Microsoft won’t allow you to keep your game clips and screenshots on the Xbox Network forever. In a blog post, the company announced that they will begin removing all of these game captures 90 days after you upload them. If you cherish your “play of the game” moments like I do, you should quickly start saving them somewhere else.

How to save your Xbox pictures and game videos using your console

You can save your Xbox game recordings to an external device or upload them to OneDrive. To do this on your Xbox, press the Xbox button on your controller and go to My Games & apps > See all > Apps > Captures. On this screen, you can click the Manage button and choose all your recordings. Then, you can pick Upload to OneDrive to store them in the cloud. For most people, this is a good option as long as you have enough free space on OneDrive. If you have a free account, you get 5GB of storage.

Alternatively, connect an external hard drive or a USB flash drive to your Xbox. Next, select all the recordings and pick the Copy to external drive option to make a backup on the external or USB drive.

You can also decide to delete these recordings if you no longer need them. To do this, just select as many recordings as you want to remove and click Delete.

Put new game pictures on an outside disk

For those who don’t want to continuously manually save their game recordings, the best option is to record them directly onto an external storage device. Microsoft suggests using a USB 3.0 or faster drive for this purpose because you need something that can handle recording in real time.

When you connect the external drive, press the Xbox button on the controller and go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage. Now, select your external drive from this page and set it as the storage location for capturing. Keep the drive connected as long as the console is on; the next time you capture a screenshot or game clip, your Xbox will automatically save it directly to the external drive.

Save your Xbox game recordings from your computer

If your main gaming tool is your computer, you can press Windows + G to start the Windows Game Bar. Go to the Widgets menu and click on Gallery. Choose any of your screenshots or game clips from this page and click on “Open file location.”

This will guide you to where all your game captures are stored. You can easily duplicate these files to your backup drive or upload them to your preferred cloud storage service.
