My Yoper Install Story

After using mandrake and Redhat Linux I was surfing the net and come across a Linux distro Called YOPER. It was supposed to be “the fastest Linux distro out of the box” and made in New Zealand. I liked what I saw, so I thought I would try it out.

This is my install………

To test out YOPER I loaded up good old vmware before I committed to a permanent install. Here you can see Yoper being install under winxp pro. I set up vmware with a 7-gig drive and 128 Meg of ram. This was a good way to get screen shots of the install and make some notes as I went.

Here are some screen shots of the booting procedure. “Gota luv tux”

After the boot procedure has finished this is the next screen to be displayed. It is pretty obvious what to do next just type yoper to start the setup. I typed yoper pressed enter, and of she went.

This is Yoper’s disclaimer screen I read it and just hit enter

This is the next screen it checks the integrity of the install files I selected

Yes as I downloaded this iso file with a dialup modem………..

This is the next screen after selecting the yes option.

Here is when the fun starts. As I was installing Yoper in a virtual machine this is the only drive. I just hit the space bar then OK

This is the next screen please NOTE you must create 3 partitions not 2. Just remember to make a home partition. The root partition must be over 3 gigs. For the swap partition I usually just make the swap partition the same size as the memory in my computer and haven’t had any problems.

Here is the next screen since all went well so far I just hit yes.

Now qtparted has loaded. The first thing to do is select (just click on) the dive you want to install Yoper to. There was only one there for me.

Now we can start to make the partitions we need.

The next step is to right click on the drive and select “make a new partition table” The following warning message appeared. I click yes.

The drive information has changed from Empty to the size of my drive 7 gig.

The first partition I made was my swap partition. I right clicked on the drive

and selected create from the menu (I couldn’t get a screen shot) for the partition type select linux-swap from the drop down box and I set the size to 128.0 meg

Now the swap partition has been made.

The next partition I made was my home partition I used ext3 the file system

Which was the default and made it 3 gig and click OK

Next I made a partition for my root I used ext3 and used all the space that was Left and click OK

The next stage is after you created all the partitions I clicked on file then commit From the menu (I couldn’t get a screen shot). Then click Yes.

Next it started to make the partitions

Now it has made all the partitions and I click OK. Then I closed down qtparted. Just like windows click File then Quit who said Linux was hard….

This screen is asking for the swap partition I just pressed the space bar then

Clicked OK.

This next screen is asking to select my HOME partition I must not forget that Yoper needs 3 gig or more for its root partition so I selected the first option As it was 2996 meg in size and was the one I made for my HOME partition. So I press the spacebar to selected then selected OK. And hit enter.

As I was doing a new install I just selected Yes.

Now I select my root partition. I press the spacebar to selected then selected

OK. And hit enter. Note it’s over 3 gig.

the next screen is asking for the type of filesystem you want to use. I selected ext3 to give it a go. I hit the spacebar then selected OK

Next it started to format the partitions and do what it has to do.

At last I was finally installing Yoper to my hard drive, so far all has gone well.

Next I got a screen that told me it was going to set up the boot loader as this

Is in a virtual machine with only yoper installed I just selected yes. I will add a dual boot (windows and Yoper) section as soon as I install one.

This is the next thing that happened looking good.

Next I selected my Language it defaulted to English so I just selected

OK. And hit enter.

Next screen, as it wasn’t a laptop I was installing to I selected NO And hit enter

Next on the menu we started to setup networking since I don’t use DHCP I

Just selected NO And hit enter

Next I had to enter a hostname I wasn’t sure from memory if this was right

but I was too lazy to check as I could change it later if it didn’t work I just

entered my.yoper.host.org. then I selected OK

Next I had to enter my gateway my ADSL network is not setup yet so I just

Entered 192.168.0.1. then I selected OK

Next I had to enter the network address for the Yoper system. I used

192.168.0.22 then I selected OK

Next I entered my netmask for my network 225.255.255.0

Next I entered the broadcast address 192.168.0.255.

Next I entered the DNS server address I just entered 192.168.0.1. As I stated

Before I only have a local lan not connected to the internet yet.

Now I have to chose the boot loader since I am going to use Lilo

I just selected yes

Since Yoper is the only OS I just selected yes. Plus I have been warned enough today as it is lol.

Next screen. Now it looks like I am going to up sound in Yoper I don’t think

ALSA would be running yet so I just selected OK.

After it searched and did its thing it found the following soundcard. Since all

Has gone well so far I just selected OK.

Next its asking to modify /ect/modprobe.conf I selected yes.

Next screen I selected OK. Still going smooth.

No it says my sound has been set up tunes here we come

Now I am setting up my location I just answer the prompts easy as 1,2,3

Now I enter a user name since my name is Kevin I enter Joe (long story lol)

And select OK.

Next I pick a password.

Next its time to enter the password for the root account.

Getting very close now all is going very well. Just selected OK.

OK next I type exit then pressed enter let it do its thing.

then I typed reboot then pressed enter

Letting it do its thing………………

Looking good still doing its thing……..

Very pleased so far. Now I am going to set up my graphics card I clicked

Change configuration to see what resolution I could get.

I click on Monitor then Change configuration (not active yet as I haven’t click Monitor yet)

I changed the resolution to 800x600. then clicked OK.

Now I clicked Test to see if all was well.

Yep looks good. now I just clicked on Save

All Saved. I just clicked OK.

Now I exit by clicking Yes

Doing its thing in stereo?????

There at last. Yoper is up and waiting for me very happy now.

Very nice setup love KDE to

DOH !!!!!! No it’s just letting me know KNemo is being run for the first time, will have to RTM to find out more. Just click OK.

Now I configure the network monitor looks ok to me just clicked OK

Done Yoper is up and running looks very smooth and professional one thing

I want to try first is that My Network icon. Here goes….

NO WAY !!!!!! This has been the first distro I have used that I could do that

Straight from a clean install without setting up it my self. My 3 computers,

The Yoper virtual system and my xbox all there. Time for a well earned drink And a big cheers to the Yoper Team Well done.

This is what I came back to after having my break. I am in the matrix now thanks Yoper.

Well this has been my install story I hope it helps explain the install process

A bit. Its not really a guide on how to install Yoper, but might help some. Its

Just my install of Yoper and I found it very easy to install and is as fast as

they say anyway time to play…………….
