Chung Riwoche Kumbum was founded by Tangton Gyalpo in the mid-15th century. It survived destruction by the Mongols in the 18th century and the Red Guards in the 1960s. Only the top was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. In 1988 the top was restored. The chörten has eight storeys.
