Vasco Pratolini is thought to be one of the most important Italian writers of the second half of the 20th century. Some of his writings and novels are the best representation of the realist and, in part, neo-realist currents.
Pratolini was born in Florence in 1913, close to Piazza della Signoria, where he grew up. Most of his stories are set there: stories of ordinary life, of a Florence of the people. In his works, we can read about the Arno River, squares, alleys, churches, and monuments and we can find the soul of real Florentines. He depicted the city he himself experienced, in black and white, apparently different from how the city is today. In his novels, he described and painted some of the historic districts of Florence: Metello: A Novel is set in Saint Nicholas district at the end of 1800; The Girls of San Frediano is set on the other side of the Arno River in San Frediano district, one of the most authentic district of the city; A Tale of Poor Lovers depicts Florence during the Fascist period and is set very close to Ponte Vecchio. Finally, Naked Streets deals with the story of young people of Santa Croce.
