The seat of this stool has a gently curved ovoid shape, similar to platforms found on many headrests and stools from sub-Saharan Africa. Its base--two square blocks flanking a central support--echoes the base of a Bari headrest from Sudan. The chip-carved pattern along the edge of the seat reflects a technique used by many African sculptors. While Legrain's stool does not correspond to a type attributable to a specific people, its elements evoke furnishings found throughout Africa.
