwood, who acquired the car around two decades ago from the previous owner who had commissioned the build. Power comes from a turbocharged JDM-spec 4A-GE inline-four that has been de-stroked to 1.0-liter and paired with a five-speed manual transmission with a single-disc carbon clutch. The car is finished in white over black fabric upholstery, and additional equipment includes a full roll cage with door bars, a trunk-mounted air-to-water intercooler, a fuel cell, rear parachute, Kirkey fixed-back bucket seat, fire suppression system, dry-sump lubrication, MoTec M600 engine management system, individual throttle bodies, and polished Weld Racing wheels. This modified MR2 is being offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of the owner in Rockwall, Texas as a non-running project with a Carfax report, spare parts, service records, and a bill of sale.

No Reserve: 1991 Toyota MR2 Turbo Land Speed Car Project

The car was previously finished in black and was repainted white some time ago. The rear spoiler and side-view mirrors have been removed, and exterior features include front fog lamps, a rear parachute, roof flap, and an exhaust that exits through the bodywork ahead of the passenger-side rear wheel. Corrosion is noted on the floor pans and around the driver-side rear wheel arch. Various paint chips, scratches, and areas of paint bubbling are visible in the gallery below.

Polished Weld Racing wheels are mounted with white-letter Goodyear Front Runner tires that will need to be replaced per the seller. Lowering springs have been added up front, while the rear subframe was modified to raise the engine and transmission by approximately 3.5 inches.

The cabin features a Kirkey fixed-back bucket seat and factory passenger seat trimmed in black fabric. The JDM-spec 20-valve Toyota 4A-GE inline-four has been fitted with a Xona Rotor turbocharger and was de-stroked to 1.0-liter. A mechanical refresh is said to have been performed in 2016 that included installation of a custom billet crankshaft, and the removed previous crankshaft is included in the sale. The car is not currently fitted with a battery, and a leak from the oil pan is noted. The seller reports that the car has not been run in approximately five years, and further mechanical servicing is required. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission with a single-disc carbon clutch. Additional modifications are said to include the following:

  • Ported five-valve cylinder head
  • Trunk-mounted air-to-water intercooler
  • Individual throttle bodies
  • Bill Miller pistons
  • MoTec M600 engine management system
  • Fuel cell with stainless-steel lines
  • Dry-sump lubrication
  • M&W ignition system

Areas of corrosion are visible on the underside, and additional photos are provided in the gallery below.

The Carfax report displays five entries between 1991 and 1998 and shows that the car was issued a salvage title for flood damage in 1998.
