And that’s the OVAs out of the way.
While I mostly enjoyed the Guu TV series, these two OVAs were a noticeable step down. It’s hard to describe exactly what’s wrong with them. It’s not like the first Guu was non-stop hilarity, but it had enough clever and/or funny moments to be entertaining. The OVAs just have fewer of those, which just leaves you with “lol random” humor, characters being drawn in weird styles, and Hare overreacting and explaining the joke. A lot of Hare overreacting and explaining the joke.
In my review of the TV series I mentioned that Guu herself carried the show almost on her own. But even she can’t save the OVAs. it’s like she’s just going through the motions now, doing her usual semi-sarcastic deadpan background commentary but without the wit or strong comedic timing.
Deluxe was at least okay, but Final was a slog. The JRPG parody was the only decent episode, which says a lot. Some of its episodes treat it like a serious story and there’s no real joke, and that’s supposed to be the joke. But even the ones that try to be more like regular Guu episodes are just… not funny.
Also, I can’t believe it treats the bad father-son relationship between Clive and Hare as both sides’ fault, when one is a child and the other is an adult who’s also a huge piece of shit.
