Il commença par peindre des scènes de reconstitution historique, et termina par de la peinture religieuse : mais son nom reste attaché à une peinture mondaine, à des scènes londoniennes ou parisiennes où les femmes et leurs toilettes, savamment choisies et dépeintes, tiennent la plus grande place.
Il quitta la France en 1871 pour l’Angleterre où il fut apprécié comme un des plus fameux portraitiste de la haute société de l’époque victorienne.
