William Ellis was a missionary, working in the South Sea and Hawaiian Islands. He was also pastor of the Congregationalist Church in Hoddesdon between 1847 and 1852 and this bust used to stand in the church. Ellis wrote influential books on the islands he visited, describing the culture, wildlife and plants. Keyworth, a marble sculptor from Hull, made this bust after Ellis married his second wife, Sarah Stickney. Sarah established a girls' school at Rawdon House in 1845.
